If button B ispressedforlongerthan1 sec-
ond, thefunctionwillchangeoverautomati-

The memories
The systemisequipped with twoautomatic
memories:
A single journey memory (1) collects
thefollowingdatafromthetimetheignition
is switched onto when itis switched off:
Drivingtime,distancecovered and fuel
used.
From thisdata the averagedrivingspeed
and the averagefuelconsumption are
workedout.
If thejourney is resumed within twohours
ofswitchingofftheignition,thenewfigures
areautomaticallyincluded inthe calcula-
tion. Ifthe journey is interrupted for more
than two hours, the storedinformation is
automatically erased.
A total journey memory (2) storesthe
data fromanynumberofindividualjourneys
up toa total of99 hoursand 59 minutes
hoursdrivingtime, a distance of 9999 km
and 999litresoffuelconsumed.Thisdata is
used to work outthe consumption and
speed averages forallthe individual
journeys.
If one of thegivenfigures is exceeded, the
memory is erased and calculationstarts
from the beginningagain.Contrary tothe
single journeymemory,thismemory isnot
erased after a journeypause of morethan
twohours.
To call upthe data the memoriesarese-
lected by means ofthe switch A inthe
wiperlever:
1- Singlejourneymemory
2 - Totaljourneymemory
The followingdatacanbeobtainedfromthe
memories:
•Distancedriven
•Averagespeed
•Averagefuelconsumption
•Drivingtime
The amount of fuelused isnot indicated.
Erasing the memories
With the ignitionswitchedon,bothmem-
ories canbe erasedseparately in each
switchposition by pressingswitch A
passed theappropriatedetentposition to0
position for longerthanone second.
Ifthe battery is disconnected for any rea-
son, thestoredinformationisautomatically
erased.
Thedisplays
Min (driving time)
Memory 1 shows the drivingtimewhich
has elapsedsinceignitionwasswitchedon
orthememorycancelled is indicated - see
also "Singlejourneymemory".
Memory 2 showsthe total drivingtime for
all individualjourneysindicated - see"Total
journeymemory".
The maximumtimeinbothswitchpositions
is 99hours59minutes.Whenthisfigure is
exceeded theindicationstartsatzeroagain.
Miles (km) - Distance covered
The remarksmadeunder"Drivingtime"
also apply in principle to "Distancecov-
ered". Themaximumdistanceindicated is
9999 km or 6214miles.
MPH (km/h) - Average speed
The remarksmadeunder"Averagefuel
consumption" alsoapplyhere in principle.

Ambient temperature *•*
The measuringrange is from - 40degrees
C to+ 50°C.
When thevehicleisstationaryoronlymov-
ingveryslowly, the indicatedtemperature
could be slightlyhigherthan the actual
ambienttemperaturedue.toheatradiation
from the engine oruseofthe auxiliary
heater.
Atambienttemperatures of between+4°C
and -7°C, a snowflakesymbolwillalsoap-
pear in thedisplay(blackicewarning).
This symbolwillflash for approximately 5
seconds andwillremain lit until theambient
temperatureeitherrisesabove+4°Corfalls
below-7°C.
Warning
Ifthe ambient temperature read-
ing is used asanice warning, re-
member that ice can form onthe
road at temperatures of 4°C.
Afterswitching off theignitionthelastindi-
cated temperature is stored in memoryfor
about45minutes. If theignitionisswitched
onafter45minutesorthevehicleismoved
atabout 30km/h within the45 minute
period, a newup-to-datetemperaturewill
be displayed.
MPG (Itr/100km)- Current
fuel consumption
The displayshows the momentary con-
sumption at Itr/100 km.
The calculation is carried outat 30 m inter-
vals. Whenthevehicleisstationary,thelast
value displayed is stored.
Ifthe momentaryconsumptionfunction is
chosen afterswitching onthe engine, the
average consumption is shownforthe first
30-40metres.
Withthehelp of thesefigures, it ispossible
toadaptyourdrivingstyle tothe required
consumption.
MPG (Itr/100km)- Average
fuel consumption
The averageconsumption is indicated not
theactualconsumption at thetime of read-
ing.
The averagefuelconsumption is indicated,
afterswitchingontheignitionorerasingthe
memorybeing used, after a distance of
about100metres.Up to thispoint a dash
appears instead of a figure.Whenvehicle is
moving the indicatedvalue is up-dated
every 5 seconds.
Memory 1 shows the averagefuel con-
sumption for thesinglejourney.
Memory 2 shows the averageconsump-
tion obtainedduringallsinglejourneys - see
"Totaljourneymemory".
Note
The amount of fuelused is notindicated.

