Full Two Year Warranty on Clip&Shear™
If this Clip&Shear™ fails due to a defect in material or workmanship within
two years from the date of purchase, American Gardener, at its sole dis-
cretion, will repair or replace the unit free of charge. Proof of purchase is
required to validate the warranty period. This warranty does not cover
normal wear items such as blades and batteries. For more specific infor-
mation on these wear items please refer to the Service section of this
manual.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other

•AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS – Don’t use appliance in damp or wet
location. Don’t use in rain.
•KEEP CHILDREN AWAY – All visitors should be kept at a safe distance from
work area.
•STORE IDLE UNIT INDOORS When not in use, the unit should be stored indoors
in a dry location – out of reach of children.
•DON’T FORCE BLADES – It will do the job better and with less likelihood of a
risk of injury at the rate for which it was designed.
•USE RIGHT TOOL – Do not use the tool for any job except that for which it is in-
tended.
•WARNING: KEEP HANDS AND ALL BODY PARTS AWAY from the blades.
The edges are sharp and can cause injury even when the tool is OFF.
•DRESS PROPERLY – Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. They can be caught
in moving parts. Use of gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when
working outdoors. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.
•DON’T OVERREACH – Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
•USE SAFETY GLASSES – Always wear proper eye protection, and use face or dust
mask if operation is dusty.
•MAINTAIN UNIT WITH CARE – Keep cutting edges clean for best performance
and to reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions for lubricating and service. Keep
handle dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
•AVOID UNINTENTIONAL STARTING – Don’t carry unit with a finger on the
switch.
•CHECK DAMAGED PARTS –
If the Clip&Shear™ or blade pack experiences a hard impact, check that no parts
were damaged and verify that the unit operates properly. Check for misalignment or
bending of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect
operation. A part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an
authorized service center.
•STAY ALERT – Watch what you are doing. Use common sense. Do not operate the
tool when you are tired.
•DON’T GRASP THE EXPOSED CUTTING BLADES or cutting edges when
picking up or holding the unit. Do not attempt to remove cut material nor hold mate-
rial to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the unit’s switch is off when clear-
ing jammed material from blades.
To reduce risk when using charger:
•DO NOT use charger outdoors or in wet conditions; use inside only.
•DO NOT charge the unit when the temperature is below +40 F or above +120 F.
•This unit and its charger are designed to work together. DO NOT charge the
Clip&Shear™ with any other charger and DO NOT use this charger with any other ap-
pliance.
•The charger is designed to operate on 120 volts. DO NOT attempt to use it at any other
voltage.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
OPERATIONS
•CHARGE BATTERY PRIOR TO USE – The Clip&Shear™ does not come fully
charged when purchased. So before using the unit, the battery must be charged. Before
charging the battery, read safety and charging instructions.

•PROPER RUNTIME AND PERFOMANCE can only be obtained with a fully
charged battery.
•CHARGE TIME – 20 hours of charging is sufficient to replenish the battery to a full
charge. Initial use, long periods of inactivity, or storage at extreme temperatures may re-
quire extended charge time.
•WALL CHARGE BRACKET – Before charging the unit, make sure the charge
bracket is securely attached to the wall; attach with screws to a wall stud, or use appro-
priate wall anchors.
To Charge Battery:
1. Plug the charger into a 120 Volt AC outlet.
2. Place the Clip&Shear™ into the wall charge bracket. Make sure that the unit’s charge
input connector has firm contact with the charge bracket output connector.
3. The Clip&Shear™ is now in charge mode.
4. Charge for at least 20 hours.
Charging Notes:
•CAUTION: The charger can be used with 60Hz cycle, and 115-120 VAC electricity
only.
•The charger unit plugged into the AC outlet will normally become warm to touch during
charging.
•SAFE CHARGE – The charger utilizes trickle charging, which is the safest way to
charge a battery. The unit will not overcharge and can be left on charge indefinitely.
•NI-MH Green Power – The Clipper utilizes Nickel Metal Hydride batteries. They are
environmentally safe and do not have a memory effect.
•Longest life and best performance will be obtained when charging in normal room tem-
perature.
•Battery life is dependent on usage, storage temperature and time. You should expect to
have at least 500 charge cycles with proper usage.
To Operate The Clip&Shear™:
1. To turn tool ON slide the safety switch on top of the handle FORWARD with your
thumb. Hold it FORWARD momentarily, while squeezing the trigger switch (located
under the handle). See Figure 1.

