DAD3002C01

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAD3002C01
1. DESCRIPTION
1.1. The DAD3002C01
The DAD3002C01 is a balanced digital signal distributor with six outputs per section; the
module consists of two identical sections. The input provides loop-though and is
transformer isolated. All the outputs are also transformer isolated. The front panel
provides an LED that indicates the presence of signal for each section.
The distributor is based on a linear amplifier and does not perform any manipulation of
the signal received. Although this module has been designed for distribution of balanced
AES/EBU signals, given the lack of internal processing the DAD3002C01 can distribute
other digital signals transmitted over balanced lines as long as these signals remain
within the bandwidth specifications.
The DAD3002C01 is a TL3000 terminal line module and can be housed in a three rack
unit (3 RU) UR3000 mounting frame or a 1 RU UR3100 mounting frame.

3. INSTALLATION
THE DAD3002C01 MODULE CONTAINS ELECTRONIC DEVICES SENSITIVE TO
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE. Always use antistatic bags clearly identified
with a high degree of shielding for storage and transportation.
The DAD3002C01 module is composed of two parts: one DAD3002P01 main board and
one XAD3000P02 rear board. Both parts must be installed in a UR3000 or UR3100
mounting frame following the instructions in the corresponding section of this chapter.
3.1. Initial inspection
Verify that the package has been properly handled during transport. After opening the
packaging, check that one DAD3002P01 main board and one XAD3000P02 rear board are
inside.
You must notify your Albalá Ingenieros distributor or dealer of any damage or defects
observed.
Follow the instructions in this manual to install this module in the mounting frame.
3.2. Safety instructions
•This equipment must be connected to a mains outlet with a protective
earth connection. Never use extension cords that do not have protective
earthing connection. The lack of an effective electrical connection between
the ground pin in the mains input connector of the equipment and the
protective earth of the electrical power distribution can cause serious harm.
•All modules of the Albalá Ingenieros TL3000 terminal line can be
hot-plugged or unplugged without suffering any damage or affecting the
processes that are currently taking place in other modules in the same
mounting frame. When a module is installed in an empty bay of a mounting
frame, it is necessary to mount the rear board that is part of that module.
Prior to installing this board, the mounting frame must be disconnected
from the power supply network. This is required because in addition to the
risk of electrocution for the person handling the device it is possible that a
high instantaneous current coming from the power supply could damage
the connectors and components of the mounting frame and/or the rear
board.
11

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAD3002C01
•The DAD3002C01 module and the mounting frame should always be
installed, maintained, operated and removed by personnel with sufficient
technical qualifications. The equipment should never be placed in damp
areas, near splashing liquid, or in explosive or corrosive atmospheres.
Neither modules nor mounting frames can be used in applications that
could endanger human life.
3.3. Environmental considerations
This symbol indicates that this equipment must be deposited at a collection
point for proper waste treatment once it has reached the end of its useful
life.
3.4. Power considerations
The UR3000 and UR3100 mounting frames can house as many DAD3002C01 modules as
will fit in them.
3.5. Module configuration
3.5.1. Configuration of the loop-through input
The loop-through input of the DAD3002C01 provides a great deal of flexibility
because it allows multiple modules to be cascaded from a single signal source.
However, since loop-through inputs induce a small attenuation there is a limit to the
number of units that can be cascaded. The attenuation for the loop-through input of
the DAD3002C01 is 0.4dB, equivalent to an amplitude loss of 5%. It is not
recommended to cascade more than five modules with loop-through, although this
number can be increased. If more than five loop-through inputs must be cascaded,
the engineer in charge of the installation must perform the relevant calculations
regarding the length of the cabling employed and the signal amplitude, in order to
guarantee that the signal amplitude at the last input is greater than 300 mVpp.
If the loop-through input is not used then the line must be terminated with 100Ω.
The module provides this termination internally and it can be activated by setting
program jumpers J2 or J3 to the ''LOADED'' position, using the rear input labeled IN
and leaving the input labeled SPARE unused.
On the other hand, since the distributor uses transformers in both the inputs and the
outputs there is a lower limit to the frequency response. This means that any DC
components of the signals are eliminated, making the module unable to distribute
signals with a DC component.

3.6. Installing the module in the mounting frame
The steps needed to install the DAD3002C01 module with the rear board in the
mounting frame are:
1 - Disconnect all power cords from the power supplies of the mounting frame.
2 - Remove the blank panels covering the front and rear of the empty bays chosen for
installing the DAD3002C01 in the mounting frame.
3 - Install the XAD3000P02 rear board ensuring that its 12-pin connectors are properly
aligned with the mounting frame´s mating connectors. Check that the orientation of
the board is correct by looking at the placement of the text printed on it according to
the illustration below.

4 - Attach the rear board to the mounting frame with two M3 metric screws and tighten.
5 - Verify that the main board is configured according to the user requirements. The
configuration process is detailed later in the INSTALLATION section of this manual.
6 - Insert the DAD3002P01 board (main board of the DAD3002C01 module) into the front
of the mounting frame. The edges of the card slide into two plastic guides inside the

mounting frame.
7 - Affix the main board to the mounting frame using the two screws included on the
front panel.
After these steps, the module is ready to be connected to other equipment.
3.7. Interconnection
The following figure shows the DAD3002C01 module rear board connector layout.
Rear view of the DAD3002C01
The DAD3002C01 module provides two analog audio inputs with loop-through (IN-A,
IN-B) and six outputs (OUT1-A to OUT6-A,OUT1-B a OUT6-B) per section. The SPARE-A
and SPARE-B can be used to achieve loop-through or they can be left unconnected if the
inputs are internally loaded.
The rear interconnection board is not designed to withstand mechanical stress. The
wiring must be fastened properly to the frame where the mounting frame is housed to
14

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAD3002C01
prevent the rear board from supporting the weight of the cables.
3.7.1. Digital audio connections
Digital audio inputs are balanced and use 3.81mm pitch terminal block connectors.
Digital audio outputs are balanced, use 3.81mm pitch terminal block connectors and
their characteristic impedance is 110Ω.
For digital audio connections 110Ω characteristic impedance, two-wire shielded cable
is preferred. The GND terminal allows connection of the cable shield.
The DAD3002C01 can be used in installations with 75Ω coax cabling instead of 110Ω
shielded twin-lead cabling.
In order to do this the input impedance of the DAD3002C01 has to be changed as
described in the installation section of this manual and it is also needed to configure
the impedance of the outputs to 75Ω using an external adapter or a simple adapter
using resistors as shown below.

has an amplitude greater than 1.5 Vpp.
4.2. Functional description
The DAD3002C01 distributor does not perform any manipulation of the digital stream -
therefore the signal present at the output is a replica of the signal at the input.
The distributor accepts AES/EBU digital audio signals with sampling rates between
16kHz and 96kHz.
4.3. Module remote control and supervision
The DAD3002C01 CANNOT be controlled or supervised remotely.

5. GLOSSARY
AES/EBU
This acronym covers the combined AES and EBU standard for transmission of digital
audio. The standard defines a serial interface known as AES3 as per AES, EBU 3250-E as
per EBU or ITU-R BS.647-2 as per ITU. The interface originally transmitted two channels
(one pair) with PCM coding with a bit depth of 20 or 24 bit and a sampling frequency
between 32kHz and 192kHz. Today the interface is also used as a framework to
transmit digital signals that may or may not be audio with linear PCM encoding. The
physical interface defined by the original AES/EBU standard was a 110 ohm balanced
line. The AES3-id standard later defined the physical interface as a 75 ohm coaxial cable.
dB
Logarithmic measurement to express ratios of power.
