Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the E3 e-m@iler. The machine combines a multitude of
features including telephone, handsfree-speakerphone, videophone, email sender/
receiver, text message sender/receiver, fax sender, internet web surfer, games
console, VoiceMail answering machine and electronic Address Book.
As well as normal telephone and handsfree-speakerphone facilities, your e-m@iler
incorporates a videophone so that you can make video calls (to other E3 e-m@ilers)
and see the person you’re speaking to on the colour LCD screen.
Your e-m@iler allows you to send and receive email messages. Messages can be
typed using the pull-out keyboard and are displayed on the screen. You can send email
messages with photo and/or voice attachments as well as receive or forward
messages with graphics and sound attachments. You can also leave memos for other
users (or yourself). Memos are free of charge and may include a photo and/or voice
message.
Additionally, your e-m@iler allows you to send text messages or picture messages to
mobile phones and receive text and picture replies. On top of this, you can also send
fax messages – this enables you to communicate with people who aren't on email but
do have a fax machine.
Your e-m@iler features Amsurf which opens up the wide world of the internet to your
screen. You can 'log on' and surf the many thousands of low-graphics internet web
sites as well as a number of full web sites. All this provides a vast library of online
information for you to browse. If you’ve connected a printer, you can print web pages.
Your e-m@iler also provides a varied and regularly updated library of games – all you
have to do is choose a game, download it and play it. You can have several games
downloaded in the e-m@iler at one time. To make gameplay faster, easier and more
fun, a GamePad is provided. The GamePad is a handheld games controller which
simply plugs into the e-m@iler and keyboard.
The Address Book section of this machine replaces your old hand-written book of
names and numbers etc. You can programme up to 700 names in the Address Book
memory, and under each name store a home number, office number, mobile number
and fax number as well as an email address and postal address. Once programmed,
you simply type in a name so it appears on the display and then press the appropriate
button to dial the number or compose an email, text or fax message.
The e-m@iler has downloadable polyphonic ringtones and can be set to play the tune
of your choice whenever the phone rings. The built-in answering machine – VoiceMail
– stores incoming messages and memos. You can listen to your VoiceMail messages
either at the e-m@iler itself or by phone from another location. Note that VoiceMail is
digital and therefore tapeless – you can select and play messages instantly.

Introduction
- 5 -
IMPORTANT – The e-m@iler must be powered all the time.
Note that the e-m@iler cannot make or receive telephone
calls without power.
Make sure you are not solely dependent on the e-m@iler to
make or receive emergency calls during a power failure.
About this book
Please take the time to read this book thoroughly. If you skip certain chapters, the
e-m@iler will not operate.
&You will find notes and tips in lighter text throughout this book – look out for
the &sign. Once you become familiar with the e-m@iler, you can ignore the
notes and tips.
➣
FAST TRACK: For many of the procedures in this book there are fast track
instructions to show you quickly which keys to press and what action to
take. Use the fast track instructions if you don't require in-depth help.
♦ You will also find a useful index at the back of this book.
Ready to register
NOTE – The registration procedure must be carried out
otherwise the e-m@iler will not work at all – you will not be
able to make outgoing phone calls or receive incoming
phone calls.
If you've previously owned an e-m@iler and wish to use an existing email address at
@amserve.com or @amserve.net, then do not carry out the registration
procedure ahead. Instead, go to the section entitled 'Adopting an old e-m@iler account'
on page 132.

