DOORS
Cabdoors
From outside bothcabdoorscanonlybe
locked with thekeyA.Whenunlockingthe
lockingknobsgoup,whenlockingtheygo
down.
Bothdoorscanbelocked without usingthe
key.Todothispressdownthelocking
knob with thedooropenandoperatethe
triggerintheoutsidedoorhandleasthe
dooris closed.
Ifthedoor closes onitsownafterthelock-
ingknobhasbeendepressed,theknob
springsupautomaticallyso that youarenot
locked out with keyinsidethevehicle.
ThereardoorontheDoubleCabpick-upis
locked fromoutsideinthesamewayas
the front doors.
From inside thedoorcanbelockedby
pressing downthelockingknobsorby
pressing downtheinnerlocklever(Double
Cab).
As longastheknobsarepresseddownthe
doorscannotbeopenedfrominsideorout-
side.
Attention
Lockingthedoorscan prevent them
from opening inan unusual accident
situation.
Lockeddoorsalso prevent anyone
from entering without permission-
e.g.at traffic lights. However they
8 make it difficult for anyone toget into
the vehicle inan emergency.
Slidingdoor*

partmentfloor(A),toholdthedoorat90°,
andintotheholeonbumper(B)toholdthe
doorat180°.
Toenablethedoorstobeopened180°,the
togglesnearthelowerdoorhingesmust
bepulledupandthedoorcheckstraps
mustbedetached(B).
Note:
Whenthelightsareswitchedon,the
wingdoorsmustnotbeopenedsofar
becausethenthetaillightsareno
longervisible.

seen. Thissettingensuresthebestpossible
fieldofview,andinadditionitservesasan
instantcheckonthemirrorsetting.
Theexteriormirrorsareadjustedbymov-

Convex(curvedoutwards)mirrorsenlarge

SEAT BELTS
Ithasbeenproven that seatbeltsgivegood
protectioninaccidents.Inmostcountries
thereforethewearingofseatbeltsisre-
quiredbylaw.
Attention
The belts shouldbeputon before
every journey - even in town traffic.
This applies alsotothe rear seats.
Even pregnant women should always
wear a seat belt.
The routing ofthe belt isof major im-
portance tothe protective effect ofthe
belt.
Howthe belt shouldbe worn isde-
scribedonthe following pages.
How childrencanbecarriedsafelyinthe
vehicle isexplainedonpage15.
General notes
•The belt must notbe twisted.
•Twopersons (including children) must
never besecured with onebelt,Itispar-
ticularlydangeroustoputthebeltrounda
childsittingona person'slap.
•Thebeltshouldnotbewornoverhardor
breakable articles(glasses,ballpens,key
rings, pipes,etc.)becausethiscancause
injurytothebody.
• Loose, bulkyclothing(e.g.overcoats
over jackets)affectsthefitandfunctionof
thebelts.
•Thebeltmustnotbejammedanywhere
orrubonanysharpedges.
•Thelocktonguemayonlybeinserted
intothelockpartbelongingtotheappro-
priateseat,otherwisetheprotectiveeffect
is impaired.
•Theslotforthebelttonguemustnotbe
blocked with paperoranythingsimilar,
otherwisethetonguecannotengage
properly.
•Thebeltsmustbekeptcleanotherwise
theretractorsmaynotworkproperly(see
also "Care ofcar"section).
•Seatbeltswhichhavebecomedam-
aged orhavebeenstressedinanaccident
and stretchedmustberenewed- prefera-
blybya VolkswagenDealership.Thean-
chorages shouldbe checked.
•Beltscanbeserviceinstalledforall
seating positionsonvehiclesnot fitted with
beltsatthefactory.Theinstallationofbelts
should bedonebya VolkswagenDealer-
ship becausetheseworkshopshavethein-
formationrequiredtodothejobproperly.
•Insomeexportcountriesseatbelts
could beusedonwhichthefunctionsdiffer
fromthosementionedonthefollowing
pages.

