The following paragraphs provide detailed instructions for per-
forming these procedures.
-INSPECTIONNOTE-
If not previously inspected at the time of delivery, visually inspect
the unit for damages prior to installation. If the equipment has
been damaged in transit, immediately report the extent of the
damage to the transportation company and to Westell (see Part
6 for telephone number).
- PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENT -
Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack
is specifically designed for wet locations.
Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless
the telephone line has been disconnected at the network
interface.
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
3.1 Pre-Mounting Considerations
The K04 series should be installed by authorized personnel only.
In accordance with UL, this mounting enclosure is suitable for
mounting on concrete or other noncombustible surfaces only.
The DTWAK04L5 and DTWAK04L6 should be installed only
in a restricted access area (Dedicated equipment room, NEMA
4 enclosure, equipment closet or the like) in accordance with the
Articles 110-16, 110-17 and 110-18 of the National Electrical
Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 78.
3.1.1 Important Safety Instructions (Please Save)
When using your telephone/telecommunications equipment,
basic safety instructions should always be followed to reduce risk
of fire, electric shock and injury to person, including the follow-
ing:
A. Read and understand all instructions.
B. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on product.
C. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand or table: the
product may fall, causing serious damage to product.
D. Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are pro-
vided for ventilation. To protect it from overheating, these
openings must not be blocked or covered. This product should nev-
er be placed near or over a radiator or heat register. This product
should not be placed in a built-in installation unless proper ventila-
tion is provided.
E. This product should be operated only from the type of power
source indicated on the marking label.
F. Never push object of any kind into this product through cabinet
slots as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts
that could result in the risk of fire or electrical shock. Never spill liq-
uid of any kind on the product.
3.1.2 Gathering Tools and Supplies
The following tools and supplies are required to mount the K04.
SStandard blade and phillips screwdrivers
SPortable hand drill and proper size drill bits
3.2 Mounting the Assembly
3.2.1 Drywall-Type Surface Installations
When installing the assembly to a drywall-type surface, place it
against the wall in the desired location. Mark the left top and
bottom hole locations to accommodate the wall anchors to be
used. Next, open the 4-position mounting cover and locate and
mark the mounting hole location. Remove the assembly from
the wall and drill the appropriate size hole to accommodate the
wall anchor being used. Do not make the hole too large. The cor-
rect size hole is obtained when the anchor fits snugly into the
hole and against the wall.
Re-position the K04 against the wall and secure the top left cor-
ner first then the top mounting position inside the 4-position
mounting assembly. Complete the installation procedures by se-
curing the bottom portion of the backplate to the wall.
3.2.2 Solid Wood-Type Surface Installations
When installing the bracket to a solid wood-type surface (i.e. ply-
wood backboard, etc.), the #10 size wood screws (supplied) can
be used. Place the assembly against the wall in the desired loca-
tion. Install one wood screw into the left top hole location and
one screw into the right bottom hole location of the backplate.
Next, open the 4-position mounting assembly cover. Locate the
top right mounting hole and install the wood screw. Install the
last wood screw into the left bottom hole location of the back-
plate to secure the assembly against the wall.
-NOTE-
When installing the List 8 unit, remove the cover to provide easier
access to the mounting screw locations.
3.3 Power Connections
Refer to Figure 3 through Figure 7 for wiring details.
3.4 Chassis/Frame Ground Connections
A ground wire (#6 or larger) should be attached to the ground lug
located on the mounting plate or 4-slot mounting. For cell site ap-
plications where the K04 is installed in a weather-proof enclosure,
the K04 ground lug should be connected to the enclosure single
point ground bar that is then connected to the cell site ground
grid. Be sure to follow all local grounding practices and proce-
dures that would apply for installing any mounting assembly.
Power connections, if required, are made to the the 3-position
terminal block (TB9) located inside the 4-slot mounting assem-

terminal. Connect the other lead to the “+” (black) screw termi-
nal. Connect the green wire to the Chassis Ground screw
terminal. Westell offers a ---48Vdc, 1 Amp Wall Power Supply
(Model WPS4810) that can be purchased separately.
3.5 Facility/Network Interface Connections
Facility-side wiring connections can be made to either a 66-type
wiring block (List 1, 4, 7 or 8) or to screw terminals (List 5).
3.6 Customer Interface Connections
Customer-side wiring connections can be made to the 66-type
wiring block (List 1, 7 or 8) to RJ48C/S modular jacks (List 4, 5
or 8).
3.7 Module Installation
When all wiring is completed and secured, the module(s) may be
installed inside the assembly cover. Refer to the appropriate
practice for optioning and testing information for each module.
When testing is complete and the circuit is functioning correctly,
close and re-lock the cover (Except List 4 Option).
-CAUTION-
Use care when installing and removing modules - do not force
a module into place. If a module resists insertion, remove it
and check for obstructions in or near the module’s or shelf’s
connectors and mounting slots. The module may then be
carefully aligned and gently re-inserted.
4. TESTING & TROUBLESHOOTING
4.1 Testing
This equipment should not be field repaired. If the equipment
is suspected of being faulty, replace it with another unit, op-
tioned identically, and retest. If the replacement unit appears to
operate correctly, the original unit may be faulty and should be
returned to Westell for repair or replacement (Paragraph 6.2).
4.2 Troubleshooting
If trouble is encountered, verify all installer connections to the
assembly and check that the CO power fuse is not blown. Also
verify all module connections and option switch settings, and
verify the modules are making a positive connection with the
shelf connector. If trouble persists, replace the suspect unit and
