1Introduction
The TW5310 is an integrated GPS receiver/antennas designed for use in professional
grade applications such as vehicle tracking and timing applications.
It features the STMicroelectronics STA8058 Teseo™ WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS enabled
GPS receiver IC, a high performance low noise amplifier stage, a tight out-of-band SAW
filter to reject interference, and a perfectly tuned antenna element for maximum GPS
signal reception, even in dense urban-canyon environments where multipath
interference is prevalent.
Available with brick-wall filter option to eliminate possible interference from
Lightsquared transmissions.

The TW5310 is a through-hole mount GPS receiver/antenna housed in an industrial
grade weatherproof IP67 enclosure. It provides NMEA 0183 standard output at
RS232 levels.
Differential 1 pulse-per-second (1PPS) outputs are provided at RS422 levels. The
1PPS is synchronized to UTC.
A GPS position fix is obtained in less than 39 seconds from a cold start, and recovery
from temporary blockage of GPS signal is typically less than 1 second.
The last known position is periodically written to non-volatile memory to maintain
position information across power cycles.

2TW5X10 Evaluation
The TW5310 performance is easy to evaluate with the following software applications.
2.1 Open Source GPS Software Utility
The TW5310 is compatible with most third party applications that are capable of
decoding standard NMEA 0183 messages.
The following open source GPS utility can be used to display the NMEA output
sentences graphically.

2.2 Configurator
Tallysman provides a Windows based Configurator application (Part # 42-0004-0) to
configure the operating parameters of the TW5XXX. See section 7 for configuration
parameter details

The TW5310 cable is terminated in a RJ45 connector. The RJ45 connector can be cut off
if a custom connector interfaces is required.

Figure 4 shows the pin outs for an optional test cable (Part # 27-00045-0) terminated in
a DB9.

4TW5310 Connections
The TW5310 supports the following connections:
4.1 Power
The TW5310 operates at 12 volts. Overvoltage and transient protection make it suitable
for installation in the harshest of vehicle installations.
Connect the BROWN wire to Positive supply (12V or 5V depending on variant)
Connect the BROWN/WHITE wire to 0V
Note: Tallysman offers variants of the TW5310 which operate with 3.3v, 5V and Vbus (
USB version power.
4.2 NMEA output
See section 3 for wiring details
GPS position and timing information is output once per second in NMEA format. The
NMEA RX and TX outputs are at RS232 levels.
The default output from the TW5310 is 3 digit GGA and RMC messages at 4800 baud,
but can be configured to output 4 or 5 digit resolution.
The TW5310 can be configured to output the following NMEA sentences using the
Tallysman TW5XXX Configurator:
RMC - The RMC message is the recommended minimum data for GPS
GGA - The GGA message provides GPS Fix Information
VTG - The VTG message provides vector track and speed over ground
GSA - The GSA message provides overall satellite data
GSV - The GSV message provides detailed satellite data.
Note 1: When configuring additional output messages the baud rate must be increased
to ensure that there is enough time to output all messages sentences e.g. set to 57,600
baud

Note 2: If you are using the Visual GPS software utility to display TW5310 outputs, the
GSV message should be enabled to view satellite signal strengths.
4.3 1PPS
Differential 1PSS outputs at RS422 levels are provided. The 1PPS signal is synchronized
to UTC to within 100 nanoseconds. The rising edge of the 1PPS signal is synchronized to
the start of UTC time.

The default pulse width is 250 ms, but is configurable from 100 ms to 500 ms.
After having obtained a GPS fix, the 1PPS output will be accurately maintained even
when tracking only one satellite. Once synchronized the 1PPS maintains synchronization
accuracy with no GPS reception by fly-wheeling for a period, see “1PPS Finish delay” in
section 4.5.
Signal levels are differential, 0.V to 3.3V.
