Step 1: Pick your speaker locations
Speakerssoundbestwhentheypointtowardyourears.TheT0hasbeen
designedtomakethiseasy,whetherusedonadeskorinaroom.
The support is optional for desktop usage, but we recommend leaving it
installed if you have space to improve portability. For space constrained
applications the supplied 2.5mm Allen wrench can be used to remove the
support. The support can also be moved to the other side of the cabinet, as
the T0 works with the passive radiator facing either up or down. Note that
when the passive radiator faces down the support must face down too; the
speaker cannot be allowed to rest on the passive radiator.
Desktop Usage
Placethespeakersonthesuppliedisolatedpadswiththesupports
andpassiveradiatorsfacingup.Positiontheactivespeakerwiththe
connectionsontherightsideofyourseatedposition(thiscanbechanged
insoftware).Trytogetyourspeakersatequaldistanceoneachside.
In-Room Usage
Placethespeakersonthesuppliedpadswiththesupportsandpassive
radiatorsfacingdown.Positiontheactivespeakerwiththeconnectionson
therightsideofyourlisteningposition(thiscanbechangedinsoftware,see
speakercongurationsettings).Ideallyyourspeakersshouldbeatequal
distancefromyourbestlisteningpositiononeachside,andapproximately
atearlevelwhenyouareseated.

Step 5: Optimize for your space
Vanatooknowseachcustomer’senvironmentandlisteningpreferencesare
dierent.T0speakershavebass,treble,andvolumeadjustmentstoallowyouto
tuneyourspeakerstoyourlisteningenvironment.
1. Turntheaudiodevicevolumeuptothe¾point.
2. Turntheactivespeakervolumeknobuptothemaximumvolumeyoudesire.
3. Thisshouldprovideagoodvolumecombinationsothat,inthefuture,you
shouldonlyneedtoadjustthevolumecontrolonyouraudiodevicetoachieve
yourdesiredlisteningvolume.Adjustthevolumecombinationdownifyour
settingscausedistortion.Aswithallspeakers,prolongeddistortioncancause
permanentdamage.
4. Adjustthetrebleandbasssettingsasdesired.Inmostcases,theoptimum
settingforaatfrequencyresponseistosetthetrebleandbassknobsatthe
midsettings.Thisisourdefaultsetting.Tondouthowtoadjustthetreble
andbasssettingsintheT0pleaserefertothesectiononthissubjectlaterin
thismanual.

Byusingthevolumeknob,thevolume/treble/bassselectorswitchandthePair/Progbuttoncertain
settingscanbechangedintheT0tomakeitoperatealittledierently.Thefeaturesthatcanbe
changedarelistedinthetablebelow.Toselectoneofthesesetupitemsyoumustrstpowero
theT0byunpluggingtheDCpowerplug,thensetthevolumeknobandthevolume/treble/bass
switchpertheselectionyouwishfromthetablebelow,thenwhileholdingthePair/Progbutton
downconnecttheDCpowerplug.FinallyreleasethePair/Progbuttonandthenewselectionis
lockedin.Notethatthedefaultsettingsarealsoshowninthetablebelow,soifallelsefailsyou
canrestoreallsettingstotheirdefaultselections.
AlsonotethatwhenasetupparameterhasbeenacceptedtheT0willashthepoweronblue
LEDaswellasthefrontamberLEDthreetimesassoonasthePair/Progbuttonisreleasedto
acknowledgetheparameterhasbeenset.InthecasethatT0isresettothefactorydefaultsthe
blueandamberLEDswillbeashedanumberoftimeswhichindicatecodedinformationabout
theT0.AfterthedefaultsetupiscompletethepoweronblueLEDwillremainonwhichindicates
thefactorydefaultsaresetandtheT0isreadytoplaymusic.Allofspeakercongurationsettings
arenon-volatilewhichmeanstheywillremainevenifyoupowerotheT0.
TIP WhenyouhavecompletedthespeakercongurationsettingsbesuretosettheV-T-Bswitchto“volume”andsetthevolume

