1. General Description
The Z3-DM8169-4K-RPS is a development system that allows decode of 4K2K content. Future versions will
support encode of 4K2K as well. The Z3-DM8169-4K-RPS consists of a hardware package and software
bundle designed to enable rapid development of multimedia applications. The hardware consists of one
Z3-DM8169-MOD-3X-RC System on Module card and one Z3-DM8169-APP-6x application board. The
software bundle consists of the necessary components for developing advanced multimedia, graphics, and
DSP applications.
The Z3-DM8169-MOD-3X is a compact OEM module. It is well suited for applications such as broadcast
video encoding and decoding, digital signage and video kiosks, medical and industrial video, video
conference terminals and MCUs, and high-definition embedded video subsystems. The Z3-DM8169-MOD-3X
features a unique expansion interface consisting of five high density connectors which provide access to
most of the interface signals available from the DM8169 processor. Figure 1 below shows the Z3-DM8169-
MOD-3X System on Module:
An application board, the Z3-DM8169-APP-6x, is included with the Z3-DM8169-4K-RPS.This application
board uses the I/O expansion capability of the Z3-DM8169-MOD-3X to implement additional functions not
present in the base module. The Z3-DM8169-APP-6x application board has 1 HDMI input, 3 bi-color LEDs
for status and a JTAG header to access the module’s on-board MSP430 processor. Figure 2 below shows the
Z3-DM8169-APP-6x application board:

3. Running the 4K2K Decoder
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-DM8169-4K-RPS to display 4K2K video.
5.1 Prepare the sample content
(1) Copy the sample 4K2K content provided by Z3 to a USB drive. To match the default settings in the
demo, copy the files to the root directory of the USB drive.
5.2 Connect the board
For these steps, please refer to Figure 3.
(2) Connect the supplied 2.5mm serial cable and NULL modem adapter to your PC.
(3) Take an HDMI cable compatible with HDMI 1.4 and connect it to HDMI Out of the board.
(4) Take the USB drive with the content from Step (1) and connect it to USB2 (the bottom port).
(5) Connect the 12V power supply
The next step is to set up a terminal to view the activity of the board …

5.3 Set up the terminal window
(5) If you are running from a Windows PC, run TeraTerm. Select “Setup – Serial Port” and set the
following:
Port: Whichever serial port the port is connected to
Baud Rate: 115200
Data: 8-bit
Parity: None
Stop: 1-bit
Flow Control: None
(6) If you are running from Linux, type:
# sudo minicom –s
And then configure by doing the following:
-Select “Serial Port Setup”
-Ensure the right Serial Device is specified (typically “/dev/ttyUSB0”)
-Set option E (“Bps/Par/Bits”) to 115200 8N1 and press <return>
-Select “Exit”
5.4 Power on the board and run the demo
(7) Connect the 12V power supply and turn on the switch. If all is configured properly, you should see the
board booting up within the terminal window. After about thirty seconds, you will see colorbars on the
monitor and the Main Menu in the serial console:

(8) Wait approximately 20 seconds. The demo will then automatically start. If you have
“Barcelona_25fps.h264” on the root directory of the USB drive, you should then start seeing the
content on the screen. At this point the playback menu should also appear:
(9) In this version, it is possible that the top and bottom halves of the picture may be switched. In this
case, press “t” and <return>. The picture will go black and reappear. If the halves are still switched,
try again. Keep trying until the two halves switch. It may be necessary to press “t” as many as 4 or 5
times, though usually 1 or 2 times is sufficient. Note: The need to do this will be fixed in the next
version.
5.5 Playing other content
(10) When you are ready to play different content, type “e” and <return> to exit playback.
(11) Some stop commands will be shown on the screen. When you see the words “exit main”, press
<return> one more time to return to the main menu.
(12) At the main menu, type “1” and <return> to modify the decoder settings.

4. Known Issues
The following are the known issues with this release. These will be addressed in future upgrades:
(1) Sometimes the top and bottom halves of the screen are switched. This is addressed by pressing “t” to
toggle the two halves. Sometimes multiple presses of “t” are required.
(2) The USB drive should be connected at boot up and should not be disconnected until decoding is
finished. If the USB drive is disconnected, it may be necessary to reboot the board.
(3) At this point, raw .h264 files are supported. Future releases will also support .ts files.
(4) Audio is not supported in this release.
