You may retain them as they are or delete all of them and create
new extensions as per your choice.
However, before you add the extensions of your choice, go to
“Advanced – Options – General - Extension Preferences” and enter
the “User Extensions” with the start and end extension numbers.
If you want to have 3 digit and 4 digit extensions in your installation,
then you will need to do this in two steps. First enter the 3 digit range
of extension numbers here, add the extensions, then enter the 4
digit range of extension numbers and add these again.
While adding extensions using the “Batch Add” option, take care to
select either the 'Random' password option or give a default
password which will be applied to all extensions in this batch
addition.
The default extensions are created with a common password set to
“123456”.
6

Synx8160
Step 6 : Configuring Extensions
a) Connect the IP phones to the same network as the
Synx8160 and your PC. Check the IP address acquired
by the phone on its display.
b) Log in to the IP Phone using its user name and
password.
c) Configure the Server address as 192.168.1.2 (or the IP
Address assigned by you in Step 2).

Extension number and password in the phone's user
interface.
e) Click on “Submit” and wait for confirmation that the
phone has registered.
f) Verify in the Synx8160 that this extension is now
available for use. Available extensions will have a green
dot next to them in the “Operator” screen.
Step 7 : Configuring Trunks
1. Connect the FXO trunk lines from your PSTN network to
the FXO ports on the Synx8160.
2. Go to “Basic – FXO/GSM Trunks”, if no Trunks are
defined, click on “New FXO/GSM Trunk”, select the

Synx8160
trunk line, give it a name, usually the telephone number
of that trunk, so that you can identify this Trunk. Do for
all the Trunks.
3. If the Trunks are already pre-defined, you may click on
“Edit” button next to the FXO line to give it a name or
verify or modify any of the parameters.
4. The default parameters should work for most cases. If
required, modifications may be made later for advanced
options.
9

Synx8160
Step 8 : Define Outbound Routes
1. Pre-defined 'Dial Rules' are already programmed for
immediate use.
2. The “Outdial” Rule allows an external call to be made by
pressing 9 and then the number, where 9 is the external
dial access number.
3. The 911 and 9911 Rules are for ensuring that 911 calls
are dialed out correctly.
4. 'Edit' these rules to add or delete the Trunks which may
be used for making these calls.
5. Pre-defined 'Dial Plans' are already programmed for
immediate use.

12

Synx8160
These basic settings should be adequate for testing the installation.
If required, modifications may be made later for testing and using the
advanced options.
Step 10 : Configuring the EX16S Analog Gateways
The EX box EX16S is used to interface up to 16 regular Analog
telephone instruments as extensions to the Synx8160.
If the installation requires, say 80 analog extensions, then you will
need 5 EX16S boxes.
Connect all the required EX16S boxes to the same network as the
Synx8160, navigate to the “Advanced – EX Box Provisioning” option
13

Synx8160
in the left panel and click on the “Discover” button.
The Synx8160 searches the local network and displays all the EX
Box units discovered in the network.
The discovered EX Boxes will show as “Unconfigured” initially.
Click on the “Edit” button and you will see the extension
programming window pop up.
Select all the 16 ports or only the desired ones or you may define
each extension one by one.
To program all 16 extensions together, click on the check box next to
the “Port No.” - this will select all 16 ports – and then, click on the
“Fill Extn.” button.
Please ensure that there are enough extensions already defined in
the Synx8160 and available for assigning to this EX16S.
Select the starting extension in the small pop up box that appears,
click OK and then “Save” the selection.
You may give an appropriate name of your choice for this unit or
leave it with the “EX16S” that appears by default.
14

Synx8160
The “Status” will now change to show “Pending”.
Select this EX16S unit by clicking on the check box on the left of the
MAC Address and click on the “Activate Config” button.
After a few seconds, once the EX Box is configured, the status will
change to “Configured”.
You can now verify that the extensions are configured by going to
the “Basic – Extensions” option in the left panel. For the extensions
that were assigned to the EX Box, the 'Port' should now show 'EX'
for all these extensions.
15

