Dead Level® Trench Drains
For Pre-Sloped Trench Drains

General Note: Please DO NOT separate channels from frames.
Channel and frame sections arrive to the jobsite preassembled in a specific
sequence to meet your project design requirements. They are not interchangeable
between sections and separating and reassembling them may cause installation
errors. If they accidentally become separated, please contact your Watts representative for technical
support with any questions.
1. Installation Diagram
1.1 Locate and save the installation diagram from the hardware box.
If you cannot find your installation diagram contact your Watts
representative for another copy.
2. Excavation
2.1 Excavate to allow a minimum 4" concrete pour below, and on both sides of
the trench drain and below a catch basin, if used.

3.5 Turn the catch basin over and set to appropriate line and grade per the
construction plans.
3.6 If a catch basin is not used, pipe connections are made to the bottom of the
channel, or to an end cap. Drill through the molded pipe hub with a 4" hole
saw or reciprocating saw, taking care not to rake the inside wall of the hub.
Make No Hub pipe connections with a suitable coupling (by others).
4. Layout
4.1 Refer to the installation diagram.
4.2 Working from the deepest outlet connection(s) back upstream, lay the trench
drain sections alongside the open trench per the labels on each section and
the installation diagram.
4.3 Each channel and frame section is also marked with arrows, indicating the
direction of flow. Confirm they are all pointing per the flow shown on the
installation diagram.
5. Rebar Anchoring & Leveling of Sections
5.1 Establish accurate line and grade reference and control using your preferred
method-e.g. string line, laser level, etc.
5.2 Starting from the outlet or catch basin, set the first structural frame and channel
section shown on the installation diagram on the desired control line along the
excavated trench.

3. Catch Basins & Piping Connections
3.1 Catch basins, if used, should be set first. If no catch basin is used
skip to step 3.6.
3.2 Using a reciprocating or hole saw, remove the circular pipe connection cutout(s)
where the basin will connect to discharge piping.
3.3 Invert the catch basin on a flat surface, and butt the section(s) shown on the
installation drawing against the pattern on the basin. Use a reciprocating saw
to remove the cutout on the basin.
3.4 With the cutout correctly removed, the channel tongue should slide inside the
hole in the basin, with the channel flange flush against basin's exterior wall (Fig. A).

5.5 Repeat steps 5.2 through 5.4 with the next section(s) shown on the installation
diagram until run is complete.
6. Connecting Sections
6.1 Confirm that all sections are in the order shown on the installation diagram, are
aligned with flow arrows pointing towards the outlet, and are on the desired
line and grade.
6.2 Connect channels and end caps through the top and bottom holes of flanges using 1" self-
tapping hex bolts (Fig. C).
6.3 Using frame connectors F-L, join the frames from the top using 3/8" hex bolt
(Fig. D).
6.4 Dead Level systems come with 1" channel convenience spacers to provide
flexibility for fine tuning to the job site conditions. These are intended to be
used as needed between any connection at the discretion of the installing
contractor. For every 20' of trench drain, 1 spacer and corresponding #10
are included.
6.5 It is usually unnecessary to seal channel joints in on-grade installations. If
corrosive solutions are present, or sealed joints are otherwise desired, use a
small bead of silicone caulk to seal joints.

5.3 Drive a minimum of 4 pieces 1/2" #4 rebar through the frame ears to support
each frame section. The rebar should reach a depth sufficient to provide
stability for the system, and prevent floating during the concrete pour. Threaded
steel rod may be substituted for rebar at the installers discretion.
5.4 Level the system at the desired grade by sliding the frame ears along the rebar.
Secure the frame to the rebar using 3/8" hex bolts (Fig. B).

6B. Spacers
6B.1 Dead Level systems are shipped with a CA-F 3/4" spacer. These spacers are provided for
filling in on long runs when heat can cause shrinkage in the channel connections. They
will fit both male and female ends.
6B.2 The CA-F is equipped with indentations for cutting to fit the top of the channel.
6B.3 One is provided for optional use every 20 feet, on 6" and on 12" ductile iron frames.

