1.1 - FACE PLATE BEARING RACE INSTAL-
LATION
BN000283 must be pressed into CB005
Face Plate. Make sure the race is square to
the face plate prior to pressing. The race
should be pressed against the inside shoulder
of the plate bore. Failure to seat the race
against the shoulder at this step will result in
knife gap problems during final assembly.
NOTE: Earlier models use a face plate that
has a retaining ring instead of a machined
shoulder. For these models, make sure the
race is pressed against the retaining ring.

2.1 – ROTATING KNIFE HOLDER & SHAFT ASSEMBL
Insert CX008341 1/2” x 3” long keystock (supplied with rotating holder) into the CB006040 FLYWHEEL
SHAFT keyway, with the notched corner of the key to the inside shoulder of the shaft keyway (Figure 2-
1). This is necessary to provide clearance between the key and machined radius of the shaft keyway.
NOTE: Always use an anti-seize lubricating compound (such as E-Z Break) prior to pressing the holder
onto the shaft. This prevents the shaft from galling and binding to the rotating knife holder.
With the key inserted into the shaft keyway, press the rotating knife holder onto the shaft, aligning the
keyways (Figures 2-2, 2-3). Press the rotating holder onto the shaft until it rests against the shaft
shoulder.
2.2 – SPACER PLATE INSTALLATION

Insert BN002758 2 1/4”ID TAPERED BEARING onto the flywheel shaft and slide into bearing race. The
bearing should not have to be forced onto the shaft, however it may be necessary to support the shaft
while sliding the bearing into place, as shown in Figure 4-2.
Insert BN007764 2 3/4” BEARING SEAL onto the shaft and tap into the rear plate bore until flush. Be
sure to use a tool that makes contact with the entire surface of the seal to assure proper installation.

SECTION 5– SETTING THE KNIFE GAP
Figure 5-1: Lock rotating holder in place from top. Figure 5-2: Tighten front lock nut first.
Figure 5-3: Tighten until knives make contact. Figure 5-4: Lock holder in place from bottom.
5.1 – SETTING THE KNIFE GAP
Wedge a piece of wood (or similar) between the ro-
tating holder and housing to keep it from spinning
while tightening the front lock nut. MAKE SURE THE
REAR LOCK NUT IS LOOSE – this will allow the knife
holder to move forward toward the stationary knife
as the front lock nut is tightened. Use Span-A-
Wrench or similar tool to tighten the front lock nut.
Tighten until the knives make contact, as shown in
Figure 5-3.
Figure 5-5: Tighten rear lock nut.
Lock the rotating knife holder in the opposite direction, as shown in Figure 5-4. Tighten the rear lock
nut. Apply an initial torque of approximately 100 lb-ft to the rear lock nut to pull the rotating knife away
from the stationary knife.

SECTION 5– (cont.)
Figure 5-6: Check knife gap with feeler gauges. Figure 5-7: Rotate new bearings to properly seat.
Figure 5-8: Bend lock washer tab into place. Figure 5- : Bend front lock washer tab into place.
Rotate knives by each other and check knife gap using feeler gauges (Figure 5-6). Tightening the rear
lock nut should have pulled the rotating knife away from the stationary knife. The knife gap should be
GREATER THAN .002”-.005”. This allows room to tighten the front lock nut in the next step.
NOTE: If new bearings are being used, at this point the rotating knife holder should be ro-
tated 20-30 revolutions, in each direction, to properly seat the bearings.
Tighten the front lock nut again to pull the rotating knife holder BACK TOWARD THE STATIONARY
KNIFE. This should require approximately 180-220 lb-ft of torque.
NOTE: Torque required is approximate. The purpose of alternating tightening of the lock
nuts is to preload the housing and bearings. This preloading prevents the rotating knife
holder from moving away from the stationary knife when chopping material. A good way to
check for proper bearing preload is to spin the flywheel after it has been installed. The fly-
wheel should not rotate more than one full revolution before stopping.
Final knife gap should be .002”-.005”. If the knife gap still exceeds .002”-.005” after apply
approximately 220 lb-ft of torque to the front lock nut, loosen the rear lock nut slightly and repeat the
above steps.

5.2 – LOCKING NUT IN PLACE
For both the front and rear lock nuts, find the appropriate lock washer tab that will fit into one of the
slots of the lock nut. Bend the tab into the lock nut slot, thus locking the nut in place.
SECTION 6– INSTALLING THE INFEED GUIDE AND FLYWHEEL
Figure 6-1: Install the infeed material guide. Figure 6-2: Make sure it rests against the knife.
Figure 6-3: Support flywheel over the shaft. Figure 6-4: Install the QD hub into the flywheel.
6.1 – INSTALLING THE INFEED MATERIAL GUIDE
Insert the material guide so that it rests on the stationary knife. Make sure banding cannot fit under
the guide after tightening.

SECTION 6– (cont.)
Figure 6-5: Tap key into place. Figure 6-6: Make sure flywheel is next to lock nut.
6.2 – INSTALLING THE FL WHEEL
Support BB000502 FLYWHEEL in place over the flywheel shaft, as shown in Figure 6-3. Insert
BN000538 QD HUB into flywheel. Tap key into place, as shown in Figure 6-5. Before tightening the QD
hub to the flywheel, make sure the flywheel is against the rear lock nut. As the QD hub gets tightened,
it will pull the flywheel away from the lock-nut into position. Tighten the QD hub using in sequence to
348 in-lbs (2 lb-ft).