withtheShelvedDSPsettingselected,thecrossovertothesubwooferissetat125Hz.AT0set
totheShelvedDSPsettingwithasubwooferconnectedisthecongurationwhichwillresultinthe
loudestpossiblemusicfromtheT0.
Theoptional“Flat”DSPsettingshouldbeusedwhenyouareplacingthespeakersonstands
atleasttwofeetawayfromanywallorifyouareusingtheT0ashomemixingmonitors.Ifyou
connectasubwoofertotheT0withtheFlatDSPsettingselected,thecrossovertothesubwoofer
issetat80Hz.
Stereo/Mono setting—SettingtheT0tothedefaultStereomodewillgiveyoutrueleft/right
stereooutputwiththeactivespeaker(theonewiththevolumeknob)beingtherightchannel.If
yousettheT0totheoptionalMonomodetheinput’sleftandrightchannelsaresummedtogether
andthesamecontentisoutputtobothspeakers.UsetheMonomodeifyouwanttotakejustthe
activespeakerwithyoutothegaragetoworkonyourcarbutdon’twanttobothertakingboth
speakers.JustsettheT0tomonomode,plugintheactivespeakerintopower,andpushmusicto
thespeakerwithyourBluetoothonyourphone.Ifyouwanttoincludeyourpassivespeakerinthe
Monomodethat’sOKtoo.
Auto Input Switch setting—InthedefaultsettingwhentheT0goestosleepitwillautomatically
resettheinputselectiontotheAutoInputSwitchmode.Thiswayifsomeoneinyourfamilyuses
theremotecontroltoselectaspecicinputthenanhourlateryouwalkintheroomyouwillalways
knowthatsendingmusiconanyinputwillbringtheunitoutofsleepmodeandyourmusicwill
play.MostpeopleshouldleavetheT0inthissetting.
IntheoptionalsettingwhentheT0goestosleepitwillnotchangetheinputselection.Tobring
theT0outofsleepmodetheusermustplaymusiconthelastinputselectedorhitanykeyon
theremotetobringtheT0outofsleepmodethenselectthedesiredinput.Thisisprobablyaless
frequentlyusedsettingbutsomeusersmaynditusefulinacontrolledenvironment.
Limiters setting—InthedefaultLimitersettingtheT0DSPincorporateslimiters(sometimecalled
compressors).ThesearecommonlyusedinmakingPopMusicrecordings,andhavetheeectof
increasingtheoverallplaybackvolume.Theyareturned-onbydefaultintheT0tobothincrease
themaximumplaybackvolumeandreducethepeakpowerdrawofthesystem.Whenthesystem
isplayedatfullvolumewithheavybassdemandsandthelimiterturnedo,itispossibletotrigger

VanatooTransparentZerospeakersaredesignedtoprovideexcellentbassatlouderthan
normallisteninglevelswithouttheneedforasubwoofer.Howeverifyouareplayingvery
bassheavymusic,addingasubwooferwillallowyoutoplayevenlowerbassandachieve
louderoverallvolume.Whenasubwooferisconnected,theactivespeakerautomatically
detectstheconnectionandaddsadigitalcrossovernetworkbetweentheT0speakersand

theT0activespeakeralongwiththethreepositionV-T-B(volume/treble/bass)switchandthe
Pair/ProgbuttonbothlocatedonthebackoftheT0activespeaker.Tosetthetreblesetting,
startbyplayingsomemusic.WhilethemusicisplayingmovetheV-T-Bswitchtothe“treble”
position.Nowadjustthetreblesettingtotasteusingthevolumeknob(whichatthispointin
timeisredenedtobeatrebleknob).Notethatthetwodotsatthecenteroftheknob’stravel
denotesthe“at”position.Whenyouhavethetrebleadjustedtotastedepressandrelease
thePair/Progbutton.Thisactionlocksinthetreblesettingsoyoucanmoveontothebass

onthetopoftheT0activespeaker.WhenyouhavetheblueLEDintensitywhereyoulikeit
thenreleasethePair/Progbutton.That’sit.Nomoreneedofapieceofblackelectricaltape
stuckonthepoweronLEDtokeepyourbedroomdark.TheblueLEDwillnowbeatthis
intensityuntilyouchangeit(oruntilyoupowerotheT0).
TIP WhenyouhavecompletedtheLEDintensityprocessbyreleasingthePair/Progbutton

Forexample,iftheT0isconnectedtoanMP3playerviathe3.5mmanalogconnectionand

MP3playeristhesourcethatwillbeplayed.Ifhowever,theMP3playeristurnedoandthe
networkedaudiodeviceislefton,thenetworkedaudiodevicewillbethesourcethatisplayed.
When switching from a higher priority input to a lower priority input, the higher priority
input must be OFF (or silent) for 7 seconds before the T0 amplier will switch to the
lower priority input. Thisenablestheampliertodiscernbetweenthehigherinputbeing
turnedoandnormalinter-tracksilencethusavoidingswitchingtothelowerpriorityinput
betweenaudiotracks.This7secondwaittimeisnotnecessarywhenswitchingfromasource
thatislowerinprioritytoonethatishigher.Therefore,switchingfromalowerpriorityinputto
ahigherpriorityinputwillhappenalmostimmediately.
