SInspecttheareatobecutbeforeeachuse.
Remove objects(rocks,broken glass,

merhead.
SKeepothersincludingchildren,animals,by-
standers,andhelpersatleast50feet(15me-
ters)away.Stopengineimmediatelyifyouare
approached.
SAlwayskeepengineontheright--handside
ofyourbody.
SHoldthe unit firmlywith both hands.
SKeepfirmfootingandbalance.Donotover-
reach.
SKeep blade ortrimmerhead below waist
level.
SDo notraise engine aboveyourwaist.
SKeep all partsofyourbodyawayfrom
blade,trimmerhead,andmufflerwhenen-
gine isrunning.
SCut fromyour right toyourleft.

Sphillips screwdriver.
ATTACHINGTHEHANDLEBAR
DANGER:Thebarrierportionofthehandlebar
mustbeinstalledasshowntoprovideabarrier
between operatorand the spinning blade.
SLocatethedecalonthehandlebar.Thisde-
calincludestwoarrows.Positionthehan-
dlebarwiththemountingbracketbetween
these arrows.
SPositionthebracketcoveroverthehandle-
bar.Againmakesurethehandlebarisbe-
tween the arrows.
SInsertscrewsand hand tighten only.Be
surethe handlebarisinstalled correctly;
then,tighteneachscrewsecurelywiththe
shorthexwrench.

ASSEMBLYOFSHOULDERSTRAP
WARNING:Propershoulderstrapandhan-
dlebaradjustmentsbeforestartingtheengine
arerequired.
STryonshoulderstrapandadjustforfitand
balancebeforestartingtheengineorbegin-
ningacutting operation.
SInsertyourrightarmandheadthroughthe
shoulderstrapandallowit torestonyour
leftshoulder.Makesurethedangersignis
on yourback and the hookistotheright
side ofyourwaist.
NOTE:Aone-halftwistisbuiltintheshoulder
straptoallowthestraptorestflatontheshoul-
der.
SAdjust the strap,allowing the hookto be
about6inchesbelowthe waist.
SFastenthestraphooktotheclamplocated
betweenthetriggerhandleandthemount-
ing block and lift the tooltothe operating
position.
CONFIGURINGYOUR UNIT
You can configureyourunitusing acutting
head forgrass and lightweeds,oraweed
bladeforcuttinggrass,weeds,andbrushup
to1/2inchindiameter.Toassembleyourunit,
gotothesectionforthedesiredconfiguration
and followthe instructions.

ATTACHINGTHE PLASTICSHIELD
AND TRIMMER HEAD
WARNING:The shieldmustbe properly
installed.Theshieldprovidespartialprotection
fromtheriskofthrownobjectstotheoperator
andothersandisequippedwithalinelimiter
whichcutsexcesslinetotheproperlength.The
linelimiter(onundersideofshield)issharpand
can cutyou.
SRemovewing nut fromshield.
SInsertbracketintosloton shield.
SPivotshielduntilboltpassesthroughholein
bracket.
STighten the wing nutsecurely.
SIf yourunithasa plastic coveroverthe
threadsonthethreadedshaft,removethe
covering to exposethe threads.
SBeforeinstalling the trimmerhead,make
surethedustcupandretainingwasherare
positionedonthegearboxasshownbelow.

SAlignholeinthedustcupwiththeholeinthe
sideofthegearboxbyrotatingthedustcup.
SInsertasmall screwdriverinto aligned
holes.Thiswillkeeptheshaftfromturning
whiletightening trimmerhead.

thread trimmerhead ontotheshaft inthe
directionshownonthedecal.Tightenuntil
secure.
NOTE:Theretainingwashermustbeposi-
tionedwiththeraisedsectionfacingtowardthe