Installation
- 6 -
D
Installation
After unpacking the e-m@iler, please retain all packaging in case you ever
need to transport the unit or return it for repair.
Installation notes
NOTE - The e-m@iler is designed for installation in UK only.
The e-m@iler will cease to operate unless it remains
connected to a suitable telephone exchange.
Do not install the e-m@iler in an excessively hot, cold, damp or dusty environment. The
e-m@iler is intended for indoor use only (operating temperature: 5°C – 40°C). Locate
the e-m@iler close to both mains supply and telephone line sockets. For optimum
videophone picture quality, make sure the room is well lit, but do not position the
e-m@iler with its screen directly facing a sunlit window.
The mains supply adaptor provided with the e-m@iler must be used only on the
following mains supply:
MAC 230V ¶50HzM
(Note the mains supply adaptor is packed in a small box within the main carton.)
The e-m@iler must not be exposed to dripping or splashing. Never place objects filled
with liquids (such as vases) close to the unit. If liquid is accidentally spilt or splashed on
the unit, disconnect the mains adaptor from the supply socket immediately and consult
your dealer.
No naked flame sources (such as lighted candles) should be placed on or near the
e-m@iler.
7
WARNING – If the e-m@iler is subjected to a high voltage electrostatic
discharge, the unit may reset, as if just switched on. In these
circumstances any temporary information (for example, a partly
composed message) will be lost, as is the case after a power
interruption. Any stored messages and Address Book entries will not be
affected, however.

Installation
- 7 -
Connections
1. Remove all the plastic packaging from
the e-m@iler.
2. The e-m@iler is supplied with the
screen display laid flat. Once you have
unpacked the unit, tilt the display up to
a suitable position. During use, you can
adjust this position to achieve the
optimum viewing angle.
3. Place the handset into position.
4. The trailing wire from the back of the e-m@iler connects to your
telephone line – plug it into your phone socket on the wall.
♦ Alternatively, if you have a fax machine, leave the fax machine plugged into your
phone socket on the wall, and plug the e-m@iler into the phone socket on the fax
machine itself. (Only fax machines that include a phone socket are usable with
the e-m@iler.)
5. Slide the keyboard out from under the front
of the e-m@iler and carefully remove its
plastic packaging. Note the keyboard
comes ready-connected to the e-m@iler.
The GamePad should be fitted between the
e-m@iler and the keyboard. If you wish to
connect the GamePad, first unplug the
keyboard (see right):
Note, to remove the keyboard plug, squeeze
together its outer tabs and gently pull out
the plug. Before reconnecting the keyboard
plug, always make sure that its central lug
is face up.
Never force the plug into the keyboard.

Installation
- 8 -
Plug the GamePad connector into the keyboard, then plug the e-m@iler into the
GamePad connector (see below).
&Remember – before inserting the plugs, make sure their central lugs are
face up. Never use force when inserting the plugs.
Later, you can remove the GamePad and reconnect the e-m@iler directly to the
keyboard. When the GamePad is not connected, the keyboard may be slid back under
the front of the e-m@iler.
For further information on the GamePad, see page 112.
♦ If you wish to add a printer or smartcard see Advanced settings page 119.
6. Unpack the mains supply adaptor from its box – don't plug the adaptor into the
mains supply just yet!
Plug the lead from the mains supply adaptor
firmly into the POWER socket at the back of
the phone. Pass the wire around the 'hook'
beside the socket (see right) to prevent
it becoming unplugged if the lead is
accidentally tugged.
Y
WARNING – Use only the mains supply adaptor provided. Using
any other adaptor may damage the e-m@iler and will invalidate the
warranty.
The e-m@iler is now ready to switch on. If you haven't already done so, remove
the plastic films protecting the display.

Installation
- 9 -
Care and maintenance
The e-m@iler may be cleaned by wiping it over with a clean, barely damp cloth. Do not
use sprays or abrasive cleaners as these can damage the cabinet and components.
Take special care not to mark or scratch the screen display. If ever you need to clean
the camera lens, do it very gently using a cotton-bud damped with lens cleaner.
IMPORTANT – The e-m@iler must remain powered day and
night so that it's ready to make a video payment call
(information on page 37) or to receive any new email or
software update (information on page 27).
Note if you disconnect the power for a prolonged period,
your email account will be suspended. You can re-adopt the
account within 90 days by carrying out the procedure on
page 132. After 90 days, however, the account will be
deleted and its username released for re-use in new
registrations. Any email sent to a deleted account will be
returned to the sender as undeliverable.
Switching on
Plug the mains adaptor into the mains supply and switch on at the wall. The red and
green lights above the e-m@iler screen will flash while the e-m@iler carries out its
internal start-up procedure. This takes approximately one minute, after which the
following display will appear (see example below).
Note that this display (containing the clock) is called
the standby display.
When you first switch on, you'll see the message
'Press the [EMAIL] button to get
connected' at the bottom of the standby display –
don't press the EMAIL button just yet!
&If you don't see the above display, make sure that the handset is in position.
(See also 'Demo mode' on next page.)