6C. Channel Retention Clips
6C.1 Dead Level Channel Retention Clips are provided for attaching the channels to the rebar.
6C.2 The channel retention clips provide stability in keeping the channel held tightly in place
while waiting for concrete to be poured.

7. Corners/Tees
7.1 If the system layout requires Corner/Tee Sections, follow the general installation guidelines.
7.2 Invert the Corner/Tee section on a flat surface, and use a reciprocating saw
to remove the appropriate cutout(s) on the section. (Be sure to note whether
the connecting channel(s) have a tongue or groove connection prior to
cutting the Corner/Tee, and remove a cutout with an opposite connection
type than the connecting channel).
7.3 With the cutout correctly removed, the tongue should slide inside the mating
groove, and the flanges should sit flush against each other (Fig. J).

8. Grate Installation
8.1 Grates should always be installed prior to the concrete pour. If used, install
Frame Guards prior to setting the grates (Fig. E).
7.4 Secure the channels and frames with the appropriate hardware (see 6.
Connection Sections)
Note: Dead Level corners or tees can also be formed with a Catch Basin (See
"Catch Basins & Piping Connections"), or underground piping. To pipe under-
ground terminate the trench drains a short distance from the corner joint. Attach
the appropriate endcaps, then connect the endcaps with 4" Sch 40 90's, tees,
and piping as required (Fig. J).

8.2 Install grates along the length of the trench, and secure with hex head or countersunk lock
bolts provided (Fig. F).
8.3 Position Construction Covers over the grates, with the flange between the grate
and frame (Fig. G).

9. Concrete Pour
9.1 Check the entire trench system for proper anchoring, alignment, and leveling,
and connections prior to pouring concrete. (Although the Dead Level frame-
anchored design dramatically reduces the risk of floating, a poorly anchored
system can shift during the pour).
9.2 Check the excavation to be sure a minimum of 4" of concrete can be poured
under, and on all sides of the channels.
9.3 Begin the concrete pour, vibrating the concrete adequately as it is placed, to
ensure complete filling of all potential voids around the trench.
9.4 The edge of the trench frame should be approx. 1/16" BELOW the top of the
concrete after finish troweling in order to keep the frame at or below grade
after the concrete is fully cured.
10. Final Inspection
10.1 After the concrete is dry, remove the construction covers, and retighten the
grate lockdowns. (If construction covers will not pry out easily, cut the cover,
and loosen the grate lockdown to free the sides of the cover).
10.2 Replace the covers to protect the installation during the rest of construction if
appropriate.
11. Alternative Installations: Retro-Fit or Suspended
11.1 Cut the existing slab or form a cavity which will enable a 4" concrete pour
below and around the Dead Level system.
11.2 Cut 2x4's at least 30" in length to span the cavity, and align 2x4's with the
cross bars in the trench frame. Drill 1/2" holes to secure the 2x4's to the
frame cross bars, using 3/8"-16x4-1/2" (minimum) bolts and washers
(Fig. J).
11.3 Insert a thin shim between 2x4's and the frame to ensure the trench
will sit slightly below finished grade after the pour.
11.4 Securely anchor the 2x4's to grade to prevent floating.
11.5 Once the concrete is initially set, remove 2x4's and complete unfinished
areas with concrete.
11.6 Install the grates & lockdowns.

Remarque générale: Veuillez NE PAS séparer les canaux des cadres.
Les sections de canal et de cadre sont livrées sur le chantier déjà assemblées dans une séquence
spécifique afin de répondre aux exigences de conception de votre projet. Les sections ne sont pas
interchangeables; les séparer et les réassembler peut entraîner des erreurs d’installation. Si, par
accident, elles étaient séparées, veuillez communiquer avec votre représentant Watts pour obtenir du
soutien technique et répondre à vos questions.
1. Schéma d’installation
1.1 Localisez et enregistrez le schéma d’installation provenant du contenant. Si vous ne trouvez
pas le schéma d’installation, veuillez communiquer avec votre représentant Watts pour
obtenir un autre exemplaire.
2. Excavation
2.1 Excavez de façon à permettre de couler au moins 4po (10cm) de béton, de béton dessous
et de chaque côté de la goulotte, et dessous le bassin collecteur, le cas échéant.

