Albalá Ingenieros | Manual FRS3004C02
1. DESCRIPTION
1.1. The FRS3004C02
The FRS3004C02 has been designed to synchronize four SDI format digital video signals
to a common reference that can be analog (black burst) or digital and deliver two SDI
signals at its output for each input. This device is ideal for digital production
environments in which a large number of digital signals must be synchronized within a
limited space.
The FRS3004C02 module performs the following basic functions:
- Extraction of the horizontal and vertical sync signals from the selected reference.
- Stores the video signals from each of the four inputs in frame memory.
-Generates four SDI video signals based upon the sync signal from the reference and
the data stored in the frame memory.
Each section includes a bypass relay on the rear board that connects the input signal to
one of the output connectors if the power supply fails or the main board of the module
is extracted from its mounting frame.
It is possible to monitor the FRS3004C02 status remotely using a communications
controller module installed in the same mounting frame. In addition, certain controller
modules provide SNMP management and the ability to record events in a file including
date and time information for further analysis.
The FRS3004C02 is a TL3000 terminal line module and can be housed in a three rack unit
(3 RU) UR3000 mounting frame or a 1 RU UR3100 mounting frame.
The FRS3004 family is a set of SD-SDI digital video frame synchronizers, with the
following variations:
• FRS3004C01: Quadruple frame synchronizer for SD-SDI digital video.
• FRS3004C02: Quadruple frame synchronizer for SD-SDI digital video with bypass relays.

3. INSTALLATION
THE FRS3004C02 MODULE CONTAINS ELECTRONIC DEVICES SENSITIVE TO
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE. Always use antistatic bags clearly identified
with a high degree of shielding for storage and transportation.
The FRS3004C02 module is composed of two parts: one FRS3004P01 main board and
one FRS3004P02 rear board. Both parts must be installed in a UR3000 or UR3100
mounting frame following the instructions in the corresponding section of this chapter.
3.1. Initial inspection
Verify that the package has been properly handled during transport. After opening the
packaging, check that one FRS3004P01 main board and one FRS3004P02 rear board are
inside.
You must notify your Albalá Ingenieros distributor or dealer of any damage or defects
observed.
Follow the instructions in this manual to install this module in the mounting frame.
3.2. Safety instructions
•This equipment must be connected to a mains outlet with a protective
earth connection. Never use extension cords that do not have protective
earthing connection. The lack of an effective electrical connection between
the ground pin in the mains input connector of the equipment and the
protective earth of the electrical power distribution can cause serious harm.
•All modules of the Albalá Ingenieros TL3000 terminal line can be
hot-plugged or unplugged without suffering any damage or affecting the
processes that are currently taking place in other modules in the same
mounting frame. When a module is installed in an empty bay of a mounting
frame, it is necessary to mount the rear board that is part of that module.
Prior to installing this board, the mounting frame must be disconnected
from the power supply network. This is required because in addition to the
risk of electrocution for the person handling the device it is possible that a
high instantaneous current coming from the power supply could damage
the connectors and components of the mounting frame and/or the rear
board.
11

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual FRS3004C02
•The FRS3004C02 module and the mounting frame should always be
installed, maintained, operated and removed by personnel with sufficient
technical qualifications. The equipment should never be placed in damp
areas, near splashing liquid, or in explosive or corrosive atmospheres.
Neither modules nor mounting frames can be used in applications that
could endanger human life.
3.3. Environmental considerations
This symbol indicates that this equipment must be deposited at a collection
point for proper waste treatment once it has reached the end of its useful
life.
3.4. Power considerations
The UR3000 and UR3100 mounting frames can house as many FRS3004C02 modules as
will fit in them.
3.5. Module configuration
The FRS3004C02 contains microswitches that should be configured before installing the
module into mounting frame. This configuration can be modified using the control
software, however upon startup the values set by the microswitches take precedence.
Switch S1 configures the operating mode of the module as shown in the following table.
S1 OFF ON
1REF DGTL ANLG
2FAIL BLK FRZ
3SYNC LIN FRM
-REF: Specifies which type of reference signal the module will use: analog (ON-ANLG)
or digital (OFF-DGTL).
-FAIL: Specifies the behavior of the outputs in case of errors in the input signal: frozen
screen (ON-FRZ) or fade to black (OFF-BLK).
-SYNC: Specifies the wait time after an error has been detected in the input signal, the
error has been cleared and before considering that signal to be valid once again and
storing it to memory: the signal must be valid for at least one frame (ON-FRM) or the
signal must be valid for at least one line (OFF-LIN).
The modules come from the factory with the following settings: analog reference, frozen
image response to errors, frame synchronization.

