1 SUMMARY
DT-16/DT-18 is a portable notebook autoranging digital multimeter
(DT-16 is 3 1/2 and DT-18 is 3 3/4). It is a full - featured, stable
performance, high precision, low power consumption and novel
structure, safe and reliable multimeter, and it can be used to
measure AC/DC voltage, frequency, duty cycle, resistance, ca
pacitance, diode forward voltage drop and on-off test. It is an
ideal measuring instrument for the majority of users. (the DT-
16 can be not used for measuring the frequency, duty cycle, and
capacitance).
This operating instruction includes relative safety and warning
information. Please read carefully and comply with all warnings and
precautions.
2 GUIDELINES OF SAFETY OPERATION
Please note that the warning label and warning notices.
A CAUTION indicates a hazard to the user, or action that may
damage the instrument ordevice under test.
The instrument follows the GB4793 safety requirements of
electronic measuring instrument strictly and designs and produces
following the IEC61010-1 safety standards. And it is accordance
with the safety standards of double insulation voltage standard
CATII 300V and Pollution Degree II. The protection provided by the
instrument will be weaken or lose if it is not operated in accordance
with the instructions.
1. Please check the insulation layer of the probe before use in case
of any damage or abnormal phenomena. Please doesn’t use
if there is any unusDTl phenomenon, such as probe bare, the
insulation layer damaged, cabinet rupture, LCD monitor doesn’t

display.
2. When using the probe, your nger must be placed after the probe
nger gDTrd ring.
3. Do not apply voltage more than 500V between the meter terminal
and ground to prevent electrical shock and damage to the meter.
4. Please be sure of carefully when measuring the DCV (higher
than 60V) or ACV (higher than 42Vrms). Please keep in mind
that the gures can’t exceed the protection position in the probe
in case of electric shock.
5. It is prohibited to use the instrument without back cover or the
back cover is damaged, otherwise electric shock will happen.
6. In order to prevent electric shock and damage to the instrument,
the measured signals should not exceed the prescribed limits.
7. Please place the function switch in the correct range stalls when
measuring. Please cut the connection of the probe and the circuit
under test prior to conversion of the rotary switch. In order to
prevent the meter, it is strictly prohibited to convert stalls during
the measurement.
8. Please don’t change the internal wires of the instrument in case
to damage the instrument and endanger the safety.
9. Please replace the battery in time to ensure the measurement
accuracy when the “ ” shows on the LCD display.
10. Don’t keep or use the instrument under the high temperature,
high humidity, and flammable, explosive and strong
electromagnetic eld environment.
11. Please use a damp cloth and mild cleaning detergent to
maintain instrument case, do not use abrasives.

12. Auto power off
When the instrument knob and function keys were no action in
about 30 minutes, the meter enters dormancy status; In sleep
mode, toggle the knob or press the panel button, the instrument will
automatically boot ( into the working mode). But for DT18, if waking
the instrument by pressing SELECT button, the automatically shut
down function of the instrument will be cancelled. For DT16, if
waking it by pressing HOLD button, the automatically shut down
function will be cancelled.

6 KEY FUNCTIONS AND AUTO POWER OFF
6.1 SELECT Button
The key is the resistance and capacitance measurement, buzz off
and diode test function switching key, accompanied by beep sound
when the switch prompt. (For DT16, is no capacitor switching).
In sleeping mode, press this key to wake the meter and the
automatically power-off function will be cancelled. (Only for DT-18).
6.2 RELATIVE Button
When press this button, the meter will display the current value
as a reference value, after that, the readings of measurement will
automatically subtracting this reference value. Press this button
again; the meter will exit the relative value measurement into
the normal measurement state; frequency / duty cycle measurement
has no the relative value function.
6.3 DATA HOLD Button
Press this button and the display value is locked and remained.
Press this button again, the locked state is released, and the meter
enters the normal measuring mode. For DT16, in sleeping mode,
press this button to wake the instrument and the automatically
power-off function will be cancelled.
6.4 Hz/Duty measurement
In the ACV/DCV file, press this button and convert into Hz/Duty
measurement (Press Hz/Duty button back and forth to measure the
frequency or duty cycle); After measuring the Hz/DUTY return
the DCV or ACV, the measurement range of the instrument is

DCV-400mV or ACV-4V, and the "AUTO" characters on the LCD
disappears. If measuring the higher voltage at this point, please
toggle function rotary switch or shut down the instrument, and re-
set the DCV/ACV as automatic range and test.
6.5 RANGE Button
Boot by default auto range, press the button to switch to
manDTl range. Under manDTl range, jump up a le when press this
button one time. When jumping to the most upscale and continuing
to press this button, the button will go to the low-grade, and followed
by this cycle. If press this button over 2 seconds, and the switch will
go back to the automatic range state.
6.6 MAXH Button
The A/D conversion will continue to work if press this button, and
the display value will always update and remain the maximum
value.
6.7 Auto power off
For DT-16, during the measurement, the instrument will be in
“Automatic Shutdown” (hibernation) to conserve power, if the
function keys and dial switch have no action within 15 minutes. And
press HOLD button to switch on the instrument then the auto power
off function will be cancelled. Under auto power off state, press
function keys or turn the dial switch, and the instrument will switch
on automatically.
Cautions: Under the sleeping mode, press the HOLD button
to wake the instrument, and the auto power off function will be
cancelled.
For DT-18, during the measurement, the instrument will be in
“Automatic Shutdown” (hibernation) to conserve power, if the
function keys and dial switch have no action within 30 minutes. And
press SELECT button to switch on the instrument then the auto