3.5 Retournez le bassin collecteur et fixez-le à la conduite correspondante, puis réglez selon les
plans de construction.
3.6 Si on n’utilise pas de bassin collecteur, les raccordements de la tuyauterie sont effectués
au bas du canal ou à un embout. Percez l’emboîtement de tuyau moulé avec une scie
cylindrique de 4po (10cm) ou une scie alternative en faisant attention à ne pas racler la
paroi intérieure de l’emboîtement. Faites des raccordements sans emboîtement de tuyau
avec un accouplement adéquat (par d’autres).
4. Disposition
4.1 Reportez-vous au schéma d’installation.
4.2 En travaillant depuis l’amont des raccordements les plus profonds, étendez les sections de
goulottes le long de la tranchée ouverte selon les étiquettes sur chaque section et le schéma
d’installation.
4.3 Chaque section de canal et de cadre est aussi marquée par des flèches, indiquant le sens
de l’écoulement. Vérifiez qu’elles pointent toutes selon l’écoulement indiqué sur le schéma
d’installation.
5. Barre d’ancrage et de nivellement des sections
5.1 Établissez une référence de ligne et de grade précise qui sera vérifiée par la méthode
préférée, soit à l’aide d’un cordeau, d’un niveau au laser ou autre.
5.2 En commençant depuis la sortie ou le bassin collecteur, posez la première section du cadre
structurel et du canal illustré sur le schéma d’installation sur la référence de ligne souhaitée le
long de la tranchée excavée.

3. Raccordements au bassin collecteur et à la tuyauterie
3.1 Les bassins collecteurs, le cas échéant, doivent d’abord être posés. Si aucun bassin
collecteur n’est utilisé, passez à l’étape 3.6.
3.2 À l’aide d’une scie alternative ou cylindrique, retirez la ou les découpes de raccordement de
tuyau circulaire à l’endroit du raccordement du bassin collecteur à la tuyauterie de sortie.
3.3 Inversez le bassin collecteur sur une surface plane et emmanchez la ou les sections illustrées
sur le dessin d’installation contre le motif du bassin. À l’aide d’une scie alternative, retirez les
découpes sur le bassin.
3.4 Une fois la découpe correctement retirée, la languette du canal devrait se glisser à l’intérieur
du trou du bassin, avec la bride du canal contre la paroi extérieure du bassin (Fig. A).

5.5 Répétez les étapes 5.2 à 5.4 pour la ou les prochaines sections illustrées sur le schéma
d’installation jusqu’à ce que le tronçon soit terminé.
6. Raccordement des sections
6.1 Confirmez que toutes les sections sont dans l’ordre indiqué sur le schéma d’installation,
qu’elles sont alignées avec les flèches d’écoulement vers la sortie et qu’elles sont à la ligne
et au grade désirés.
6.2 Raccordez les canaux et les embouts par les trous supérieurs et inférieurs des brides en
utilisant des boulons hexagonaux autotaraudants de 1po (2,54cm) (Fig. C).
6.3 À l’aide du connecteur de cadre F-L, joignez les cadres depuis le haut en utilisant un boulon
hexagonal 3/8po (0,95cm) (Fig. D).
6.4 Les systèmes Dead Level sont livrés avec de pratiques écarteurs de canaux de 1po
(2,54cm) afin d’offrir la flexibilité pour un ajustement minutieux selon les conditions du
chantier. Leur utilisation est prévue au besoin entre tout raccordement, à la discrétion de
l’entrepreneur effectuant l’installation. Pour chaque 20pi (6m) de goulotte, 1 écarteur et le
nº10 correspondant sont inclus.
6.5 Il n’est généralement pas nécessaire d’étanchéiser les joints de canaux sur les installations.
S’il y a présence de corrosion, ou que des joints étanches sont souhaités, utilisez un petit
ruban de mastic au silicone pour étanchéiser les joints.

