Recording an MD right away!
(Synchro-recording)
This section explains the basic procedure for making digital
recordings using an optical cable connected to a CD player, Digital
TV or other digital equipment. (For further information, see“System
limitations” (page 52)) During synchro-recording, the recorder starts
and stopsrecording in sync with the sound source. Track marks are
addedwherever they appearin the sound source.It is recommended to
usethe AC power adaptor when recording.
To record from ananalog sourcesuchasacassettedeck or aradio + “Recording in analog
(Analog Recording)” (page25).
To record using group mode + “Recording tracks using the group function (Group Mode
Recording)” (page 27).
(Use a recordable MD for recording)

Note
If you record on a previously recorded disc, the recorder is factory set to overwrite the
entire contents of the disc. If you want the recording to start after the existing contents,
do the procedure “Recording without overwriting existing material” (page 29) before
doing step 3, “Record an MD.” (page 17).

About the DSP TYPE-R for ATRAC
“TYPE-R’ is ahigh-level Sonyspecification
usedin theDigital Signal Processor(DSP),
which is the heartof the MiniDisc sound.This
technology givesthe MiniDisc recordertwice
the signalprocessingcapability asprevious
MiniDisc Walkman models,producing asound
quality closeto that of MiniDisc decks.This
unit supportsthe “TYPE-R’ function only
during recording or playback in normal stereo
(or monaural) mode.It doesnot supportthis
function in MDLP mode,or during the
checking out of audiodatafrom thecomputer
in normal stereo(or monaural) modeusing
OpenMG Jukebox.
Notes
l Thepausefunction cannotbe turned on or off
manually during synchro-recording.Press n
to stoprecording.
l Do not changeSYNC-R settingwhile
recording. Recording may not be done
properly.
l Even whenthereis no recordedsoundon the
soundsource,there maybecaseswhen
recording doesnot pauseautomatically during
synchro-recording dueto the noiselevel
emitted from the soundsource.

l If asilent portion is encounteredfor
approximately 2 secondsduring synchro-
recording from a soundsourceother than a
CD or anMD, anewtrack mark is
automatically addedat thepoint where the
silent portion ends.
l Youcannotchangetherecording modeduring
recording.
l “Saving” or “Edit” flasheswhile dataof the
recording (thetrack’s start andendpoints,
etc.)is being recorded.Do not movethe
recorderor disconnectthepower sourcewhile
theindication is flashing in the display.
l The lid doesnot open until “Edit” disappears
in the display.
l If thepower supply is disrupted (i.e. the
battery is removedor becomesexhaustedor
theAC power adaptoris disconnected)during
arecording or editing operation,or while
“Edit” appearsin the display,then it will not
bepossible to openthe lid until power is
restored.
l Youcanmakeadigital recording only from an
optical type output.
l When recording from aportable CD player,
setthe CD player to pause,andthen do the
recording procedureon the recorder.
l Note thefollowing whenrecording from a
portableCD player:
-Some portable CD players may not be
capableof digital out when theAC power
adaptoris disconnected.If this is thecase,
connecttheAC power adaptorto the
portable CD player anduseit on AC power
asthepower source.
-On someportable CD players,optical
output may not bepossiblewhen using an
anti-skip function (e.g.,ESF or G-
PROTECTION). If this is thecase,turn off
the anti-skip function.

l When thereis no soundfrom theplayer for
more than3 secondsduring synchro-
recording, the recordergoesinto thestandby
modeautomatically. When the soundcomes
frotn the player again,the recorderresumes
synchro-recording.If therecorderis kept in
thestandbymodefor 5 minutes or longer, the
recorder stopsautomatically.
l For longer recording, follow step 1of “Long-
time recording (MDLP)” (page26) to select
therecording mode,andthen startthe
procedureof synchro-recording.
l LINE IN (OPTICAL) jack is for both digital
andanaloginput. The recorder automatically
recognizesthe type of line cableandswitches
to digital or analoginput.
l Therecording level is adjustedautomatically.
To adjustthelevel manually, see“Adjusting
therecording level manually (Manual
Recording)” (page31).
l You canmonitor the soundduring recording.
Connecttheheadphones/earphonesto c! and
adjustthe volume by pressingVOL +/-. This
doesnot affect therecording level.

Note
When you connectthe recorderto your computerfor the first time, make sureto install the
“OpenMG Jukeboxsoftware” and“Net MD driver” from the suppliedCD-ROM. If OpenMG
Jukeboxhasalreadybeeninstalled, you shouldinstall the driver for the Net MD before
connectingtherecorderto your computer.If you connecttherecorderto thecomputerwithout
first installing theNet MD driver, the recorderwill not operateproperly.
