About t is manual
Since we know people usually do not want to read manuals, we decided to make
this one different. The language used is simpler, and the manual is filled with bits
of humor. If you read the manual from start to finish, you will notice that, with
each step, you learn more than just that step. We hope you will enjoy!

Chapter One - Getting to know your TapMemo
TapMemo is all about oice, and how the power of oice, your oice, can help
you do more. TapMemo can recognize your oice, record it, and play it back.
TapMemo also has its own oice, which speaks back to you. All you ha e to do is
press one button, and you are on your way. Oh, there are two buttons for
olume, as well. Sorry!
TapMemo at a Glance
Take a brief look at what you can do with your TapMemo:
•Memo Pad - Any thought you ha e, or any idea, task, or a good story you
wish to remember can easily be recorded. Just name your memo and
record it. Then, later, just say that name; and TapMemo will play that
memo back whene er you want.
•P one Book - Store all your contacts (not all of them really, just your
important ones) in your TapMemo unit. To each of them, if you want, you
can add some more information like an address, etc. At any gi en
moment, TapMemo will be glad to look up a name for you, tell you that
person’s phone number, and, yes, e en dial that number for you on your
phone!

4
•Calendar - Got an important meeting, or better still, got a not-so-
important-meeting you know you will forget? - Load them all in! TapMemo
will gently remind you of your obligations when the time is right.
•Alarm Clock - TapMemo includes a progressi e wake-up mechanism that
will gracefully wake you up with a gradual olume increase.
•Lock - Protecting all of your personal information stored inside your
TapMemo unit is easy. Just say the locking command, and you are
protected. Unlocking the unit is done with a short pin code.
•Unit Locator - Forgot where you left your TapMemo? Ha e no fear.
Whistling will acti ate the unit and cause it to say, at a high olume, a
short phrase that will help you locate it. Still did not find it? Whistle again!
•Talking Clock - Date and Time telling is as easy as can be.
•Battery Meter - Hear TapMemo's opinion on the state of its battery.
•Memory Meter – TapMemo keeps track of, and will state at your
command, the remaining memory space.
Important t ings you s ould know before using TapMemo:
System Sounds:
TapMemo uses two different sounds to let you know the state it is in:
1. A "go" sound using one tone.
2. A "no go" sound using two tones.
Whene er you hear the "go" sound, it means that TapMemo is waiting for your
oice command. Whene er you hear the "no go" sound, it means TapMemo is
going back to bed and is not currently listening to any oice command.
W at can I say?
Whene er you hear the "go" sound, but you do not know what are your options,
simply ask "What can I say?" and TapMemo will gladly tell you the list of oice
commands it is currently expecting from you. During this time, you can press the
TapKey in order to stop the reading and ha e TapMemo listen to your command.
Volume buttons:
TapMemo has two olume buttons, minus and plus, marked - and + respecti ely.
These buttons can be used to decrease/increase the o erall olume of the unit at
any gi en moment. If you press one of them while TapMemo is sleeping,
TapMemo will wakeup, change the olume le el, and announce the change by
saying "down" for the minus button or "up" for the plus button. If you keep
pressing the olume buttons until you reach the lower or upper limit of olume,
then TapMemo will issue the “no go" sound and no further change in the olume
will occur.

5
If you press one of these buttons while TapMemo is busy doing something else,
like playing back a memo, the olume le el will change, but no erbal response
will be gi en.
Under the “entries playback” function of the phone book, memo pad and calendar,
the two olume buttons become “pre ious” and “next” buttons, enabling you to
scroll up and down among the entries. No change in the olume le el will occur
while in these functions.
T ree basic rules needed to ac ieve good voice recognition results:
•Background Noise - While using TapMemo, try to keep the background
noise as low as possible, especially when adding a new name, memo or
appointment. Trying to add a new entry while other people are loudly
talking in the same room will result in failure or simply a bad entry that
TapMemo will later ha e difficulty recognizing
•Speak Clearly - It is important that you speak clearly and as naturally as
possible when commanding TapMemo or when adding a new entry. Try not
to talk too soft or too loud.
•Differentiate Entries - Make new entries sound different from the ones
you ha e already added. Similar entries will be rejected by TapMemo. This
applies only to entries in the same set; so, for example, you can gi e the
exact same name to one memo and one appointment, but you must
differentiate between two memo names.
Working wit an Earp one:
Plugging an earphone into TapMemo will cause the internal speaker to be muted,
enabling you to maintain a certain amount of pri acy. Another ad antage of using
an earphone is that you sa e a lot of power since the speaker is the most power-
consuming part of TapMemo. We estimate that using an earphone will
triple the working time of TapMemo between charge cycles.
Chapter Two - Setting up your TapMemo
Now that you know WHAT can be done, let's describe HOW it can be done. The
first thing we recommend is that you set the clock. Are you ready? Here we go.
Clock Setting:
Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up from its beauty sleep and emit a
short tone. Say "system setup". TapMemo, being a good friend, will repeat your
command. You are now in the setup menu. Another short tone is heard.
Say "set clock" and follow the erbal instructions to set up the current date and
time. Note that the hour setting is based on a 24 hour clock. As any other well
educated de ice, TapMemo will thank you when you are done and read back the
current date and time.
Now that the clock is ticking, explore other commands under the setup menu.
Begin with battery power.