Synx8160
Step 11 : Using the Network Bridge
The Synx8160 IP PBX system has a network bridge card built-in for
use in installations where the hotel's administration network and the
phone system networks are two isolated networks. Typically, the
PMS system is installed on a computer connected to the admin
network, whereas the phone system with the extensions are on a
different network.
The bridge supports dual channel communications between the two
network ports. Typically the PMS & Call Accounting applications run
on the office/admin network and the PMS/SMDR port of the Console
is also connected to the same network.
Default settings of the Network Bridge
The CONSOLE Port of the Network Bridge of the Synx8160 and the
WAN port of the Synx8160 MUST BE connected to the same
network switch or Router of the phone system network.
The PMS/SMDR port of the Network Bridge of the Synx8160 is
connected to the network switch or Router of the office/admin
system network.
The parameters shown in RED in the above table for the CONSOLE
port are fixed and may NOT not to be changed. The values in the
grayed out boxes do not matter as both Channels are working in the

'Server' mode of operation.
The PMS/SMDR port parameters will depend on the settings used
by the Computers in the office network.
Changing the Default IP Address of the Network Bridge
To change the default IP Address of either of the network ports of the
Bridge, set up your Laptop with a Static IP address which is in the
same IP Address range as the Bridge's network port and connect to
the Bridge directly.
Type the IP address of the Bridge in your browser and the “Settings”
are displayed on the screen.
Change the desired settings and press the 'Submit' button.
Note : Both the network ports of the Bridge are independent. To
change the default IP address of the other port, repeat the steps
above for the other port.
Now, click on the “Click here for PBX Port settings” link to open up
the port settings page. This will display as shown below.
17

Synx8160
Click on 'Port 1' or 'Port 2' to view or change the desired parameters.
Click on the “Submit” button to save the changes.
Note :
If the 'Connection Mode' is set to 'Client', then the 'Remote
Port' and 'Remote Server IP' need to be programmed. The
'Local Port' has no relevance in this case.
If the 'Connection Mode' is set to 'Server', then the 'Local
Port' needs to be programmed. The 'Remote Port' and
'Remote Server IP' have no relevance in this case.
Resetting the Network Bridge to its default values
To reset the settings of the Network Bridge to its default values,
press the RESET button for 5 seconds while the unit is powered up
and running.
The Bridge will restart and will revert to its default settings. The
operation or functioning of the Synx8160 will not be affected while
the Bridge is reset and restarts.
18

Synx8160
Step 12 : Installing the Console for Front Desk activities
The Console box is the main interface between the Front Desk in a
Hotel and the Synx8160 system.
Power up the Console unit and once the boot up procedure is
completed, you will see the main screen as shown below :
Click on the “Settings” option to program the unit with the desired
parameters.
You will be prompted to enter the “Password”. The default user
password is “123456”.
19

Synx8160
The “Settings” page appears as shown above.
Enter the name, address, phone number, number of rooms and
other details for the property where this system is installed.
The email address of the Admin or Supervisor or Owner is required
for sending the 911 alert emails.
Note : The “Dial Plan” names for the Allow 1/2/3/4 options must
be entered exactly as they have been set up in the Synx8160.
The default dial plan is “Allow 1” and all rooms are set to this on
Check Out. So, typically, the 'Allow 1' dial plan will not include
outward dialing access.
The “Network Settings” must be programmed properly and must
match the settings in the Network Bridge and the WAN / LAN ports
of the Synx8160.
The Console unit has a default IP Address of 192.168.1.3. This
default value may be changed to another Static IP address or the
unit may be set to acquire an IP Address via DHCP by entering the
details in the “Settings” page accordingly.
Note : If any changes are made to the IP Address or Port
numbers in the 'Settings' page, the unit MUST be restarted after
the changes have been submitted. Otherwise the changed
values will not take effect.
A typical connection diagram for the full set up is shown below :
