FEATURES
Pre-Amp and 7-Band Graphic Equalizer
The Graphic Equalizer is intended for system configurations
with an Alpine tuner and tape deck, or an Alpine tuner-deck
combination unit, and one or more of our power amplifiers.
DIN jacks on all components make simplify connections
considerably.
IC Switching Control Circuits
Switching between modes is fully electronic. All buttons and
controls are feather-touch type and upon being pressed will
immediately engage the desired mode.
EQ/LEVEL Mode Switch
In the EQ mode, the equalization curve is displayed, and
when in the LEVEL mode, the 63 LEDs will provide a
graphic representation of the sound spectrum of the program
music.
4 Equalization Preset Capability
Four different equalizer curves can be memorized in the unit
to suit different types of music. Any one curve can be
recalled instantly at the slightest touch of the desired preset
button.
Bi-Polar Operation
Subwoofer Output Switch
In the OFF position, the full frequency range is sent to the
special output. However, turning the switch ON, only
frequencies below 50 Hz, 80 Hz or 120 Hz are output,
allowing the unit to work as a crossover network for driving
subwoofer amplifiers and speakers.

installation
kit
consisting
of
mounting
bracket,
bolts,
screws,
and
a
trim
plate.
Make
sure
you
have
all
the
necessary
parts
and
tools,
then
begin
installation
according
to
the
following
proced-
ures.

1.
Hold
the
bracket
under
the
dashboard
and
mark
the
screw
holes.
Make
sure
there
is
no
interference
where
drilling
is
to
be
made.
2. Drill the holes and secure the bracket under the dashboard
with tapping screws (M5 x 20).
3. Slip the unit into the bracket and secure the sides with hex.
bolts (M4 x 8).
In Dash or Center Console Installation (Fig. 2)
1. If no space is provided in the dashboard or center console,
cut out an opening of a size that will snugly fit the nose piece
dimensions. Refer to “SPECIFICATIONS” for exact nose
piece dimensions.
2. Mount the unit in the opening using the mounting bracket as
shown.
3. Attach two strips of double-sided adhesive tape inside the
trim plate, one each to the left and right sides. Place the trim
plate over the nose piece and press onto the dashboard panel.
Note:
Before drilling any holes, make sure that there are no obstacles
behind the dashboard.

GY) DIN Input Connector Cable
A DIN connector cable is supplied for connection of the 3318
with the DIN output connector of your Alpine radio/cassette
unit.
62 RCA Input Connector Cable
An RCA type connector cable is supplied for connection of the
3318 to units of other brands which are equipped with RCA
output terminals.

Three DIN connector cables are supplied for connection of the
3318 to the DIN inputs of a front speaker amplifier, rear
speaker amplifier and subwoofer amplifier.
Dimmer Control Lead
If the 3318 is connected to an Alpine main unit with dimmer
control leads, the Auto Dimmer system of the main unit will
also work for the 3318.

When

Alpine

unit,
do
not
connect
these
leads.
If
the
3318
is
connected
with
an
Alpine
main
unit
with
RCA
pin
jacks,
however,
connect
the
power
antenna
input
lead
(male)
of
the
3318
with
the
power
antenna
output
from
the
main
unit,
which
provides
a
+
12V
remote-on
signal.
Then
connect
the
power
antenna
output
lead
(female)
of
the
3318
with
the
power
antenna
input
of
the
vehicle.

1. Turn on the power of the main unit. The 3318 is auto-

matically turned on at the same time.
Push the EQ Contro! BAND select switch.
The display will automatically switch to the EO mode, and
the 60 Hz* band indicator will now blink for approx. 5
seconds.

*The 60 Hz band indicator will blink only if this was the
band previously adjusted before disengaging the mode.
. Press the UP/DOWN touch control switches to boost or
attenuate the frequency that corresponds to the blinking
frequency and indicator (in this case 60 Hz). Pressing UP
will boost the frequency level and pressing DOWN will
attenuate the level.

again.
The

5. Proceed with adjustments for the other bands in the same
manner until all bands have been properly set.

the

previously

adjustment

started.

3318

desired.

Subwoofer
Featuring an subwoofer output connector, output level control,
stereo/mono switch, phase switch and crossover frequency
selector, the 3318 is ready for connection of any subwoofer
system.

to 3318 is also turned on or off.

Subwoofer
ON/OFF

OFF,
the
Crossover
Point
and
Subwoofer
Output
Level
indicators
will
not
light.
In
this
case,
the
full
frequency
range
is
sent
to
the
regular
front
and
rear
amplifier
outputs,
and
no
signal
is
sent
to
the
subwoofer
output.
. Turning ON the Subwoofer ON/OFF switch, the Crossover
Point and Subwoofer Output Level indicators will light. The
low frequency signals will now be sent to the subwoofer
output and only the frequency range above the crossover
point selected will be sent to the regular front and rear
amplifier outputs.
. The crossover frequency point can be selected by first
pressing the Mode Selector switch until the Subwoofer
Output Level indicator light. Then press the UP/DOWN
touch control switches to select the desired crossover fre-
quency point: 50 Hz, 80 Hz or 120 Hz.
. Adjust the subwoofer output level by pressing the Mode
Selector switch until the Subwoofer Output Level indicator
light. Then press the UP/DOWN touch control switches to
set an appropriate output level.

