ThisUSBAdaptorhasbeentestedandcomplieswiththespecificationsforaClassBdigitaldevices,pursuanttoPart15ofthe
FCCRules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainstharmfulinterferenceinaresidentialinstallation.
Thisequipmentgenerates,uses,andcanradiateradiofrequencyenergyand,ifnotinstalledandusedaccordingtothe
instructions,maycauseharmfulinterferencetoradiocommunications.However,thereisnoguaranteethatinterferencewill
notoccurinaparticularinstallation.Ifthisequipmentdoescauseharmfulinterferencetoradioortelevisionreception,whichis
foundbyturningtheequipmentoffandon,theuserisencouragedtotryandcorrecttheinterferencebyoneormoreofthe
followingmeasures:

USBADAPTORINTRODUCTION
ThankyouforyourpurchaseoftheAIR802USB‐ADG‐2adaptor.ThisUSBadaptoroffersgreat
valuewhetheryouareanindividualpurchasingforuseathomeorforuseinabusinessofany
size.
USBadaptorsareasimpleandeasywaytoaddwirelesstoacomputer.Themajorityof
computersnowshipwithwirelesscardsbuilt‐in,butuserscommonlyfindweaksignals.This
weaksignalcanoccurduetoseveralfactors.Oneitmaybetoofarfromawirelessrouteror
accesspoint,mostinternalwirelesscardsdonotprovidesignificantradiofrequency(RF)gain.
Anotherfactoristhatalmostallbuilt‐incardshavetheantennasoperatinghorizontally,where
thewirelessrouteroraccesspointhasverticallypolarizedantennas.Thisresultsinsignificant
signalloss.Whatevertheresultingcauseoftheweaksignalis,theUSB‐ADG‐2withitsexternal
andremovableantennawillenhanceyourwirelessexperience.Thiskeytosuccessfulwireless
exerienceistheexternalandremovableantennawiththeflexibilityofusingalternative
antennas.
Thecompactdesignmakesiteasyforyoutotravelwiththeadaptor.Itdrawsitspowerfrom
theUSBport,soyoudonotneedanexternalpowersupply.
Thisadaptorsupportsveryhighspeedsupto54MbpspertheIEEE802.11gspecification.Of
course,mostbroadbandconnectionsareDSLorcablemodemsthatarelimitedgenerallytoless
than6Mbps,whichdeterminestheultimatethroughputratesinaccessingtheInternet.

Wirelesslocalareanetworks(WLAN),asspecificedintheIEEE802.11b/gstandardshavetwo
differentconfigurationmodes:
•Ad‐Hoc
•Infrastructure
Ad‐HocisagroupofcomputersequippedwitheitherWLANcardsorwirelessUSBadapters.
ThegroupofcomputersiscalledaBasicServiceSet(BSS).Theycommunicatewitheachother
eliminatingtheneedforanaccesspointorrouterdevice.ComputersinAd‐Hocmodecannot
communicatewithcomputersonawirednetworkorconnecttotheInternet.Inour
configurationsoftwareitisreferredtoas,“APmode”.Howeverthisdoesnotimplythatitisan
accesspointinthenormalsense.Ad‐Hocisshowninthediagramontheleftsidebelow.
InfrastructureiswhereacomputerorothernetworkdeviceequippedwithwithWLANcardor
USBadaptercommunicatesdirectlywithanaccesspointorwirelessrouter.Infrastructure
modeisthenormalmodeofuseformostusers.Itisreferredtoas,“stationmode”inour
configurationsoftware.Aninfrastructureexampleisshowninthediagramontherightabove.

