Safety precautions:
Operating and maintenance personnel should refer to ICAO Airport Services Manual
Part 9, “Airport Maintenance Practices” and to FAA Advisory Circular AC 150/5340-26
“Maintenance of Airport Visual Aid Facilities” for instruction on safety precautions.
Airport personnel must always observe safety regulations. Our equipment has been
designed and manufactured to allow safe and secure operation, however, the following
rules must be strictly observed.
Keep away from live circuits
Operating and maintenance manual must always follow the safety regulations.
Do not change lamps or components or make adjustments to equipment when the light
circuit is switched on.
See FAAAdvisory Circular AC 150/5340-26 concerning safety.
Resuscitation
Operating and maintenance personnel should get acquainted with the resuscitation
techniques described in the First Aid Instruction Manual issued by the Red Cross
Organization or similar.

YOUYANG Airport Lighting Equipment Inc. guarantees that the performance of
the product described in this manual meets the requirements of ICAO Annex 14
volume 1 and FAA specification AC 150/5345-46, provided the equipment has
been purchased from YOUYANG or one of its official distributor.
YOUYANG Airport Lighting Equipment Inc warrants the products against any
defect in design, material or workmanship, for a period of two (2) year from the
date of delivery to the original purchaser. Within the frame of this warranty
YOUYANG accept to replace the defective item free of charge, ex works.
Operational failure or breakage resulting from lamp burnt out, improper
maintenance or installation, damage due to runway maintenance equipment,
snow ploughs or aircraft arresting gear hooks are not considered as result of
proper use and is beyond the scope of the warranty. The warranty does not
cover glassware, prisms, lens, filters and lamps.
The above constitutes the limit of YOUYANG’s liabilities in connection with the
equipment covered by this manual.

1. General
The PAPI units to be provided shall comply with ICAO photometric performances required
for a Precision Approach Path Indicator system except when otherwise stated herein.
PAPI system or APAPI system give pilots visual information for safe approach procedure of
aircraft. PAPI system is composed of 4 PAPI units and APAPI comprises of 2 PAPI units.
The system is placed on the left of the runway aimed outward into the approach zone on a
line parallel to the runway. Each beam of the unit has white color on upper side, red color on
lower side and transition sector between red and white color. The transition sector is very
accurate because that does not exceed 3 minutes of arc over the full beam width.

4.2 Photometric characteristics
The photometric characteristics of lights are in accordance with the requirement of ICAO
and FAA specification as follows.

4.3 Mechanical characteristics
The mechanical characteristics are as follows.

4.4 Construction quality
4.4.1 A single lightweight aluminum box housing all the optical components
4.4.2 A lightweight single cover with padlockable latches
4.4.3 The optical groups shall consist each of:
- Tungsten halogen lamp, prefocused
- 99.99% pure aluminum reflector, polished and protected by anodic oxidation.
- Through-colored red glass filter
- Two high quality lenses in each beam to provide a constant transition zone which will
not overpass 3 minutes of arc in any case.
- Independent modules (one per channel) will not be permitted. Only (three lamp) single
unit shall be accepted.
4.4.4 A removable front glass in order to protect the lenses. No dispersive glass shall be
set in the light path.
4.4.5 Gaskets for cover and front glass.
4.4.6 Four adjustable mounting legs allowing the accurate setting of the unit. These legs
will allow the adjustment in elevation of the transition zone betw. They will also allow
the adjustment of the eight of the axis of the beam above the mounting concrete slab.
4.4.7 Breakable couplings with 2 inch 11 TPI thread and mounting flanges.

4.4.8 For each lamp one feeding cable made of synthetic rubber insulated, (AWG
12)flexible cable, polychloroprene sheathed with factory moulded 2 pole plug in
accordance with FAA specification L-823, fig.1.a, and protected by a stainless steel
reinforced flexible conduit for its run outside the PAPI unit, down to the transformer
housing base cover.
4.4.9 One special steel cover plate of sufficient diameter with glands to accommodate the
feeder cable flexible conduits and suitable for mounting on top of a galvanized steel
base.
4.4.10 The PAPI unit shall be compact in order to afford a minimum drag to jet blast and
withstand minimum 170Km/h wind force
4.4.11 The unit shall be fully corrosion proof. The housing, optical frame, cover, breakable
coupling, flange, and cover plate shall be protected by a stove baked polyester paint
deposited by an electrostatic process.
4.4.12All screws, nuts and hardware shall be made of plain stainless steel and all
elements that have to be removed to service the unit shall be captive.
4.4.13 The stainless steel cover closing latches shall be padlockable.
4.4.14 The use of special instrument or bench for resetting the beam after reflector and it
shall be possible to relamp the fitting or to change the red filter without using any tool.
4.4.15 relamping , filter or lens replacement is not permitted.
4.4.16 The unit will be completely dusttight and closed.
4.4.17 Drainage special holes will be provided for the eventual condensation water.
4.4.18 Lamp changing does not require calibration nor adjustment of the unit. Maintenance
operations are strictly reduced to relamping on site in matter of minutes.
4.6 Mounting
The PAPI unit shall be secured by means of its breakable couplings and flanges on a
concrete slab.
Its feeding cables mechanically protected shall run down into a transformer housing base
cast in the concrete foundation behind it.
4.7 Lamps
The lights will comply with the specifications indicated, with three prefocused max. 200W
6.6A lamps.