6
Battery Power Meter:
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Here is the abstract:
Press the TapKey button. After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
Then say "battery le el" and TapMemo will respond. Here is a nice table with all
possible responses and the actions you should take:
Important! Each time you press the TapKey button, TapMemo measures the
battery le el. A low le el battery will still enable you to continue, just with a
"battery is low" warning. If the battery le el is critically low, TapMemo will warn
you and then go back to sleep. This would be a good time to charge your tired
friend.
For charging instructions and general battery maintenance, look for the "Charging
your TapMemo" chapter close to the end of this manual.
Now that you know how to get a report on battery le el, it is time to learn how to
get a report on remaining memory.
Memory Meter:
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey.
After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
Now say "memory status" and TapMemo will complain about how much memory
is taken already. You should know that all applications on your TapMemo unit
share a common memory, so if, for example, you ha e recorded many long
memos, you may not be able to store many appointments in the calendar or
many names in the phonebook. Since we do care about you, we thought of the
following ideas to help you free memory space:
•Erase memos that you ha e recorded but do not remember why. Memos
take up the most memory, so each one you erase will be a small ictory
for you.
•Erase names of friends and family members who you do not like any more.
•As for appointments, TapMemo will erase them for you 24 hours after they
ha e passed. Isn't that nice?
Speaking of nice things, TapMemo can help you locate itself in case you forgot
where you left it. Here is how that is done:
Unit Locator:
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey.
After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
TapMemo says… You s ould… And…
Battery is 100% full Do nothing Smile
Battery is 70% full Do nothing Keep smiling
Battery is 40% full Think about charging Hmm…
Battery is low Charge when possible …
Battery le el critical - shutting down Charge, Charge, Charge Charge some more

7
Now say "unit locator" and TapMemo will ask you if you want to turn the unit
locator on. We think you do, so please say "yes". Once turned on, TapMemo will
wait for you to whistle, yes, you heard right, whistle. Each time it detects a
whistle, it will wakeup and announce "TapMemo, unit locator" in the loudest oice
it can, as if to say: Here I am!
If you want to turn this function off, just access the “unit locator” function as
before, and TapMemo will ask you if you want to turn the unit locator off. "Yes" is
the correct answer.
Intermission: How are you doing so far?
OK. There are two more items under the “system setup” menu. The first one
helps you get up on time in the morning, or at least tries to. You guessed right,
it’s the “alarm clock”
Alarm Clock:
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey.
After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
Say "set wake up time" and follow the erbal instructions to set the alarm clock
to your desired (or mandatory) wake up time. Note that the alarm clock is a daily
alarm clock so it will go off once e ery 24 hours unless you decide to turn it off
using the "wake up" command on the main menu. Don't worry, you can learn
how to do that later.
When the desired wake up time is reached, TapMemo will gently try to wake you
by playing a short melody and by saying the time. This will continue for one
minute with an increasing olume unless you press the TapKey button and go
back to bed.
Last but not least TapMemo offers a function that keeps all of your personal
information safe: the “lock” function.
Locking and Unlocking TapMemo:
The lock mechanism has three functions:
a. Setting the unlocking code
b. Locking your unit
c. Unlocking your unit
First, learn how to set your unlocking code (which you will use to unlock the unit).
The two other functions will be described later.
TapMemo arri es with a default unlocking code which is 555. How original. To set
your own personal unlocking code, do the following:
Access the “system setup” menu. Don't remember how? Just press the TapKey.
After the tone, say "system setup" and you are there!
Say "unlock code" and follow the erbal instructions to set your three-digit code.
Say your three-digit unlock code, one digit at a time, pausing after each digit
until you hear the single "go" tone before stating the next digit. We strongly

