Ifitisyourintentiontouseyour
newXSScubaregulatorwithEAN
upto40%O2,itiscriticalthatyou
maintaintheinternalcleanliness
ofyourregulator(seesectionon
CareandMaintenance).
Ifitisyourintentiontouseyour
regulatorinterchangeablywith
breathingair,thebreathingair
shouldbe“oxygen-compatible”
or“hyper-ltered”whereasthe
condensedhydrocarbonsinthe

Standardcompressedbreathing
air,oftenreferredtoas“Grade
E”doesnotnecessarilymeet
thiscriterion.GradeEbreathing
airmaycontaincertainlevelsof
hydrocarbons,includingtraces
ofcompressoroils,thatwhilenot
consideredharmfultobreathe,
canposeariskinthepresenceof
elevatedoxygencontent.
Passinghydrocarbonsthrough
avalveandregulatorcreates
acumulativeeffectwherethe
hydrocarbonsbuildupovertime
alongtheinternalpassageways
oftheequipment.Whenthese
hydrocarbonscomeincontact
withhighpressureoxygen
enrichedair,theycanposea
veryrealhazardthatcanleadto
combustion.
Therefore,ifaregulatorhasbeen
usedwithGradeEbreathingair,
itshouldreceiveoverhaulservice,
includinghydrocarboncleaning,
priortobeingputbackintonitrox
service.
Althoughsecondstage
componentsarenotsubjected
tohighpressureEAN,XSScuba
recommendsthatthesame
guidelinesapply.

Youwillnoticealeverontheside
ofthesecondstageoppositethe
hoseconnection.Movingthis
leverbackandforthchangesthe
directionoftheairinternallyin
thesecondstage.Whenpulled
back,towardsyourmouth,to
theplus“+”setting,theairow
createsa“venturi”effectwhich
createsaniceboostinbreathing
performance.Whenmoved
forward,awayfromthemouth,
totheminus“-”setting,the
venturieffectisinterruptedwhich
increasesyourbreathingeffort.
Thedeeperyougo,themore
noticeablethisbecomes.
Itisimportanttonote,thatwhen
theleverisontheplus“+”setting
andtheregulatorisoutofyour
mouth,thesecondstagecanget
bumpedandgointoafreeow
condition.Shouldthishappen,just
movethelevertotheminus“-”
positionandthefreeowwillstop.
NOTE:Thesimplestwayto
usethisperformancefeatureis
toplacetheleverintheplus“+”
positionwhentheregulatorisin
yourmouthandmoveittothe
minus“–”positionwhenitisout
ofyourmouth.

TheInhalationControlKnob,
locatednexttotheventurilever
oncertainmodelsecondstages,
adjuststheeffortrequiredto
initiatetheinhalationcycle.Asitis
turnedin(clockwise),theopening
effortwillincrease.Thiswillmake
thesecondstagelesssensitive
tosuddenchangesinambient
pressure.
Turningtheknob“out”(counter-
clockwise)willdecreasethe
openingefforttomakebreathing
easier.Sometimesaslighthissing
maybeheardinthissetting.Ifthis
occurs,turntheknobclockwise
justenoughtostopthehissing.

TheInhalationControlKnob
isparticularlyusefulatdeeper
depths,orinvariableconditions
thataffecttheopeningeffortof
thesecondstage,suchasfacing
intostrongcurrentsorwhileusing
adiverpropulsionvehicle(DPV).
Itwillalsoallowcompensation
foradifferenceinthehydrostatic
pressurebetweenyoursecond
stageandthecenterofyour
lungs,suchaswhenyouarein
ahead-downposition.Youcan
usetheInhalationControlKnob
totuneyourregulatortomaintain
itspeakperformancethroughout
thecourseofyourdive,or
youcanleaveitsetinitsmid-
rangepositionanddivewithas
youwouldanynon-adjustable
secondstage.

dust,debrisormoisture
Inspecttheconditionofthe
cylindervalveo-ring.Replaceif
damagedormissing.
Placetheregulator’sconnection
yokeoverthevalvesothatthe
inletttingoftheregulatorseats
againstthevalveo-ringANDthe
primarysecondstagehoseroutes
overthediversrightshoulder.
Holdinplacewhileyouturn
theyokescrewclockwiseuntil
snug.Conrmthattheyokescrew
engagesthesmalldimpleonthe
backofthecylindervalve.
CAUTION:Over-tighteningthe
regulatoronthevalvecancause
damageandmakeitdifcultto
removetheregulatorafterthedive.
Itisthevalveo-ringthatformsthe
seal,notexcessivetighteningof
theyokescrew.
Placetheventurileverinthe
minus“-”position.Turnthe
inhalationcontrolknob,if
applicable,clockwise,alltheway
inward.
Makesurethatyourpressure
gaugeorcomputerfacesaway
fromyou.

