INTRODUCTION
Senator/Liberty
is
anlnset LiveFuel-Effectfire.
ltuses moulded
ceramic
fibre
shapestosimulate
acoaleffect.The
burner
is
apatented
vacuum-formed
ceramic
component
which,
when
agas and
air
mixture
isinjected,heats
thecoals
andcreates
a uniquelyrealistic
glowing
heart
tothe
fuel-
bed.
Installation
ofthisappliancemust
beunderlaken
byacompetent
person,
and
in
accordancewith
the
InstallationManual.

ItislMPORTANTthatthecoalsareplaced
in
accordarrcewiththese
Instructions,toensurethebest
performance
ard visual effect.Under
no
circumstances

Senator

operation

no
apparent
reason,
theusershould
be
informed

stopusing
the

OFTHE
FIRE
Please
observethelmportant Notes

Please

instructions

first
time.
For
your
safetythisappliance
ismanulactured
with
aFlame
Sensing
Devicewhichwill
closeoffthe
gas
supply
- until
re-set
-in
theevent
ofany
failure
of
the
gas
supplyorflame.
Please
keep
these
instructionsinasafe
place.
The
GasControl
Thisfire
is
controlledby
a
four-position
gas
control
mounted
onthe
lowerright-hand
sideofthe
right
hand
column,
behind
aflush-fitting accessdoor.
In
additiontotheOFF
position,
there
isa PILOTLIGHT
position,
and
two
HEAT
CONTROL
positions
(Figure
1,
below)

ofthe
fireis
by
an
integral
piezo
generator
which,
uponoperation,
ignites
the
pilot
flame.The
main
burner
islitfrom
this
pilot.
As
asafety
feature
this
fireis
equipped
with
aflame-sensing
device
whichwill
shutoffthe
gas
supply
in
theeventthatthe
flameis
extinguished.
LightingthePilot
Ensure
thatthe
gas
supply
is
on.
Turn
the
gas
control
knob
to
the
OFF
position.
Depress
thecontrol
knob
andturnanticlockwiseuntilthe
PILOT
position
is
reached.This
action
will
allow
gas
to
flow
tothe
pilot,
andalsosimultaneously
operates
the
piezo
spark
generator
whichwill
ignitethe
pilot
flame.Keep
the
knob
depressed.
Observethe
pilot
flameis
alightby
viewing
the
lower
edgeofthefuel-bed
on
the
left-hand
side
ofthe
fire,
throughthecast
ironfretwork
abovethe
fender.

lf
the
pilot
flame
does
notlightfirst
time,repeat
thelighting
procedure
until
successful.
Oncethe
pilot
llame
has
becomeestablished,
keep
thecontrol
knob
depressed
for
at
least
1
0
seconds
to allowthe
flame-sensing
devicetoestablish.
When
thecontrol
knobisreleased
thepilot
flame
should
remain
established.
lfthe
pilot
flamefails
toestablish,
repeat
the
lighting
procedure,
this
time
keeping
the
knob
depressed
forlonger.
Lighting
the
main
burner
Oncethe
pilot
light
has
been
established,the
main
burnercanbelit bydepressing
andturning
the
control
knob
anticlockwisetotheMAXIMUM
position(Figure
1above)

Lighting
the
firewithatapel
In
theeventoffailure olthe
piezo
spark
generator,
the
pilot
flame
canbelit byataperorlong
spill,
inserted
lhrough
the
fretwork
abovethe
fendertoreach
the
pilot
light
assembly
(Figure
3).
Followthe
lighting
instructions
above
untilthe
pilot
flame
canbeestablished.

