Caution for AC Mains Lead
(For United Kingdom)

For your safety, please read the following text care¬
fully.
This appliance is supplied with a moulded three pin
mains plug for your safety and convenience.
A 5-ampere fuse is fitted in this plug.
Should the fuse need to be replaced please ensure
that the replacement fuse has a rating of 5-ampere
and that it is approved by ASTA or BSI to BS1362.
Check for the ASTA mark <$> or the BSI mark ^ on
the body of the fuse.
If the plug contains a removable fuse cover you must
ensure that it is refitted when the fuse is replaced.
If you lose the fuse cover the plug must not be used
until a replacement cover is obtained.
A replacement fuse cover can be purchased from
your local dealer.
CAUTION!
IF THE FITTED MOULDED PLUG IS UN¬
SUITABLE FOR THE SOCKET OUTLET IN
YOUR HOME THEN THE FUSE SHOULD BE
REMOVED AND THE PLUG CUT OFF AND
DISPOSED OF SAFELY.
THERE IS A DANGER OF SEVERE ELEC¬
TRICAL SHOCK IF THE CUT OFF PLUG IS
INSERTED INTO ANY 13-AMPERE SOCKET.
If a new plug is to be fitted please observe the wiring
code as shown below.
If in any doubt please consult a qualified electrician.
IMPORTANT
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accor¬
dance with the following code:
Blue: Neutral
Brown: Live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this
appliance may not correspond with the coloured
markings identifying the terminals in your plug, pro¬
ceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured BLUE must be connected
to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the
letter N or coloured BLACK.
The wire which is coloured BROWN must be con¬
nected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with
the letter L or coloured RED.
Under no circumstances should either of these wires
be connected to the earth terminal of the three pin
plug, marked with the letter E or the Earth Symbol
Before use
Remove the connector cover as follows.
How to replace the fuse
1. Remove the fuse cover with a screwdriver.

Suggestions for Safety
■ Use a standard AC wall outlet
1. Use from an AC power source of high voltage, such as that
used for an air conditioner, is very dangerous.
A fire might be caused by such a connection.
2. A DC power source cannot be used.
Be sure to check the power source carefully, especially on a
ship or other place where DC is used.
■ Grasp the plug when disconnecting the power
supply cord
1, Wet hands are dangerous.
A dangerous electric shock may result if the plug is touched by
wet hands.
2. Never place heavy items on top of the power supply cord,
nor force It to bend sharply.
■ Place the unit where it will be well ventilated
Place this unit at least 10 cm (4") away from wall surfaces, etc.
■ Avoid places such as the following:
In direct sunlight or in other places where the temperature la
high.
In places where there is excessive vibration or humidity.
Such conditions might damage the cabinet and/or other component
parts and thereby shorten the unit's service life.
■ Be sure to place the unit on a fiat, level surface
If the surface is inclined, a malfunction may result.
■ Never attempt to repair nor reconstruct this
unit
A serious electric shock might occur if this unit is repaired, dis¬
assembled or reconstructed by unauthorized persons, or if the
internal parts are accidentally touched.
■ Take particular care if children are present
Never permit children to put anything, especially metal, inside this
unit. A serious electric shock or malfunction could occur if articles
such as coins, needles, screwdrivers, etc. are inserted through the
ventilation holes, etc. of this unit.
■ If water is spilled on the unit
Be extremely careful if water is spilled on the unit, because a fire or
serious electric shock might occur. Immediately disconnect the
power cord plug, and consult with your dealer.
■ Avoid spray-type insecticides
Insecticides might cause cracks or "cloudiness" in the cabinet and
plastic parts of this unit. The gas used in such sprays might,
moreover, be ignited suddenly.
■ Never use alcohol or paint thinner
These and similar chemicals should never be used, because they
might cause flaking or cloudiness of the cabinet finish.
■ Disconnect the power supply cord if the unit
will not be used for a long time
If the unit is left for a long time with the power ON, this not only will
shorten its useful operation life, but also may cause other trouble.
■ If trouble occurs
If, during operation, the sound is interrupted or indicators no longer
illuminate, or if an abnormal odour or smoke is detected, imme¬
diately disconnect the power cord plug, and contact with your
dealer or an Authorized Service Center.

Installation
Notes of placement
■ This unit is a precision instrument. Be sure to place it on a
flat surface.
■ Avoid places such as the following:
•Near any equipment or device that generates strong magnetism.
•On any heat-generating equipment or device, or in any place
where the temperature is high (35 C C or higher).
• Extremely cold place (5°C or below).
• Near a tuner or TV. (It may cause noise in the broadcast, or
disturbance of the TV picture.)
■ When carrying or storing the unit, handle it with care so it is
not subjected to any strong bumps.
Always remove the disc before storing the unit for any period of
time.
■ To avoid problems due to vibration.
• Do not place a book or similar object under this unit.
• Do not route the connection cables (of this or other units) across
the operation panel, across the top, or under the unit.
About moisture
Moisture may form on the lens in the following cases...
• Immediately after a heater has been turned on.
• In a steamy or very humid room.
•When the unit is suddenly moved from a cold environment to a
warm one.
If moisture forms inside this unit, it may not work properly. In this
case, turn on the power and wait about one hour for the moisture to
evaporate.

