1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.1 Document Purpose
This document describes the Westell 28MK2QBK Mounting
Bracket Kit, shown in Figure 1. See Table 3 for information con-
cerning other models in the same product family.
- NOTE -
Hereafter, the 28MK2QBK Mounting Bracket Kit may be referred to as
the kit" or the 28MK2QBK."
1.2 Document Status
This Revision B practice updates Table 1 and Table 2. The Issue C
equipment updates the customer wiring (6-wire/pigtails). The Issue
B equipment included an Issue B 28MA204AK mounting assembly
and removed pin 1 from ground. Whenever this practice is updated,
the reason will be stated in this paragraph.
1.3 Product Purpose and Description
The 28MK2QBK is a kit which contains a wall-mountable bracket
to which is attached a 28MA204AK 200 MECHANICSr-type 4-slot
mounting and a partially-populated, 66-type, punch-down block for
wiring terminations.
1.4 Product Mounting
The 28MK2QBK is typically mounted on a wall.
1.5 Product Features
The 28MK2QBK offers the following features.

2. INSTALLATION
Installation includes inspecting the kit for damages, following prop-
er safety precautions, gathering all the necessary tools, mounting the
kit, making power and ground connections, and making line and
drop wiring connections, as described below.

- INSPECTION NOTE -
Visually inspect the unit for damages prior to installation. If damaged in
transit, immediately report the damage to the transportation company
and to Westell (see Part 4 for telephone number).
- PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENT -
Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is
specifically designed for wet locations.
Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the
telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
2.1 Following Safety Considerations
When using telephone/telecommunications equipment, always fol-
low basic safety instructions (to reduce risk of fire, electric shock and
injury to person), including the following:
A. Read and understand all instructions.
B. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on product.
C. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand or table: the
product may fall, causing serious damage to product.
D. This product should be operated only from the type of power source
indicated on the marking label.
E. Slots and openings in the assembly are provided for ventilation. To
protect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or
covered. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator
or heat register. This product should not be placed in a built-in
installation unless proper ventilation is provided.
F. Never push objects into this product through assembly slots as they
may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could re-
sult in fire or electrical shock. Never spill any liquid on the product.
2.2 Gathering Tools and Supplies
The following tools/supplies are recommended to mount the kit.
Hardware to affix the bracket to a wall or backboard is not included.

2.3 Mounting on a Wall
The kit can be directly mounted to a wall. The wall type may be
wood, drywall, or a noncombustible surface such as concrete. Follow
the instructions below to mount the kit on a wall.
1. Determine the mounted location on wall. Choose a location with
adequate lighting, unobstructed access for personnel, adequate
room for proper module and cable access, ventilation, equip-
ment access, as well as sufficient horizontal and vertical space
left between any multiple installations. The mounting bracket/
plate should be installed so that the module assembly is in an
upright (vertical) position.
2. Mark the mounting hole locations to be drilled. There are two
methods for marking the mounting hole locations.
SThe first method uses the mounting template, the last page
of this document, to mark the exact mounting hole loca-
tions. Tear off the last page of this document and tape/attach
it directly on the wall in the desired mounting location. Next,
using a hard, sharp, pointed tool, pierce a starter-hole
through the paper and into the wall by tapping on the
pointed tool with a hammer at the +" sign located within
each mounting hole outline or marking at each corner of the
template. Be sure starter holes are evident in the wall, then
remove the paper and discard.
SThe second method uses the kit plate itself as a template to
mark the holes. Lift and place the kit against the wall in the
desired mounting location then mark the exact mounting
hole locations to be drilled. Set aside the kit.
3. Drill holes. Drill appropriately-sized pilot holes (to accommo-
date the mounting screws or fasteners being used) at the marked
locations before the next step. The size of the holes and the fas-
tening hardware varies according to the wall type. Do not make
the holes too large. Mounting hardware is not included.
4. Partially install the mounting screws. Verify the mounting
screw head (or fastener/toggle bolt head) fits through the center
largest part of the mounting hole. Partially install all screws,
leaving approximately ¼-inch protruding for hanging the kit
from the keyhole slots.
5. Hang mounting baseplate on screws. Lift the kit again, align the
mounting holes on the plate with the partially-installed screws,
and hang the kit on the protruding screws.
6. Finish driving screws. While holding the kit in place, immedi-
ately finish driving all screws the remaining distance until flush
against the wall. Do not turn the screws too tight.
- CAUTION -
Improper grounding could be service affecting and cause service
interruptions.
- WARNING -
Risk of electric shock. Voltages up to 140 VDC (with reference to ground)
may be present on telecommunications circuits.
- GROUNDING CAUTION -
Always follow local safety precautions and standard operating proce-
dures for grounding the equipment when installing, upgrading, re-
pairing or maintaining equipment. All instructions/information here-
in is subordinate to local codes, operating procedures and practices.

