Typical installation The following diagram shows two examples of a typical installation with
network receivers.
Figure 2. Figure 2 – Network receivers may be placed anywhere in your
network
How it works In the Smart-Vue Client monitoring application, the Smart-Vue Network
Receiver functions as if it were connected directly to your Smart-Vue Server
computer, like a serial or USB receiver.
The difference is that the receiver resides on the Ethernet network and
communicates via TCP/IP. The provided Lantronix port redirection
software enables your computer to access the network receiver via a virtual
COM port. After setting up the port redirection software, you select the
appropriate COM port to include the network receiver in your Smart-Vue
monitoring system.

Requirements and recommendations
6 Smart-Vue Network Receiver (TCP/IP) Installation Guide Thermo Fisher Scientific
Requirements and
recommendations This installation guide does not cover the installation of Smart-Vue
end-point modules or Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software. Please
see the documentation (e.g., the Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Server/Client
/USB-Serial Wireless Receiver manual and the Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue
Software User Manual on the CD-ROM) provided with your software if
you need information regarding Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client
software installation.
For the purposes of this installation guide, we assume the following:
• Smart-Vue Server/Smart-Vue Client software is installed and configured,
and you have access rights to make changes.
• You have experience with networks, COM ports and TCP/IP. If not,
contact and work with your system administrator.
General requirements
and recommendations • The personal computer (PC) running Smart-Vue Server software runs
continuously, 24/7/365, and should be connected to an Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) that protects against power surges and provides
power to back up the PC and components.
• The AC adapter used for your network receiver (if applicable) should
also be plugged into the UPS.
Note If your network receiver is on the other side of a router or a remote
firewall, then UDP ports 30718, 43282 and 43283 may need to be added to
the firewall’s exclusion list. You may experience trouble opening this COM
port if these UDP ports are not excluded. Please check with your system
administrator for help.
• The UPS is also recommended as a power backup for your
communication/network systems.
• Weekly manual system testing (e.g., pulling a probe, verifying the
communications system is working) is recommended.
• Recommended maintenance and calibration procedures should be
followed.
• If you are storing cold products, Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends
use of a back-up cooling system (e.g., CO2 or LN2) to maintain freezer
chamber temperature below the critical level should a power failure
occur. Contact your local sales representative for more information.

Requirements and recommendations
Thermo Fisher Scientific Smart-Vue Network Receiver (TCP/IP) Installation Guide 7
• Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends that Installation and Operational
Qualifications (IQ/OQ) be performed before initial use.
• For timely notification of an emergency/alarm, it is critical to establish
primary, secondary and tertiary call-out procedures with escalation so
contact is not dependent on reaching one individual. Ideally, ultimate
contact is with a security department or company with 24/7
monitoring.
Please see the Thermo Scientific Smart-Vue Software User Manual for an

Configuring receiver IP
and serial parameters The next step is to use your Web browser to connect directly to the network
receiver and then configure its basic parameters.
To configure the network receiver, you need to plug in the provided AC
adapter. Connect your network receiver either into the network directly
using a regular RJ-45 Ethernet cable or into your computer using a
cross-over cable. The receiver does not need to be placed in its final location
for this operation, but it does need to be on the same network.
With either connection method, the computer you are using to configure
the receiver needs to be on the same subnet as the receiver. (For example, if
the receiver IP address is 192.168.0.100, then your computer IP address
must be on the subnet 192.168.0.X.) You might need to change the IP
address of your computer.
Smart-Vue Network Receivers are delivered with a default IP address to
ensure that you can access them over the network. The default IP address is:
192.168.0.100.
The process described in this section requires knowing an available static IP
address and ensuring that the IP address is the same classification (class) as
192.168.0.x. Contact your system administrator for assistance.
Adapting the receiver to
your network To adapt the network receiver to your network, do the following:
1. Open your Internet browser (e.g., Internet Explorer).
2. Type 192.168.0.100 in the address bar, and then press Enter on your
keyboard. Click on OK if you are prompted to enter a login name
and password.
3. Be sure to take note of the name and password you provide; Since
there is no default password programmed into the receiver, you will
need your password to gain access via the XPortTM software.

Placing your network
receiver for best
performance
For optimal operation, follow these placement recommendations:
• To avoid electrical interference, place the receiver at least 80 cm (31 in.)
away from electrical outlets, wiring and network cabling.
• For best signal propagation, place the receiver in an open area at a
slightly elevated location (i.e., not directly on the ground), about 2
meters (6.5 ft.) high.
Activating your network
receiver The Smart-Vue Network Receiver is a standalone device that requires mains
power for operation. To activate your receiver:
1. Screw the provided antenna onto the network receiver without
forcing it.
2. Place the receiver as described in the previous section, and use the
wall-mount adapter or Velcro® tape to adhere it.
3. Plug the AC adapter into the electrical power outlet or UPS.
Note We highly recommend that you use a UPS for your receiver(s).

4. Insert the adapter’s AC adapter plug into the network receiver. The
network receiver’s two red LEDs light up for a couple of seconds,
and then one of them turns off.
5. 5. Use the provided RJ-45 Ethernet cable to plug the receiver into
your network.
Configuring the network
receiver as a COM port Although your network receiver actually communicates via TCP/IP, your
computer addresses it through a standard COM port, like a regular serial
device. For this to work, you must redirect the TCP port you configured in
the Configuring receiver IP and serial parameters section to a simulated
COM port using the Lantronix CPR software. Your Smart-Vue Server
software then communicates with the receiver through this simulated COM
port.
Follow these steps to configure port redirection on the Smart-Vue Server.
1. Click on Start ==> Programs ==> Lantronix ==> CPR ==> CPR
Manager.
2. Click on Add/Remove.