Three-point inertia reel belts *

Sadden brakinghoweverwillcausethebelt

Jhe retractormechanismwillalsolockthe
beltwhenaccelerating,drivingdownsteep
5radientsorcorneringhard.
Thebackrestsofthe front seats must
notbeinclinedtoofartothe rear, other-
wise the belts areno longer effective.
Thelap part of belt must always fit
tightly. Pull belt tight ifnecessary.
Particularly inthecaseof pregnant
women thelap part ofthe belt should
beaslowacrossthepelvisaspossible
to ensure that nopressureis exerted on
theabdomen.
Putting belt on
Pull thetongueslowlyandsmoothlyacross
thechestandhipsandpushitintothelock
part fitted ontheseatuntiltongueengages
audibly(pulltocheck).
Theshoulder part ofthe belt must run
roughly acrossthe centre oftheshoul-
deras shown - onnoaccount against
the neck - andbe firmly in contact with
thebody.
On the front seatstheroutingoftheshoul-
der beltcanbealteredbyhavinga height
adjustableseat* or,theserviceinstallation
ofanadapter1'toaltertheheightofthebelt
anchorage. Detailscanbeobtainedfrom
Volkswagen Dealerships.
When installingsuchitemsattentionmustbe
paidtotherelevantlegalrequirements.In Ger-
manyforexample,suchitemsrequireofficial
legal approval.13

Takingthebeltoff
Toreleasethebelt,presstheorangecolour-
edbutton in thelock. The tonguewillthen
springout.
Pass the tonguetowards the door by hand
sothatretractorcan roll thebeltupproperly.
Aplasticbuttoninthebeltholdsthetongue
in a handyposition.
Toshortenbeltitis onlynecessary topull
thefreeend of belt.
Thesurplusbeltlength is takenup by mov-
ing the plasticslide.
Lapbelt*
Thebuckle is used inthe same wayason
thethree-pointinertiareelbelts.
Thebeltmustalwaysfittightlyacross
thepelvis.
Tolengthenbelt hold the tongue at right
angles to beltandpullbeltthrough tothe
required length - seeFig.
Thebelt is easier to adjust if tongue and
caparepressedtogether.

SAFETY FOR CHILDREN
Children under 12 years ofageshould

rending upon their ages, height and

On no account should babies or small
children travel onan adult's lap.

restprotected,inanaccident, with a safety
seat ora specialsafetycarrier.
•Experiencehasshown that babiesand
small childrenuptoabout3 years/18kgare
bestprotectedinchildseatsorsafetycar-
lierswheretheycanlieorsitfacingtherear
ofthevehicle.
•Childrenuptoabout7 yearsofage/25
<g,dependingontheirheight,aresafest

seat cushion.
Observe anystatutoryregulationstothe con-
trary.
•Childrenoverabout7 yearsofagemay
use thethreepointbeltsorthetwopoint
beltsprovided.Itisimportanttoensure that
thediagonalpartofthebelt fits overthe
centreoftheshoulder- anddoesnot
make contact with the neck. Thelappart
ofthebeltmustpassacrossthepelvisand
not over thechild'sstomach.
Ifthiscannotbeguaranteed,a safetycu-
shionshouldbeusedtoraisetheseating
position.
Whenusingthebeltthesection"Seat
belts"shouldalsobenoted.
Notethefollowingpointswhenpurchasing,
installingandusinga childrestraintsystem:
•Forsafetyreasonsalwaysusea restraint
systemwhichconformstotheinternational
safetystandardECER 44.Restraint sys-
tems that canbeconnectedtotheseat
beltsprovidedinthecararerecommended.
Iftheexistingbeltsaretooshort,onecan
use adapterbeltswhichareavailablefrom
Volkswagen Dealerships.
•Onlyusechildseatsorsafetycarriersof
thetypewhichhavea large, flat areain con-
tact with thecar'sseatupholstery.Child
seats whichhavefeetortubularframesand
no flat basecaneasilypenetrate into the
car's upholstery,andarethereforenotso
safe.
•Werecommend that childrestraint sys-
temsfromtheGenuineAccessory Prog-
rammeatVolkswagenDealershipsare
used. Underthename"Bobsy"restraint
systems forallagegroupsareavailable
there2'.Thesesystems fulfil alltherequire-
mentsmentionedandwerefurthermorede-
velopedandtestedbyusforuseinVolkswa-
genvehicles.
•Specialcaremustbetakenif childre-
straintsystemsareusedwhicharesecured
atthesamepointasthebeltsprovidedin
thevehicle.Onemustensure that thesecur-
ingboltsarescrewedfully into thethreaded
