Self-diagnosis of airbag system
Description of system
Airbag system comprises:
♦Airbag control units
♦Side crash sensor
♦Driver airbag
♦Passenger airbag
♦Driver and passenger side airbag
♦Mechanically ignited seat belt tensioner for
driver and passenger seat belts
♦Switch for front passenger airbags (special
equipment vehicles MY03 ➤)
The described airbag system consists of the
actuators, driver airbag, passenger airbag, driver
and passenger side airbags and two front seat
belt tensioners.
These are directly ignited by the airbag control
unit (J234) in the event of a crash as soon as
the given activation criteria are exceeded.
The belt tensioners are ignited independently
of the signal from the airbag control unit.
It is possible to re-activate or deactivate the front
passenger airbag using the self-diagnosis
⇒page 01-15.10.
If the front passenger airbag unit is deactivated,
a fault relating to erasing airbag unit is stored in
the fault memory and after the airbag unit is sub-
sequently re-activated, it is erased from the fault
memory (only for vehicles which do not have a
switch for the front passenger airbag).
The switching on and off operations are underta-
ken by means of the switch for the front passen-
ger airbag if the vehicle is fitted with such a switch.
When igniting the driver and front passenger
front airbag, the fault „crash data stored“ is ente-
red into the fault memory and the airbag control
unit must be replaced with a new original part.
If the control unit detects a side collision, it ig-
nites the side airbag on the crash side. The fault
„crash data of driver side airbag stored“ or „crash
data of front passenger side airbag stored“ is
entered in the fault memory. These data can be
erased 3x at the most, after which the control
unit must be replaced with a new original part
(valid for vehicles 08.00 ➤).
For vehicles ➤07.00 these data cannot be era-
sed, the control must be replaced with a new
original part.

Once an airbag unit is ignited then the control
unit sends a signal to the control unit for the
convenience system or for the central locking
system and to the engine control unit. This func-
tion serves to maintain passive safety on the
vehicle.
On ignition of an airbag unit:
♦all doors are unlocked
♦the interior lighting is switched on
♦the fuel delivery unit is switched off 1)

The signal from the control unit should be
checked with the aid of an actuator diagnosis
⇒ age 01-9.
The control unit for the airbag (J234) is located
in the front area of the middle console ⇒ age
69-16. The control unit is fitted with a fault
memory.
The control unit detects an error in the airbag
unit and stores this in the permanent memory.
There are also faults stored which are due to
temporary interruptions in the line or a loose
connection. This type of fault is shown as a spo-
radic fault S .
On switching on the ignition the warning light
for the airbag (K75) lights up for 4 seconds. If
the warning light then blinks for a further 12 sec-
onds this signalises that one of the front pas-
senger airbag units has been locked electroni-
cally (only for vehicles which do not have a
switch for front passenger airbags).
♦If the warning light (K75) does not goes out
after 4 seconds then there is a fault present.
Interrogate the fault memory ⇒ age 01-8.
♦If the warning light (K75) goes out and then
goes on again then the control unit is not
coded, the wrong control unit has been in-
stalled or there is a fault. Interrogate the fault
memory ⇒ age 01-8.
♦If the warning light (K75) is continuously blink-
ing then the control unit (J234) must be re-
placed.
A self-diagnosis should be initiated at the be-
ginning of the search for a fault and the stored
information is to be called up using the Vehicle
System Tester V.A.G 1552, V.A.G 1551 or V.A.S
5051.

♦The sequence below relates only to the ve-
hicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with pro-
gramme card .0.
♦Use of vehicle system tester V.A.S 1551 or
V.A.G 1551 with programme card 9.0, is simi-
lar with the exception of specific variations
(e.g. different readouts in display, use of
printer).
♦The function 0 End output must be se-
lected in order to end the diagnosis or to
switch to another address word.
All the fault information displayed is used to re-
fer to a fault table in order to determine the pos-
sible causes and conduct specific repair meas-
ures.
When carrying out tests and removal and in-
stallation operations, faults may be stored in
other control units (e.g. because of separating
plug connections). For this reason, always in-
terrogate the fault memories of all the control
units and then erase them.
Procedure:
- Enter address word Automatic test se-
quence. Vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552,
or V.A.G 1551, checks the fault memories of
all the systems in the vehicle with a self-di-
agnosis capability.
- If the corresponding ECU responds with its
identification, the number and type of stored
faults appears in the display, or No fault rec-
ognized.
- Rectify any faults which exist and erase the
fault memory.
KAfter completion of the test sequence, the fol-
lowing readout appears in the display:

Guidelines for undertaking an
airbag system self-diagnosis
Required special tools testing and measur-
ing equipment as well auxiliary devices and
material:
♦The Vehicle System Tester V.A.G 1552
♦The diagnostic cable V.A.G 1551/3, 3A, 3B
or 3C
♦A m ltimeter e.g. V.A.G 1526 A
♦Test box VAS 5056 with adapter cable VAS
5056/1 and VAS 5056/2
Take note!
Only check the cable guides and plug connectors
to ensure that they are seated properly when the
ignition is switched off (also possible disconnec-
tion of the plug connections).
Employees must be electrostatically discharged
before disconnecting the plug connections for the
airbag.
Do not undertake continuity checks or other meas-
urements in the ignition circuit when the airbag
units and belt tighteners are connected up!
Always finish the self-diagnosis while removing
faults or seeking to determine the origin of a fault
before disconnecting and reconnecting the indi-
vidual airbag components, and then undertake a
new one afterwards!
Airbag locking is only allowed on the front pas-
senger side ⇒ Page 01-15.10. Locking of other
airbag units can only be undertaken in exceptional
circumstances and then only after receiving writ-
ten permission from the PST (the Czech Republic)
or from the importer.
Only check the strands of electrical cable for the
airbag system for short-circuiting or interruptions
when the plugs are disconnected on the airbag and
control unit for the airbag, when the ignition is
switched off and the battery is unclamped!

airbag units when removing and installing the
airbag units ⇒ Page 69-8.
Observe the safety regulations for working on belt
tighteners when removing and installing the belt
tightener ⇒ Page 69-2.2.
Note:
Additional work is to be undertaken when dis-
