Definitions and General Warnings—
NOTICE
This document is a supplement to the
Esteem 399 Low NOx Installation and
Maintenance Manual (GF-125). This
supplement is for the proper installa-
tion of Direct Vent and Category IV (In-
door Air) installations using PVC and
CPVC materials, for other venting op-
tions contact AERCO International.
NOTICE
This manual is intended for use by a
qualified heating contractor or service
technician.
Please reference the User Information
manual for additional information.
Ensure this document and all pertain-
ing documents are kept near the boil-
er to be used by the qualified heating
contractor or service technician for fu-
ture reference.

Warnings
The following terms are used throughout this
manual to bring attention to potential hazards
or to important product information.
DANGER
INDICATES THE PRESENCE OF AHAZARDOUS
SITUATION WHICH, IF IGNORED, WILL RESULT IN
DEATH, SERIOUS INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
WARNING
INDICATES APOTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS SITUA-
TION WHICH, IF IGNORED, CAN RESULT IN DEATH,
SERIOUS INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
CAUTION
Indicates a potentially hazardous situa-
tion which, if ignored, may result in mi-
nor injury or property damage.
NOTICE
Indicates special instructions on installation,
operation or maintenance, which are important
to the equipment but not related to personal
injury hazards.

Removal of an Existing Boiler
DANGER
THE ESTEEM BOILER MUST HAVE ITS OWN DEDI-
CATED VENTING SYSTEM. DO NOT VENT THE
ESTEEM INTO ACOMMON VENT WITH ANY OTHER
GAS OR OIL APPLIANCES. THIS WILL CAUSE FLUE
GAS SPILLAGE OR APPLIANCE MALFUNCTION, AND
MAY RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL
INJURY OR DEATH.
NOTICE
When a boiler is removed from a com-
mon venting system, the venting system
may to be too large for proper function.
When an existing boiler is removed, the
following steps must be taken with each
remaining appliance, while the other ap-
pliances are not in operation.
1. Seal any unused openings in the common
venting system.
2. Visually inspect the venting system for
proper size and horizontal pitch and deter-
mine there is no blockage or restriction,
leakage, corrosion or other deficiencies
which could cause unsafe conditions.
3. Close all building doors and windows as
well as all doors between the space in
which the remaining appliances are located
and other spaces of the building insofar
as is practical. Turn on clothes dryers and
any appliance not connected to the com-
mon venting system. Turn on any exhaust
fans, such as range hoods and bathroom
exhausts, so they will operate at maximum
speed. Do not operate a summer exhaust
fan. Close fireplace dampers.
4. Place the appliance being inspected in
operation. Follow the lighting instructions.
Adjust thermostat so appliance will operate
continuously.
5. Test for spillage at the draft hood relief
opening after 5 minutes of main burner
operation. Use the flame of a match or
candle, or smoke from a cigarette, cigar or
pipe.
6. Correct any improper operation of the
common venting system to conform
with the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI
Z223.1/NFPA 54 and/or CAN/CGA B149,
Installation Codes.
7. After it has been determined that each
appliance remaining connected to the com-
mon venting system properly vents when
tested as outlined above, return doors, win-
dows, exhaust fans, fireplace dampers and
any other gas-burning appliance to their
previous condition of use.
NOTICE
When re-sizing any portion of the com-
mon venting system, it should be re-sized
to approach the minimum size as deter-
mined using the appropriate tables in Part
11 of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI
Z223.1/NFPA 54 and/or CAN/CGA B149,
Installation Codes.
DANGER
DONOT VENT THE ESTEEM INTO ACOMMON VENT
WITH ANY OTHER GAS OR OIL BURNING APPLIANC-
ES. THIS WILL CAUSE FLUE GAS SPILLAGE OR AP-

