Quad Bike-Operation (SWP-083)
1. Scope/ description of job
Operation of a quad bike including preparation, transport, use, loading and towing.
2. Critical safety issues
Potential hazard/risk
Control
A quad bike is a ‘body-interactive’
vehicle that is inclined to rollover
when its centre of gravity is
affected.
Determine if a quad bike is the safest vehicle for the task to be
done and the conditions in which it is to be used. Avoid the
use of quad bikes where possible.
Be aware the risk of rollover increases when traversing
slopes, travelling at high speeds, towing implements, carrying
heavy or unstable loads and when tyres are under or
unevenly inflated.
Only trained and competent persons to use quad bikes.
There are inherent dangers
associated with quad bikes when
operated at speed, particularly on
rough terrain or slopes.
Drive according to the terrain, conditions, user experience and
at a speed that enables hazards or obstructions to be
detected. Refer to: section 8.3 for more information.
Potential exposure to adverse
environmental conditions while
undertaking task.
Take environmental conditions into consideration when
planning work activities. Wear PPE and clothing appropriate
for the environment/ climatic conditions.

8. Requirements/ procedure
8.1 Preparation
1.
Quad bikes must only be used by trained and accredited personnel.
2.
Determine if the quad bike is the safest vehicle for the task to be done and the conditions in
which it will be used.
3.
Make certain quad bike is registered.
4.
Ensure the quad bike is suitable for the operator in terms of size and familiarity of operation
with the type of quad bike.
5.
If attachments are going to be used make sure they are compatible with the quad bike and
compliant with the weight and towing specifications set by manufacturer.
6.
Conduct pre-start check.
7.
Ensure tyres are appropriately and evenly inflated as per manufacturer’s specifications.
8.
Inform manager/relevant person of proposed whereabouts and anticipated time of return.
9.
Establish communication and emergency response plans with manager and/or relevant
person.
10.
Take first aid kit and check contents are complete and in date.
8.2 Transporting quad bike
1.
Transport quad bike on a registered, roadworthy trailer or vehicle with the capacity to carry
the load safely.
2.
Select a suitable site for loading and unloading the quad bike. Check the capacity of the
ramps, make sure they are long enough and are securely in place.
3.
Remove quad bike loads and empty spray tanks before loading bike.

Unless stamped “CONTROLLED COPY” in RED, then when printed this document is uncontrolled.
4.
Do not exceed the maximum safe slope for loading the quad bike.
5.
Restraining the quad bike:
restrain in accordance with the movement restraint loads stipulated in the VicRoads
Load Restraint Guide
use appropriately rated tie down straps and ensure the straps are in good condition
secure the front and back of the quad bike and use cross over ties if transporting over a
long distance or over rough terrain
apply the quad bike park brake.
6.
Safely secure any other items so that they do not damage the quad bike in transit.
8.3 Quad bike operation
1.
Conduct a Site Safety Survey.
2.
Wear all relevant PPE.
3.
Always wear an approved helmet (AS 1698-2006 compliant) when operating a quad bike.
Make sure it is the right size, fits snugly and is fastened securely.
4.
Always sit astride the quad bike with feet on the footrests at all times.
5.
Only use the quad bike for authorised purposes.
6.
Do not carry passengers.
7.
Work in pairs where possible.
8.
Maintain a safe distance between other bikes and vehicles.
9.
Ride on made roads or tracks where possible.
10.
Drive according to the terrain, conditions, user experience and at a speed that enables
hazards or obstructions to be detected.
11.
Be mindful of changing conditions, weather, terrain, and other vehicle movements.
12.
Be aware of hazardous manual handling risks associated with riding a quad bike.
Ensure appropriate rest breaks are taken (every 2 hours) where continuous riding is
involved. Get off bike, walk around for a few minutes and stretch.
Eliminate need to carry fuel any distance to quad or use a smaller fuel can when
refueling.
Seek assistance if the quad bike becomes stuck or requires physical manoeuvring.
Wear gloves with a good grip, particularly in winter in cold conditions, to reduce the risk
of a manual handling injury when gripping the handle bar.
13.
Be aware the risk of rollover increases when traversing slopes, travelling at high speeds,
towing implements, carrying heavy or unstable loads and when tyres are under or unevenly
inflated.
14.
Do not operate the quad bike in the vicinity of radiant heat or near naked flames.
15.
Never leave the quad bike running unattended and remove keys when not in use.
16.
Follow the communication plan.

1.
Moderate speed when operating on slopes.
2.
Use low ratio gear when going up or down a slope.
3.
On side slopes lean and steer slightly up hill.
4.
Avoid slopes greater than 25 degrees where possible.
5.
When operating on steep slopes do not carry loads.
Spraying
1.
When carrying out tasks such as spraying maintain a slow speed and seek a path that
provides the best visibility of any potential obstruction or hazard.
2.
Be aware that liquid loads can cause sudden shifts to the centre of gravity of the bike when
riding over uneven terrain.
3.
Assess the terrain before riding over it.
4.
Check the area ahead for hazards such as rocks, tree stumps, burrows or branches.
5.
Ensure spray trailer is empty and minimum distance to quad to reduce exertion required
when hitching trailer.
Loads and towing
1.
Do not exceed the manufacturer’s load limitations and specifications.
2.
Only carry loads on the front and/or rear racks of the quad bike or on compliant
attachments.
3.
Always connect attachments to the towing point of the quad bike.
4.
Ensure loads, equipment and tools are stable and secured.
5.
Keep loads low.
6.
Use lower gear, reduce speed and allow a longer braking distance when carrying loads.
7.
Avoid hills and rough terrain.
Refuelling
1.
Allow quad bike to cool down before refuelling.
2.
Ensure there is no smoking, naked flames or other ignition sources within 30 metres.
3.
Make certain there is adequate ventilation.
4.
Use a funnel to prevent spillage.
8.4 Post-use
1.
Remove and secure keys.
2.
Report any damaged or faulty equipment.
3.
Report any incidents, hazards and near misses.