TheremaybecircumstanceswhereyoumayprefernottoplugtheUSBadapterdirectlyintoa
USBport.Thismightincludescenariossuchasadesktopcomputersittingonthefloorandthe
desiretogettheadapteruphigherontopofadeskprovidinglesssignalobstructionsand
improvedperformance.AnUSBextensioncablewouldfacilitatethiseffort.Anotherscenario
mightbethatyouarenotusingtheantennashippedwiththeproductandhaveinstalleda
coaxialcablefromtheUSBadaptertoanantennainstalledoutdoorsforexternalnetwork
connectivity.Thecoaxialcable,dependingonthetypeandsizecouldcausesomestrainonthe
adapterinanUSBport.Inthiscase,theuseofaUSBextensioncablewouldbeuseful.
TherearetwotypesofUSBconnectors,TypeAandTypeB.TheTypeAisarectangular
connectorandTypeBisasquareconnector.TypeAisshowninthephotobelow.
IfyourapplicationrequiresusingtheUSBadapteroutsideoftheUSBportonyourcomputer,
thenanUSBextensioncableisappropriate.YouwillneedaUSBTypeA(male)toplugintothe
computerandaUSBTypeA(female)toplugintheUSBadapter.USBextensioncablesby
standardsspecificationarelimitedto15feetinlength.AIR802currentlymanufacturesUSB

ALTERNATIVEANTENNAS
TheUSB‐ADG‐2issoldwitha5dBigaindipoletypeantena.Thisantennaradiatesradio
frequency(RF)in360degrees.Usersmaydependingontheirapplicationandneedsfind
alternativeantennastobeuseful.AIR802manufacturesawiderangeofantennaswhichcould
beusedwiththisadapter.Antennasalonedonotdeterminethedistancethatyoumayreach.It
isafactoroftheRFtransmitpowerandreceiversensitivity(withtheUSBadapterandthe
accesspoint/routerdevice),anycablingloss,freespacelossandantennagainandotherfactors
suchasinterferenceinthe2.4GHzISMband.Withline‐of‐sight,antennnasandaproper
installation,apoint‐to‐pointnetworkcanbeachievedfor1mileormore.
Outdoorantennascanbeusedindoorsandwillalmostalwayswillprovidebetterresultsthan
anindoorantennaofthesamegain.ToinstallanantennaremoteoftheUSBadapter,youwill
needtopurchaseaspecialAIR802antennacableasssembly.Thecableassemblywillrequirea
RP‐SMA(plug)attheUSBadapterend.AIR802outdoorantennaswillrequireaN(male)
connectorattheoppositeendofthecabe.

ResidentialNetwork–ComputertoRouterConnectivity
•Residentialuserscommonlydonotreceiveadequatesignalcoveragethrougouttheir
home.Itisoftenassumedthatreplacingtheexistingrouterantennaforamodelwith
highergainwillresolvetheissue.Whileinsomecircumstancesthismayhelp,often
theproblemisthattheinternalwirelesscardinthecomputerproducestoweakofa
signaltoreachtherouter.InstallingtheAIR802USB‐ADG‐2devicewillnormally
significantlyimprovethisscenario.Externalantennassimplyprovidebetter
performance.

ComputertoPublicWi‐FiAccessPoint(HotSpotConnectivity)
•Whetherinalocalcoffeeshop,airportorhotellobby,thecomputerusermay
frequentlyencounteraweaksignalorconnectivity.Yourconnectioncandepend
uponhowwellthepublichotspotwasengineeredandinstalled.However,the
connectivitycanbegreatlyimproveduponthroughtheuseoftheUSBadapterand
itsexternalantenna.Anexternalantennaisthekeytosuccessfulwireless
connectivity.

MunicipalNetworkConnectivity
•Municipalorcitywidenetworkarebecomingcommonlyavailable.However,users
oftenhaveweakornon‐existentsignallevels.Theconnectivitycanbegreatly
enhancedthroughtheuseoftheUSB‐ADG‐2wirelessadapterwithexternalantenna.
Whetherloungingatthepoolorsittinginalocalparkorinyourhome,theUSB
adapterwithanexternalantennaisthekeytoimprovedexperience.Someusers,
particularlyifawayfromtheoutsidewalloftheirhome,mayrequirean
outdoorantennaconnectedtotheUSBadapter.Thiscanvaryuponthetypeofwalls,
thesignalleveljustoutside,interferenceinthespectrum,etc.Thisisaccomplishedby
removingtheantennathatispackagedwiththeUSBadapterandinstallinganAIR802
professionalantennacableassemblytoanAIR802outdoortypeantenna.