3.6. Installing the module in the mounting frame
The steps needed to install the FRS3004C02 module with the rear board in the mounting
frame are:
1 - Disconnect all power cords from the power supplies of the mounting frame.
2 - Remove the blank panels covering the front and rear of the empty bays chosen for
installing the FRS3004C02 in the mounting frame.
3 - Install the FRS3004P02 rear board ensuring that its 12-pin connectors are properly
aligned with the mounting frame´s mating connectors. Check that the orientation of
the board is correct by looking at the placement of the text printed on it according to
the illustration below.

mounting frame.
7 - Affix the main board to the mounting frame using the two screws included on the
front panel.
After these steps, the module is ready to be connected to other equipment.
3.7. Interconnection
The following figure shows the FRS3004C02 module rear board connector layout.
Rear view of the FRS3004C02
The FRS3004C02 provides four digital video inputs (SDI IN1,SDI IN2,SDI IN3 and SDI IN4),
two synchronized digital video outputs for each of the inputs (SDI OUT1,SDI OUT1p,SDI
OUT2,SDI OUT2p,SDI OUT3,SDI OUT3p,SDI OUT4 and SDI OUT4p) and one input with
loop-through for analog or digital references (REF. IN). Those connectors labeled SDI
OUTXp correspond to the signal outputs that are protected with a bypass relay that
provides continuity of the input signal in case of a power supply failure or extraction of
the module from its mounting frame.
14

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual FRS3004C02
The rear interconnection board is not designed to withstand mechanical stress. The
wiring must be fastened properly to the frame where the mounting frame is housed to
prevent the rear board from supporting the weight of the cables.
3.7.1. Electrical SDI video connections
All electrical SDI video connections are BNC type. The following suggestions should be
kept in mind when wiring the electrical signals.
BNC connectors used on cables must be suitable for the high frequencies of digital
video signals: it is strongly recommended to use high quality connectors from well
known manufacturers.
All coaxial cable used must be Belden 8281 or similar. This type provides the greatest
lengths because it is used to calculate the equalizers in the FRS3004C02. Cables
carrying signal between the module and the devices should use single piece
construction, avoiding spliced sections with double BNC female or barrel connectors.
If it is necessary to split the cable into two sections the same type of wire should be
used in both sections.
The use of analog video coaxial cables RG-59 type or similar is not recommended for
digital video except for very short distances.
3.7.2. Electrical analog video connections
The analog video input uses two BNC connectors with loop-through.
If the output loop-through is not used, it should be terminated with 75Ω.
Analog video connections should be made with coaxial cabling with a 75Ω
characteristic impedance.

This section describes the significance of the front panel indicators of the FRS3004C02
module and their remote control and monitoring ability.
4.1. Front panel description
The appearance of the front panel and the elements it contains are shown in the
following illustration.
Front panel of the FRS3004C02
The panel contains the following elements:
17