Vent/Combustion Air Piping
NOTICE
Installation of vent and combustion air
piping must comply with local codes and
requirements and the National Fuel Gas
Code NFPA 54, ANSI Z223.1 for installa-
tions in the U.S. or with CSA B149.1 or
B149.2 for installations in Canada.
The Esteem is certified per ANSI Z21.13 as a
Category IV (indoor air) or Direct Vent (sealed
combustion) appliance.
A Category IV appliance uses uncontaminated
indoor or outdoor air (surrounding the appliance)
for combustion.
The Esteem requires a Category IV venting
system designed for pressurized venting and
condensate.
A Direct Vent appliance uses uncontaminated
outdoor air (piped directly to the appliance) for
combustion.
To reduce the risks associated with indoor con-
taminates, flammable vapors and tight housing
construction, piping uncontaminated combustion
air directly from the outdoors to the appliance is
recommended. This also promotes higher sys-
tem efficiency.
Combustion Air Contamination
WARNING
IFTHE ESTEEM COMBUSTION AIR INLET IS LO-
CATED IN AN AREA LIKELY TO CAUSE OR CONTAIN
CONTAMINATION, THE COMBUSTION AIR MUST
BE RE-PIPED AND TERMINATED AT ANOTHER LO-
CATION. CONTAMINATED COMBUSTION AIR WILL
DAMAGE THE UNIT AND ITS BURNER SYSTEM, RE-
SULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, DEATH
OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
DANGER
DONOT OPERATE THE ESTEEM IF ITS COMBUSTION
AIR INLET IS LOCATED NEAR ALAUNDRY ROOM OR
POOL FACILITY. THESE AREAS WILL ALMOST AL-
WAYS CONTAIN HAZARDOUS CONTAMINANTS.
Pool and laundry products, common household
and hobby products often contain fluorine or
chlorine compounds. When these chemicals
pass through the burner and vent system, they
can form strong acids. These acids will corrode
the heat exchanger, burner components and
vent system, causing serious damage and pre-
senting possible flue gas spillage or water leak-
age into the surrounding area.
Please read the information listed below. If con-
taminating chemicals are located near the area
of the combustion air inlet, the combustion air
inlet must be re-routed to an area free of these
chemicals.

The above lists are NOT comprehensive.
Installer, end user and service personnel are
responsible for certifying the safety of any and
all materials that may affect the quality of the
combustion air.

NOTICE
For installations in Canada, all piping, fit-
tings and cement/primer material must be
certified and listed to ULC-S636.
NOTICE
Do not use cellular core pipe for vent pip-
ing. Cellular core pipe may be used for
combustion air piping.
WARNING
DO NOT MIX VENT COMPONENTS FROM DIFFER-
ENT VENT SYSTEMS. USE ONLY PVC AND CPVC
PIPE AND FITTINGS. SEAL ALL PIPE AND FITTINGS
WITH THE APPROPRIATE PRIMER AND CEMENT.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS
COULD CAUSE VENTING SYSTEM FAILURE RESULT-
ING IN LEAKAGE OF FLUE PRODUCTS INTO THE LIV-
ING SPACE.

A Direct Vent appliance uses uncontaminated
outdoor air (piped directly to the appliance) for
combustion.

