WELCOME TO YOUR RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEM!
ELECTRICITY FROM THE WIND AND SUN:
Renewable electric power systems provide independent (no utility grid!) electric power for boats, homeowners,
farms, villages and commercial applications such as telecommunications. If utility power is available, your
renewable energy system can reduce the electric bill and provide back up electricity during storms or line failure.
The most common sources of renewable electric power in these systems are small wind powered generators and
solar photovoltaic (pv) modules that convert sunlight directly to electricity. Renewable means power sources that
do not deplete the world's finite fossil fuel resources, do not pollute or warm the atmosphere and do not generate
hazardous waste. Electricity means your children can study at night for a better future and you can benefit from
appliances, power tools and communication technologies that make life easier and more rewarding. Nearly three
billion people in the world do not have electricity and by necessity most will ultimately get their electricity from
renewable resources to the benefit of everybody. You are a pioneer and part of the solution!
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
Read this entire manual. Identify and note your model wind generator where it appears in this manual. Following
the instructions and recommendations in this manual will help assure safe and enjoyable use of your new
renewable energy system.
SAFETY INFORMATION: These systems present mechanical, electrical and chemical (battery) hazards
that can be life threatening. The tower or support structure could fall and cause injury or death and
property destruction. A component of the wind generator could come loose causing injury or death and
property destruction. Contact with the high speed propeller can result in severe injury or death. High
voltage from the wind generator or the inverter can cause injury or electrocution. A burn injury can result
from an electrical short. A severe chemical burn including blinding can occur from a battery explosion or
contact with the sulfuric acid in a lead-acid battery.
These conditions are addressed in the following safety messages:
STOP! DANGER! It is your responsibility to obtain all required permits and engineering certifications for your
tower and tower location. Soil and wind conditions vary and towers and tower foundations must be designed for
your specific location. Tower must not be able to fall on occupied buildings, neighbor's property or power lines.
Tower climbing is dangerous and should be attempted only by experienced personnel using proper safety
equipment. A fold-over tower can eliminate climbing. Locate your mounting mast (tower) well away from
occupied buildings and power lines; a minimum of 100m (300 ft) is recommended.
STOP! DANGER! If the generator appears or sounds loose in the tower or is making an unusual sound, the
condition must be corrected immediately. A loose generator or component will soon damage itself further and
may fall from the tower or lose parts that could be lethal. Never stand in line with an operating propeller.
STOP! DANGER! Provide climbing protection against all unauthorized persons or children. Never allow an
untrained person or someone without the proper safety equipment to climb the tower. Always stop the propeller
before climbing the tower. Both falling from the tower and contact with the operating propeller can be lethal.
STOP! DANGER! High voltage systems (that is, systems with battery voltages of 64 volts and above or the
primary side of any system with a transformer) represent a dangerous shock hazard and could be lethal. All high
voltage systems should be wired and maintained by a qualified and licensed electrician.
STOP! DANGER! Batteries may emit explosive and irritating gas while charging. Never turn on a light switch or
make any other electrical connection or light a match or make any type of spark near a recently-charged battery.
Use protective gloves and eyeglasses when working around a battery. Turn off all loads, wear safety glasses, and
look away when making a final battery connection.
STOP! DANGER! NEVER place objects on top or near the EZ-WIRE enclosure. These devices must dissipate
heat as part of normal operation. FIRE AND FAILURE can result if airflow is blocked.

DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEMS
The illustration below depicts a typical installation. For more information regarding specifications and content of
the packaged wind, wind/solar and inverter systems, contact Southwest Windpower.
Whisper WindGenerators include the EZ-WIRE SystemCenter andthe user supplies the battery, tower,
inverter and wiring. During windless periods, solar panels may supplement your usage of renewable energy. Solar
PV (photovoltaic) panels make electricity directly from sunlight. Batteries store electricity so you have power
during windless and sunless periods as well as periods of high demand. A deep cycle type of battery must be used.
If you have the wind generator only, use this manual to help size the battery and inverter.

1. SYSTEM VOLTAGE:
All system components, Whisper wind generator, solar PV panels, EZ-WIRE System Center, diversion load,
transformer (3000hv only) and inverter must match battery voltage according to the table below. Battery voltage and
distance determine the wire sizes. See TROUBLE SHOOTING AND REPAIR section to change the voltage from stan-
dard.