Depressthepurgebuttonbriey
toensuresufcientairowandto
blowoutanydustordebris.
Placetheregulatorinyourmouth.
Movetheventurilevertothe
plus“+”position.Ifapplicable,
turntheinhalationcontrolknob
counterclockwise,allthewayout.
Thenturnit,clockwise,backinuntil
theregulatorbreathescomfortably
foryouwithoutbeingoverly
sensitive.Inhaleandexhaleslowly
anddeeply.Theregulatorshould
breatheeasilywithoutnoticeable
resistance.
Pressurizetheregulatorby
SLOWLYopeningthecylinder
valve.Continuetoopenthevalve
allthewayandthenbacka
halfturn.
Listenforleaksnearbothstages
oftheregulator,anyaccessories
andalongthelengthofthehoses.
Ifthereisairleakingbetween
theregulatorandthecylinder
valve,followtheprocedures
forremovingtheregulatorfrom
thevalve.Replacethevalve
o-ringandreseattheregulator.
Ifleakagepersists,returnthe
regulatorwithcylindertoyour
localXSScubaDealerfor
inspectionandrepair.

Diving
Ifyouaremakinganentryor
aresurfaceswimmingwiththe
regulatoroutofyourmouth,be
suretosettheventurileverinthe
minus“-”positionandhavethe
inhalationcontrolknobturnedall
thewayin.Onceyouplacethe
regulatorintoyourmouth,move
theventurilevertotheplus“+”for
theremainderofthedive.Where
yousettheinhalationcontrolknob
willbebaseduponenvironmental
conditionsaswellasyoupersonal
preference.Seeearliersectionon
theInhalationControlKnob.
Goahead,enjoyyourdive.Ifyou
don’thavetothinkaboutyour
regulatorduringthedive,thenwe
succeeded!
Asareminder,thisregulatorisnot
designedforcoldwateruse
(<50°F/10°C)
WARNING:Thisregulatoris
designedforuseinwaterthatis
50°F/10°Candabove.Useofthis
regulatorinwatertemperatures
below50°F/10°Ccouldresult
intheregulatorfreezingandnot
performingasdesigned.
Post Dive Procedure
NOTE:Iffreshwaterisreadily
available,rinseyourregulator
thoroughlypriortodepressurizing
it.Thiswillpreventwaterfrom
enteringtherststage.
NOTE:Whenyouremovethe

Shutoffthecylindergassupplyby
turningthecylindervalvehandwheel
untilsnug.

theregulatorandhoses.Keepthe
purgebuttonpressedinuntilnomore
gascanbeheardexitingtheregulator.
Turntheyokescrewcounterclockwise
toloosentheregulatoronthecylinder
valve.Whileremovingtheregulator,
keeptherststageinvertedwiththe
yokescrewfacingdown.Thiswill
preventwaterdropsforgoinginthe
inletareawherethelterislocated.

Care and Maintenance
Assoonaspossibleafterthedive,
itisimportanttosoakorrinseyour
regulatorinfreshwater.Warm
water(<120°F/49°C)isbest.
Thebestmethodistosoakit
inatubofwaterwhileitisstill
connectedtothecylinderand
pressurized.Thiskeepsrinse
wateroutofthehosesandthe
rststage.
Ifthisisnotpossible,then
youmaysoakitwhileitis
depressurizedaslongasyou
followthesesteps:
•Ensurethatthedustcapis
makingawatertightsealover
theregulator’sinlettting.
•Ifyourregulatorhasan
inhalationcontrolknob,besure
toturnitclockwise,allthe
wayin.
•DONOTdepressthepurge
button.Thiswillallowwater
toentertheregulatorandmake
itswaydownthehosetothe
rststage.
•Keepthesecondstagelower
thantherststage.
Whilerinsing,movetheventuri
leverbackandforthseveral
timestoremoveanysalt,sandor
contaminants.

regulatoriscompletelydry,you
maystoreitinaregulatorboxor
bag.
CAUTION:DONOTstore
yourregulatorinahotenvironment
ornearanelectricmotor,which
producesozone.Prolonged
exposuretoheat,ozone,chlorine
fumesorultravioletrayscancause
prematuredegradationofyour
regulator’ssoftpartsandhoses.
Ifsoakingisnotpossible,then,as
aminimum,rinsewithagarden
hose.Donotuseahighpressure
nozzleasthiscouldcompromise
the2ndstageinternalparts.Be
suretorinsetheinsideofthe
secondstageviathemouthpiece
aswellastheventurilever.If
applicable,besuretodirect
freshwaterintotheambient
pressureportsontherststage
toushoutthemainspringcavity.
Afterrinsing,shakeanyresidual
wateroutofthesecondstage.
Hangtheregulatorbytherst
stageinacool,dryenvironment,
outofdirectsunlight.Turnthe
inhalationcontrolknoballthe
wayout,counterclockwise,to
lessenspringtensiononthe2nd

hardonaregulatorassealsand

XSScubaDealeratleastoncea
year.Yourregulatormayrequire
morefrequentservicedepending
ontheamountofuseitreceives
andthetypeofenvironmental
conditionsthatitissubjectedto.
Iftheregulatorisusedforrental
ortrainingpurposes,itwillrequire
factoryprescribedserviceevery
threetosixmonths.Chlorinated
swimmingpoolwaterisan
especiallydamagingenvironment
forscubaequipment,duetothe
highlevelsofchlorineandpH
balancingchemicalsthatcancause
certaincomponentstorapidly
deteriorate.