2. The trigger has been designed so it is easy to hold in the ON position during clipping.
The safety thumb switch may be released after the trigger switch is ON.
3. To turn tool OFF, merely release the trigger. The locking safety switch will snap back-
ward and prevent the trigger switch from being accidentally depressed.
To Change Blades:
1. Keep your hands away from the trigger and safety switch to ensure the tool is not acci-
dentally turned ON. Keep hands away from the sharp edges on the blades.

2. Place the Clip&Shear™ on a flat surface.
3. Grip the rear of the handle with one hand, while gripping the black release buttons (on
each side of the unit) with the thumb and index finger of the other hand. See Figure 2.
4. Squeeze in and pull the release buttons FORWARD and lift the tool upward to disen-
gage it from the blade and gearbox. See Figure 2.

5. With the release buttons FORWARD and the other blade assembly on a flat surface,
place the unit on top of the black gearbox and gently lower it into place.
6. When the blade assembly is securely in place push the two release buttons BACK-
WARD to lock the blade in place.
TRIMMING TECHNIQUES
Maintain proper balance at all times. Keep hand away from blades. Wear eye protection
when using the unit. Hold the clipper firmly and turn ON.
GRASS SHEAR
•The shear works best with dry grass, but it can be used safely in wet grass due to the low
voltage design.
•A long sweeping cutting motion will get the greatest amount of clipping per charge.
•Feed blade into grass at a rate that allows it to keep up cutting speed. Feed slower if
blades slow down.
•DO NOT force blade into the ground. It is designed for clipping grass, weeds, dry flowers
and new shrub growth. It is not designed for edging.
•Watch out for foreign objects in the grass.
•A fully charged Clip&Shear™ should have a cutting time of up to one hour. Cutting
time may be diminished significantly by a using a dirty or un-lubricated blade.
SHRUB CLIPPER
•The shrub clipper works best with dry shrubbery and bushes, but it could be used safely
with wet growth due to the low voltage design.
•A wide sweeping cutting motion away from the body is recommended, and will get the
greatest amount of clipping per charge.
•A slight downward tilt of the blade, in the direction of motion gets the best result.
•To cut thicker twigs, use a little extra pressure as you feed the blade through the growth.
•This unit should NOT be used for large trees and hedges with limbs in excess of 5/16th of
an inch in diameter.
•Watch out for foreign objects.
•A fully charged Clip&Shear™ should have a cutting time in excess of one hour. Cutting
time may be diminished significantly by a using a dirty or unlubricated blade

CAUTION: If the blades become JAMMED or stalled on a branch, stick, or foreign object,
release the trigger immediately. Failure to stop the unit when the blades are jammed will
cause excessive battery drainage and shorten motor life (overheating). After the blades have
completely stopped moving, carefully remove the obstruction.
MAINTENANCE
BLADE CLEANING – After you have finished trimming, you may find that dirt and
vegetation have accumulated on the blades. Wash the blades in water after each use to pre-
vent build-up. Hold the unit, tilting it forward, to ensure that NO water gets into the unit or
the blade gearbox. Only the blade tips should be held under running water or in a pan of
water. Turn tool “ON” to help dislodge any deposits.
BLADE LUBRICATION – After cleaning the blades, wipe with a cloth and allow them to
dry. Then, with a rag, apply a thin film of lightweight oil to the top and bottom of blades.
DO NOT overly oil. Turn the unit ON for a few seconds to work lubricant between the
blades.
OTHER LUBRICATION – No periodic re-lubrication of the clipper’s bearings or other
moving parts are required.
CLEANING PLASTIC PARTS – Use only warm water and mild soap to clean plastic
parts. Many household cleaners contain chemicals, which could damage the plastic. Never
use gasoline, turpentine, paint thinner or similar fluids.
BLADE NICKS AND BURRS – If you accidentally hit a wire, fence, stone, or other hard
object, you may put a nick on the blade. There is no need to remove this nick or burr as long
as it does not interfere with the movement of the blades. If it does interfere, use ONLY an
oilstone to remove it. DO NOT file or grind the blade as it will alter the steel temper and
reduce useful life.
DROPPING THE Clip&Shear™ - If you drop the unit, carefully inspect it for damage. If
the blade is bent, housing cracked, or if you see any other condition that may affect the safe
operation, contact our customer service at 800-637-2867 for instructions on getting the unit
repaired.
IMPORTANT:To assure product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs and adjust-
ments should be performed by our authorized service center using factory approved parts.
STORAGE
TEMPERATURE – Temperature extremes limit the useful life of the battery. The best
storage place is one that is cool and dry. Store the tool away from direct sunlight, heating
pipes, furnaces, etc. Do not store where temperatures go below +40 F or above +120 F.
CHARGING – It is recommended that the Clip&Shear™ is always stored in its charging
rack with the charger plugged in. The unit’s charger is designed to provide a trickle charge
that will properly maintain and not harm the battery. If you wish to store the unit in the off-
season not using its charger, you should charge the unit for 20 hours before storage. .
PREVENTING CORROSION – Fertilizers and other garden chemicals contain com-
pounds that greatly accelerate the corrosion of metals. Do not store the appliance on or adja-
cent to fertilizers or chemicals. Prior to storage and before or after each use, clean and oil
blades as described in this manual.

