Chapter 1 About This Guide
This installation guide for the OA5720 router family contains information on how to correctly install the device in a
working environment.
1.1 Supported Devices
The information provided in this installation guide only applies to the OA5720 router family.
1.2 Who should read this manual?
This manual should be read by the support personnel who need to configure, maintain and monitor the device.
1.3 When should this manual be read?
Read this guide as soon as you are ready to familiarize yourself with the device and its components.
This manual will help you understand your new device in greater depth.

Chapter 2 OA5720 Devices
2.1 Characteristics
2.1.1 Power Supply
For further information on the different OA5720 power supplies, please see Components and Power Supply on page 5
, under section Power Source on page 12.
2.1.2 Hardware Monitoring
The only way to monitor the OA5720 router family hardware is through the LEDs on the front panel. The LEDs
provide visual information on the state of the device. They indicate the condition of the hardware components, if
there is connectivity, data flow, etc.
For further information on the LEDs panel, please see Components on page 5.

Chapter 3 Components and Power Supply
The following chapter provides detailed information on the chassis of the OA5720 router family and its components.
This information includes:

3.1 Components
3.1.1 Front Panel
The following figure shows the front panel.

The front panel elements are as follows:

figuration and monitoring purposes.

The LEDs panel provides information on the status of the components (if they are active or not) and on the network

3.1.2 Rear Panel
The following figure shows the rear panel. Here you will find the majority of the OA5720 router family connectors.

The following table provides information on each connector as well as a description:

Item Description
A SIM Card. Slot where you can insert SIM card for the external 3G module.
B USB. Slot where you can insert a 3G USB modem.
C 4-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch.
D RST. Reset button. For further information on how the reset button works, please
see RST Button on page 13.
E WPS (Wireless Protected Setup). This allows for easy and secure configuration of
the WiFi network parameters.
F WiFi Antenna nº3. This connector is used or not, depending on the WiFi card the
router has.
G Eth WAN. WAN Gigabit Ethernet.
H On/Off switch.
I Power source connection (PSU).
3.1.3 Side Panels
Two WiFi antenna and two 3G antenna connectors are located on the side panels, two each on either side.

3.1.4 Underside Panel
The following elements can be found on the underside panel:

The following table contains details on the significant elements on the underside panel.

Item Description
A Internal 3G module SIM tray. It’s accessed from the underside of the router.
B Adhesive rubber feet (these are not required if mounted in a rack).
3.2 Expansion Slot
The OA5720 router family has an expansion slot, so you may increase its features and interfaces by inserting differ-
ent cards or boards.
This slot is located on the router’s "Front panel" as shown in Figure 6:

To correctly insert the cards, please follow these steps:
(1) Switch off the device and remove the data cables as described in section on Disconnecting on page 13".
(2) Remove the device from the workplace and place it in a stable, safe location where it can be easily accessed
and handled.
(3) Unscrew the screws on the front panel in order to dismantle the tray that gives access to the expansion cards.
Please see Fig. 6 on page 9.

(4) Once unscrewed, pull out the tray from the front panel slot. Please see Fig. 7 on page 9.

(5) If the card is provided with the tray fixed, skip to the next step. Otherwise, once you have extracted the tray,
place the card in the correct position. Once this has been done, attach the card using the appropriate screws
(making sure you don't damage it during the tightening process). Please see Fig. 8 on page 9.

(6) Finally, insert the tray into the device once again using the appropriate guides. See Fig. 9 on page 10.

(7) Screw the tray to the device. See Fig. 10 on page 10.

(8) Connect a terminal to the console and check that the device detects the expansion card.
3.3 Installation in a rack
The OA5720 device family can be installed in a 19” rack. The strips and screws needed are not provided by default
and need to be acquired separately.
Both strips are attached to the device through 4 screws (2 on each side) as shown in Figure 12.

3.3.1 Standalone
The OA5720 devices can be placed as a standalones on a flat, stable surface. The adhesive rubber feet must be
stuck to the underside panel to prevent the router from sliding.

Make sure there is enough space around the router (for ventilation purposes) and check that the electricity cables
can reach it.
3.3.2 Wall mounting
The OA5720 can be mounted on the wall. This optional kit can be ordered together with the OA5720, or separately.
The anchors to mount the device on the wall must be installed as shown in the following figure, using the screws
provided by the manufacturer.

Once the anchors have been placed, you can place the device on the wall as shown in the upper right hand figure.
Warning
The screws must go into a wall stud (wood) or a wall anchor of the appropriate type for the wall. Screws
into drywall are not strong enough to mount the router.
The above figures show the wall-mounting features on the OA5720 router.