1 Connect the stereo connection cable (in¬
cluded) to the “CD” or “AUX” terminals of the
amplifier.
When using the synchro edit function, be sure to connect the
stereo connection cable to the amplifier even if the optical-fiber
cable has been connected. (See pages 22-25.)
2 Connect the synchro edit cable (included with
the cassette deck) to the “SYNCHRO EDIT”
terminal of the Technics cassette deck.
3 Connect the optical-fiber cable (not included)
to the “DIGITAL INPUT” terminal of the ampli¬
fier.

For areas except Europe, Australia and New Zealand
Set the voltage selector (VOLT ADJ) to the
voltage setting for the area in which the unit will
be used.
•Use a minus (-) screwdriver.
•Note that this unit will be seriously damaged If this setting is not
made correctly.
• If the power supply in your area is 117 V or 120 V, set to the
"127 V" position.
4 Connect the AC power supply cord (included)
to the “AC OUTLET” of the amplifier or the
household AC outlet.
This terminal can be used for connection with other equipment
ttiat has a digital input terminal, such as an amplifier, by using
an optical-fiber cable. A dust-protection cap is inserted in this
terminal. Remove this cap only when a connection is to be
made to this terminal.
For areas except Europe, Australia and New Zealand
If the power plug will not fit your socket, use the power plug
adaptor (included).
For areas except Australia and New Zealand
Insertion of Connector
Even when the connector is per¬
fectly inserted, depending on the
type of inlet used, the front part of
the connector may jut out as
shown in the drawing.
However there is no problem
using the unit.

Concerning the Remote Control
Battery installation
1 Open the cover.
Press gently and slide the cover out.
2 Insert the batteries included with this unit.
•When you need to replace these batteries, use two UM-4
"AAA”, IEC R03 (1.5 V) or equivalent batteries.
•Be sure to insert batteries so that their positive (+) and
negative (-) polarities match the indications in the compart¬
ment. Batteries installed incorrectly may leak and cause
damage.
•Refer to "Use of batteries” below for additional information.

Use of batteries
• Do not mix old and new batteries or batteries of different types
(carbon and alkaline, etc.).
•The average battery life is about one year. Although the battery
life varies depending on how often the device is used, you should
generally replace the batteries about once a year.
• Replace the batteries if commands from the remote control trans¬
mitter do not operate the unit even when the transmitter is held
close to the front panel.
• Never subject batteries to excessive heat or flame; do not attempt
to disassemble them; and be sure they are not short-circuited.
• If you will not be using the remote control for a long period of time,
remove the batteries and store in a cool, dark place.
• If a battery leaks, remove all batteries and dispose of them prop¬
erly. Thoroughly clean the battery compartment before inserting
new batteries.
• If the leaking electrolyte comes in contact with skin or clothes,
flush with water immediately.
• Keep batteries out of reach of children.
• Do not use rechargeable-type (nickel-cadmium) batteries.
•Do not attempt to recharge alkaline or carbon batteries.
•Always remove old, weak, or worn-out batteries and dispose of
them properly.
•Do not dispose of used batteries in household rubbish.
Operation notes
Aim the remote control’s transmission window toward the CD
player's sensor. Avoid any obstacles.
•Be sure the transmission window and the CD player’s sensor are
free from dust. Excessive dust might prevent reception.
•If direct sunlight or another strong light source strikes the remote
control signal sensor part of the CD player, it may impair the
remote control's operation. If there is a problem, place the CD
player away from the light source.
•If this unit is installed in a rack with glass doors, the glass doors'
thickness or color might make it necessary to use the remote-
control transmitter a shorter distance from the unit.
•Use the remote control with a 60-degree angle of the CD player.
•Maximum distance Is within 7 meters directly facing toward the CD
player.

© Power “STANDBY (!)/ON” switch
(POWER, Jt STANDBY (!) * ON)
This switch switches ON and OFF the secondary circuit power
only. The unit is in the “standby” condition when this switch is
set to the STANDBY (!) position. Regardless of the switch
setting, the primary circuit is always “live" as long as the
power cord is connected to an electrical outlet.

VIRTUAL BATTERY OPERATION
1 Press POWER to switch on the power.
If there is a disc in the disc tray, play will start from the first
track.
2 Press A OPEN/CLOSE to open the disc tray
and insert a disc.
(Also available from the remote control)
Before attempting to use the remote control transmitter to
open the disc tray, make sure that there are no obstructions in
front of the unit.
3 Press A OPEN/CLOSE again to close the disc
tray.

Lights when the total number of tracks exceeds 20
•The total playing time displayed includes the silent sections
between tracks. For this reason, it may be a few seconds
longer than the playing time indicated on the disc.

The unit stops automatically when the last track finishes play¬
ing.
■ VIRTUAL BATTERY OPERATION indicator
This indicates that the circuit (virtual battery) for eliminating the very
faint noise contained in the power supply during play is now oper¬
ating.
The indicator lights in both play and pause modes.