Extension Handle Kit is available.
Note: Accessories are sold separately. Only use American Gardner approved accessories
with the Clip&Shear™. The use of non-approved accessories could be hazardous and will
void the warranty.
BATTERY RECYCLE – To preserve natural resources, please recycle or dispose of this
product’s NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE BATTERY properly. Local, state and federal laws
may prohibit disposal of batteries in ordinary trash. Consult your local waste authority for
information regarding available recycling and/or disposal options.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT – You may order batteries directly from American Gar-
dener by calling [phone].
WARNING: When replacing the batteries, the proper polarity or direction must be ob-
served. Be careful to follow installation instructions that are shipped with the replacement
batteries to avoid damage and personal injury.
SERVICE:
WARRANTY - Your Clip&Shear™ offers a two year warranty against failure due to a
defect in material or workmanship. If you experience such a problem, American Gardener,
at its sole discretion, will repair or replace the unit free of charge during the warranty period.
Proof of purchase is required to validate warranty period.
The warranty does not cover components that are subject to normal wear, such as blades and
batteries. Replacement blades are available for purchase from the retailer where you bought
the product.
In the unlikely condition that the battery on this product needs to be replaced during the first
two years of use, you may purchase a replacement battery direct from American Gardener
for a 30% discount to the normal list price of the battery. . Please visit www.american-

TROUBLE SHOOTING
Problem: Unit will not charge properly.
Solution(s):
•Inspect charge connectors on unit and charge rack to insure a proper connection.
•Many outdoor or garage outlets in newer homes are protected by ground fault (GFCI)
circuits to prevent against electrical shock from moisture. Make sure the charger is
completely plugged into wall outlet and that the outlet is in working condition (i.e. not
temporarily disabled by a GFCI protector).
•Remove blade pack per instructions in Figure 2. Slide back the battery door and in-
spect that the battery pack is properly connected.
Problem: Cutting or run-time performance is diminished.
Solution(s):
•Please follow the trimming techniques described in this manual for best performance.
•Inspect blades to make sure they are clean, free of obstruction(s) and well lubricated.
Refer to Maintenance section of manual on cleaning and lubricating blades.
•Make sure the unit is fully charged – see the Operations section of this manual for
charging details.
Problem: Thumb safety switch is difficult to hold on during use
Solution:
•The thumb safety switch need only be engaged when starting the unit. There is no
need to keep switch in forward position while using the product.

GUARDE ESTAS INSTRUCCIONES
FUNCIONAMIENTO
•CARGE LA BATERÍA ANTES DE USAR – El Clip&Shear™ no trae la batería
completamente cargada cuando lo compra. Usted debe cargar la batería antes de usarlo.
Antes de cargar la batería, lea las instrucciones de seguridad y de carga.
•RENDIMIENTO Y TIEMPO DE FUNCIONAMIENTO ADECUADOS serán

•TIEMPO DE CARGA – 20 horas de carga son suficientes para reponer la batería a

•La vida más larga y el mejor rendimiento se obtienen cargando a temperatura normal de
salón.
•La vida de la batería depende del uso, temperatura de almacenaje y el tiempo. Debe
esperar recibir por lo menos 500 ciclos de carga con el uso apropiado.

Para hacer funcionar el Clip&Shear™:
4. Para ENCENDER la unidad, deslice el interruptor de seguridad que se halla sobre el
mango HACIA ADELANTE usando su pulgar. Sosténgalo HACIA ADELANTE
momentáneamente mientras aprieta el gatillo bajo el mango. Vea la Figura 1.