2.4 Making Ground and Power Connections
2.4.1 Ground. Ground connections are made to the ground lug
located in the top right-hand corner of the kit plate. This will provide
a common ground for the mounting. All grounding practices apply
that would apply for mounting a single 28MA204AK assembly. For
applications requiring chassis ground to be connected to circuit
ground, an optional green wire strap is provided for installation be-
tween the GND lug and the GND position of the 28MA204AK TB1
power terminal block.
- CAUTION -
Never apply power until all installer connections are made.
2.4.2 Power. Power connections, if required, are made to the top
of the 28MA204AK mounting. Refer to the enclosed 28MA204AK
mounting practice for appropriate power connections to the mount-
ing.
2.5 Making Facility-Side Wiring Connections
Facility-side wiring connections are made to the top half of the 66-
type terminal block. Refer to Figure 3 and Table 1.
2.6 Making Customer-Side Wiring Connections
Customer connections are typically made to the 66-type block, but
also can be made to the 8-pin RJ48 jacks on the mounting.
S66-Block. If extending the RJ48 jack beyond the mounting, use
the bottom half of the 66-block, as shown in Figure 3, and refer
to Table 2 for correct circuit, wire, and terminal designations.
The block is factory pre-wired to four RJ48 pigtails, which are
provided and shipped factory-inserted into the four RJ48 jacks
at the bottom of the mounting. The 66 block provides both
RJ48C (for HDSL/NIU applications) and RJ48S (for DDS/
DST) connections. Always insure the jack switches at the
bottom of the mounting are set to the correct position per the
connections to the 66 block for RJ48C or RJ48S applications.
SRJ48 Jacks. Customer connections also can be made to the
RJ48 jacks located at the bottom of the mounting, as shown in
Figure 3. This is done by removing the RJ48 pigtails (provided
with the kit and pre-wired to the 66-block) and inserting custom-
er-supplied, separate, RJ48 cable plugs into the jacks. The
mounting also contains a jack switch for each jack, to set the jack
type to either RJ48C (for HDSL/NIU applications) or RJ48S
(for DDS/DST applications). The switches are factory preset to
the C" position. Insure the jack switches (at the bottom of the
mounting) are set to the proper position for the application. See
the mounting practice for details.
2.7 Installing the Plug-in Modules
Consult the module practice when installing modules. Before instal-
ling any module, set any option switches to the desired positions.
Align the module with the mounting card guides above and below
the unit and fully-insert into the slot connector.
CAUTION - STATIC-SENSITIVE
This product and the plug-in product installed inside the assembly
may contain static-sensitive components! Follow proper electrostatic
discharge procedures to maintain personal and equipment safety.
3. TESTING & TROUBLESHOOTING
The equipment should not be field repaired. If trouble occurs, check
that the CO power fuse is not blown and verify all installer connec-
tions, module connections, option switch settings, and that modules
have a positive connection with the shelf connectors. If trouble per-
sists, replace the suspect unit with another, optioned identically, and
retest. If the replacement operates correctly, the original may be
faulty and can be returned to Westell for repair or replacement
(Paragraph 5.2). These procedures are not designed to effect repairs
or modifications. Tests/repairs beyond those outlined herein or re-
placing a faulty unit are not recommended and may void a warranty.

5.2 Repair and Return. Westell repairs/replaces defective
Westell units without cost during the warranty period if the unit is
defective for any reason other than abuse, improper use or improper
installation. First request a Return Material Authorization (RMA)
number from Westell, then send the defective unit, freight prepaid,
and a brief problem description, to:

situation urgency. Westell repairs/replaces faulty equipment past
