By p rchasing this MagnoTRACKER yo acq ired a professional Antenna, which allows
meas rement from 1Hz to 9kHz (ELF Versions) and 9kHz – 1MHz (LF Versions).
This prod ct f lfills the req irements of the applicable E ropean and national g idelines.

1.3. Safety Guidelines
In the event of any damages res lting from fail re to follow these operating instr ctions the
claim nder g arantee is discharged. We accept no liability for conseq ential damages.
In the event of property and personal damages res lting from improper handling or fail re to
follow safety advice, Aaronia AG accept no liability.
For reasons of safety and admissibility (CE) the na thorized conversion and/or alteration of
the prod ct is not permitted.
As voltage so rce please only se a proper mains socket (100-240Volt, 50/60Hz). Make s re
that the cable isn’t sq eezed or damage by sharp edges.
In order to avoid any damage, please read this ser man al caref lly before starting to se
the device.
The commissioning sho ld only be performed by q alified and instr cted personnel.
Never expose the device to water. Never se it o tdoors while it is raining. Otherwise the
sensitive electronics co ld be damaged.
Avoid to high temperat res. Do not leave the device on a heating, in direct s nlight or in yo r
car.
Only clean it externally with a damp cloth.
The antenna is sensitive to shock. So never drop the antenna and for safekeeping and
transport please se the carrycase.
Even tho gh the device is well sec red thro gh the se of co nter-s nk screws, it sho ld still
not be reachable by children as it co ld easily be diverted from its intended se.
This devices that is connected with mains voltage and derived voltages, is not meant for the
hands of children.
Consider the reg lations for prevention of ind strial accidents for electrical installations and
eq ipment, by government safety organization in ind strial facilities.
In schools, ed cational establishments, hobby and self-help workshops the operation of this
prod ct m st be s pervised by trained personnel.

3. Connectors
3.1. attery / Power supply
All MagnoTRACKER antennas are by defa lt eq ipped with an internal 25dB preamplifier.
These internal preamplifiers come with LiPo-Battery which has 3 – 4 ho rs r ntime.
The charging time for the LiPo-Battery is abo t 90 min tes. The Charge-LED will t rn red in
the beginning of charging. When charging is completed, the Charge-LED t rns off.
When the antenna is t rned on, the ON/OFF LED lights red. By pressing the ON/OFF switch,
yo can t rn on and off the antenna.
For a contin o s operation, the incl ded power s pply can be sed.

4. Frequency-Selection
The Selection can be done by choosing fo r control dials which cover fo r different scopes
respectively:
x1; x10; x100; x1000
A fine-adj stment can be done by the big control dial (0-15).
The freq ency selection of this antenna is very acc rate, so that the dist rbing and
„ ninteresting“ signals will be red ced very efficiently. The antenna has a SMA connector as
o tp t with 50 Ohm impedance. Yo can simply connect the antenna to yo r receiver,
spectr m analyzer, oscilloscope, power meter, etc.
Attention: The MagnoTRACKER ELF Models (ELF-2 und ELF-6) do not offer any
ind of frequency selection!
These antennas are usable over the full frequency range from 1Hz to 9 Hz without
selection.

4.1. Control dials x1 to x1000 and ig control dial (0-15)
With the control dials the center freq ency can be adj sted. T rn left for high freq ency. The
more yo t rn right, the lower the freq ency will get (t ning more finely with Big control dial in
the middle). For better nderstanding of the f nctionality, it is recommended to connect the
antenna to a spectr m analyzer and start a q ick sweep with 9 kHz to 1MHz Span. Then yo
will nderstand more clear on the operation modes of the antenna.
4.2. Slide switches 1 to 4
With 2 Slide switches (1-4) the antenna can be adj sted to 4 different internal antennas (here
both Slide switches m st always have the same position). The higher freq ency yo want,
the smaller setting yo sho ld choose. (1= high freq ency, 4= low freq ency, see page 11).
5. Application Example
The MagnoTRACKER is a magnetic field antenna. The antenna is not s itable for
meas rements of electric fields.
One of the typical application areas of the MagnoTRACKER is the detection of dist rbing
signals (e.g. on telecom wires like DSL, ADSL, etc.), which are generated e.g. from switching
power s pplies. F rther typical application areas wo ld be amate r radio, reception from
s bmarine comm nication, maritime radio, Sferics and RFID appliance.
The possibility to fine-adj st the antenna offers a directivity/resol tion of p to 1 degree or
even better.

6. First measurement
Example: Time Signal Transmitter DCF77
Let’s say we meas re a long-wave transmitter in Mainha sen (Germany), which provide
standard time for most of the radio-controlled clocks in western E rope. The transmitter
works at freq ency 77,5 kHz with 50 kW power and it is possible to meas re with the
MagnoTRACKER and a proper instr ment / Spectr m analyzer (e.g. SPECTRAN NF-5030)
within Germany and a big part of neighboring co ntries.

With correct signal reception, yo sho ld be able to see the amplit de changes of the DCF77
Signals witho t any problems (Signal strength changes in constant rhythm).
6.1. Direction finding
Locating the signals can be achieved by t rning the antenna aro nd very slowly. The most
effective way of signal direction finding can be managed by means of the Minim m-Method.
To do so place the antenna exactly 90° to signal so rce and then it will have the lowest
sensitivity (see pict re below). This method is generally the best and the easiest way in
practice to q ickly detect a signal, instead of time cons ming search for the signal maxim m.

In general, it is possible to set vario s freq ency adj stments and different positions for the
Slide switches (see point 4.2.). The data in this table are j st recommendations for
orientation.
The most neutral and wide-band setting for LF-2 and LF-6 antennas can be achieved
by setting all the Control dial at postion 0 and both Slide switches at position 1. This
setting is recommended for measuring signals with un nown frequency and signals
higher than 500 Hz.
Below graphic shows the typical resonance characteristics of the internal antennas
(partic larly determined by the position of the Slide switches) of the MagnoTRACKER LF-2
and LF-6 antennas:
