In
February
and
March,1937,
the
USAACissuedspecificationscalling
for
highaltitude,single
and
twin
engined
interceptors.
The
YoungBell
Company,
inthe
course
ofthe
singleenginedinterceptorcompetition,proposed
two
projects,designated
No.3
and4.The
No.4project
wonthe
contest,
andthe
USAACordered
the
manufacture
ofa
prototype.
The
aircraft
was
designated
the
XP-39,
andit
firsttook
totheairon
April
6.
1939.
The
aircraftfeatured
a
veryunorthodoxdesignconsisting
ofa
tricyclelandinggear,
and
with
the
enginesuperchargerlocatedbehind
the
cockpit.
The
canopyitself
wasofa
tear dropshape,withcar-likeboardingdoors.
The
firstflighttestrevealed
low
performance,
andthe
prototype
testing
was
moved
toa
windtunnel.Subsequentmodificationcomprised
the
deletion
ofthe
supercharger,which
wasa
source
of
excessivedrag.
The
modifiedaircraft
was
re-designated
asthe
XP-39B.
The
deletion
ofthe
superchargerlater
ledtolow
performance
at
higher
altitudes,
and
what
was
originallyintended
asa
highaltitudefighter,became
a lowand
mediumaltitudefighter.SubsequentP-39s
were
powered
by
engineswithoutsuperchargers(twoaircraftweretestedwithexternallymountedsuperchargersabove
or
below
the
fuselage).
The
pre-productionbatch
of
13
YP-39s
was
followed
bythe
first productionversion,
the
P-39C.
Thisversionserved
for
flight
training
intheUSA
only.
At
thattime,
the
SecondWorld
Warhad
beengoing
onfor
over
a
year,
andasa
result,
the
P-39wereordered
by
French
and
Britishpurchasing
groups,France
had
surrenderedbefore
the
P-39s
could
be
delivered.
The
aircraftdelivered
to
GreatBritainreceived
the
exportdesignation
P-400,
and
werenamedCaribouMk.l.Thisname
was
soonchanged
to
Airacobra Mk.l.
The
aircraftwere
a big
disappointment.They
not
only
didnot
perform
as
advertised,
but
highaltitudeperformance
was
bad.Theywereassigned
tothe
601st
Squadron,
butRAF
service
didnst
last
long,
and
most
of
the
aircraftweredelivered
to
the
USSR.
A
part
of
the
delivery
for
GreatBritain
was
confiscated
for
the
USAAF.When
Pearl
Harbor
was
attacked,theseaircraftweredeployed
tothe
Pacificareaunder
the
designation
P-400.
The
P-39Dproduced
forthe
USAAF.
an
equivalent
ofthe
exportversion,
is
associatedwith
initial
combatagainstJapan.
At
thattime,
the
Airacobrasbegan
to
earntheir
bad
reputation
The
blame
can
however
be
attributed
tothe
combatconditionsratherthan
tothe
typeitself.Americanpilotsfoundthemselves
in
defensive
fights,
andso
were
ata
disadvantage.Airacobraswerefurtherdeveloped
and
produced
asthe
P-39F,
J,K,L,M,N andQ.
Specific
versions
differed
in
equipment,enginevariants,
and
propellertypes.
The
lastversion,
the
P-39Qreceivedheavyarmament.
The
wingmounted
7.7mm
machine
guns
were
deleted
and
12.7
mm
machine
guns
in
pods
were
mounted
below
the
wing.
USAAF
deployed
Airacobras
against
Japan
in
the
Pacifictheatre,
andin
Africa (USAAFP-39swerestationed
on
BritishIslands
but
werelaterrelocated
to
Africa).
The
post
warerasaw
the
Airacobra
in
RAAFservice
and
alsowith
the
French,
Italian
and
Portuguese
air
forces.
The
biggestuserbesides
the
USAAF
wastheRed
Army
Air
Force.Airacobrasproved
tobe
veryeffectiveunderEasternFrontconditionswherecombattookplace
atlow
altitudes.Theywere
oneofthe
most
popularfighteraircraftamong
theRed
Army
Air
Forcepilots,
and
manyAcesusedthem
as
personalmounts.

Original
camouflage
consisted
of
Dark Green
and
Dark
Earth
on
upper surfaces
and
Sky
on
lower
ones.
According
to the new
specifications
was
Dark
Earth
replaced
by
grey color.
Thanks
to the
shortage
of
Ocean
Grey
this
Squadron used
itsown
mixed
color
named
Mixed
Grey.
The
lower
surfaces
were over sprayed
by
Medium
Sea
Grey.
The
division
lines
between
Dark
Green
and
Mixed Grey sported
random
remains
of
Dark
Earth.