5. El gatillo ha sido diseñado para que sea fácil mantenerlo ENCENDIDO (ON) mientras
corte. El interruptor de seguridad de pulgar puede soltarse después que el gatillo
esté ENCENDIDO.
6. Para APAGAR (OFF) la herramienta, simplemente suelte el gatillo. El interruptor de
seguridad enganchará hacia atrás y evitará que el gatillo sea activado accidentalmente.
Para cambiar las cuchillas:
7. Mantenga sus manos alejadas del gatillo y del interruptor de seguridad para evitar
encender la herramienta accidentalmente. Mantenga las manos alejadas de los bordes
afilados de las cuchillas.
8. Coloque el Clip&Shear™ sobre una superficie plana.
9. Agarre la parte trasera del mango con una mano mientras agarra los botones negros de
soltar (a cada lado de la unidad) con el pulgar y el dedo índice de la otra mano. Vea la
Figura 2.
10. Apriete y luego hale HACIA ADELANTE los botones de soltar. Levante la
herramienta para liberarla de la cuchilla y de la caja de engranajes. Vea la Figura 2.

11. Con los botones de soltar HACIA ADELANTE y el otro conjunto de cuchillas en una
superficie plana, coloque la unidad sobre la caja de engranajes negra y cuidadosamente
bájela a su sitio.
12. Cuando el conjunto de cuchillas esté asegurado en su sitio presione los dos botones de
soltar HACIA ATRÁS para trabar la cuchilla en sitio.

TÉCNICAS DE RECORTE
Mantenga un buen balance en todo momento. Aleje las manos de las cuchillas. Use
protección ocular cuando use la unidad. Sostenga la podadora firmemente y
ENCIÉNDALA (ON).
TIJERAS CORTACÉSPED
•Las tijeras funcionan mejor en césped seco, pero se pueden usar en césped mojado gracias
a su diseño de bajo voltaje.
•Un movimiento de corte largo y amplio le dará a usted la mayor cantidad de cortes por
carga.
•Inserte la cuchilla en el césped de manera que mantenga una velocidad de corte uniforme.
Inserte más lentamente si la cuchilla se pone lenta.
•NO fuerce la cuchilla en la tierra. La cuchilla no está diseñada para hacer bordes sino para
recortar césped, malas hierbas, flores secas y ramaje joven de arbustos.
•Tenga precaución de objetos extraños en el césped.
•Un Clip&Shear™ cargado completamente debe cortar por hasta una hora. El tiempo de
corte puede reducirse grandemente si usa una cuchilla sucia o sin lubricar.
PODADORA DE ARBUSTOS
•La podadora funciona mejor en arbustos secos, pero se puede usar en ramaje mojado
gracias a su diseño de bajo voltaje.
•Se recomienda un movimiento de cortar largo y amplio, alejándose del cuerpo, el cual le
dará a usted la mayor cantidad de cortes por carga.
•Inclinar la cuchilla hacia abajo levemente en la dirección del corte produce los mejores
resultados.
•Para cortar ramas más gruesas, use un poco más de presión según inserta la cuchilla en el
ramaje.
•Esta unidad NO debe usarse para árboles grandes y setos con ramas con un diámetro
mayor de 5/16 de pulgada (8 mm).
•Cuídese de objetos extraños.
•Un Clip&Shear™ cargado completamente debe cortar por hasta una hora. El tiempo de
corte puede reducirse grandemente si usa una cuchilla sucia o sin lubricar.
PRECAUCIÓN: Si las cuchillas se ATRANCAN o se paran en una rama, palo u objeto
extraño, suelte el gatillo de inmediato. El no detener la unidad cuando se atranquen las
cuchillas puede agotar excesivamente la batería y acortar la vida del motor
(sobrecalentamiento). Una vez las cuchillas se detengan completamente, remueva la
obstrucción.
MANTENIMIENTO
LIMPIEZA DE LAS CUCHILLAS – Una vez acabe de cortar, usted puede hallar que se
ha acumulado sucio y vegetación en las cuchillas. Lave las cuchillas con agua después de
cada uso para evitar la acumulación. Sostenga la unidad, inclinándola hacia adelante, para
EVITAR que el agua entre en la unidad o en la caja de engranaje de las cuchillas. Solo las
puntas de las cuchillas deben ponerse bajo agua corriente o en un recipiente con agua.
ENCIENDA la herramienta para liberar cualquier depósito.
LUBICACIÓN DE LAS CUCHILLAS – Después de lavar las hojas, límpielas con una
toalla y déjelas secar. Entonces use un paño para aplicar una fina película de lubricante
liviano por encima y debajo de las cuchillas. NO use mucho aceite. ENCIENDA la unidad
por unos segundos para regar el lubricante entre las cuchillas.

