4) Remove the tapes from the top cover and pinch roller release lever.
5) Cut the band to separate the printer from the bottom pad.
6) Open the top cover, and remove the tapes from the ribbon shaft holder plate and ribbon shaft.
7) Install the printer after reading the following precautions.
(1) This printer does not include a label holder or label supply unit. Back tension to the label must
be around 300g, as excessive back tension may affect the label feed accuracy.
(2) Also this printer does not include a label’s backing paper take up unit. Backing paper take up
torque must be around 200g, as excessive torque may affect the label feed accuracy.
1.2 CHECKS
1) Check for damage or scratches on the machine.
2) Confirm that none of the accessories are missing.

1.3 PRECAUTION FOR INSTALLATION
1- 3
1.3 PRECAUTION FOR INSTALLATION
The printer with the serial number of 3Txxxxxx or later is provided with a battery for the real time clock.
However, when the printer is delivered, this battery has not been connected to the CPU PC board.
Therefore, it is necessary to connect the battery harness to the CPU PC board to enable the real time
clock function.
1) Remove the side cover from the printer. (Refer to Section 2.2.)
2) Remove the protection tape from the battery harness connector.
3) Connect the battery harness, secured with the cable band together with the I/O harness, to CN8
on the CPU PC board.
4) Write down the starting date of the lithium battery use on the battery sticker for the indication of
replacement.
5) After connection, return the side cover to the printer.
6) Refer to Section 6.4 and perform a self-diagnostic test. Confirm that the “Battery” on the
diagnostic test print is “OK”.
7) Refer to Section 6.13 and set the real time clock function.
NOTES: 1. The life of the lithium battery in this machine is about 2 years.
2. While the printer is turned on, the lithium battery power is not consumed.
3. Regarding the lithium battery replacement procedure, please refer to the Maintenance
Manual, Section 2.19.

2. MAJOR UNIT REPLACEMENT EO18-33011
2.1 LUBRICATION
2- 1
2. MAJOR UNIT REPLACEMENT
In this document all procedures for the major unit replacement are explained using the B-492L type.
The B-492L type and the B-492R type are symmetrically designed, however, the orientation or location
of some parts are different. Care must be taken not to reassemble the printer incorrectly. Failure to do
this may cause a printer failure.
Also, take care not to pinch the harnesses with the covers when reassembling.
2.1 LUBRICATION
All machines are generally delivered in their best condition. Efforts should be made to keep them that
way. Lack of oil, or the presence of debris or dust, may cause an unexpected failure. To maintain in
optional operating condition, periodically clean the machine and apply the proper kind of oil to each
part in which lubrication is needed.
Although the frequency of lubrication varies according to how often the machine is used, as a minimum
it is necessary to lubricate before any part becomes dry. It is also necessary to wipe off excessive oil
or it will collect dirt.
WARNING!
Prior to major unit replacement, turn OFF the power of the Power Supply Unit and disconnect the
AC Power Cord. Then, disconnect the DC Power Cord from the printer.
CAUTION!
1. Lubrication: Should be performed during parts replacement
2. Type of lubricant: FLOIL G-488: 1 Kg can. (Parts No. 19454906001)
3. Do not spray the inside of the printer with lubricants. Unsuitable oil can damage the mechanisms.
CAUTION!
1. Never remove the mounting plate from the ribbon motor (Feed). Doing so will change its
adjustment. (See Section 2.8.)
2. Never remove the four screws painted red on the side of the print block. Doing so will change
their adjustment.
Side view of the print block
NEVER remove these screws.

2.2 REMOVING THE SIDE COVER AND OPENING THE TOP COVER
This section describes how to remove the side cover and open the top cover, which is necessary
before performing any parts replacement.
1) Remove the two D-3x5 screws and eight B-3x6 screws to release the side cover.
2) Disconnect the harness of the fan motor attached to the side cover from CN2 on the I/O PC board
(for the R type, disconnect from CN4). Then remove the side cover from the printer.
3) Open the top cover.
4) Turn the head lever and pinch roller lever counterclockwise to open the print head and pinch roller.
Then open the ribbon shaft holder plate.
5) After completing the parts replacement, attach the side cover and close the top cover in reverse
order of disassembly.

Move the solenoid attachment plate while measuring a clearance between the print head and the
platen with a scale so as not to touch the print head with it. Secure the solenoid ass’y where the
clearance between the print head and the platen is 0.5 to 1.0 mm and distances A and B are equal.
Moving the solenoid ass’y in the direction of black arrow causes the print head position higher. Moving
the solenoid ass’y in the direction of white arrow causes the print head position lower.

2.4 REPLACING THE PRINT HEAD
1) Open the top cover. Turn the head lever and pinch roller lever counterclockwise to open the print
head and pinch roller. Then, open the ribbon shaft holder plate. (Refer to Section 2.2.)
2) Turn the head lever clockwise to lower the print head. Remove the two SM-4x8 screws through
the holes in the print block.
3) Turn the head lever counterclockwise and disconnect the two harnesses to detach the print head
from the print block.
4) Replace the print head with a new one, and connect the harnesses.
5) Turn the head lever clockwise and secure the print head with the screws through the holes.
6) After completing the reassembly, perform a print test to check the print quality.
(Refer to Section 6.7.) If the print quality is poor or the ribbon wrinkles, fine adjust the print head
position by loosening the SM-4x8 and SM-3x6 screws, and then perform a print test again.
