4.2 OpticalSensing
OpticalD.O.measurementemploysatechnique called
“fluorescencequenching”inordertomeasuremolecular
oxygen.The sensorwill respond tooxygen eitherintheair
ordissolved inwater.
Apolymerelementattheendofthe sensorcontainsan
embeddedfluorescent dye.Whenthe elementisexposedto
apulseoflightfroman internalLED,the materialinthe
polymerwill fluoresce,oremitlightatanotherwavelength.
Thislightdecreases(orisquenched)atarateproportional
tothe amountofoxygen inthe polymer.The monitor
measurestherateatwhichthisquenchingoccursand
calculatestheoxygen concentrationbased on the
measurement.
Opticaloxygen sensorsprovide the abilitytomeasure
oxygen instagnantwater,and arenotaffected bycertain
kindsofnon-biologicalcoatings.However,opticalsensors
areaffectedbybiologicallyactivecoatingsand mustbe kept
clean.Inactivated sludgeapplications,biologicalfilmscan
haveamuchlowerD.O. concentration onthesensorsideof

cleaningsystemintegrated intothe Q45Dsystemwill
eliminatecoatingproblemsbycleaningthesensoron a
regularprogrammed schedule.