5. Installation
5.1 Location
The location of PAPI is as per ICAO as following figure 5-1. The distance of PAPI system
from the threshold will be determined by approach slope angle, possible obstacle in
approach zone, accordance ILS system, most demanding aircraft...etc. For more
information, please refer to related ICAO regulation.

5.1.1 The system shall be located on the left side of the runway from the approach end but
in the event of site problem, such as conflicts with runways or taxiways, that may be
located the right side of the runway. As for signal display of the system for pilot, please
refer to above Fig. 5-1.
5.2 Mounting
5.2.1 The following concrete plinth is recommended. Light unit with frangible coupling shall
be constructed on concrete slab (concrete plinth) having ground level. The
dimensional information of concrete plinth and location of base plate of PAPI unit is as
following Fig. 5-2. But, please note this can be changed according to local site
situation.

5.2.2 Mounting method
1) According to Fig. 5-2 mark position of base plate and anchor bolt on concrete plinth.
2) Make holes for 16 anchor bolts on concrete plinth.
3) Mount anchor bolts on concrete plinth.
4) Fix base plate on anchor bolt by using washer and nuts. Please refer to Fig. 5-4 and 5-5.
5) Fix breakable coupling to base plate.
6) Mount anchoring leg in the breakable coupling and adjust height of leg properly. Check
the vertical angle and fix the leg with bolt and nut of breakable coupling.
7) Place fixing bolt for rod on anchoring leg and screw the rod having setting sleeve into
anchoring leg. The distance between lower rod and upper rod (inside of setting sleeve)
shall be kept in minimum 15mm.(‘A’ of Fig.5-3)

8) Remove body cover of the unit and put the unit on 4 assembled legs. Fix the unit on the
road by using washer and nuts.
9) Replace the body cover on the unit.
10) Use setting sleeve with rod for final adjustment of height of the unit. When the final
adjustment is finished, fix lock bolt of setting sleeve.

5.4.2 Recommended standard
The angle of approach is typically 3 degree but that can be changed according to local
airfield site situation. The different angle between two units is generally 20minutes of arc
as following Fig. 5-8.

5.4.3 Method of setting angle
1) Release 2 toggle switches of rear side of PAPI Unit and remove body cover of the unit.
2) Place `level support` of clinometer set on aiming device support of PAPI unit as Fig.5-11.
3) Place clinometer on level support as Fig. 5-10. Direction of clinometer shall be as Fig. 5-
9.

4) Place spirit level on ①rear position of spirit level on level support as Fig. 5-11. Adjust
rear two setting sleeve of PAPI unit to set rear level while watch the spirit level.
5) After completion of adjustment of rear level, fix lock bolts of setting sleeve of rear 2 legs.

6) Position the clinometer on ②clinometer position on level support as Fig. 5-11 and on
clinometer, set required approach angle on PAPI unit as Fig. 5-10.

7) Place spirit level on ③front position of spirit level on level support as Fig. 5-11.
8) Adjust front two setting sleeve of PAPI unit to set both of front level and elevation angle
while watch both of the spirit level and clinometer.
9) After completion of adjustment of front level and elevation angle, fix lock bolts of setting
sleeve of front 2 legs.

6.3 Troubleshooting
The table hereunder states the causes and the solution of the failures.

WARNING
To reduce the shutdown time of the runway or taxiway in case of a failure,
replace the entire light unit at first, and then replace the failed parts at the workplace.

7. Transportation and storage
7.1 Storage
All the light units are supplied in the pack of a separate box. The mark of the
contents should be located on the outside of the packing box in an appropriate way. The
lights packed in the boxes should be stored in dust-free, dry places, and they can be stored
using shelves, boxes, or freight carriages.
The circumstantial conditions of storage

Storage temperature : -55℃- +70℃
Humidity : below 80%(not condensed)
7.2 Transportation
7.2.1 Domestic
When being delivered to the site at a time, several packing boxes can be bound
together. The regulations of the maximum loading height should always be observed.
The heavy packing boxes should be located in the lower part and the light packing boxes
in the higher one. When several boxes are packed into one outer box, the mark of the
contents should be located on the easily noticeable part of the outer box. Shelves, boxes,
closed container boxes can be used for transportation. The previous measures to protect
the contents from rain or dusts when the transporting containers are opened after
shipment should be taken. (e.g. to cover the contents with foil, etc.) Related general
regulations for transportation on airline or ship must be followed.