NOTICE
Installation of vent and combustion air
piping must comply with local codes and
requirements and with the National Fuel
Gas Code NFPA 54, ANSI Z223.1 for in-
stallations in the U.S. or CSA B149.1 or
B149.2 for installations in Canada.
NOTICE
When using an unused chimney as a
means of a chase for the vent, the sur-
rounding space within the chimney can-
not be used to draw combustion air or
vent another appliance.
WARNING
A GAS VENT EXTENDING THROUGH AROOF
SHOULD NOT TERMINATE NEAR AN ADJACENT
WALL OR BELOW ANY BUILDING EXTENSIONS SUCH
AS ROOF EAVES, BALCONIES OR DECKS. FAILURE
TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIRED CLEARANCES IN
THIS MANUAL COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJU-
RY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
PIPING LENGTH & TERMINATIONS
NOTICE
The length of the vent or combustion air
piping must not exceed 100 feet reduced
as follows:
◦For every 45° elbow deduct 3 feet
◦For every 90° elbow deduct 5 feet
NOTICE
Do not include the exterior termination fit-
tings in determining total pipe length.
• Combustion air piping must terminate in an
upside down “U” shape using two 90º el-
bows as shown in Figure 2 on page 6 or with
a tee as shown in Figure 3 on page 6. Ter-
mination must be installed 12” [18” Canada]
above the highest anticipated snow level.
• The vent must terminate vertically with a cou-
pling to accept the bird screen and must be
located 12” to 24” above the combustion air
inlet as shown on page 6.
• The vent and combustion air terminations
must be located a radial distance of 12” to
24” from center-line of vent termination to
center-line of air termination as shown on 6.
• The following should be considered when
determining the location of the vent and
combustion air terminations:
◦Avoid areas where the vent termination
flue vapors might damage landscaping or
equipment.
◦Avoid terminating the vent where conden-
sation plume could obstruct window.
◦Avoid areas where prevailing winds might
cause freezing of flue gas moisture result-
ing in a buildup of water or ice.
◦Avoid locations where prevailing winds
could affect performance or cause recir-
culation of the flue gases—such as inside
corners of buildings, near adjacent build-
ings, vertical surfaces, alcoves, court-
yards, or other recessed areas.
◦Do not terminate the vent above or below
doors or windows.
◦Locate the vent termination to prevent
moisture damage to exterior finishes.
◦Avoid locations of possible contact
between flue vapors and people or pets.
• The vent termination must maintain the fol-
lowing clearances. See Figure 1.
◦At least 3 feet from adjacent walls
◦At least 3 feet below roof over hangs
◦At least 7 feet above any public walkways

◦At least 3 feet above any forced air intake
within 10 feet (does not apply to the com-
bustion air inlet of a direct vent appliance).
◦No closer than 12” below or horizontally
from any door, window or gravity air inlet.
◦At least 4 feet from any electric meters,
gas meters/regulators, relief valves or
other equipment. Never terminate the vent
above or below any of these items within
4 feet horizontally.
• Locate the vent and combustion air termina-
tions in a manner to protect from damage by
thrown objects (stones, balls), or buildup of
leaves or sediment.
• Do not connect any other appliance to the
vent pipe or multiple boilers to a common
vent pipe.
VENT AND COMBUSTION AIR PENETRATION
• Vent pipe penetration through combustible or
non-combustible wall material should main-
tain a minimum 1/4” clearance. The diameter
of the penetration hole should be 5” mini-
mum for 4” pipe.
• Combustion air pipe penetration can main-
tain zero clearance. The diameter of the
penetration hole should be 4-1/2” minimum
for 4” pipe.
• Use a galvanized metal thimble for the vent
pipe penetration.
• Locate the vent and combustion air pipe
penetrations to provide clearances as de-
scribed in Figure 2 & Figure 3 on page 6.
• Comply with all local codes for isolating the
vent and combustion air pipes as they pass
through floors, ceilings and roofs.
• Provide adequate flashing and sealing boots
sized for the vent pipe and combustion air
pipe.
THROUGH ROOF TERMINATION
• The vent and combustion air terminations must
include a factory supplied bird screen installed
as shown in Figure 4 through Figure 6 on page
7.
• The combustion air piping must terminate in
an upside down “U” shape fashion using two
90ºelbows as shown in Figure 2 on page 6
or with a tee as shown in Figure 3 on page 6
• The vent piping must terminate vertically
with a coupling as shown in Figure 2 & Fig-
ure 3 on page 6.
NOTICE
Do not extend the vent pipe beyond roof
more than the dimensions shown in Fig-
ure 2 & Figure 3 on page 6. Condensate
could freeze and block the vent pipe.