NOTE:Ifyourunithasbeenassembledfor
trimmerheaduse,refertothesectionATTACH-
INGTHEPLASTICSHIELDANDTRIMMER
HEADandreversethestepstoremovethe
plastic shield and trimmerhead beforeyou
mountthemetalshieldandblade.Storethese
partsforfutureuse.Neverusethetrimmerhead
withthe metalblade installed.
ASSEMBLYOF THEMETALSHIELD
DANGER:Themetalshieldmustbeprop-
erlyinstalled on the toolanytimethe tool is
used withthe blade.The forwardtop ofthe
metalshieldhelpstoreducetheoccurrence
ofbladethrustwhichcancauseseriousinjury
such asamputation tothe operatororby-
standers.Failuretoinstall the shieldinthe
positionshowncanresultinseriousinjuryto
theoperator.Thelengthoftheshieldmustbe
alignedwiththelengthofthetube.Theblade
is sharp and can cutyou.Besuretowear
gloveswhileworking with blades.
SIf yourunithasa plastic coveroverthe
threadsontheshaft,removethecovering
to exposethe threads.
STurnunitover(threadsonshaftfacingup),
placethe metalshield overthe gearbox,
and align the screwholes.

SInsertthe4mountingscrewsthroughthe
bottomoftheshield.Threadthemintothe
gearbox.Tightenevenlyandsecurelywith
one of the hexwrenchesprovided.

teninghardwareotherthanthewashersand
nutsillustrated inthe following illustrations.
ThesepartsmustbeprovidedbyWeedEater,
andinstalledasshownbelow.Failuretouse
properpartscancausethebladetoflyoffand
seriouslyhurtyou orothers.
NOTE:Thedustcupandretainingwasherare
locatedonthegearboxandnotinthepartsbag.
SRemovetheretainerwasherfromthegear-
box,andleavethedustcuponthegearbox.
NOTE:Itmaybenecessarytoremovea
plasticprotectivecovering fromthe
threadedshaftbeforeremovingtheretain-
ing washer.

tendingfromthegearboxbetweenthedust
cup andthe retainingwasher.Makesure
the raised partof the retaining washeris
facingthegearbox,andtheraisedareafits
intothe holeinthe centerof the blade.

SNowplacethe cupped washerontothe
shaft. Makesurethe cupped side of the
washeristowardthe blade.

NOTE:Makesureallpartsareinplaceasillus-
trated,andthebladeissandwichedbetween
thedustcupandtheretainingwasher.There
shouldbenospacebetweenthebladeandthe
dustcup orthe retaining washer.
SAlign holein dustcup with holeinside of
gearboxbyrotating the blade.
SInsertasmall screwdriverinto aligned
holes.Thiswillkeeptheshaftfromturning
whiletightening the blade nut.

STightenbladenutfirmlywithawrenchwhile
holding screwdriverin position.
SRemovethe screwdriver.
STurn blade byhand. If the blade binds
againsttheshield,orappearstobeuneven,
thebladeisnotcentered,andyoumustre-
install.
NOTE:Toremoveblade,insertscrewdriver
intoalignedholes.Un-threadthenutandre-
moveparts.Besuretostorepartsandinstruc-
tionsforfuture use.
FUELYOURUNIT
Thisengineiscertifiedtooperateonunleaded
gasoline.Gasolinemustbemixedwithagood
quality2-cycleair-cooledengineoildesignedto
bemixedataratioof40:1.Poulan/WeedEater
brandoilisrecommended.(A40:1ratioisob-
tainedbymixing3.2ouncesofoilwith1gallonof
unleadedgasoline).Whenmixingfuelfollowthe
instructionsprintedonthecontainer.Always
readandfollowthesafetyrulesunderFUEL
SAFETY.
STARTING
STOPPINGYOUR ENGINE
SMovethe ON/STOPswitchtoSTOP.
SIf engine doesnotstop,movechoketo
the FULL CHOKE position.