Installation
- 10 -
♦ You can adjust the brightness of the display using the pull-out keyboard below
the e-m@iler – hold down the yellow SYMBOL key while pressing Lor Rlike so:
hold down
while pressing
or
The display is factory-set so the backlight switches off at night (if there are no
adverts to be displayed). However, if you want the backlight on continuously (or
only when the e-m@iler is in use), refer to Advanced settings page 124.
&Don't worry that the clock setting isn't correct when you switch on – the time
(and date) will be set automatically during the registration process ahead.
Demo mode
If your e-m@iler is not connected to a telephone line, a demo mode will activate after a
few minutes. (This is for demonstrating the e-m@iler‘s features on in-store displays.)
Note, the demo will automatically stop within a minute of you plugging the e-m@iler into
a working telephone line.
♦ To switch the demo on or off manually, press the keys "SHIFT and CALC
together on the pull-out keyboard. (You may need to wait a few seconds before
the demo starts.)
&You cannot switch on the demo if any adverts are present.
Screen saver
As is the case with PC monitors, a constantly
displayed static image can ‘burn’ itself onto the
screen. For this reason, whenever the e-m@iler
hasn't been used for a few minutes, the normal
display will disappear and a screen saver will
appear instead (see example right). This moving
image helps preserve the life of the screen.
♦ Note as soon as you press a key, receive a call, pick up the handset, etc, the
screen saver will disappear and the normal display will be restored.
If you don't use the e-m@iler for a few minutes while composing a message, the screen
saver will appear. Note, when you resume composing, you will have to press Dto
move the cursor back down to where you were previously typing.

Installation
- 11 -
Pocket Dock-it (optional accessory)
The Pocket Dock-it is a handy-sized electronic address book and calculator that can be
purchased for use with the e-m@iler. When plugged into the e-m@iler, the names,
phone numbers and email addresses can be transferred* to the Pocket Dock-it
enabling you to take them out and about with you. Additionally, when you're on the
move, you can use the Pocket Dock-it to take down new names, numbers and email
addresses for later transfer back to the e-m@iler.
In addition to the above features, the Pocket Dock-it also protects against the
accidental deletion of Address Book entries on the e-m@iler – in such circumstances
you can simply transfer* the data back to the e-m@iler from the Pocket Dock-it
(information on page 121). What's more, if your e-m@iler ever needs to be replaced by
another unit, you can use the Pocket Dock-it to transfer* your existing Address Book
entries to the replacement e-m@iler.
You can purchase a Pocket Dock-it from the SERVICES menu – look under
ONLINE LINKS /AMSERVE LINKS.
Note, if you have an older model e-m@iler or e-m@ilerplus, you can use the Pocket Dock-
it to transfer* its Address Book entries to the E3 e-m@iler (see page 121 for
instructions). However, you cannot transfer the setup data from the e-m@iler or
e-m@ilerplus to the E3 e-m@iler, or vice versa.
*Postal addresses and ringtone groups are not transferred.