5.3 Enfoncez au moins 4morceaux de 1/2po (1,27cm) de la barre d'armature nº4 à travers
les oreilles du cadre afin de soutenir chaque section du cadre. La barre d'armature devrait
atteindre une profondeur suffisante pour offrir de la stabilité au système et l’empêcher de
flotter lorsque le béton est coulé. On peut remplacer la barre d'armature par une tige en
acier vissée, à la discrétion des installateurs.
5.4 Mettez le système au grade souhaité en glissant les oreilles du cadre le long de la barre
d'armature. Fixez le cadre à la barre d'armature en utilisant des boulons hexagonaux de
3/8po (0,95cm) (Fig. B).

6A Raccordement des sections de centre
6A.1 Disposez les sections comme illustré ci-dessous.
6A.2 Coupez l’adaptateur CA-M afin qu’il s’adapte à la profondeur du bas de la section du
canal.

Le CA-M permettra aux deux sections mâles de s’adapter fermement ensemble.

6B. Espaceurs
6B.1 Les systèmes Dead Level sont expédiés avec un espaceur CA-F de 3/4po (2cm). Ces
espaceurs sont fournis pour combler les espaces sur les longues pistes où la chaleur peut
provoquer un rétrécissement des raccords des canaux. Ils conviennent aux extrémités
mâles et femelles.
6B.2 Le CA-F est doté d’encoches pour le découper et l’adapter à la partie supérieure du
canal.
6B.3 On en fournit un pour une utilisation facultative tous les 20pieds (6m), sur les cadres de
6po (15,2cm) et 12po (30,5cm) en fer ductile.

6C. Clips de retenue des canaux
6C.1 Les clips de retenue des canaux Dead Level sont fournis pour fixer les canaux à la barre
d’armature.
6C.2 Les clips de retenue des canaux assurent la stabilité en maintenant les canaux bien en
place jusqu’à ce que le béton soit coulé.
6C.3 L’utilisation des clips de retenue des canaux est facultative, et ils sont fournis pour votre
commodité et pour faciliter l’installation.

7. Coins et tés
7.1 Si la disposition du système nécessite des sections de coins et des tés, suivez les lignes
directrices d’installation.
7.2 Inversez la section coin et té sur une surface plane et servez-vous d’une scie alternative
pour supprimer la ou les découpes correspondantes sur la section. (Avant de couper
le coin et le té, veillez à noter si le ou les canaux de raccordement sont pourvus
d’un raccordement à languette ou à rainure, et retirez la découpe avec un type de
raccordement opposé au canal de raccordement.)
7.3 Une fois la découpe correctement retirée, la languette devrait glisser à l’intérieur de la
rainure correspondante, et les brides devraient se plaquer l’une contre l’autre (Fig. J).

8. Installation de la grille
8.1 Les grilles doivent toujours être installées avant de couler le béton. Le cas
échéant, installez les protections de cadre avant de poser les grilles (Fig. E).
7.4 Fixez les canaux et les cadres avec la quincaillerie appropriée (vous reporter à 6,
Sections des raccordements)
Remarque: les coins ou tés Dead Level peuvent aussi être formés avec un bassin
collecteur (vous reporter à «Raccordements au bassin collecteur et à la
tuyauterie») ou une tuyauterie souterraine. Pour une tuyauterie souterraine,
terminez les goulottes à une courte distance d’un joint de coin. Fixez les
embouts appropriés, puis raccordez les embouts avec des coudes de 90°
Sch 40 de 4po (10cm), des tés et la tuyauterie tel que requis (Fig. J).