WARNING:The trimmerhead will turn
whilestartingtheengine.Avoidanycontact
withthemuffler.Ahotmufflercancauseseri-
ousburns.
SRestengineandshieldonground,support-
ing trimmerhead off ground.

groundandeasilycontactsmaterialtobe
cut.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSFOR
USE WITHTRIMMER HEAD
Beforetrimming,bringenginetoaspeedsuffi-
cient tocutmaterialtobetrimmed.
Donotrunengineatahigherspeedthanneces-
sary.Thecuttinglinewillcutefficientlywhenthe
engineisrunatlessthanfullthrottle.Atlower
speeds,thereislessenginenoiseandvibration.
Thecuttinglinewilllastlongerandwillbeless
likelyto“weld”ontothe spool.
Iftrimmerheaddoesnotturnwhentheengineis
inoperation,makesurethetube isproperly
seated in engine shroud.
Alwaysreleasethethrottletriggerandallow
the engine toreturntoidlespeed whennot
cutting.
Tostop engine:
SMovethe switchtoSTOP.
SIf engine doesnotstop,movechoketo
the FULL CHOKE position.
ADVANCINGTHETRIMMERLINE
Trimmerlinewilladvanceapproximately2in.(5
cm)eachtimethebottomofthetrimmerheadis
tappedonthegroundwiththeenginerunningat
full throttle.
Themostefficientlinelengthisthemaximum
length allowed byline limiter.
Alwayskeeptheshieldinplacewhenthetool
isbeing operated.
ToAdvance Line:
SOperatethe engine at full throttle.
SHoldthetrimmerheadparalleltoandabove
the grassy area.
STap bottomof trimmerheadlightlyonthe
groundonetime.Approximately2in.(5cm)
ofline will be advanced with eachtap.A
blade on the shieldwill cut the line tothe
correctlength.
Alwaystapthetrimmerheadonagrassyarea.
Tappingonsurfacessuchasconcreteoras-
phaltcancauseexcessiveweartothetrimmer
head.
Iflineisworndownto2in.(5cm)orless,more
thanonetapwillberequiredtoobtainthemost
efficientline length.

USE WITHWEED BLADE
SBladeThrustisareactionthatonlyoccurs
whenusingabladedunit.Thisreactioncan
causeseriousinjurysuchasamputation.
Carefullystudythissection.Itisimportantthat
youunderstandwhatcausesbladethrust,
howyoucanreducethechanceofitsoccur-
ring,andhowyoucanremainincontrolofunit
ifblade thrustoccurs.
SWHATCAUSESBLADETHRUST--Blade
Thrustcanoccurwhenthespinningblade
contactsanobjectthatitdoesnotcut.This
contactcausesthebladetostopforaninstant
andthensuddenlymoveor“thrust”away
fromtheobjectthatwashit.The“thrusting”re-
actioncanbeviolentenoughtocausetheop-
eratortobepropelledinanydirectionandlose
controloftheunit.Theuncontrolledunitcan
causeseriousinjuryifthebladecontactsthe
operatororothers.
SWHENBLADETHRUSTOCCURS--
Blade thrustcan occurwithoutwarningif
the blade snags,stalls,orbinds.Thisis
morelikelytooccurinareaswhereitisdiffi-
culttoseethematerialbeingcut.Byusing
theunitproperly, theoccurrence ofblade
thrustwillbereducedandtheoperatorwill
be less likelytolosecontrol.
SCutonlygrass,weeds,andwoodybrushup
to1/2inchindiameterwiththeweedblade.
Donotletthebladecontactmaterialitcan-
notcutsuch as stumps,rocks, fences,
metal,etc.,orclustersofhard,woodybrush
having a diametergreaterthan 1/2inch.

SKeepthebladesharp.Adullbladeismore
likelytosnag and thrust.
SCutonlyatfullthrottle.Thebladewillhave
maximumcuttingpowerandislesslikelyto
bind orstall.
S“Feed”the blade deliberatelyand nottoo
rapidly.Thebladecanthrustawayifitisfed
too rapidly.
SCutonlyfromyourrighttoyourleft.Swing-
ing the unitinthe same direction asthe
blade spinsincreasesthe cutting action.
SUsetheshoulderstrapandkeepafirmgrip
ontheunitwithbothhands.Aproperlyad-
justed shoulderstrap will support the
weightof the unit, freeing yourarmsand
handstocontrolandguidethecuttingmo-
tion.
SKeep feetcomfortably spread apartand
bracedforapossiblesudden,rapidthrustof
unit.Donotoverreach.Keepfirmfootingand
balance.