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual FRS3004C02
In the REFERENCE box:
LOCKED: Blue. This LED lights up when the module is properly synchronized to
the reference.
ANALOG/DIGITAL: Green. This LED lights up when the module expects to receive an
analog reference. It stays off when the module expects a digital
reference.
SYNCHR/DELAY: Green. This LED is always lit and indicates that the module is
operating in Synchronizer Mode.
In the SDI INPUT box:
1/2/3/4: Red. These LEDs light up when no valid signal is present at the
inputs. They blink when EDH errors are detected. They stay off when
the signals at the inputs are valid and free of EDH errors. These LEDs
also light up when the module is being configured from the front
panel in order to indicate which input is being configured.
In the CONFIGURATION box:
H. DELAY: Green. Horizontal delay. This LED lights up continuously to indicate
that this is the parameter to be configured. It blinks to indicate that
the adjustment buttons allow configuration of the horizontal delay.
Otherwise, this LED stays off.
V. DELAY: Green. Vertical delay. This LED lights up continuously to indicate that
this is the parameter to be configured. It blinks to indicate that the
adjustment buttons allow configuration of the vertical delay.
Otherwise, this LED stays off.
Y GAIN: Green. Luminance gain. This LED lights up continuously to indicate
that this is the parameter to be configured. It blinks to indicate that
the adjustment buttons allow configuration of the signal's
luminance gain. Otherwise, this LED stays off.
CHR. GAIN: Green. Chrominance gain. This LED lights up continuously to indicate
that this is the parameter to be configured. It blinks to indicate that
the adjustment buttons allow configuration of the signal's
chrominance gain. Otherwise, this LED stays off.
BLK. LEV.: Green. Black level. These LEDs light up continuously to indicate that
this is the parameter to be configured. The Y GAIN and CHR. GAIN
LED blink simultaneously to indicate that the adjustment buttons
allow configuration of the black level.
SELECT: Pushbutton. This selects the parameter or the input to be
configured.
18

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual FRS3004C02
In the ADJUST box:
ZERO: Red. These LEDs light up to indicate that the selected parameter is
set to its default value.
+/-: Pushbuttons. These are used to increase or decrease the value being
configured.
4.2. Configuration from the front panel
Configuration from the front panel requires establishment of:
- The input for which the change will be made.
- The parameter to be configured.
- The value that said parameter should have.
Configuration is started with a short press of the SELECT button. This causes the Input 1
LED in the SDI INPUT box to light up. Successive short presses of the same button will
change the input whose LED then lights up. A sustained press of the SELECT button
validates the input selected and moves the module to a state where the parameter to be
modified can be chosen. This parameter is chosen with short presses of SELECT which
cycles through the choices. A sustained press will cause the input and parameter LEDs to
blink, indicating that the parameter value can be changed. This value is then modified
using the + and - buttons.
The + and - buttons can increase or decrease the configured value. A short press causes a
single unit change of the parameter, whereas a sustained press (longer than one second)
will cause coarse changes. The ZERO LED indicates that the selected value corresponds to
the default from calibration: no delay, gains of 1 for luminance and chrominance, no
offset in the black level. A sustained press of the SELECT button validates the value of the
parameter at that moment and stores it in EEPROM. The module then exits
configuration mode and the LEDs go back to displaying the status of the device.
The front panel programming routines have a timeout function and if no action is taken
for over one minute then the unit exits configuration mode and discards any changes
made.
4.3. Functional description
The FRS3004C02 includes a module for synchronizing to the reference signal as well as
four identical sections for synchronizing and processing each input.
Each input signal is deserialized and if the data received is valid then it is stored in the
frame memory. The frame memory is read in sync with the reference signal while
respecting the delays programmed by the user. The following adjustments can be made
to the video signal: luminance gain, chrominance gain and black level. Furthermore, the
checksums of the modified SDI signal are calculated and EDH packets are inserted into
19

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual FRS3004C02
the digital stream for error detection as per SMPTE RP 165.
If one of the input signals is lost, the module can operate as a line synchronizer or frame
synchronizer. In each of these two modes the detection of a sync error in the input signal
stops the writing of data to the frame memory. The difference between the two modes
is in the process of reacquiring the signal. In Line Synchronizer Mode the frame memory
controller begins writing to the frame memory as soon as it receives a valid horizontal
sync. In Frame Synchronizer Mode the vertical sync information must be recovered
before the system begins to write data to the frame memory again. Line Synchronizer
Mode is used for recovery of SDI signals with defective bits, for example, as a result of a
switching event. Frame Synchronizer Mode has been designed for exclusive use with
video signals coming in from outside the production environment.
The user can configure the delay of the output signal with respect to the reference by up
to one frame with a resolution of 37 ns.
The bypass relay on the rear board of the module can connect one of the SDI inputs to
one of the two outputs (the protected output) such that the existence of signal at that
output is guaranteed even in case of a power supply failure or extraction of the module.