MULTIPLE BOILER INSTALLATION
• On installations of multiple Esteem boilers,
terminate the vent and combustion air piping
as described in this manual.
• The roof penetration of the vent and com-
bustion air piping should be such that the
combustion air inlet is a minimum 12” from
the adjacent vent pipe of the other boiler for
installations in the U.S. as shown in Figure 7
on page 8. For installations in Canada, pro-
vide clearances as required by CSA B149.1
or 149.2.
NOTICE
The combustion air inlet of the Esteem
is defined as being part of a direct vent
system. It is not considered as a forced
air intake. The required clearance of an
adjacent boiler vent to a forced air inlet
does not apply in a multiple installation of
Esteem boilers.

DIRECT VENT —Horizontal Sidewall Installation
NOTICE
For installations in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts, see on page 24 for addi-
tional requirements.
To reduce the potential of the combustion air
inlet freezing up, separate the vent and air termi-
nations in both a horizontal and vertical plain as
shown in Figure 8 through Figure 12 on pages
10 and 11.
If the vent is terminated on a sidewall which is
subject to high winds, terminate the vent using a
45º elbow or tee. A tee provides the best protec-
tion against wind but can expose the exterior of
the house to condensate. A 45º elbow improves
protection from both.
PIPING LENGTH & TERMINATIONS
NOTICE
The length of the vent or combustion air
piping must not exceed 100 feet reduced
as follows:
• For every 45° elbow deduct 3 feet
• For every 90° elbow deduct 5 feet
NOTICE
Do not include the exterior termination fit-
tings in determining total pipe length.
• The combustion air pipe must terminate us-
ing a 90ºelbow directed away from the vent
termination. The combustion air termination
must be installed 12” minimum above grade /
highest anticipated snow level and as shown
in Figure 8 through Figure 15 on pages 10 & 11.
NOTICE
The combustion air termination can be
placed either side of the vent termination,
a minimum 12” apart. The combustion air
termination must be directed away from
the vent. Options are:
◦90º elbow as shown in Figure 8 on page
10 or Figure 9 on page 10.
◦Coupling as shown in Figure 10 on page
10 or Figure 13.
◦Tee as shown in Figure 11 on page 10 or
Figure 14 on page 11.
◦45º elbow as shown in Figure 12 on
page 11 or Figure 15 on page 11.
The vent termination must be installed 12”
minimum above grade or the highest anticipated
snow level whichever is greater.
NOTICE
Do not extend the vent pipe beyond the
exterior sidewall more than the dimen-
sions shown in Figure 8 on page 10 through
Figure 15 on page 11. Condensate could
freeze and block the vent pipe.
• The combustion air and vent pipe center
lines must be a minimum of 12” apart as
shown in Figure 8 on page 10 through Figure
15 on page 11
• The following should be considered when
determining the location of the vent and
combustion air terminations:
◦Avoid areas where the vent termination
flue vapors might damage landscaping or
equipment.
◦Avoid terminating the vent where conden-
sation plume could obstruct window.
◦Avoid areas where prevailing winds might
cause freezing of flue gas moisture result-
ing in a buildup of water or ice.
◦Avoid locations where prevailing winds
could affect performance or cause recir-
culation of the flue gases—inside corners,
near adjacent buildings, vertical surfaces,
alcoves, courtyards, or other recessed
areas.
◦Do not terminate the vent above or below
doors or windows.
◦Locate the vent termination to prevent pos-
sible moisture damage to exterior finishes.
◦Avoid locations of possible contact
between flue vapors and people or pets.

