Introduction
Note: Read all of the instructions completely before installing or operating this equipment.
The information in this manual covers installation, programming and operation for the V1400X-DVC-3
System Console. The installation procedures should only be performed by a qualified technician using
approved materials in accordance with national, state and local wiring codes.
The V1400X-DVC-3 System Console is a central control station capable of controlling camera stations
connected to Vicon’s NOVACPU-based matrix control systems, digital multiplexers and video cassette
recorders (VCRs). The menu-based LCD display changes to display the proper functionality for the
selected control system. Selections are made using fiber optic backlit soft keys and the system console
keyboard. Multicolored, oversized keys and a hand rest, as well as user-defined macros and an on-line
help system are just a few of the features that make the system console easy to use. Refer to Figure 1

2 •Introduction XX090-02-00 Rev 1102 System Console
System Configurations
There are four general system configurations using the V1400X-DVC-3 System Console: Standalone,
NOVA/AURORA/VCR, MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR and AURORA/VCR ONLY.
• In a standalone system, there is no control system (CPU). You may connect receivers directly to
the system console in this configuration. Multiple keyboards may be connected in all
configurations except for standalone.
• AURORA/VCR ONLY systems allow you to control multiplexers and VCRs. Like standalone
systems, AURORA/VCR ONLY systems do not include a control system. When using VCRs, you
must also use Vicon's Multi-Output Interface devices (MIU).
• In an MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR system, you will need a Multi-System Selector. The master
system console can be used to select each of the control systems using the system console
V1300 or V1400 Series Control screen. You may use Vicon’s proprietary AurorANet 2-wire RS-
485 protocol in MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR systems.
• A NOVA/AURORA/VCR system does not require the multi-system selector, as control system
selection is not relevant (there is only one control system). You may use Vicon’s proprietary
AurorANet 2-wire RS-485 protocol in NOVA/AURORA/VCR systems.
Two control (or “pointing”) devices are available for use with the system console, the V1400X-JST
Joystick Keypad and the V1400X-DJT Desk-Top Joystick. Only one device may be used at a time. The
joystick keypad may be customized for left- or right-handed users using a conveniently located switch. A
trackball, with an optional trackball shaft, is used to control receiver functions. Buttons are used to control
lens functions. The desk-top joystick contains one button and a rotatable shaft knob which can control all
lens functions and LEDs to indicate which function is active. A traditional joystick is used for receiver
control. Both the joystick keypad’s trackball and the V1400X-DJT’s joystick are used to make choices in
the AurorA99/AurorA or AurorA2000 menu system.

Installation and Programming Overview
The installation pages in this manual are set up in four sections, to reflect the four installation
configurations. In addition to choosing the correct installation configuration, you must also define your
system correctly using the system console software. The following steps will enable you to decide which
configuration is appropriate for your CCTV site and direct you to the corresponding programming
sections.
1. Your first step is to choose the installation configuration (mode) for your system.
If you have… then the appropriate configuration is…
• no control system (CPU) and want to control receivers and
use a matrix switcher to switch video
• Standalone, refer to page 4
• no CPU and want to control multiplexers and VCRs • AURORA/VCR ONLY, refer to page 6
• one NOVA CPU and want to control multiplexers and VCRs • NOVA/AURORA/VCR, refer to page 8
• more than one NOVA CPU and want to control multiplexers
and VCRs
• MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR, refer to
page 10
2. If you will connect the System Console to the AurorANet bus, refer to page 12.
3. If you will use the V1400X-DJT Desk-Top Joystick or V1400X-JST Joystick Keypad, refer to page 12.
4. Refer to page 16 to begin programming the system console software, continuing to define your
settings until you reach the chapter titled Communication Settings. If you chose standalone mode,
skip to the next step. If you chose any other mode and will use multiplexers in your system, you must
choose a protocol (A2000 or A99). "A2000 Protocol" refers to Vicon's proprietary 2-wire RS-485
AurorANet protocol. You may connect AurorANet devices directly to the system console. Examples of
typical devices employing AurorANet are the AurorA2000 multiplexer, this version of the system
console and the A2K-KBD Remote Keyboard. "A99 Protocol" refers to devices which do not have
AurorANet protocol, such as the AurorA/AurorA99 multiplexer and earlier versions of the system
console. To use these devices, you must use an MIU, as discussed in the MIU instruction manual.
Refer to Setting Keypad Addresses on page 21 and choose the protocol.
5. Continue with the System Settings chapter, using the following to reference the correct section. You
will only define one system (standalone, NOVA/AURORA/VCR, MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR or
AURORA/VCR ONLY), so disregard the other sections under Defining the Mode.
If you have… refer to…
Standalone mode Defining the Mode, Standalone, page 26
AURORA/VCR ONLY mode Defining the Mode, AURORA/VCR ONLY, page 27
NOVA/AURORA/VCR mode Defining the Mode, NOVA/AURORA/VCR, page 26
MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR mode Defining the Mode, MSS/NOVA/AURORA/VCR, page 26
5. If you have chosen any mode except standalone, you may have multiplexers in your system. If so,
refer to page 28.
6. Refer to page 27 if you have VCRs in your system. VCRs cannot be used in standalone mode.
7. Continue with the programming chapters, referring to the Reference chapter if necessary.
Note: Vicon strongly recommends the use of line conditioners, voltage regulators and uninterruptible
power supply systems (UPS) to prevent voltage fluctuations that can affect operation and cause
damage to the equipment.
Warning: Do not apply power to any unit until all connections are properly made.

12 •The AurorANet Bus XX090-02-00 Rev 1102 System Console
The AurorANet Bus
AurorANet is a proprietary 2-wire RS-485 protocol used to communicate between Vicon devices such as
AurorA2000 multiplexers, AurorAcorD digital recorders, system consoles and V800MIU-3A Multi-Output
Interface Devices. To maintain the proper voltage level on the AurorANet, you must define the position of
each device in the communications line. The first and last devices must be set to "end-of-line". All of your
other devices must be defined as "not end-of-line".
Note: The system console software uses the terminology “A2000 Protocol” to refer to AurorANet.
You may connect the system console on an AurorANet bus if you are using any mode except standalone
mode. An example of the system console on an AurorANet bus is shown for each applicable
configuration (MSS/NOVA/AurorA/VCR, NOVA/AurorA/VCR and AurorA/VCR ONLY) in the previous
sections of this manual. If you will use AurorANet, perform the following procedure to define your system
console as “end-of-line” or “not end-of-line”:
1. Decide on the physical location of the system console in the communications line (end or middle).
2. Locate the DIP switch on the bottom panel of the system console.

3. Set the switch as shown in Figure 10 for “end-of-line” or “not end-of-line”. Refer to Figure 11 for an
example of a system with two system consoles (one in the middle of the line and one at a end).
4. You must also set the system console software to A2000 protocol and define a system controller.
These choices are discussed in Programming chapter of this manual.