(1) Install the two (or four) wall studs horizontally and separately in a wall or any other vertical surface.
Warning
If you install the router in drywall, use hollow-wall anchors (8mm - 5/16 inch) to secure the screws.
If the screws are not properly anchored, the strain of the cables connected to the router back pan-
el could pull the router from the wall.
(2) Place the router on the wall and attach it using the screws (3.5x30). The figure shows how to install it correctly

so that it can be safely used.
3.4 Plug-in Modules
The only module that can be inserted in the device is the 3G USB modem. In order to view the list of 3G modems
that are supported, please go to the following website: service.esd.alcatel-lucent.com.
3.4.1 Installation
To install the USB modem, simply insert it in the USB slot on the rear panel as shown in the following figure:

3.4.2 Uninstall
To remove the device, simply remove it from the slot where it was inserted. See Fig. 13 on page 12.
3.5 Power Source
The OA5720 router family is powered though an external AC/DC source.
Workplace Conditions. Main Characteristics
• Avoid humid and or dusty locations.
• Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided as well as other heat sources. The device should not be placed
amongst papers, magazines or other elements that could hinder natural air circulation.
• The device should not be placed very close to strong electromagnetic fields such as speakers, engines, etc.
• Knocks and/or strong vibrations should be avoided during transport, operation and storage.
Warning
The electric current in power cables, telephone lines and communication cables is dangerous. To pre-
vent electric shocks, before installing, handling or opening the equipment covers, connect and discon-
nect the cables following the steps set forth in Connecting on page 13 andDisconnecting on page 13.
3.5.1 Connecting to the power source
To connect the power supply to the device, please follow the steps set forth in section Connecting on page 13.
To avoid electric shocks, residual current circulation and other unwanted effects, also affecting communications, the
following is recommended:
Warning
All interconnected communication devices should be plugged to THE SAME GROUNDED POWER
OUTLET, which should at the same time be of good quality (lower than 10 ohms).
Whether the workplace is provided with an uninterrupted power supply system (UPS), regulated supply
or it is independent from the rest (such as lighting, etc.); it is highly recommended that all data devices

should be connected to the same power source. This will avoid operating and premature aging prob-
lems of drivers and other components.
3.5.2 Connecting
• Make sure that the device’s power supply switch is in the OFF position (0).
• Ensure that the power supply is NOT connected to either the electricity or the device.
• Connect all data cables.
• Connect the power supply cable to the device.
• Connect the power supply cable to the electricity supply.
• Set the router’s power supply switch on the ON position (1).
3.5.3 Disconnecting
• Make sure that the device’s power supply switch is in the OFF position (0).
• Disconnect the power supply from the electricity supply.
• Disconnect the power supply from the device.
• Disconnect the data cables.
3.6 RST Button
The different features of the RST button are described below.
3.6.1 Rebooting the device
Once the device is operating normally, pressing the RST button will make it restart.
3.6.2 Default Configuration
The RST button allows you to boot the device with its default configuration through the following steps:
• With the device switched off, keep the RST button pressed and switch on the router through the ON/OFF switch
(1).
• The PSU LED (green) will light up and the LED Slot will begin to blink (amber). This blinking will continue for 10
seconds.
• For the device to boot with the default configuration, stop pressing the RST button while the LED Slot is blinking,
i.e. before the 10 second period expires.
The default configuration for the router establishes the access IP and mask address as follows:
• IP address: 192.168.1.1
• IP mask: 255.255.255.0
Note
Some devices leave the factory with customized settings. This personalization can mean that the de-
fault configuration is different from the one shown above.
3.7 Connecting the data
The OA5720 router family has the following data connections.

3.7.1 4-port Ethernet Switch
The OA5720 router family incorporates a 4-port 10/100/1000 BaseT Switch with automatic MDI/MDIX to connect to a
local area network (LAN).
Please pay careful attention to the labeling so you do not mix this switch with other types of ports:

Note
During booting and in BIOS mode, only the LAN 1 connector is available.
Warning
The equipment must be used with the power supply provided by the manufacturer.
3.7.2 WAN Connection
The OA5720 router family incorporates an Ethernet WAN 10/100/1000 BaseT port with automatic MDI/MDIX.
The WAN port is independent from the Switch and is handled as just one more interface.
Please pay careful attention to the labeling so you do not mix this switch with other types of ports:

Note
During booting and in BIOS mode, the WAN connector is not operative.
3.7.3 WWAN Antenna Connection (Cell connector)
The OA5720 router family has two connectors for 3G antennas. To assemble and disassemble the antennas, simply
screw them into the connectors labeled Cell (located on the side panels of the router).
Installing these antennas in the OA5720 router is essential in order to improve the quality of the signal received and
transmitted by the cellular model.