Please
note
that
the
fuel-bed
may
take
upto
1
5minutes
to
provide
a
realistic
glow,
andthatthe
llames
will
be
predominately
ofablue non-luminous
nature
untilthefirehas
completelyheated
uptoits
usual
operating
temperature.This
isnormal.
CLEANTNG
ENSURE
THATTHE
FIRE
HASBEEN
ALLOWED
TO
COOL
COMPLETELYBEFORE
ATTEMPTING
TO
CLEAN
ANY
SURFACE.
Painted
cast
iron
surfaces
(Classic
Blacknndels)
These
should
bedusted
regularlywith
ateatherduster,
orasoft
brushattachmentonavacuum
cleaner.
donot uselintd cloth
suchasdusters.
Porcelain
Enameled
surfaces
The
high
qualityporcelain
enamel
finish
is
designed
tobe
convenientand
easy
tomaintain
aswetl
asbeaulifultolook
at.
Useonly
asoftdrycloth
orsoft
brushas
necessary.
Do
not
use
water
or
other
liquid
onthese
surfaces.
Stubbornmarks
may
be
removed
by
lheuseofa
softclothand
a
non-abrasive
window
cleaning
liquid
orkitchen
appliance
creamspeciallylormulated
for
enameled
surlaces
(NOT
oven
cleaner)suchas
Hob
Brite.
Apply
this
cleanersparingly,
dry,
andbuffaway
alltraceswilh
a
new
duster
before
relighting
the
fire.
On
no
accountshould
anyabrasive
or
harsh
chemicalcleaner
beusedonthese
surfacesasthis
could
resultin
damage
tothe
finish.
Glass
In
normal
use,only
theoutside
ofthe
glass
shouldrequireregular
cleaning.The
glass
is
ahigh-
temperature
ceramicmaterial
and
shouldonlybe
cleaned
usingthefotlowingmethod.
Ensure
theapplianceis
completely
cool.
Wipe
the
glass
usingaacleandamp
clothand
polish
with
alint-free cloth.
Rinse
and
drythoroughlywith
asoft
paper
towel,andthen
polish
usingonlyanew duster.
Any
stubborn
depositscanberemoved
usingasoftdry
clothanda
proprietary
non-abrasive
ceramic
hob
cleaner.
Brass
The
brassembellishments
aresolidbrass
andthe
polished
finish
may
beaffected
by
heatfrom
the
fire,
andthe
atmospherewithin
lhe
home,
especiallyin
smokers'homes.
The
brass
shouldbe
onlybecleaned
usingasuitable
quality
metal
polish
(such
asBrassol andadry
soft
cloth,
following
the
manufacturer's
instructions.Take
carenot
to
let
the
polish
dryonany
othersurface.

CLEANINGINSIDE.
GLASS
SURFACES,
FUEL
BED,AND
FIREBOX
This
appliancemay
onlyrequire
occasionalattention
betweenannual
serviceintervals.However,
in
certain
conditions
the
glass,
firebox,
orfuel-bedmay
require
cleaningfrom
timetotime.This
isnormal.Note
that
discolouration
ofthefirebox
andceramicfuel
caused
bythe
effectsof
heat
and
flame,
is
also
perfectly
normal.
NOTE
Belore
undertaking
thelollowing
procedures,
ensure
that
the
firehas
been
turnedoff,
andhas
been
allowed
tocoolcompletely.
REMOVING
TTIEFIREFRONT
THECAST
IRON
FIREFRONT
IS
HEAVY
The
high
quality
cast-ironfirefront
(or
facia)
suppliedweighs
28kgs
(60lbs).

you
areetderty,infirm,
or
have
anydoubt
of
your
abilityto
easilyremove
this
component,
you
should
asksomeone
toassistwith
lifting
offand
on.
This
willhelp
avoid
damagetothefacia
component
ilself,
the
painted
or
enameledfinish,
thefireplace
surround
and
fireplace
components,
and
will
avoid
possible
injury
toyourself.
Like
theSenator
theLiberty
weighs
around2ukgs
(60lbs).
lfyou
have
anydoubt
ofyour
abitity
to
easilylift
orremove
this
component,
you
should
ask
someone
toassist.Due
tothe
curvednature
ofthe
casedesign
Liberty
requires
carefullifting
ontothe
heat
engine,ifyou
utilisethe
convection
airorfender
apertures
forlifting
becarefulnot
topass
your
fingers
through
the
aperturesdue
the
possibilty
ofpinching
when
offering
upto
theengine.
Please
readthese
instructions
carefully
before
attempting
toremovethe
facia
for
the
firsttime.
CAREFULLYremovethecast-ironfaciabyholding
atthesidesof
the
mantleand
litting
it
upwards
about
1"
andthen
outwards
-offthelocatinglugs
provided
in
the
chassis
lrame
(Figure
4)and
pulling
it
away
from
thechassisframe.
Removeit
toasafe
place.
Should
the
enamelbecome
chipped
duringthe
lifetime
ofthe
appliance,
atouch-upkitissupplied.Please
follow
theinstructions
onthelabel.