OTRA LUBRICACIÓN – No necesita relubricar periódicamente ninguna de las piezas de
la podadora.
LIMPIEZA DE PIEZAS PLÁSTICAS – Use solamente agua tibia y jabón liviano para
limpiar las piezas plásticas. Muchos limpiadores caseros contienen sustancias que pueden
dañar el plástico. Nunca use gasolina, aguarrás, disolvente de pinturas o fluidos similares.
MELLAS EN LAS CUCHILLAS – Si usted accidentalmente da contra un alambre, una
verja, una piedra u otro objeto duro, puede mellar las cuchillas. No hay necesidad de quitar
las mellas mientras no interfieran con el movimiento de las cuchillas. Si interfieren, use
SOLAMENTE una piedra de amolar para quitarlas. NO lime o muela la cuchilla porque
alterará el temple del metal y reducirá su vida útil.
DEJAR CAER EL Clip&Shear™ - Si deja caer la unidad, inspecciónela cuidadosamente
buscando daños. Si la cuchilla está doblada, la caja rota, o si ve alguna otra condición que
pueda afectar el funcionamiento seguro, llame a servicio al cliente al 800-637-2867 para
instrucciones de reparación.
IMPORTANTE:Para mantener la SEGURIDAD yFIABILIDAD del producto, las
reparaciones y ajustes deben llevarse a cabo por nuestro centro de servicio autorizado
usando piezas autorizadas por la fábrica.
CÓMO GUARDAR
TEMPERATURA – Los extremos de temperatura limitan la vida útil de la batería. El
mejor lugar para guardarla es en un lugar fresco y seco. Guarde la herramienta lejos de la
luz directa del sol, tubería de calefacción, hornos, etc. No guarde donde las temperaturas no
estén entre +40 F (4C) a +120 F (48C).
CARGAR – Se recomienda que el Clip&Shear™ se guarde siempre en el soporte de cargar
con el cargador enchufado. El cargador de la unidad está diseñado para cargar la batería
poco a poco, lo que la mantendrá perfectamente salva. Si usted desea almacenar la unidad
fuera de la temporada de uso, debe cargar la unidad por 20 horas antes de guardarla.
EVITE LA CORROSIÓN – Los fertilizantes y otras sustancias químicas de jardín
contienen compuestos que pueden acelerar grandemente la corrosión de los metales. No
guarde el aparato sobre o cerca de los fertilizantes o sustancias químicas. Antes de guardarlo
o después de cada uso, limpie y lubrique las hojas como se describe en este manual.

Nota: Los accesorios se venden por separado. Use solamente accesorios aprobados por
American Gardener para el Clip&Shear™. El uso de accesorios no aprobados puede ser

deshágase de la batería de HIDRURO METÁLICO DE NÍQUEL de la manera correcta. Las
leyes locales, estatales y federales pueden prohibir deshacerse de las baterías en la basura

deshacerse o reciclar las baterías.

REEMPLAZO DE BATERÍAS – Usted puede ordenar las baterías directamente de

La garantía no cubre componentes sujetos a desgaste normal, tales como baterías o

EN CASO DE PROBLEMAS
Problema: La unidad no carga adecuadamente.
Solución(es):
•Inspeccione los conectadores de carga en la unidad y el soporte de cargar para asegurar
una buena conexión.
•Muchas tomas de corrientes en los garajes y fuera de la casa están protegidas por un
interruptor de corto circuito (GFCI) para evitar una descarga debido a la humedad.
Asegúrese que el cargador está completamente enchufado a la toma y que ésta funciona
(i.e. no está desactivada temporalmente por el protector GFCI).

•Saque la caja de cuchillas según las instrucciones de la Figura 2. Deslice la puerta de
la batería e inspeccione que el paquete de la batería está conectado adecuadamente.
Problema: El tiempo de corte o el rendimiento está reducido.
Solución(es):
•Por favor siga las técnicas de recorte descritas en el manual para mejor rendimiento.
•Inspeccione las cuchillas para verificar que estén limpias, libres de obstrucciones y
bien lubricadas. Vea la sección de Mantenimiento del manual acerca de como limpiar
y lubricar las cuchillas.
•Verifique que la unidad esté completamente cargada – vea la sección de
Funcionamiento para detalles sobre como cargar.
Problema: El interruptor de seguridad de pulgar es difícil de aguantar durante el uso
Solución:
•El interruptor de seguridad de pulgar se usa solamente cuando encienda la unidad. No
tiene necesidad de mantener el interruptor hacia adelante cuando use el producto.
