WARNING
The following heat pump Troubleshooting Guide is to be used in
diagnosing and repairing Trydent branded pool heat pumps containing
R-410A refrigerant . They are not intended for use with any other
manufacturers heat pumps.
Heat Pump pool heaters are similar to the heat pumps for home heating
and cooling in that they contain refrigerant. As such, service
personnel should observe EPA regulations for refrigerant handling. Pool
heat pumps operate on 240 volts A/C. There is a risk of electric shock
at all terminals and the heat pump should only be serviced by trained
personnel.
To use this guide, determine the model number of the heat pump and
the nature of the problem. Refer to the Table of Contents to find the
appropriate page for the problem and follow the flow charts to the
solution.

recommend the use of a bypass system to make
the maintenance and winterizing of the heat
pump easier.

HOW A HEAT PUMP WORKS
1. The fan draws outside air through the evaporator. The air transfers its heat to the
refrigerant which is running through the evaporator. This process works down to
outside air temperatures of 7c for normal heat pumps.
2. The compressor draws in the heated refrigerant and increases its temperature by
compressing it; Through compression the Refrigerant goes from vapor to liquid state
and gets pushed to the condenser
3. The Condenser is a tube which transfers the heat from the refrigerant to the Pool
water. While in the condenser the refrigerant goes back from liquid to vapor and
heats the pool water around it. Titanium is now used in condensers for its resistance
to corrosion

TRANSFORMER

Explanation:
12v / 24v AC to the control card
24v AC to the contactor
Blue wire : Common
White wire : 12v
Yellow wire: 24v
Transformers fail very rarely. If display
cuts off intermittently, then Change
Card followed by Transformer

CONTACTOR AND
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
Connect Input Power line into the BOTTOM of
the Contactor
Signs of Contactor Failure include Buzzing,
control card resetting, and compressor not
starting

RUN CAPACITOR
Nirvana uses DUAL capacitors for Single Phase Units – This means
that 1 Capacitor is used for Both the compressor and the fan motor .
Sometime only 1 Part of the Capacitor Fails
Use Capacitor measuring option on your multimeter to troubleshoot
When replacing a Capacitor - Make sure the connections are correct,
and verify the model/capacities that are required (Fan motor and
Compressor Labels indicate required Capacitor type.)
Wire descriptions
Terminal C for Common
White wire ( coming from the contactor)
White and brown wire ( coming from the fan)
Terminal Fan for the Fan
Brown wire ( coming from the fan )
Terminal Herm for the compressor
Yellow wire ( coming from the compressor )

ADJUSTABLE FLOW SWITCH
This part is used to make sure the heat pump has water flow to
turn itself on.
Can be used as the ‘on/off’ switch for the heat pump in situations
where the pump is on a timer.
Can be ADJUSTED to lower starting flow when used with
Variable speed pumps.
TO ADJUST:
First - lift the latch in order to allow the changes to take effect.
Afterwards you can raise or lower the pressure at which the
connection will be interrupted. It can be adjusted from 1 to 5 psi.

•Pool is not heating
•Check Ambient Temperature
•The colder it is outside, the less heat there is in the air, the
faster heat escapes from the pool and the lower the heat
pump performance.
•Check Water Flow – Higher Flow = Better performance.
•Check that heat pump is on
•Heater is Leaking
•This might be condensation which is normal and can reach over
10gph when it is humid outside. Turn the heater off for a few
hours and see if zone dries out or test for salinity/chlorine.
•Heater is Cycling On/off/on/off – Check water connections are not
inverted

THE HEAT PUMP IS NOT
WORKING PROPERLY/NOTHING
IS TURNING ON
Check if the contactor has 240v (Bottom of Contactor)
Check to see if the transformer is functionning properly and that it is
providing 12/24vAC current to the control card
If everything is fine but still nothing is turning on, change the control
card.
If 3PHASE UNIT – Check the Phase protector in the unit

THERE IS AN EXISTING HEATING
REQUEST, THE FAN WORKS, THE
RED HEATING LIGHT IS ON, NO
CODES ARE DISPLAYED AND YET
THE COMPRESSOR ISN’T STARTING
1) Check for defective contactor -
1) Listen if it engages
2) Check Contactor Coil
2) For 3 Phase Units – Check for fault on
Phase protector
3) Check/Replace Run Capacitor
4) Check for compressor issues
1) Check compressor Amp Draw when it
tries to start (LRA)
2) Check if compressor is Shorted to
ground
3) Check Resistance between wires

THE HEAT PUMP IS
MAKING AN UNUSUAL
NOISE
Noise from vibrations
Check for fan imbalance
Change when necessary
Check that all of the screws are in place
Electrical noise
Change the defective contactor
Noise from the motor
Check the run capacitor
Check the Motor
