USING INDI DVD’S REAR PANEL AUDIO OUTPUTS
Indi DVD has a stereo (L/R) analog audio output, located on the drive’s rear panel. Using an RCA type
audio cable, Indi DVD can be connected directly to a mini-system or stereo receiver for audio
playback. By default, Indi DVD will play audio digitally through the included Digital MixMaster (PC)
software. If you wish to play audio digitally through Digital MixMaster, no adjustments are required.
To enable Digital MixMaster playback through Indi DVD’s rear panel (analog) audio outputs
(Windows only):
1. Using an RCA type audio cable, connect Indi DVD’s rear panel audio outputs (L/R) to the inputs on
an amplification device such as a stereo receiver or mini-system.
2. In the Windows Device Manager, right click on TDK DVDRW0404N and select PROPERTIES.
3. Select the PROPERTIES tab and un-check ENABLE DIGITAL CD AUDIO FOR THIS CDROM DEVICE.
4. Start Digital MixMaster and click the TOOLS button.
5. Select INPUT DEVICES\CDA FILES and click the CONFIGURE button.
6. Check USE ANALOG PLAYBACK FOR CDA FILES.
7. Close Digital MixMaster and restart the system.
• When using Digital MixMaster, audio playback will now occur through Indi DVD’s rear panel audio
outputs.

6indiDVD ReWriter : Hardware Manual SECTION 2 : Troubleshooting & Maintenance 7
IF INDI DVD DOES NOT FUNCTION:
• Connecting Indi DVD to a USB 1.1 port will result in slow performance and may cause disc
recording errors. Connect Indi DVD to a USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394/FireWire port for best performance.
• Verify that Indi DVD is connected to a functioning power outlet.
• If Indi DVD is connected to a PC’s USB 2.0 port, verify that the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PC driver is
properly installed.
IF INDI DVD WILL NOT RECORD PROPERLY:
• Verify that Indi DVD supports the recordable media format to which you’re attempting to record.
• Verify that the recordable media you’re using is rated to record at the desired speed.
• Verify that the recordable media is inserted into Indi DVD with the correct orientation. (Media
should be placed label side up in the disc tray.)
• Since low quality media may not record properly, it’s best to use TDK discs.
• Verify that the drive is not connected to a USB 1.1 port. Indi DVD is not USB 1.1 port compatible,
due to bandwidth limitations.
• A buffer underrun may have occurred. Either select a slower recording speed or select using Buffer
Underrun Protection in your software. Inadequate system RAM can sometimes cause buffer
underrun errors.
• Disable all other functions and applications that could interrupt the stream of information.
• Make sure that the media does not have any fingerprints, dirt or scratches on the surface.
• Check to see if the disc already has data written on it. If the disc is rewritable, you can erase and
re-record it.
• Use the recording software supplied with Indi DVD. Some other software may not be supported.
• The included software does not enable making copies of commercial DVD movie discs, such as
those rented from your local video store. Always respect intellectual property laws.

SECTION 3 : Frequently Asked Questions 9
8Indi DVD ReWRITER : Hardware Guide
IF INDI DVD CAN’T CREATE A MULTI-SESSION DISC:
• There may not be enough space left on the disc, including the lead in and lead out for each
session.
• Make sure that the disc wasn't previously finalized. If the disc was finalized, additional recording
on the disc will not be possible.
IF INDI DVD CAN’T READ A DISC AFTER A SUCCESSFUL BURN:
• See if another compatible drive can read the disc. If the disc can’t be read, the directory
information may be corrupt.
• When setting up a recording session, select “Finalize” in the recording software. If the disc isn’t
finalized, that may be the problem.
IF A DISC WILL NOT EJECT FROM INDI DVD:
• Shut down the computer, power Indi DVD OFF, power Indi DVD back ON and press its EJECT button.
If that doesn’t work, carefully insert a straightened paperclip into Indi DVD’s emergency eject hole,
located on the drive’s front panel.
IF YOU CAN’T SUCCESSFULLY VIEW DVD VIDEOS:
• Your computer’s system specifications may be a major factor. If your video card is outdated or
low-end, it could be the problem. Inadequate system RAM is another likely culprit.
• Verify that DVD playback software is installed on your computer.
• Refer to the Indi DVD product packaging or to www.tdk.com for recommended system specifications
for optimal performance.
IF YOUR COMPUTER PERFORMS POORLY WHEN EDITING VIDEO:
• Your computer’s system specifications may be a major factor. Video editing is processor and RAM
intensive. Other factors, such as your video card may contribute to the problem.
• Refer to the Indi DVD product packaging or to www.tdk.com for recommended system specifications
for optimal performance.
IF VIDEO RENDERING TAKES A LONG TIME:
• Even on high-end computer systems, video rendering is a time consuming process. Upgrading your
computer may shorten rendering times, but there isn’t a magic fix.
IF INDI DVD IS CONNECTED TO A FIREWIRE PORT, BUT DOESN’T APPEAR ON THE
MAC DESKTOP (MAC USERS ONLY):
• The MacOS does not mount drives on the desktop; it only mounts volumes (discs). Try putting a
disc with something on it into the drive and see if it shows up on the desktop.
• If a disc does not show up on the desktop, verify that there are no more than 63 devices plugged in
with no more than 16 hops between any two devices.
If you have problems during or right after installation of your Indi DVD drive, use these tips to help find the problem.
What media should I use for my Indi DVD?
See the included specifications sheet or visit www.tdk.com/INDIsupport for more information.
When should I record to DVD media?
Recordable DVD discs have much higher capacity than CD-R/RW discs. This makes recordable DVD discs ideal for
recording video and large multimedia files and for backing up your hard drive.
Why can’t I do disc-to-disc copying?
Some possible reasons are:
•Some CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives will not allow direct copying to Indi DVD, or are not capable of digital audio extraction.
•You must use either a SCSI-2 drive or a supported ATAPI drive as the source.
•Some discs have copy protection or other features that prevent disc-to-disc copying.
•You cannot copy commercial DVD discs or copy protected CD discs.
Why am I getting buffer underrun errors?
If available, your recording software’s buffer underrun write assurance option should be activated. Buffer underrun
errors can occur if another application interrupts the writing process, or if the recording drive’s write speed is set too high
for the speed at which the source drive can supply data. Lack of computer memory can also cause underrun errors.
How can I optimize the recording process?
•Make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements.
•Do not run other applications while recording discs. Log off any networks, disable any FAX modems, email, screen savers,
or other programs that may send messages to your computer while it is writing a disc.
•If your computer has a power management feature, disable it.
•Run ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter periodically on your hard drive.
•Do not record using data from a compressed hard drive. Buffer underruns may be caused by hard drive compression software.
What is the best way to label a disc that I just burned?
•With a CD/DVD labeling marker. The marker must be soft-tipped and either alcohol or water based.
Markers of other types will ruin the disc.
•Another way is to use a good quality label maker, such as TDK’s CD/DVD Labeling System.