power off function will be cancelled. Under auto power off state,
press function keys or turn the dial switch, and the instrument will
switch on automatically.
7 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
When the instrument power is turned on, please observe the LCD
screen, such as a “ ” symbol indicates that the battery is low, in
order to ensure measurement accuracy please replace the battery
immediately.
Please note the “ ” symbol next to the test pen jack before the
measurement which is to remind you to pay attention to the test
voltage and current, which do not exceed the indicated value.
7.1 DCV measurement
⑴Put red probe into the negative terminal of the tested power
source, and black probe to the positive terminal of the tested
power source.

⑵ Put rotary switch to DCV les.
⑶Please read the measured voltage value directly from the
display.
⑷The LCD will display negative readings if exchange the probes.
Cautions:
Don’t input the voltage above 500V. It is possible to measure
higher voltage but it will damage the instrument.
Avoid electrical shock when measuring the high voltage.
Cut off all the connection between the probe and the circuit
when nishing all the measurement.
7.2 ACV measurement
The operating instructions and cautions are the same as the DCV
measurement.
7.3 Resistance measurement

⑴ Put rotary switch to "Ω " measurement le. (DT16 has
no )
⑵Put the probe parallel to the tested resistance.
⑶Please read the measured resistance value directly from the
display.
Cautions:
Please cut off all the power in the circuit and all capacitors
exhausted resid DTl charge before measuring the online
resistance in order to ensure measurement correctly.
When measuring resistance at 400Ω le (DT-16 is 200Ω le),
there will be 0.1-0.3Ω error. In order to get accurate result,
please first short the probe and keep the result at the same
time. At last, the short-circuit value should be subtracted from
the nal value. For DT-18, the RELATIVE measurement function
is suggested to use.
The display will show “OL” if there is no input, for example, the
tested resistance of the circuit is open.
It will take several seconds to stable the reading when
measuring the resistance higher than 1M and it is normal for the
high resistance measurement.
7.4 Hz and Duty measurement (Figure 4 the dashed box shown
is limited to DT18)
⑴ Put rotary switch to DCV or ACV le.
⑵Press the Hz and Duty button, and start the frequency
measurement.
⑶Put the test probe parallel to the test frequency signal source.
⑷Please read the measured value directly from the display.

⑸Press the Hz and Duty button again and start the DUTY
measurement.
Cautions:
The tested resolution has a little difference according to the input
frequency and waveform. The resolution of the instrument is
according to the sine wave to develop.
7.5 Diode and Buzzer on-off measurement
⑴ Put rotary switch to Ω le. (DT16 has no le)
⑵Press SELECT button to start diode measurement (press this
button again to start Buzzer on-off measurement)
⑶If connect red probe to the positive terminal of the tested diode
and black probe to the negative terminal, and approximated
positive PN pressure drop value can be obtained directly from
the display. (Set the function switch to the measuring stalls, and
put probe parallel connected to the two terminals of the tested
circuit. the circuit is working and the buzzer ringing continuous
and the red indicator lights if the resistance of those is ≤70Ω,
and the LCD display the resistance value of the terminals of the
tested circuit).
Cautions:
The display will show “OL” if the tested diode of the circuit is
open or the polarity of the diode is opposite.
Approximated positive PN pressure drop value can be obtained
directly from the display, the unit is mV. The normal value for
silicone PN is 500-800mV.
Please cut off all the power in the circuit and all capacitors
exhausted residDTl charge before measuring the online diode.
For safety reasons, please don’t input voltage DCV>60V or

ACV>30V.
7.6 Capacitance measurement (Figure 4 the dashed box shown
is limited to DT18)
⑴ Put rotary switch to Ω le.
⑵ Press SELECT button three times and the instrument starts
capacitance measurement.
⑶ Please choose the RELATIVE measurement mode, because the
capacitance le has display values in the open circuit.
⑷ Press RELECTIVE button once.
⑸ Please connect the probe to the tested capacitor and read the
measured capacitance value directly from the display.
Cautions:
All capacitors exhausted residDTl charge before measurement.
When the online capacitance is measured, the power of
the tested circuit must be turned off and all capacitors fully
discharged.
If the measured capacitance is a polar capacitor, please connect
the red probe to the positive of the capacitor and black probe to
the negative of the capacitor.
It will take several seconds to display the value when test the
capacitance >10µF which is normal.
For safety reasons, please don’t input voltage DCV>60V or
ACV>30Vrms.

9 BATTERY REPLACEMENT
When the LCD display under voltage " " prompt, it should be to
replace the built-in battery otherwise it will affect the measurement
accuracy.
Steps:
1. The power switches to "off" position, and make the probe away
from the input jack.
2. Using a screwdriver to tighten the screws of the Battery cover,
remove the battery cover, you can replace the battery of the
under voltage.
3. Take away the old battery and replace a new 3V battery.