Registration
Setting up for use
The e-m@iler offers many setup options covering all aspects of operation from display
brightness to personal user settings. These setup options are described in the chapter
entitled 'Advanced settings' (page 119) and can be carried out later.
For now, you need only carry out the registration process in order to be able to start
using the e-m@iler straight away.
Registration must be carried out when you first set up the e-m@iler. Although
registration will take ten minutes or so, it's a straightforward process and should only
need to be carried out once in full. The purpose of registration is to set up an account
between you and the Email Service Provider, which is like a worldwide sorting office
for email, handling thousands of messages every second. Your Email Service Provider
is Amserve.
Email is delivered to an email address (an example of an email address is
[email protected]). In the same way that anyone wishing to phone you
needs your telephone number, people who wish to email you require your email
address. This address is set up during registration and identifies you personally as an
email user.
Before starting registration, please read the section entitled 'Conditions for
Amserve' on page 155. During registration you'll be asked to confirm that you
accept these conditions – if you don't accept them, you will not be registered
and you will not be able to use the e-m@iler.

Registration
- 13 -
You must read this!
Before starting registration, it's essential you learn which keys you must press in order
to respond to the various screen displays. (Once you learn this, you'll also know how to
use most of the other e-m@iler functions.)
For registration use the pull-out keyboard which slides out from under the
e-m@iler.
On many of the screen displays you will be asked to press a key. For example, the
display may ask you to Press [EMAIL] or Press [ENTER] to continue or
Press H etc. In these cases, simply follow the instructions on the screen.
On some screens there are different items to select. To move to
the item you want, watch the screen while using the arrow
keys LvRat the bottom right of the keyboard.
As you move around the display using LvR, you will come across the following types
of item:
♦ Highlighted text – as you move up or down to certain items, you will see the text
highlighted inside a solid block (for example lDNextl). When you move away
from the item, it becomes un-highlighted (for example lDNextl).
♦ Blobbed items – as you move onto these items, the blob appears solid ●or
highlighted . When you move away from the item, it becomes un-blobbed (for
example #).
When you want to select the item you've moved to, you press
the ENTER key at the right of the keyboard.
When you use LvRto move into a text box, you are then expected to type some text
into the box. Note you will see a thin line |within the box – this line is called the cursor
and it shows you where you're about to type.
When you are typing text into the boxes, you can delete any
mistakes using the !DEL key at the top right of the keyboard.
Note you can move the cursor left and right within the text using
keys Land R.
To move up and down from box to box, use keys Uand D.

Registration
- 14 -
Important notes
♦ During registration you MUST NOT pick up the telephone handset (or any
extension phone). Carry out registration at a time when no-one else will be
using the phone.
♦ During registration, if you see 'rolling' numbers 10101010 or a rotating clock
$at the top left of the display, this means that the e-m@iler is
communicating via the internet. Always wait for 10101010 or $to disappear
before continuing.
♦ Note that sometimes it takes a few seconds for the entire screen to be
displayed. Always make sure the screen appears in full before continuing.
CPS (Carrier Pre-Selection)
If you are using the e-m@iler on a BT telephone line but with an alternative network
service provider, CPS can be used to determine the optimum network for carrying the
various types of calls you make. If you are operating CPS, then during the registration
procedure…
♦ at step 3, press letter O (for Office), and
♦ at step 8, type in 1280 as the prefix number.
Doing this will make the e-m@iler dial the prefix 1280 (in order to disable CPS
temporarily) before any call for email, texting, faxing, surfing, services or games.
Choosing your email address
During registration you will be asked to choose a username – this forms the first part
of your email address. When choosing a username, please bear in mind the following.
Junk email (known as 'spam') is becoming an ever-greater nuisance these days (note
that spam is unauthorised and has nothing to do with Amstrad/Amserve). Spam is sent
by various e-marketing companies, some of whom send spam speculatively – they
automatically generate every conceivable username from [email protected] to
[email protected], so it helps if you have a longer username or one which
contains a dot or a dash or numbers – these are less likely to be auto-generated. If you
do receive spam, never reply to it – even if the message contains an 'unsubscribe'
option or address. Replying to spam will alert the company that they have contacted a
valid email address, after which they will send you even more spam.