8
recommend that you write your code down somewhere in case you forget it,
and your unit is locked.
Congratulations! You ha e now co ered all functions in the “system setup” menu.
It is time to mo e on and to begin actually using the unit. Here we go.
Chapter Three - Using your TapMemo
Finding out t e current time:
Very easy. Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone.
Say "tell time", and TapMemo will say the current time. If you did not set the
clock yet, TapMemo will ask you to do that.
Finding out t e current date:
Much the same. Press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short
tone. Say "what is the date", and TapMemo will gi e you the current date. If you
did not set the clock yet, TapMemo will ask you to do that.
Turning t e Alarm Clock On/Off
Once you ha e set your wakeup time, you can ery easily turn your alarm On or
Off. To turn your alarm On and Off, do the following: Press the TapKey button.
TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "wake up mode" and follow the
erbal instructions to turn your alarm clock On or Off.
Locking/Unlocking your unit:
Remember that you learned how to set your unlocking code earlier? Here's the
second & third part where you learn how to lock and unlock your TapMemo.
To lock your TapMemo, press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and emit
a short tone. Say "lock unit" and TapMemo will ask you to confirm your intention.
If you are serious, say "yes" and TapMemo will lock the unit while reminding you
of your code. If you did not set your code yet, TapMemo will use the default 555
code. Once locked, the unit will not respond when pressing the Volume Up/Down
buttons. From now on, your unit is locked, and all of your personal information is
safe.
To unlock your TapMemo, press the TapKey button. TapMemo will wake up and
ask you for the unlock code. Say your three-digit unlock code, digit by digit. If
you said the correct code, TapMemo will unlock the unit. If you do not, try again
since there is no limit to the number of attempts permitted.
Using t e P one book
TapMemo's phone book can hold up to 60 names. Each name can be associated

Adding a name:
To add a new name to the phone book, do the following: Press the TapKey
button. TapMemo will wake up and emit a short tone. Say "phone book".
TapMemo will repeat your command. You are now in the phone book menu. When
another short tone is heard, say "add new". TapMemo will ask you for the name
to add and will then ask you to repeat it. Then, TapMemo will ask you for the
phone number itself. Say the phone number, digit by digit. After each digit you
say, TapMemo will try to recognize that digit and say it back to you. If you hear
that TapMemo recognized a wrong digit, press the olume up or down button to
delete that digit. When you are done entering the phone number, say nothing or
press the TapKey. TapMemo will read back the entire number and will ask you to
confirm it. Now, you can add a short message with the address or any other
information you wish. If you do not wish to record any data, or to stop recording,
press the TapKey. TapMemo will thank you and store the name, number and
recording. Now, Another name adding cycle will start automatically. If you do not
wish to add another name, press the TapKey after the prompt "please say a name
to add" is heard.
Please note that if TapMemo does not recognize a digit you say, it will ask "what
did you say?" and you will be able to say the digit again. If the unit will fail to
recognize a digit 4 times successively, it will ask you to manually enter it using the
TapKey button. Once you do, TapMemo will go back to the normal voice recognition mode.

Chapter Four - Charging your TapMemo
First, some terms you should know: “Battery life” means the time your TapMemo
will run before it must be recharged (sometimes this is also called “play time” or
“run time”). “Battery lifespan” means the total amount of time your battery will
last before it must be replaced.
Since TapMemo's battery is lithium-ion based, it has no memory effect which
means you can charge it at any time, without the need to discharge it fully first.
If TapMemo warns you that it has a low le el battery or if you feel like charging
the battery anyway, simply plug the supplied power adaptor into the wall outlet
and plug the small power plug into TapMemo. As soon as you make these
connections, TapMemo will say "charging battery" only once, and the charge cycle
will begin. You can unplug the power plug from TapMemo at any time. A full
charge takes about 4 hours. When it is fully charged, TapMemo will say "charge
complete" once a minute until you disconnect the plug.
Rechargeable batteries ha e a limited number of charge cycles and may
e entually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles ary by
use and settings. Read below for more information:
Paying attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer
battery lifespan and battery life for your TapMemo. The most important thing is
to keep your TapMemo out of the sun or a hot car (e en the glo e compartment).
Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most. Lowering the speaker
olume or better yet, using an earphone, will prolong the time needed between
charges.
If you do not use TapMemo for a long time, be sure to charge it once e ery 2
months or so. This will keep your TapMemo's battery healthy and happy.
TapMemo Temperate Zone. Your TapMemo works best from 32°to 95°F. That’s 0°to 35°C. Keeping your TapMemo
as near room temperature as possible (22°C) is ideal. You should store it in environments of -4°to 113°.

