1. INTRODUCTION
AERCO storage tanks are ASME certified glass-lined pressure vessels designed for use with
instantaneous water heaters. When contending with challenging applications, they assure
consistent hot water service during peak demands. The AERCO storage tanks are available in
standard stratified or accumulator storage configurations.
IMORTANT NOTICE!
Incorrect installation can cause rapid failure of water tanks due to
electrolysis. It is vital that this risk is reduced by the use of
dielectric connections, isolation of the tank supports, and regular
anode servicing. Installers must be aware of correct procedures.

Overspray on topcoated tanks may hide some fittings. Prior to
filling the system, check all fittings and connections and compare
fitting locations to the approved drawing to ensure all fittings are
capped, sealed or piped to.
2. STORAGE TANK TYPES
The AERCO water storage tanks come as standard, stratified storage tanks or accumulator
storage tanks.
Stratified storage tanks (see Figure 1):
•These tanks come with either a dispersion tube or baffle at the cold water inlet to
achieve a thermal boundary layer.
•Models with threaded cold water connection are equipped with a dispersion tube.
•Models with threaded cold water connection have a 3” Male NPT inlet
•Models with 150 lb. flanged cold water connections are equipped with a baffle.
Accumulator storage tanks (see Figure 2):
•These tanks DO NOT come with a dispersion tube or baffle.
•Models with threaded cold water connection have a 3” Female NPT inlet
Standard storage tanks (see Figures 3 – 5 for dimensions):
•Dispersion tank is optional.

3. STORAGE TANK MANWAY/HANDHOLD CLEANOUT
Tanks larger than 36” vessel diameter are equipped with a 12” X 16” manway. A manway is
optional for 30” and 36” vessel diameters. 20”, 24” and 28” vessel diameters are equipped with
a hand hole clean out.
If your vessel has a manway, please follow these procedures:
•Manway covers and gaskets are shipped in place so they will not be lost in shipment. The
bolts are NOT tightened, so be sure to check for shifting of the gasket due to vibration in
transit.
•The bolts are not tightened completely so that the tank can be opened and cleaned and
inspected prior to service. Once the manway bolts are fully torqued, the gasket cannot be
re-used. Use only a 12” crescent wrench. DO NOT use any persuasion bars or pry bars to
tighten.
•For final assembly, of the manway, the gasket must cover the surface of the ring 100% and
project slightly on each side of the ring. The bolts should be tightened before that tank has
been pressurized and then re-tightened when the tank is at operating pressure.
•DO NOT use adhesives, glues, epoxies, or other such materials to secure the gasket in
place. Use only the gasket that was supplied with the manway. If additional gaskets are
required, or a replacement is needed, please contact your AERCO representative.

4. STORAGE TANK INSTALLATION
Consult your local building codes for water heater regulations and make sure that you acquire
any necessary permits.
NOTE FOR MASSACHUSETTS INSTALLATIONS: Storage tank installations within the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts must conform to 248 CMR 10.00.
Refer to the user manual for the water heater being used to ascertain any special requirements
for your installation and proceed as follows:
Installing the Storage Tank
1. Clear the area around the old hot water tank of all flammable items.
2. Switch off the water heater and allow the system to cool for four hours.
3. Isolate the electrical supply to the existing water heater by switching off the electricity at
the mains supply point.
4. Turn off the cold water supply to the existing heating system and any other heating
appliance.
5. Turn off the main gas supply valve downstream from the water heater.
6. If you are replacing an existing storage tank, be sure to drain and disassemble it
according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Install drain fittings at bottom connection before setting the tank permanently.
8. Place the new tank into position and line it up to be flush with existing plumbing
connections. Connect the storage tank to the plumbing using appropriate techniques.
9. You MUST install a relief valve at top of the tank per the manufacturer’s instructions. If the
relief valve is ordered from AERCO, it will be shipped separately from the tank.
10. Ensure ground wires to the heater are connected.

Installing the Storage Tank – Continued
11. Turn on mains electric power and mains gas upstream from the water heater.
12. Turn on the cold water supply to the tank, followed by the main water supply to the
system. Allow the tank to fill with cold water. Open the relief valve on the top of the tank to
vent air from the tank so it fills completely. Close the relief valve when tank is filled.
13. Set the thermostat at your required temperature, switch on the power supply and allow the
water to heat.
14. After installation, fill the system and run at operating temperature for at least one day in a
closed loop mode, then drain system, and re-fill.
NOTE
The tank should be installed in such a manner that should the tank
or any connections leak, the resulting flow of water will not cause
damage.
5. STORAGE TANK MAINTENANCE
Anodes should be checked and cleaned every six months. Should their diameter be reduced by
20% or more, they should be replaced.
AERCO supplies 25 grams of anode per square foot of tank area. Replacement anode rods are
available from your local AERCO sales representative:
•28” diameter and smaller tank – Anode (part number 59135-4) Required = 2per tank
•30” diameter tank – Anode (part number 59135-1) Required = 2per tank
•36” diameter tank – Anode (part number 59135-2) Required = 2per tank
•42” diameter and larger tank – Anode (part number 59135-3) Required = 3per tank
6. STORAGE TANK FIELD PIPING
NOTE FOR MASSACHUSETTS INSTALLATIONS: Storage tank installations within the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts must conform to 248 CMR 10.00.
Select the appropriate piping diagrams for your application from the following drawings: Figures
3, 4, and 5 are piping schematics for the stratified storage tank with AERCO water heaters.
Figures 6 and 7 are piping schematics for the accumulator tank with AERCO water heaters.
NOTE
The Innovation water heater can only be piped with a stratified
storage tank to ensure that the maximum continuous flow rate
through the heater does not exceed 50 gpm.
IMPORTANT!
The piping schematics shown in these installation procedures
illustrate only the piping between the water heater and the
AERCO tank. SEE THE APPROPRIATE WATER HEATER