2. TOWER LOCATION/TYPE AND
HEIGHT. INSTALL TOWER
(Install tower following manufacturer’s instructions.)
Tower height minimum is 7 meters (20 feet) above trees or
obstacles within 100m (300ft). The lateral thrust rating at
top must match wind generator model. The highest point
on your property is generally best, but wind generator dis-
tance to battery and the battery voltage determine the cor-
rect wire size (Refer to wire size table pg. 15). A self sup-
porting tower occupies less ground area than a guyed tower
but is more expensive. A fold over design permits easy in-
stallation and maintenance on the ground and eliminates
the need for climbing.
Whisper Models H20, H40 & H80 are suitable for
roof or side-of-building mounting on unoccupied
buildings such as garage, barn or factory. Some vibration
transmission will be noticeable from roof mounts.
Foundations must be designed and approved for local
wind/soil conditions.

2. LOCALIZACION DE LA TORRE / TIPO Y
ALTURA. INSTALACION DE LA TORRE
(Instale la torre de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante)
La altura mínima de la torre debe ser de 7 metros (20 pies)
por encima de los árboles u obstáculos en un radio de 100
m (300 pies). La carga de empuje lateral en el extremo de
la torre debe corresponder al modelo del Aerogenerador
(ver tabla “Price list“). El punto más alto del terreno o
lugar de instalación, es generalmente el mejor; recuerde
que la distancia del Aerogenerador al banco de baterías, y
su voltaje, determinan el calibre adecuado de los cables
(Vea para el calibre de los cables). Una torre autoportante
ocupa menos área de terreno que una torre soportada con
cables (riendas, obenques, tirantes), pero es más costosa.
Un diseño de torre pivotada permite una instalación
sencilla y un mantenimiento fácil en tierra, eliminando la
necesidad de escalar.
Los modelos WHISPER H20, H40 y H80 son adecuados
para ser montados sobre los techos o en montajes anexas a
edificaciones deshabitadas tales como garajes, graneros o
fábricas. Algunas vibraciones por transmisión serán

4. CHOOSE BATTERY LOCATION
INSTALL BATTERY
Locate battery in cool, dry unoccupied building. Run AC
power from inverter to house or load. If battery is in an
occupied building, an enclosure with vent to outside is
required. Follow code. See the following diagrams for
package system series/parallel arrangement.
Determine series/parallel arrangement and construct a rack or
mount from heavy, treated lumber. Allow 5 cm (2 in) on all
sides for ventilation. Allow 60 cm (2 ft) vertical separation
for access to terminals and checking water.
Follow DC WIRE SIZE tables or inverter instructions for
wire size connections. Coat all connections with grease or
corrosion protector available at auto parts store. Install EZ-
WIRE and Inverter fuse (if used) at battery positive.
4. SELECCIÓN DEL LUGAR PARA

deshabitada. Ponga a funcionar la energía AC desde el

suficiente ventilación. Siga los códigos. Observe los

Determine la configuración en serie/paralelo y construya un
estante, o monte las baterías sobre un mueble resistente, en
madera tratada. Deje 5 cms. (2 pulg) alrededor, para
ventilación. Deje 60 cms (2 pies) de separación vertical para
el acceso a los terminales y revisión del agua.
Siga las tablas TAMANO DE LOS CABLES DC, o las
instrucciones para el cableado de las baterías al inversor.
Proteja todas las conexiones con grasa o protector de
corrosión, disponibles en un almacén de autopartes. Instale el
EZ-WIRE y el fusible del inversor (sí se usa) al polo positivo
de las baterías.

8. INSTALL INVERTER ON WALL OR
SHELF AND CONNECT TO BATTERY
Install DC175 or DC250 breaker enclosure between SW
inverters and battery positive. Use wires included in
package and follow inverter manufacturer's instructions.

transformer on 175 hvlv. Using #6 Awg wire connect to
“WIND” terminals of the EZ-WIRE

6. INSTALL AND CONNECT DIVERSIONLOAD
Install diversion load on a heat resistant surface.
Diversion load will produce heat when the battery is full.
Diversion load is preconnected in the EZ90/900. In all other
models locate the diversion load next to EZ-WIRE or where
heat is needed. See DC wire size table on previous page to
extend distance of diversion load from EZ-Wire.