Home
•Frequentlyaremotebuilding,whetheritbeadetachedgaragefromthehomeora
commercialbuildingseparatefromthemainbuildingmayhaveasinglecomputerthat
needsconnectivitybetweeneachother.TheUSBadaptercaneasilybethesolution.
Forbestresults,anexternalantenna,generallyayagiantennashouldbeinstalledon
theoutsideofeachbuildingpointedateachother.ThiswillrequireanAIR802
antennacableassemblyfromtheUSBadaptertotheexteriorantenna.Thesame
wouldbedonetotheindoorrouter.ContactAIR802forassistanceindeterminingthe
bestantennaandcableassemblyforyourspecificnetwork.

YachtConnectivityinaMarina
•Ifyouhaveasinglecomputerinayachtanddesiretoconnecttothelocalmarinawi‐fi
accesspoint,theUSBadapterisanexcellentsolution.Forthebestresults,users
shouldremovetheantennathatcomeswiththeUSBadapterandinstallanAIR802
antennacableassemblyfromtheUSBadaptertoanoutdoorantenna.
•ThecommonsolutionforyachtownersworldwidehasbeentoinstallanAIR802USB
adaptertoaCA195cableassembly.CA195isthemostpopularantennacable
assemblyinusebyyachtowners.Itischosenforitssmalloutsidediameter(0.195”).
However,forminimumsignalloss,AIR802recommendsCA400cableassemblies
(0.405”outerdiameter).YachtownersgenerallyinstalltheAIR802ANOM2412
omnidirectionalantenna,whichisa12dBiantenna.Thisantennacanbeusedwiththe
AIR802marineantennamount.TheUSBadapterrequirestheuseofanRP‐SMA(plug)
connectoratoneendofthecable,andaN(female)attheoppositeendforanAIR802
outdoorantenna.Foryachtswithmultiplecomputers,AIR802offersanothersolution
utilizingourAP‐G200highpowerindoorrouter/bridge.

•Manycampgroundsofferinadequatewi‐ficoverage.Oftentheymaybeusing
commonresidentialbroadbandrouters,whicharecompletelyinadequateforthe
application.AIR802hasprovidedhighpowerandhighqualityequipmentthrough
professionalinstallerstomanyRVparksandcampgrounds.However,avastmajority
mayhavepoorqualityserviceofferings.Evenunderthebestinstallations,usersmay
haveinsufficientsignal.Thisisalmostalwaysduetoacombinationofaweakinternal
wirelesscardinthecomputerandmetalwallsofarecreationalvehicle.Theuseofan
externalantennaiskeytoasatisfyingexperience.Sometimestheexternal
antennamaybesufficientforimprovedsignalcoverage.Forthebestpossible
coverage,RVownersshouldinstallanantennaexteriortotherecreationalvehicleand
connectittotheUSBadapterthroughanAIR802cableassembly.Thecablerequires
theuseofaRP‐SMA(plug)fortheUSBadapteratoneendandaN(female)connector
foroutdoorAIR802antenna.

¾To complete the installation process, you must use an Admin-priviledged user account. If
you use a standard user account to complete the installation process, the WLAN utility
will not function correctly after the install.
¾Prior to any uninstall, quit the WLAN utility tool and remove the USB adapter.

3.2USINGTHEWLAN.APPUTILITY
After the installation is complete, the WLAN.app utility will automatically launch at the system
startup. However, you may relaunch the utility at any time from the following path(as shown in
the screen shot below).
Note: The WLAN.app application bundle is located in the directory /Applications/Utilities/.