6. Adjust the Front and Rear Output Level controls and set the
STEREO/MONO switch (for the subwoofer) as desired
Note these adjustments should be made before installation of
the unit. (Refer to the section “ Output Level” and “STER-
EO/MONO Switch’’.)
* Adjustments using the UP/DOWN touch control switches
are only possible while the indicator corresponding to the
desired mode Is |it.
PHASE Switch
The acoustic characteristics inside a car vary from car to Car.
The acoustic characteristics inside some cars and the type of
speakers used — e.g. subwoofers which are capable of reproduc-
ing very low frequencies — may throw the sound out of phase.
Listen to the sound while switching the PHASE switch back and
forth, and leave it in the position where it gives you most bass
from the subwoofer.

STEREO/MONO Switch
If you are only using one subwoofer in the sound system of
your car, this switch should be set to MONO. Set to STEREO
or MONO when two subwoofers are used. Greater sound
separation is obtained by setting the switch to STEREO. On
the other hand, setting th switch to MONO will provide greater
sound volume.

The
output
level
for
both
front
and
rear
amplifier
outputs
have
been
preset
in
the
factory
to
the
best
levels,
and
no
further
adjustment
is
necessary
under
normal
circumstances.
Adjustment,
however,
may
be
required
if
there
are
differences
in
the
output
levels
and
sensitivity
between
the
amplifiers
used
with
the
3318
or
if
there
are
differences
in
speaker
efficiency,
because
the
Fader
contro!
itself
may
not
be
sufficient
to
adequately
make
up
for
excessive
differences
of
the
level
between
the
front
and
rear
speakers.
In
such
a
case,
adjust
the
Output
Level
Controls
as
follows:
1.
Make
fader
adjustment
so
the
Fader
Position
Indicator
is
set
to
the
center
position.
Identical
output
levels
in
the
front
and
rear
speakers
will
thus
be
achieved.
2.
Determine
which
output
level,
from
front
or
rear
speakers,
is
greater.
3.
If
the
output
level
from
the
front
speakers
is
greater,
with
a
flat
blade
screwdriver,
turn
the
Front
Output
Level
control
counterclockwise
until
the
output
levels
of
front
or
rear
speakers
are
in
perfect
balance.
4.

output
level
from
the
rear
speakers
is
greater,
turn
the
Rear
Output
Level
control
counterclockwise.

5. To balance the sound volume between front and rear speakers,
always reduce the volume that is greater.

Spectrum Display
1. By pressing the EQ/LEVEL switch once when the EQ mode
is engaged, the display will change into a spectrum display.
By checking the spectrum display readings, you may at a
glance confirm the level of each of the 7 frequency bands,
and make any necessary adjustments as you see fit.
2. Two sensitivity levels of the spectrum display are available:
Hl and LOW.
For proper readings, press the HI/LOW switch and set the
mode to LOW listening at high volumes, and set it to HI
when listening at LOW values.
The LOW position is also convenient if you find the level
readings
irritating
during
driving.

ermoglichen einen problemlosen Anschluf.

Vor der Montage
Vor Abschlu& der Montage auf der Riickseite des Gerates den
Eingangswahlschalter, Eingangsempfindlichkeitsregler, Ausgangs-
pegelregler, Phasenschalter und Stereo/Mono Schalter ent-
sprechend einstellen. Siehe hierzu ‘'ANSCHLUSSE”’ und
“BEDIENUNG”.
Ihr neuer graphischer Entzerrer Alpine 3318 wird mit einem
kompletten Montagesatz geliefert, bestehend aus Halterung,
Bolzen, Schrauben und einer Justierplatte. Uberprifen, ob alle
notwendigen Teile sowie passendes Werkzeug vorhanden sind
und dann die Montage wie folgt vornehmen.

6) DIN Eingangskabel
Das DIN Anschlu&kabel dient zum Anschlu& des Entzerrers
3318 an den DIN Ausgang Ihrer Alpine Radio/Cassetteneinheit.

Mit
diesen
Kabeln
wird
das
Gerat
an
die
DIN
Eingangsbuchsen
von
Verstarkern
fiir
vordere
und
hintere
Lautsprecher
sowie
von
Tieftonerverstarkern
angeschlossen.
Dimmerkabel
Wenn der Entzerrer 3318 an eine Alpinehaupteinheit mit Hilfe
des Dimmerkabels angeschlossen wird, funktioniert die auto-
matische Helligkeitsreglung (Dimmen) auch beim Entzerrer.

