KawoNi Babycarrier:

Tips and advice for wearing your KawoNi
⦿Wearing your baby with the KawoNi takes a little practice, just like tying a sling. After a few attempts at tying
you will be much more confident. Babies sense this initial uncertainty and can therefore get rather fussy
sometimes. For babies it is also a new feeling to be carried in a wearing carrier. Give your baby a little time to
get used to it. After using the KawoNi more often, you will both be familiar with it.
⦿It is best to make your first attempts with a well-fed, well-rested, and happy baby, when you are not under stress,
as this can be transferred to the baby. If your baby starts to cry when putting on the carrier, take a few steps and
move around. But please always make sure that the hip belt is securely knotted or buckled and that the shoulder
straps are securely closed and clipped in properly.
⦿The KawoNi should be tied so that it fits closely, like a second skin for your baby. If this is not the case, or if
baby is crooked, or baby sags down in the KawoNi over time, please unfasten the shoulder straps, always
supporting the baby with one hand, and tighten them properly and fasten them again. Whenever you feel a need
to support the child with your hands, or to compensate with your posture, please tighten the shoulder straps.
⦿Please always carry your baby facing toward you, and never facing away, regardless of which carrier or sling
you use, in order to ensure optimal support and the tucked and spread leg position. When the baby can no longer
be strapped on the front, or pushes away from you, consider switching to the back version after the baby has
become used to the KawoNi.
⦿Select clothing made of natural materials in order to ensure optimal temperature control. The back of the child’s
neck is the most reliable way to check its temperature. Please provide optimal sun protection in the summer.
6

⦿KawoNi carrier (apron tied, full buckle or half buckle) from size 50 to end of wearing
period (100 cm) maximum 20 kilograms.
⦿Modular wearing carrier; each part is available separately.
⦿Back part made of diagonally elastic sling cloth that provides good support for the back
and promotes a tucked and spread leg position, important for correct hip development.
The back part can grow continuously with the ring function on the shoulder straps.
⦿Hook-and-loop strap (between the legs of the baby) so that it can grow through several
sizes.
⦿Padded hip belt made of corduroy cloth, to be tied at the back or buckled.
⦿Padded shoulder straps, binding straps, or buckle straps made of comfortable organic
wide corduroy.
⦿Adjustable head support with extra long straps that adjust to fit the size of baby’s head.
⦿Side loops for the full-buckle function once baby can sit up, which distributes the weight
better for the person carrying the baby.
⦿Buckles on the supports with plus and minus function, allowing the apron tie for
newborns and merging at the belly for back wearing.
⦿Hidden inside tunnel for the Onbuhimo function.

elastic at the start of the belt strap.
In a pair of straps, the plus/minus buckles are opposites.

The ring system
♥Both ends of the extended wings of the back part are threaded through the
two rings of a strap, near the head support. Thread the end of the wing
between the two rings from above and tighten.
♥The ring system makes it possible to replace the straps and to adjust the
length and width of the back part.
♥For the full-buckle version, the buckles on each strap
should be attached to their mating parts on the inside tunnel.
Tip
It is easier to adjust the KawoNi if
the folds of the wings are positioned
between the rings and do not
overlap each other.

13
The hip belt
♥Select the outer side of the reversible KawoNi.
- For apron wearing, place the outer side at the top.
-When using the full length of the back panel, the desired outer side is at the bottom.
♥The hip belt
is inserted with the hook-and-loop side facing up and is attached to the counterpart on the inside of the back part.
♥The hook-and-loop closure
In the tunnel of the back panel, there are 5x5 cm hook-and-loop element on both sides. A counterpart covers
them on each side to protect them. If necessary, simply move the counterpart to the other side.

Basic Adjustment

KawoNi!
Tips for basic adjustments
⦿Spread out your KawoNi on a soft surface (e.g., bed or couch).
⦿Position the baby on it and adjust the crotch strap (cloth between baby’s legs, adjustable with hook-an—
loop). It should always reach from the back of one knee to the back of the other.
⦿The legs should optimally be spread at 90°.
⦿Your baby’s knees are tucked up and located at the level of his bottom, in line with the hips.
⦿For newborns, it is recommended to pull in the crotch strap as far as possible.
⦿Adjust the back part properly by tightening the loops on the rings. It should reach to the base of the baby’s
neck. Larger babies make have an arm out, of course. Finally, se outside cure with a knot at the rings.
⦿For newborns, tighten the neck support slightly and adjust the length of the back part to the height of the
hip/lower chest belt by folding (tilting) the hip belt from upward once from the outside.

The crotch strap
Hook-and-loop (fleece) on the inside of the hip
belt.
The matching counterpart (the rough side of the
hook-and-loop) is located in the hip belt tunnel of
the KawoNi.
We lay out our carrier on a soft, non-slip surface and place
our baby in the middle of the KawoNi.
(The tilt loop is the midpoint of the carrier.)
We set the correct crotch strap width (cloth part between baby’s legs)
using the hook-and-loop, so that it extends from the back of one knee
to the back of the other knee.
16

♥In order to achieve optimal tension in the back panel, we work out the
wrinkles from the mid-back of the child to the back of the knee. We
recommend this step be repeated every time the KawoNi carrier is used.
♥In order to perfectly adjust the width of the neck region and the length
of the back panel to the child, we pull the wing through the rings, strand
by strand.
♥We can secure the adjusted position
with a knot in front of the rings.
Tip
Both the crotch strap adjustment and the ring
adjustment can be kept until the next clothing

♥The head support provides support to baby’s head when sleeping, or for newborns without the neck
musculature.
♥To use the head support, run the straps through the belts on the shoulder straps and secure them with a knot.
The length can be adjusted this way. The head support can now be tightened as desired, based on size.
♥When securing the head support, we make sure that it is not too tight in order to avoid overextending the child,
but also not too loose, to make sure the head support works.
♥For newborns, it is also recommended that the width of the back panel at the neck be adjusted by pulling in the
wings, so that the baby's neck is safely well supported. The KawoNi does not have a neck seam, which
greatly reduced the tension in the neck region of the back panel. This is good for babies with sensitive neck
and throat areas.
♥The black elastic loop on the straps of the head support make it much easier to pull up the head support when
worn on the back.

Front & Back carry
♥Once we have set the crotch strap
width, we fold the hip belt upward from
the outside.
Then we run the buckle through the
safety elastic and close it.
Tip
While one hand is always holding the child, the free
hand always works ON THE SAME SIDE
20
♥To be able to support the child back very well, please
move on both sides the back panel under the child knees.
Next keep the remaining material to the outside.
Now the child back is free of fold and the thick seam of the
side loops deliver no more disagreeable pressure to the
child.