• The vent termination must maintain the fol-
lowing clearances; as shown in Figure 1 on
page 5.
◦At least 3 feet from adjacent walls
◦At least 3 feet below roof overhangs
◦At least 7 feet above any public walkways
◦At least 3 feet above any forced air intake
within 10 feet (does not apply to the com-
bustion air inlet of a direct vent appliance).
◦No closer than 12” below or horizontally
from any door, window or gravity air inlet.
◦Must be at least 4 feet from electric
meters, gas meters-regulators, relief
valves or other equipment. Never ter-
minate the vent above or below any of
these items or within 4 feet horizontally.
◦A minimum of 12” or a maximum of 24”
beyond the exterior wall.
◦The combustion air termination must
extend a minimum of 12” beyond the
exterior wall.
• Locate the vent and combustion air termi-
nations in a manner so as to protect from
damage by foreign objects, such as stones,
balls, buildup of leaves or sediment.
• Do not connect any other appliance to the
vent pipe or multiple boilers to a common
vent pipe.
VENT AND COMBUSTION AIR PENETRATION
• Vent pipe penetration through combustible or
non-combustible wall material should main-
tain a minimum 1/4” clearance. The diameter
of the penetration hole should be 5” mini-
mum for 4” pipe.
• Combustion air pipe penetration can main-
tain zero clearance. The diameter of the
penetration hole should be 4 1/2” minimum
for 4” pipe.
• Use a galvanized metal thimble for the vent
pipe penetration.
• Locate the vent and combustion air pipe
penetrations to provide clearances as de-
scribed in Figure 8 on page 10 through Figure
15 on page 11.
• Comply with all local codes for isolating the
vent pipe as it passes through floors and
walls.
• Seal all exterior openings around penetration
with an exterior silicon caulk.
SIDEWALL TERMINATIONS
• The vent and combustion air terminations
must include a factory supplied bird screen
installed as shown in Figure 17 through Fig-
ure 20 on page 14.
• The combustion air pipe must terminate
using a 90ºelbow as shown in Figure 8 on
page 10 through Figure 15 on page 11.
• Vent pipe termination options:
◦90º elbow as shown in Figure 8 or Figure
9 on page 10.
◦Coupling as shown in Figure 10 on page 10
or Figure 13 on page 11.
◦Tee as shown in Figure 11 on page 10 or
Figure 14 on page 11.
◦45º elbow as shown in Figure 12 or
Figure 15 on page 11.
The vent termination must be installed 12” mini-
mum above grade / highest anticipated snow
level.

sidewall beyond the dimensions shown
in Figure 8 on page 10 through Figure 15
on page 11. Condensate could freeze and
block the vent pipe.
MULTIPLE BOILER INSTALLATION
• On installations of multiple Esteem boilers,
terminate each vent and combustion air pipe
as described in this manual.
• The wall penetration of the vent and com-
bustion air pipe should be such that the
combustion air inlet is a minimum 12” from
the adjacent vent pipe of the other boiler for
installations in the U.S. as shown in Figure
16 on page 13. For installations in Canada,
provide clearances as required by CSA
B149.1 or 149.2.
NOTICE
The combustion air inlet of the Esteem is
part of a direct vent system. It is not con-
sidered a forced air intake. The required
clearance of an adjacent boiler vent to a
forced air inlet does not apply in multiple
installation of Esteem boilers.
NOTICE
Figure 16 shows one option for vent and
combustion air terminations of multiple
Esteem boilers. Any termination option
shown in Figure 8 on page 10 through Fig-
ure 12 on page 11 can be used for multiple
Esteem boilers. The 12” minimum dis-
tance between center lines of the com-
bustion air and vent piping must be main-
tained for any chosen option.

ings and roofs.
• Provide adequate flashing and sealing boots
sized for the vent pipe.
COMBUSTION AIR SIDEWALL INSTALLATION
• Combustion air pipe penetration can have
zero clearance. The penetration hole diam-
eter should be 4 1/2” minimum for 4” pipe.
• The combustion air termination must be
installed 12” minimum above grade / highest
anticipated snow level and as shown in Fig-
ure 8, Figure 10 or Figure 13 pages 10 and 11.
• All local codes for isolating the combustion
air pipe as it passes through floors and walls
must be met.
• Seal all exterior openings around penetration
with an exterior silicon caulk.
