1. Before Deploying
Congratulations on the purchase of your Sophos APX Series access point. This Quick Start Guide
provides you with instructions to connect the access point and do the initial configuration.
Before you begin, please make sure that you have access to one of the following products which
include the Sophos wireless controller needed to manage your Sophos access point:
ÌSophos Wireless (Sophos Central managed)
ÌSophos XG Firewall*
ÌSophos UTM*
Please ensure you have a valid license for one of the above products.
To power and connect your access point you will need to have either a PoE injector (available as an
accessory from your Sophos partner) or a PoE switch plus an RJ45 Ethernet cable.
Warning: To ensure safe operation, this product is intended to be used only with Listed,
IEEE 802.3at-compliant, Power over Ethernet Power Sourcing Equipment that is
designed for connection to outdoor devices. If you need assistance with selecting or
purchasing an appropriate power source, please contact your local Sophos sales
representative.

2. Mounting and Connection
For instructions on how to mount your access point, please see section Mounting Instructions at the
end of this Quick Start Guide or the Operating Instructions under www.sophos.com/get-started-ap.
Warning: This equipment has a separate protective earthing terminal on the chassis
which must be permanently connected to earth ground to adequately ground the
chassis and protect the operator from electrical hazards. The installation of the earth
grounding must be done by a skilled service personnel.
Caution: Before you begin the installation, ensure that service personnel has attached an appropriate
grounding lug to the grounding cable that you supply.
Power installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with National Electrical
Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 and Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1.
To connect earth ground to unit:
ÌConnect one end of the grounding
cable to a proper earth ground.
ÌPlace the grounding lug attached to the grounding
wire over the protective earthing terminal.
ÌSecure the grounding lug to the protective earthing
terminal with the supplied washers and screws.
ÌDress the grounding cable and ensure that it does not
touch or block access to other components.
Warning: Prior to powering on the unit, connect the frame of the unit to earth. For the
earthing wire, green and yellow insulation is required, and the cross-sectional area of the
conductor must be more than 0.75mm2or 18 AWG.

Connect the LAN (PoE) port of the access point to a PoE switch or PoE injector using an RJ45
Ethernet cable.
NOTE: The power supply cord(s) of the PoE injector or PoE Switch must be plugged into socket-
outlet(s) with earthing connection"
The access point will now boot and try to receive an IP address via DHCP (either from the Sophos
firewall or another DHCP server in your network).
After successfully receiving an IP address, the access point attempts to communicate with either the
Sophos XG firewall/UTM or Sophos Central. In order to do so, the firewall needs to either be the default
gateway of the access point or be on the default route (most likely your route to the internet).
Whilst waiting for DHCP and searching for the wireless controller, the access point status LED will
show its current state (please see the following table).
3. Configuration
After successful connection to the wireless controller the status LED turns to solid green. The access
point is now ready to be managed.
Please refer to the documentation of your Sophos XG Firewall/UTM or the Sophos Central online help
to start the configuration of your access point.

mount it to a pole. Both options require the use of the mounting bracket which is shipped with your
access point. The following sections provide detailed instructions on each of these options.

Wall mount
1. Use the mounting bracket to mark the screw mounting positions on the wall
2. Attach the access point to the bracket by hanging the 4 forge posts into the attachment slots of
the bracket and pressing it down.

Pole Mount
1. Attach the two metal clamps to the back of the mounting bracket using the vertical or horizontal
mounting slots (according to the desired orientation).
2. Hold the bracket against the pole and tighten the metal clamps.
3. Attach the access point to the bracket by hanging the 4 forge posts into the attachment slots of
the bracket and pressing it down.