the
glasspanel
Having
removed
lhe
facia,
accessisnow
available
tothefire-viewing
area
of
the
chassisassembly.lt
isnow
possible
to
remove
the
ceramic
alass
panel
from
the
chassisto
gain
accessfor
cleaning.
Rotate
the
top
glass-retaining
screws
(Figure
5overleaf)
sothat
the
glass
will
slipaway
from
the
firebox
at
the
top,
and
may
then
be
lifted
up
andout
ofthe
lower
retaining
lugs.
Note
that
a
framing
channel
isfitted
tothe
glasspanel
and
will
protect
the
glass
edge
whilst
removed
from
the
chassis.

Gleaning
the
fuel-bed
PLEASE
HANDLEALL
CERAMIC
FUEL.BED
PARTSTENDERLY
Senator
usesa fuel-bedassemblywhichhas
been
proven
inmore
than
100,000
applications
lhroughouttheworld.Allthe
ceramic
parts
aresafetohandle,
andaredesigned
to
beeasily
replaced
bythe
consumer.
The
14individual
dresscoals
(Figure
6 below)should
beremoved,
noting
their
positions
tofacilitate
replacement,
andthen
placed
ona
piece
of
newspaper.
Any
deposits
canbecarefully
removedfrom
thesurface
of
the
coalsusingasoftdrybrush,such
as
apaint
brush.

Tore-assemble
thefuel-bed,follow
thesesimple
steps
Thefuel-bed
Thisfire
uses
hard
ceramic
moulded
two-piece
front
coals
which
shouldbe
handled
with
care.
Each
moulded
piece
should
beplaced
inposition
inturn,
with
the
'coal'
shapes
facing
out,
locatinginto
the
rectangular
slots
in
the
front
edgeof
the
burnerasshown
inFigure7above.
Gently
push
downwardsuntilthecoal
pieces
are
located
securely,andtheslottedarea
attheir
base
touches
theburnersurface.
Place
the
moulded
coal
matrix
(Figure
7
above)
on
theupperburnersurfaceand
locate
it
against
the
rear
ofthe
fireboxin
acentral
location.
Takefive
of
the
dresscoals
previously
removed,
placing
them
so
thatthe
morerealistic
surfaces
may
beseen
from
the
front
ofthe
fire,
andensuringtheybridgethespacebetweenthe
moulded
front
coal
pieces
(Figure
8overleaf)
and
themoulded
coal
matrix.

Replacing
the
glass
Take
the
glass
frame
assembly
andofferupcentrallytothe
fabricated
steel
firebox.Insert
thelower
corners
of
theframe
assembly
into
theU
channel
locations
on
the
firebox.
Line
uptheupper
location
points
and
with
thethumbscrews
provided
tighten
theupper
sectionoftheglass
assemblyonto
the
firebox.
To
ensureatight
seal
is
achieved,theuseofa
flatheaded
screwdriver
will
be
requiredin
order
to
beddown
a
new
seal.
Replacing
the
facia
lf
you
had
assistanceinremoving
the
facia,
ensure
furtherassistancewhenreplacing
this
heavyitem.
Carefullylift
the
facia
into
a
position
square
tothe
chassis
frame
ofthe
fire,
some
1"
abovethechassis
frame,
and
1"
(25mm)
awaytrom
thelocators
provided
in
thesheet
metal
ofthe
frame
(Figure
11,
below).

Holding
the
facia
about
1"
abovethe
height
ofthe
chassis
frame,locate
the
fixing
lugs
cast
into
the
rear
of
the
facia
into
the
slots
provided
in
the
chassis
frame,
andcarefully
lower
the
facia
ontothe
hearth
ensuring
that
no
damageaccurs
tothe
finish
ofthe
facia,
ortothe hearthmaterial.
All
fourfacia
lugs
shouldlocateinto
theslots,andthetacia
shouldsitsquarelyon
the
hearth,
locating
against
the
vertical
surfaceofthefireplace.
