explanations of all installation, removal, disassembly, assembly, repair and check procedures are laid
out with the individual steps in sequential order.

OUTLINE OF THE Fl SYSTEM
The ma in funct ion of a fuel supp ly system is to provide fuel to the comb ust ion chamber at the opt i mum
air-fuel ratio in accordance with the engine operat ing co nd i ti ons and the atmosp he ric temperature. In
the conventional carburetor system, t
he air-fuel ratio of the mix ture tha t is supplied to t he com bustion
chamber is created by the vol ume of t he int ake air and t he fuel tha t is me t ered by the j et used in t he
res pec tive carburetor.
Despite t
he sam e volume of intake air, t he fuel vol ume requirement var ies by t he engine operating con-
dit i ons , such as acceleration, dec eleration, or ope rating under a he avyload. Carburetors t hat meter t he
fuel thro ug h the use of je ts haveb een prov ided with various auxili ary d ev ices, sothat an optimum air-fu-
el ratio
can be ach ieved to accommodate the constant cha nges in the ope rati ng conditions of th e en-
gine.
As the requirements f
or the engine to de li ver more performance and cle aner exhaust gases increase,
it b
eco mes ne cessary to con trol t he air-fuel r at io in a more precise a nd finely tuned manner. To accom-
modate this need,this model has a do pted an electronica ll y controlled fuel injection (Fl) system, inplace
of the conventional carburetor system. Th is system can achieve an opt imum air-fuel rat io requ ir ed by
the eng
ine at all times by usi ng a microprocessor that regulates the fuel injection vol um e accordi ng to
the engine operating conditions
detec ted by va ri ous sensors.
The adoption of t he Fl syst em has resulted in a highly precise fuel suppl y, improved engine response,
better f
uel economy, and reduced exhaust em i ss ions.

Fl SYS TEM
The fuel pump delivers f ue l to the fuel injector via the fuel filter. The pressure regulator maintains the
fuelpressu re that isappliedto the fuel injectoratacertain leve l. Accordingly,whentheenergizingsignal
from the ECU energizes the fuel injector, t he fuel passage opens, causing t he fuel to be injected in to
the intake ma nifold on ly during the time the passage remain open.
Therefore,the longerthe length of time the fuel in jector is energized (injection duration), the greater the
vo l ume of fuelthat is supplied. Conversel y, the shortert he length of time the fuel injector is energized
(injection dur at ion), the lesser the volume of fuel that is supp li ed.
Thei nj ection du ra tion and the injection timing are con tr olled by the ECU. Signalsthat are input fr om the
throttle position sensor, accelerator position sensor, coo lant temperature sensor, lean angle sensor,
crankshaftpositionsensor, intakeairpressuresensor,
in takeair temperaturesensor, speedsensorand
02 sensor enable the ECU to determine the injection durati on . The injection timing is determined
through the signals from the crankshaft position sensor. As a result, the volume of fuel that is required
by the engine can be supplied at all times in accordance with the driving conditions.

any setting changes to the multi-function
meter unit. Changing settings while riding
can distract the operator and Increase the
risk of an accident.

To switch the speedometer and multi-function
displays between kilometers and miles, press
the "SELECT" button for
at least one second.

The tachometer allows the rider to monitor the
engine speed and keep it within the ideal power
range.
When the key is turned to "ON", the tachometer
will sweep across the r/min range and then re-
turn
to zero r/min inorderto testtheelectrical cir-
cuit.

The clock displays when the key is turned to
"ON". In addition, the clock can be displayed for
10 seconds by pus hi ng t he "SELECT' button
when the main
sw itch is in the " OFP ', "L OCK" or
"p~ " position.

2. Push t he "SELECT" button and "RESET' but-
ton together f
or at least two seconds.

This function allows you to adjust the br ig htness
of the multi-function meter un it panel to suit the
outside lighting conditions.
To adjust the brightness
1. Turn the key to "OFF".
2. While pushing the "SELECT" button, tu rn t he

Yamaha developed the YCC-T system empl oy ing the most advanced electronic control technologies.
Electronic control throttle syst ems havebeen used on automob il es , but Yamaha has developed a fast-
er, more compact system specifi ca lly for the needs of a sports motorcycle. The Yamaha-developed
system has a high-speed ca l cu l at ing capacity that produces comput at ions of ru nning co nditions every
1/1 OOOth of a second.
The YCC-T system is designed to respond to t he throttle action of the ri der by having the ECU instan-
taneously calc ul ate the ideal throttle valve opening and generate signals to operate the motor-driven
throttle va lves and thus ac tively con tr ol the intake air vo lume.
TheECU contains two CPUs
wit h a capaci ty about five times that of co nventional uni ts , making it pos·
sible forthesystem to respond extremely quick ly to the s li ghtest ad justments madeby the rider. In par-
ticular, optimized co ntrol of the throttle va lve opening provides the op timum volume of intake air for
easy-to-use torque, even in a high-revving engine.
