AKM AK4382 digital-to-analog con-
vertersthat operate up to 24 bit x 192
kHz–providingextraordinarydecoding
capability. In addition, the exceptional
AKM AK5383 analog-to-digital devices
will convert any analog input (i.e.,
your favorite analog recordings) to
digital,withclarity,purityandprecision
at up to 24-bit x 88.2 kHz resolution!
THX®Ultra
The THX®Ultra certified AVM 20 now
includes both Home THX®Cinema™
and also the breathtaking sound of
THX®Surround EX™ with additional
leftrear andright rearoutputs – both
RCA and Balanced-XLR – for up to 7.1
sound.Clarityanddimensional preci-

Four Paths
The AVM 20 makes it possible to do
fourthings,simultaneously,inseparate
listening areas throughout your home,
offeringmore flexibilitythan ever! The
Main path provides Video and multi-
channel Audio for music and home
theater.The Zone2 and Zone 3paths
provide Video and 2-channel Audio
output with volume, tone and balance
controls that operate fully independ-
ently.Finally,theRecordpathprovides
Video, 2-channel Analog-Audio and
Digital-Audiorecordoutputsselectable
by source. With the addition of an
external Preamplifier or Receiver,
the Record path can alternatively
be used as a fourth zone.

The AVM 20 offers three Audio-In
Format choices when selecting a
Main-Path source:
1. Digital
This is the mandatory choice for any
source component where Dolby®
Digital or DTS®decoding is required
(i.e., DVD-Video).
2. Analog-Direct
(Bypasses A/D’s, DSP and D/A's)
Analog-Direct provides a ‘purist’
audiophile input that bypasses Bass
Management, Tone Controls and
Mode Selection.
3. Analog-DSP
(Enables A/D’s, DSP and D/A's)
The AVM 20 also gives you a third
option– Analog-DSP,which provides
true audiophile grade inputs and
engagesall BassManagement, Tone
Controls and Mode selection.
Analog-DSPnotonlyoperates for all
2-channelsources,butitevenoperates
with 6-Channel source components
such as multi-channel DVD-Audio
and SACD.

It’s Never Been Easier to Set Up
Your System
TheAVM20 gives youthefreedomto
do all of the Bass Management in
one place. Start with completely
independent setup selections for
eachspeaker in yoursystem– large
or small, and for surrounds/rears
we’ve even included large dipole or
small dipole, which automatically
adjusts the listener position settings
forthereverberantsoundfieldprovided
by dipole speakers. Then set the
crossover point, which determines
the low-frequency cut-off for all
speakers set to small and the high-
frequency cut-off for the subwoofer.
And finally, you can choose to have
yoursubwoofer engaged, evenif you
have set other speakers to large. This
isparticularlyuseful becauseitallows
youto useyoursubwooferwithstereo
source material!
Bass Peak Level
Theloudestpartofamoviesoundtrack
isoftenLFE bass. TheBassPeakLevel
Manager‘looksahead’atthe basssig-
nal and reduces the risk of speaker
overload by tailoring bass output to
match your speakers’ capabilities.

Record Analog Sources
to CD – And Quietly!
With a source set to Analog-DSP, the
AVM 20's built in A/D's provide an
extraordinarily quiet digital record
output(-100 dBvs. -69 dB for typical
computer sound cards), selectable
to 16 bit x 44.1 kHz or 24 bit x88.2 kHz.
With an external CD-R burner you
can use external phono stages, tape
decks or the internal tuner to record
audiophile-quality CDs.
Source Equalization
Not all sources have the same
frequency balance. Your favorite FM
station,forexample,mayhaveboosted
highfrequenciestosoundmorepromi-
nent when scanning (i.e. in a car). Or
perhaps your TV’s output sounds
somewhat dull making it harder to
understand. The AVM 20 has the
perfect solution for all of these ail-
ments – Source Equalization. This
allows you to apply independent
low-frequency and high-frequency
settingsfor eachsource. Andyou can
stilluse thetone controls tomake ‘on-
the-fly’ adjustments for any program
material as may be required.
Ten Outputs – 7.1 Plus Second
Center/Second Subwoofer
The AVM 20 provides incredibly
musical, spacious and accurate
surround sound! In some installations
you may want to add a second center
channel speaker – either above and
below, or oneithersideof your video
monitor. You may also want to add a
second subwoofer. The AVM 20
makes it easy with additional output
connections built-in – both for RCA
and Balanced-XLR.
YoucanevenhaveoneAVM20operate
two complete 7.1 systems. Since
eachsetofoutputsoperatesconcur-
rently, the Balanced-XLR outputs
can be connected to a system in one
room,and the RCAoutputs connected
to a different system in another. Use
the Triggers in the Setup Menu to
control when room ‘A’ amplifiers or
room ‘B’ amplifiers turn on or off
with a selected source, and you can
have a second home theater system
operating with ease.

(RCA-S/PDIF):
Digital-1: Any source selected in
Mainis also directedtothis output. If
that source is set to Digital, the digital
signalwillsimplypassthroughtothis
output. If it is set to Analog-DSP, the
analog signal will be converted to
digital (selectable to either 16 bit x
44.1 kHz or 24 bit x 88.2 kHz) and
directed to this output. If the source
is set to Analog-Direct, there is no
digital output.
Digital-2: This output is directly
assignableto any sourceset to Digital
where it will simply pass through to
this output, or it can be set to copy
the Digital-1 output.
2-CHANNEL - IN (BALANCED)
REC-OUT
Balanced Outputs for Zone 2
The second center/second sub-
woofer Balanced-XLR outputs can
alternatively be assigned to Zone 2
Left/Right. This is particularly useful
in maintaining low noise when
running longer low-level wiring for
this Zone. Even when these outputs
are assigned to Zone 2, you can still
connect a second center/second
subwoofer by using their respective
RCA outputs.
Three Powered IR Inputs
Two IR Emitter Outputs
All three infra-red inputs can now be
self-powered with their own 12-V
power supply, eliminating the need
for the costly external power supply
required to power IR repeaters. As
well,tworear-panelinfra-red emitter
outputsmakeiteasytoremotecontrol
your source components (CD, DVD)
from another room.
‘Highest’ High-Definition
Video Switching
When it comes to video processing,
incredible is putting it mildly! The
AVM 20 now boasts an astonishing
high-definition video processing
capability, allowing you to switch,
without degradation, two inputs right
up to the full 1080 p progressive video
standard. Functionality, without any
penalty in performance!
More Video Outputs
More On-Screen Displays
Five S-Video outputs and five
Composite (RCA) outputs give you
the flexibility to connect multiple
video displays/components through-
out your home. Even the Tape record
output has S-Video and Composite
Video outputs to allow recording onto
a second VCR. And accessing the
Setup Menu has never been easier
with the On-Screen display which is
now available simultaneously in both
S-Video and Composite formats and
concurrently in the Main listening
room as well as Zone 2.
Independent Group Audio Delay
Theterrificimprovementinaudio/video
signal alignment introduced by the
AVM 2’sGroupAudio Delay has been
taken a step further in the AVM 20.
Now, Group Audio Delay can be set
independently by source – each
video source component can have
an individual Group Audio Delay, set
according to its requirements.
Selectable Background Color
In keeping with the AVM 20’s easy-
to-use, just ‘plug’n play’ philosophy,
the Setup Menu’s background color
can now be changed from Blue to
MagentaorBlack,toallowforcorrect
‘sync’ with various video monitors
or projectors.