Install EZ-WIRE and transformer on heat resistant surface.
Locate a maximum of 3m (10 ft) from each other.
Connect transformer to EZ-WIRE WIND terminals with #6
awg wire. Connect EZ-WIRE DC+ and DC– to battery,
using wires in package or see DC wire size tables on the
previous page. Whisper hv (high voltage) becomes a hvlv
model (highvoltage-low voltage) with the addition of
transformer.

9. INSTALL SOLAR PANELS AND
CONNECT TO EZ-WIRE
Face panels south on roof or location with unblocked sun
from 9am to 5pm. Elevate to November/February sun
angle. See DC Wiring Table for the correct wire size.
Series connection adds voltage. Parallel connection adds
current. Follow solar PV manufacturer’s instructions.
9. INSTALE LOS MODULOS SOLARES Y

Use 3 wires. Add ground wire from tower to house ground
for hv and hvlv models. Find correct wire sizes from the
“Wire Size from Wind Generator” tables for your
particular model.

stop wind generator at remote location such as tower base.
This switch is an outdoor enclosure and serves as an
electrical disconnect. Connect to wires from wind
generator (see next step) using split bolts.
Use #6 awg wire.
10. OPCIONAL: INSTALE UN
INTERRUPTOR DE FRENADO EXTRA

TESTS
Complete these tests before mounting blades to rotor.
These tests confirm that the wind generator is functional
and ready to install on the tower.

WIND GENERATOR TO TOWER
Whisper H20, H40, H80 and 80 Tower Mount
Mounting Instructions
Check fit and hole alignment of insert inside tower. A
maximum of 1.5mm (1/16in) play is allowed. You must be
able to pull pipe or tube tight against insert with mounting
bolts.
Install insert on yaw shaft with slot facing down. Slot used
for tower wire support. Use medium-strength thread lock-
ing compound on all fasteners. M6 X 10 Allen head set-
screws must engage both holes in yaw shaft
Use plastic wire nuts or split bolts to make electrical con-
nections. Any wind generator wire can go to any tower
wire. Wrap split bolts thoroughly with electrical tape to
prevent shorts to tower. Support wires to avoid weight on
slip ring wires.
Slide generator without propeller into tower and install
mounting hardware as shown.

Revise el ajuste de los accesorios de inserción dentro de la torre

nos de montaje, ajustadamente, dentro de la torre.
Instale los accesorios de inserción en el eje vertical con la mues-
ca hacia abajo. La muesca se usa para soportar los cables eléctri-
cos del EZ-WIRE en el interior de la torre. Use compuesto sella-
dor para roscas en todas las uniones roscadas. Los tornillos de
cabeza Allen deben penetrar ambos agujeros del eje vertical.
Use caperuzas plásticas o pernos conectores para hacer las co-
nexiones eléctricas. Cualquier cable del EZ-WIRE pude conectar-
se a cualquier cable del generador. Cubra muy bien los pernos
conectores con suficiente cinta aislante para prevenir cortos con
la torre. Soporte bien los cables para evitar que se separen o rom-
pan por su propio peso.
Deslice el eje vertical del generador, sin las aspas, dentro de la

Whisper 175 Tower Mount
Mounting Instructions
Check the fit and hole alignment of insert inside tower. A
maximum of 1.5mm (1/16in) play is allowed. Tower Pipe or
tube must be tight against insert when mounting bolts tight-
ened.
Install insert on yaw shaft with unthreaded hole facing down.
Install M8x30 bolt (2) and lockwasher (4) in this hole and
engage threaded hole near bottom of yaw shaft. Use 4mm
allen wrench and tighten allen screws (7) against yaw shaft.
Install nylock nuts (6) as locking nuts over screws (7) and
tighten against insert.
Use plastic wire nuts or split bolts to make electrical connec-
tions. Wind generator wires can go to any tower wire. Wrap
split bolts thoroughly with electrical tape to prevent shorts to
tower. Support the wires to avoid weight on slip ring wires.
Slide generator without propeller into tower and install
mounting hardware as shown.

Do not install propeller until test ok.
Repeat Step 12 using brake switch to short wires.

SHORT CIRCUIT/CORTO CIRCUITO
-With the wires from the wind Generator connected to
the EZ-Wire and with the brake switch on, the rotor
should turn with strong uniform resistance.

ON, el rotor debe girar con alta resistencia, pero
uniformemente.
OPEN CIRCUIT/CIRCUITO ABIERTO
-When the wires from the wind generator are
connected to the EZ-Wire and the brake is off, the
generator should spin freely.