2. Montage und Anschluss
Informationen zur Montage Ihres Access Points finden Sie im Abschnitt Montageanleitung am Ende
dieser Kurzanleitung oder in der Betriebsanleitung unter www.sophos.com/get-started-ap.
Warnung: Dieses Gerät hat einen separaten Schutzerdungsanschluss am Gehäuse, der
ständig mit der Erde verbunden sein muss, um das Gehäuse richtig zu erden und die
Bedienperson vor elektrischen Gefahren zu schützen. Die Installation der Erdung muss
von qualifiziertem Servicepersonal vorgenommen werden.
Achtung: Stellen Sie vor der Installation sicher, dass das Servicepersonal eine geeignete
Erdungsklemme an das von Ihnen bereitgestellte Erdungskabel angebracht hat.
Die Elektroinstallation muss von einem qualifizierten Elektriker gemäß dem National Electrical Code,
ANSI/NFPA 70, und dem Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1, durchgeführt werden.
So erden Sie das Gerät:
ÌVerbinden Sie das eine Ende des Erdungskabels
mit einer geeigneten Erde.
ÌDie an dem Erdungskabel befestigte Erdungsklemme
muss über dem Schutzerdungsanschluss platziert sein.
ÌFixieren Sie die Erdungsklemme mit den
mitgelieferten Unterlegscheiben und
Schrauben am Schutzerdungsanschluss.
ÌVerlegen Sie das Erdungskabel so, dass es keine andere
Komponenten berührt oder stört.
Warnung: Verbinden Sie vor dem Einschalten des Geräts den Rahmen des Geräts mit
der Erde. Für das Erdungskabel ist eine grüne und gelbe Isolierung erforderlich und die
Querschnittsfläche des Leiters muss mehr als 0,75 mm2bzw. 18 AWG betragen.
Verbinden Sie den LAN-Anschluss (PoE) Ihres Access Points über ein RJ45-Ethernet-
Kabel mit einem PoE-Switch oder PoE-Injektor.

Verbinden Sie den LAN-Anschluss (PoE) Ihres Access Points über ein RJ45-Ethernet-Kabel mit
einem PoE-Switch oder PoE-Injektor.
HINWEIS: Das/die Netzkabel des PoE-Injectors oder des PoE-Switches müssen an eine/mehrere
Steckdose(en) mit Erdungsanschluss angeschlossen werden.
Der Access Point fährt hoch und versucht, eine IP-Adresse über DHCP zu erhalten (entweder von der
Sophos Firewall oder einem anderen DHCP-Server in Ihrem Netzwerk).
Nach erfolgreichem Erhalt einer IP-Adresse startet der Access Point einen Kommunikationsversuch
mit entweder der Sophos XG Firewall/UTM oder Sophos Central. Hierfür muss die Firewall entweder
das Standard-Gateway des Access Points sein oder sich auf der Standard-Route befinden (sehr
wahrscheinlich Ihre Verbindung zum Internet).
Während der Access Point auf die Antwort des DHCP-Server wartet und nach dem Wireless Controller
sucht, zeigt die Status-LED des Access Points seinen aktuellen Zustand an (siehe nachfolgende
Tabelle).
3. Konfiguration
Nach erfolgreicher Verbindung mit dem Wireless Controller leuchtet die Status-LED konstant grün.
Der Access Point kann nun verwaltet werden.
Bitte lesen Sie die Dokumentation Ihrer Sophos XG Firewall/UTM oder die Online-Hilfe für Sophos
Central, um Ihren Access Point zu konfigurieren.

Sie können zwischen unterschiedlichen Montagemöglichkeiten wählen und Ihren Access Point
an der Wand oder an einer Stange befestigen. Für beide Möglichkeiten wird die mitgelieferte

Wandmontage
1. Zeichnen Sie die Schraubenpositionen mit Hilfe der Montagehalterung an der Wand an.
2. Befestigen Sie den Access Point an der Halterung, indem Sie die vier Befestigungspunkte in die
entsprechenden Öffnungen in der Halterung einführen und andrücken.
3. Ziehen Sie die Schrauben an, um den Access Point an der Halterung zu fixieren.