Chapter Five - Frequently Asked Questions
Following is a list of questions we thought you will want answers for. Here they
are:
Question: Can you please show me the entire map of oice commands?
Answer: Yes, here it is:
Question: When I press the TapKey, I do not hear anything. What can be wrong?
Answer: Most chances are that the battery power is ery ery low. When this
happens, TapMemo shuts down all applications and will only wait for you to
charge it. If charging the unit does not help, please contact us for Ser ice.
Question: When working with the unit, I noticed that the olume le el cannot
reach the le els it did when the battery was fully charged. Is that Normal?
Answer: Yes. TapMemo has a built in mechanism that will reduce the maximum
olume le el allowed when it notices that the battery is running low. This is done
in order to prolong the battery life by reducing the power sent to the speaker.
Simply charge the unit.
Question: I accidentally pressed the TapKey button for more then a second and
TapMemo got into the memo adding command. What is going on?
Answer: This 'shortcut' is intentional and was built in so you can start recording
a memo quickly.
Question: What happens if I lock the unit and forget the unlocking code?

15
Answer: Here you ha e two options: The first is to send the unit for ser ice. We
will unlock it for you and send it back. The second option is for you to perform a
hard reset which will unlock the unit but will also clear the entire memory (phone
book, memo pad and calendar) and will set the unit back to the factory setting.
To hard reset your unit do the following: Press and hold the TapKey. While
holding, insert a pin or a metal clip into the reset aperture at the back of the unit
and press shortly. Release the TapKey. TapMemo will state its code ersion. The
unit is now unlocked.
Question: I ha e trained around 30 names into my phone book, and TapMemo
now says "phone book is full" when trying to train the next name. I thought the
phone book can contain 60 names. What is going on?
Answer: Your TapMemo memory is full. The number of entries, of all types, that
TapMemo can hold aries with their combined length. You can free space most
effecti ely by clearing any memos that you no longer need. They will generally
be the longest entries
Chapter Six - Safety and Handling
This chapter contains important safety and handling information for TapMemo.
Read all safety information below before using TapMemo to avoid injury.
Keep this users manual for your TapMemo handy for future reference.
Important Safety Information
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in fire, electric
shock, or other injury or damage.
Handling TapMemo:
Do not bend, drop, crush, puncture, incinerate, or open TapMemo.
Avoiding water and wet locations:
Do not use TapMemo in rain or near washbasins, or other wet locations. Take
care not to spill any food or liquid into TapMemo. In case TapMemo gets wet,
unplug all cables before cleaning, and allow it to dry thoroughly before using it
again.
Repairing TapMemo:
Ne er attempt to repair TapMemo yourself. TapMemo does not contain any user-
ser iceable parts. For ser ice information, go to www.tapmemo.com/support. The
battery in TapMemo is not user-replaceable.
Avoiding earing damage:
Permanent hearing loss may occur if earphones are used at high olume. Set the
olume to a safe le el. You can adapt o er time to a higher olume of sound that
may sound normal but can be damaging to your hearing. If you experience
ringing in your ears or muffled speech, stop listening and ha e your hearing
checked. The louder the olume, the less time is required before your hearing
could be affected. Hearing experts suggest that to protect your hearing:
•Limit the amount of time you use earphones or headphones at high
olume.
•A oid turning up the olume to block out noisy surroundings.

16
•Turn the olume down if you can’t hear people speaking near you.
Using eadp ones safely:
Use of headphones while operating a ehicle is not recommended and is illegal in
some areas. Be careful and attenti e while dri ing. Stop using TapMemo if you
find it disrupti e or distracting while performing any acti ity that requires your