switchedon.Youcanalsoswitchbackto
the trip meterbypressingandholding
(longerthan0.5seconds)theresetbutton.
Thedisplay will thenberesetbytheVolk-
swagendealeraftertheservice work has
beencarriedout.
A print outofthe work carriedout will then
beplacedinyourvehiclewalletas proof.
Iftheserviceisnotperformedbya Volk-
swagendealer,thedisplaymustberesetas
follows:
•Withtheignitionswitchedoff,pressand
holdthe trip meterreset button belowthe
speedometer.
•Turntheknobtoresettheminutesonthe
digitalclocktothe right. Thedisplay will
then return tonormal.
Please note that you cannot fully
reset thethe service display in this
way.Youcan only reset it back to
the 15,000 kmservice.

Whenserviceinstalling a tachograph,
pleaserefer tothe instructions in Booklet
3.2under"Accessories,modifications and
replacement of parts".
In manyEuropeancountriestheinstallation
and useof a tachograph is obligatoryforthe
following vehicles:
1 - Vehiclesused for thecommercialtrans-
port of goodswith a permissibletotal
weightincludingtrailer or articulated
trailer ofmorethan 3.5 tons. Itis imma-
terial whetherthevehicleandthetrailer
oronlyone of thetwo is usedfor com-
mercialgoodstransport.
2 - Vehicleswhichaccording to their de-
sign andequipmentaresuitableforand
intendedtocarrymorethan 9 persons
including thedriver.

The ignitionmustbeswitchedon.
Inaddition,a warningsignalwillsoundon
some modelsifthevehicleisdrivenat
speeds higherthan6 km/hwiththehand-
brake on.
The brakesystemwarninglampdoesnot
come onwhenthehandbrakeisonforve-
hicles witha separatewarninglampfor
handbrake on.
Warning
Ifthe warning lamp doesnotgo
out after the handbrake isre-
leasedorcomeson while theve-
hicleisbeingdriven,the brake
fluid level inthereservoiristoo
low.Stopthevehicle,donot
drive onandcallfor expert as-
sistance.
Ifthe brake system warning lamp
andtheABSindicator lamp are
both on,the regulating function
oftheABSmay have failed.The
rear wheels mayblock when the
brakes areapplied.Thiscould
possibly lead the rear oftheve-
hicletoskid.
Drive carefully tothe next Volk-
swagen dealer and have the fault
corrected.
2- Alternator Q
The warninglampcomesonwhentheigni-
tionisswitchedon.Itmustgooutwhenthe
engine starts.
The alternatorisdrivenbya long-liferibbed
belt.
Ifthewarninglamplightsduringthe
journey,stop, switch off engine and
check ribbedbelt.
Warning
Please refer tothe warning notes
on page 60 before carryingout
any kind of work inthe engine
compartment.
Ifthewarninglampcomesonalthoughthe

Theimmobilizerpreventsunauthorizedper-
sonsusingyourvehicle.
Amicro-chip is located inthe head ofthe
keywhichautomaticallydeactivatestheim-

Thesystemis automaticallyactivatedwhen
theignition is switched off.
Theengine can thusonly be started