Einstellen der Entzerrungskurve

Hauptgerat einschalten. Der Entzerrer 3318 wird automatisch
miteingeschaltet.
Den Bandselektor BAND zur Grapheinstellung (EQ) drucken.
Das Gerat schaltet automatisch auf Graph-Anzeigemodus um.
Die Anzeige fur das 60 Hz* Band blinkt nun etwa 5 Sekunden.
*Die Anzeige fur das 60 Hz Band blinkt nur dann, wenn
dieses das zuletzt eingestellte Band war.

Mithilfe der Tasten UP/DOWN wird das der jeweiligen
Frequenz und Anzeige entsprechende Band (in diesem Fall
60 Hz) angehoben oder abgeschwacht. Driicken der Taste UP
verstarkt den Pegel wahrend er mit der Taste DOWN ab-
gedampft wird.

Uberblendreglung
Wenn
der
Schalter
fiir
speziellen
BafSausgang
(ON/OFF)
in
Stellung
OFF
ist.
. Betriebswahischalter solange driicken, bis die Uberblend-
anzeige (FADER) blinkt.
. Wahrend die Uberblendanzeige (FADER) blinkt, mit Hilfe
der UP/DOWN Tasten klangliche Ausgewogenheit zwischen
den vorderen und hinteren Lautsprechern einstellen.

Wenn der Schalter fir speziellen BafSausgang (ON/OFF) in
Stellung ON ist.
. Mit Hilfe des Betriebsartenselektors (Uberblendung/spez.
Bafausgang, Pegel/Frequenztibergang) die Uberblendfunktion
einstellen (Dieses wird durch Blinken der FADER Anzeige
bestatigt).
. Wahrend die Uberblendanzeige (FADER) blinkt, mit Hilfe
der UP/DOWN Tasten klangliche Ausgewogenheit zwischen
den vorderen und hinteren Lautsprechern herstellen.
Vorprogrammieren von Entzerrungskurven

Hauptgerat einschalten. Der Entzerrer 3318 wird dadurch
automatisch eingeschaltet.
Stellen Sie das Radio oder Bandabspielgerat auf Ihre Lieblings-
musikart (klass, Musik, Jazz, Folk, etc.) ein.
. Lautstarke- und Klangfarbenregler des Radios sowie die
Uberblendreglung des Entzerrers 3318 wunschgemaf ein-
stellen.
. Nun die Frequenzbander wie unter ‘‘Einstellen der Ent-
zerrungskurve”’ gezeigt einstellen.
. Die Einspeicherte (MEMORY) driicken, was durch gelbes
Aufleuchten der Taste bestatigt wird.
. AnschlieRend eine der 4 Speichertasten driicken, auf die
soeben eingestellte Entzerrungskurve einprogrammiert werden
soll. Die gedrickte Taste leuchtet gelb.
. Um drei weitere Entzerrungskurven fiir andere Musikarten
einzuprogrammieren, jeweils Schritte 2 bis 6 wiederholen.

Um
eine
neue
Entzerrungskurve
auf
eine
schon
belegte
Speichertaste
zu
programmieren,
ebenso
wie
oben
beschrieben
verfahren.
Wenn
die
neue
Kurve
eingespeichert
wird,
wird
die
vorher
eingespeicherte
Entzerrungskurve
automatisch
geloscht.
Spezieller BaRausgang
Da
der
graphische
Entzerrer
3318
Uber
einen
speziellen
Bafs-
ausgang mit Ausgangspegelregelung,
Stereo/Mono_ Schalter,
Phasenschalter und Ubergangsfrequenzeinstellung verfugt, eignet
er
sich
hervorragend
zum
Anschlu&
an
verschiedene
Arten
von
Bafgsystemen.

Mit
dem
Ein-
und
Ausschalten
des
Hauptgerates
wird
der
Entzerrer
3318
ebenfalls
ein-
und
ausgeschaltet.
Wenn
der
Ausgangsschalter
fiir
speziellen
BalS
(ON/OFF)
beim
Einschalten
des
Gerates
in
Stellung
OFF
steht,
leuchten
die
Anzeigen
fir
Ubergangsfrequenz
und
Pegel
des
Bal3aus-
gangs
nicht
auf.
In
diesem
Fall
wird
das
gesamte
Frequenz-
spektrum
an
den
Verstarkerausgangen
fur
vorne
und
hinten
ausgegeben.
Der
spezielle
Baausgang
bleibt
ohne
Signal.
.
Einschalten
des
speziellen
BaRausgangs
(ON/OFF
in
Stellung
ON)
bewirkt
das
Aufleuchten
der
Anzeigen
fiir
Ubergangs-
frequenz
und
Pegel
des
Bafausgangs.
Die
tiefen
Frequenzen
stehen
nun
am
speziellen
Bal&ausgang
zur
Verfiigung
und
nur
die
oberhalb
der Ubergangsfrequenz
liegenden
Signale
werden
an
den
Verstarkersausgangen
fur
vorne
und
hinten
ausgegeben.
