About Trans-It
Trans-It provides a simple and secure way of storing your files. The plug-and-play device provides maximum speed data
transfer if connected to a USB 2.0 port, but is also compatible with USB 1.1 ports. You can drag and drop files to and from
Trans-It just as you would with a hard drive.
About U3
Trans-It has U3 smart drive functionality, which allows storing U3 software programs on the drive. You can run U3
programs that are stored on Trans-It at any PC without installing them on the PC. Trans-It comes pre-loaded with certain
U3 applications and you can add others to the drive. The U3 functionality is only compatible with Windows.
This user's guide does not cover Trans-It's U3 functionality. For details on how to use Trans-It's U3 functionality, please
download the U3 Quick Start Guide from www.tdk.com/usbsupport.
1 Gigabyte = 1 Billion Bytes
Some of the listed capacity is used for formatting and other functions, and thus is not available for data storage.
System Requirements
Windows 98SE, 2000 ME, XP; Mac OS 9.0 or higher
USB 2.0 port required for high speed transfer
U3 requires Windows XP, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and later or Windows Server 2003

Using Trans-It
Microsoft Windows
WINDOWS 98SE NOTE: Trans-It is fully plug-and-play. You do not need to install any drivers unless your operating system
is Windows 98SE. If your operating system is Windows 98SE, please visit www.tdk.com/usbsupport to download the
required driver. Download and install the driver before connecting Trans-It to your PC.
To connect Trans-It:
1. Insert Trans-It into an available USB port on your computer and wait while it is initialized.
• If your operating system is Windows XP, initialization messages may appear followed by a confirmation message that
your new hardware is installed.
• If your operating system is Windows ME or Windows 2000, your computer will simply return to your desktop.
• A U3 welcome screen may appear, and a U3 icon may appear in your Windows system tray. For more information on
using Trans-It's U3 functionality, please read the U3 Quick Start Guide, available at www.tdk.com/usbsupport.
2. If your operating system is Windows XP, your Trans-It drive folder will appear in a separate window. If this does not
happen or if you are not prompted to select a function, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and
then double click on the TDK TransIt icon in the My Computer window to access your Trans-It.
3. You can now save, copy and delete files on Trans-It in the same manner you would with a hard drive. Trans-It's LED will
illuminate when data transfer is active.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not remove Trans-It from the USB port without following the proper procedure. Removing the drive improperly may corrupt the
data stored on the drive and the data being transferred. You may also loose access to your drive and may not be able to retrieve any files stored on the
drive.
To remove Trans-It (not required with Windows 98SE):
1. Double click on the green Safely Remove Hardware arrow in the Windows task bar.
2

2. In the Safely Remove Hardware box, highlight USB Mass Storage Device and then click Stop.
3. In the Stop a Hardware device window, select TDK Trans-It USB Device and click OK.
4. Wait for the notice that it is safe to remove the drive and then remove Trans-It.
NOTE: Instead of following the procedure above, it is also safe to click the U3 Launchpad's Eject button and then remove Trans-It. See the U3 Quick Start
Guide for more details.
NOTE: If your operating system is Windows 98SE, you don't need to follow this procedure. You can safely remove Trans-It without taking any special
steps, so long as the device is not actively transferring data. The device's LED will illuminate when it is transferring data.
Apple Macintosh

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use Trans-It after connecting it to my computer?
After Trans-It has been connected to your computer's USB port, the operating system will recognize and initialize it. In
Windows, click My Computer or Windows Explorer and then Trans-It will appear as an additional drive. Mac users will find
the icon on the desktop. You can use Trans-It exactly like a hard drive.
My computer doesn't have USB 2.0. Can I use Trans-It with USB 1.1?
Yes, the drive is backwards compatible with your computer's USB 1.1 port.
Can I use a USB 1.1 extension cable with Trans-It?
Yes, USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 cables are the same.
With what operating systems is Trans-It compatible?
Trans-It was designed for compatibility with Windows 98SE, 2000 ME, XP and Mac OS 9.0 or higher.
Trans-It is connected, but I don't see a drive letter or an icon in My Computer or Windows Explorer for the drive.
How can I correct this?
First, make sure the drive is fully inserted into the USB port.
If that doesn't help, try pressing F5 to refresh My Computer and Windows Explorer.
If you have other drives installed on the system, Windows may try to install Trans-It as the same drive letter. Here is the fix:
1. Open Control Panel.
2. Click on Administrative Tools.
3. Click on Computer Management.
4. Click on Disk Management.
5. Trans-It will appear in the listing.
6. Right click on Trans-It and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
7. Click Change.
8. From the pulldown box, select an available drive letter.
9. Click OK and then Yes to verify your selection.
10. Close Computer Management and Control Panel.
The drive should now appear correctly in Windows Explorer and My Computer.
Do I need to format Trans-It before using it?
No, Trans-It is ready to use out of the box.
With Macs, a formatting message may appear if your computer has not been set up to read Windows-formatted files. Refer
to the computer's user's guide to learn how to enable reading Windows files with it.
If you format Trans-It with NTFS, the drive will have less available storage space than if you don't format it.
I can't find the files I stored on Trans-It. Where are they?
If data transfer was interrupted by removing the drive from your PC without following the correct procedure or by power
failure, the files may have been corrupted. Restart your computer and attempt to access the files. If this is unsuccessful,
you can try using recovery software. TDK does not supply, support or endorse recovery software. The software may or may
not be successful in recovering your files. If the files are unrecoverable, you will need to reformat your drive as outlined
below.
WARNING: Reformatting permanently erases all data on your drive.
Windows XP:
1. Close all open applications including anti-virus software.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
3. Right click on Trans-It.
4. Select Format from the drop-down menu that appears.
5. Click on Start then click OK in the warning screen. A Format Complete notice will appear after a few seconds. You can
now use the drive normally.
4

Mac OS:
1. Close all open applications including anti-virus software.
2. Go to your hard drive icon.
3. Open Applications.
4. Find and open Utilities.
5. Double click on Disk Utilities.
6. In the upper left window highlight “ … TDK Trans-It … ”
7. Select Volume Format and name the volume.
8. Click on Erase in the tool bar at the top of the window.
Can I password protect my Trans-It?
Your Trans-It may have been supplied with a pre-installed password security utility.
I lost the password for my Trans-It. What can I do?
You will need to re-format the drive. All files stored on the drive will be lost.
Why don't files transfer to/from my Trans-It faster?
Your computer's USB ports may be USB 1.1 rather than USB 2.0. Maximum transfer rates are only possible when your
Trans-It is connected to a USB 2.0 port. USB 2.0 ports are approximately 10 times faster than USB 1.1 ports.
Can Trans-It be affected by a virus?
If you save a virus-infected file on Trans-It, the drive can be infected. The virus-infected file could then infect other
computers you use with the drive. To avoid this issue, regularly scan your PC with anti-virus software. Some Trans-It drives
may be supplied with integrated anti-virus software that you can also use for protection.
Can I use Trans-It with a non-powered USB hub or the USB port on my Mac keyboard?
No, Trans-It, like other USB flash drives, requires more power than those devices would be capable of supplying. Use
Trans-It with an internal USB port or powered hub that supplies 500mA.
