Select Switch
The Select Switch is a battery-powered switch with
function control features that enables individuals to
communicate and control battery-operated appliances,
toys, and devices. The switch was designed by APH to be
used in learning applications and daily living skills.
Introduction
The Select Switch enables switch operation of battery-
operated devices. The Select Switch includes features
that make it useful for individuals with severe motor
disabilities and cognitive impairments.

Mode of Control
The Select Switch provides four types of appliance
control:Directmode,TimedSecondsmode,Timed
Minutes mode, and Latch mode. Prior to using the
SelectSwitchandchoosingaModeofControl,therst-
time switch user should consult with a professional
whoisqualiedtoassesstheabilitiesandlimitations
ofthelearner.Considerallthelearner’sdisabilitiesand
impairmentsandreviewthelearner’sgoals.
Direct
TheDirectmodekeepstheapplianceononly while
theswitchisactivated(presseddown).Manyrst-time
switch users prefer this mode. A learner enjoys the
breeze created by the fan on her wheelchair tray. She
learnsthatshecontrolsthefan/breezebykeepingthe
switch pressed down.
To select, turn the mode knob to the Direct position.
The timer knob is not used in this mode. The appliance
will turn on only while the switch is activated (pressed
down) and will turn off when the switch is released.
Timed Seconds
The Timed Seconds mode allows the appliance to run
for a preset amount of time, from 1 to 60 seconds, with
a single activation. For example, set a noise-making

toy rooster for the desired number of seconds. When
it stops, watch closely for the learner to cue you to
continue and then activate the switch again. Teach the
learner to activate the switch. This mode can also be
used to teach vocational and daily living skills like cutting
paper with adapted, battery-operated scissors.
To select, turn the mode knob to the Timed Seconds
(S) position, and the timer knob to the number of
seconds you wish the appliance to remain on. When the
time has expired, the Select Switch will automatically
turn off the appliance even if the user is still pressing
the switch.
Timed Minutes
The Timed Minutes mode allows the appliance to run for
a preset amount of time, from 1 to 60 minutes, with a

single activation. This mode is useful for lengthier, self-
activated routines such as using a battery-operated
massager, using a battery-operated vibrating pad, or
activating a battery-operated bubble blowing machine.
To select, turn the mode knob to the Timed Minutes
(M) position, and the timer knob to the number of
minutes you wish the appliance to remain on. When
the time has expired, the Select Switch will turn off the
appliance even if the user is still pressing the switch.
If you do not want to wait for the set
time to expire, turn the Mode knob
to any other Mode of Control and the
appliance will shut off.

Latch
TherstactivationoftheswitchturnstheapplianceON;
thesecondactivationturnsitOFF.TheLatchmodecan
be used when an individual wants to listen to music on
abattery-operatedCDplayerforanextendedlength
of time.
To select, turn the lower knob to the Latch position. The
timer knob is not used in this mode. The appliance will
turn on when the switch is activated, and turn off when
it is activated again.
Setting Up
1. Insert the required batteries in the Select Switch
and in the appliance, toy, or device.

2. InserttheSelectSwitch’smonoplugintothe
receiving jack of the appliance, toy, or device.
3. TurntheappliancetotheONorPLAYposition.
Foranappliancewithpressure-sensitiveON/OFF
control,likeacoffeegrinder,tapetheappliance’s
controlbutton/switchintheONposition.
5. Select a Mode of Control on the Select Switch.
6. Activate the switch.
7. Whennished,alwaysturntheOn/Off/Modeknob
counter clockwise until it stops. This will extend
the life of the batteries.
Neverconnectheat-producing
appliances to the Select Switch.
Troubleshooting
If the equipment fails to operate after you have
followed the set-up instructions, use the troubleshooting
suggestions listed below. If the problem persists, call
APH Technical Support at 1-800-223-1839 (U.S.) or
1-502-895-2405.
1. Move the Polarity switch to the opposite side.

2. Check all mono plug and jack connections to
makesurethattheyareinplacermly.
3. MakesurethattheON/OFFswitchonthe
applianceisturnedON.Iftheappliancehasa
pressure-sensitive switch, tape the switch in the
ONposition.
4. Check to see if the timer knob and the mode knob
show the desired length of time and the type
of control.
Ifyou’veconnectedanapplianceanditfailstoturnon,
try the following:
1. Check the switch by plugging it into another
battery-operated appliance or toy.
2. Check the appliance by plugging it into
another switch.
Adapter Plate
The Select Switch comes with an adapter plate to
provide a smooth option for individuals who do not like
the bumpy tactile plate. Just clip the smooth plate over
the tactile plate. To remove, grasp the edges of the
smooth plate with one hand, slightly twist and lift at
the same time. Many tactile options can be adhered to
thesmoothplateusingVelcro®or other temporary and
permanent adhesives.

Safety
1. Read the instructions for all appliances, toys, and
devices before using them with the Select Switch.
2. Use caution when placing any appliance
near a user (especially appliances that have
moving parts).
3. Keep the Select Switch and all appliances away
from water and moisture.
4. DonotopentheSelectSwitchtoexpose
its interior.
5. To prevent injury, always unplug the appliance
from the switch jack before opening the lid to a
battery-operated device with moving parts.
6. Keeptheoorclearofcordstoavoidtripsand
falls, and to prevent the Select Switch or a
connected appliance from being pulled to the
oor.Positionallcordsnearthewallawayfrom
walkways and children.
Storage and Care
1. Ifcleaningisrequired,rstdisconnecttheSelect
Switch from the appliance. Use a damp cloth to
wipe the surface.

2. NeverlifttheSelectSwitchbythemonoplug
cord. When storing or packing for transport, use
the original shipping box or wrap the switch in
protective padding.
3. Alwaysunplugallswitcheswhennotinuse;
however, the Select Switch may be left
connected to a frequently used appliance for the
user’sconvenience.

6. Mantenga el piso limpio de hilos y cuerdas

Placa de Adaptador
El Interruptor Selecto contiene una chapa de
adaptador que es lisa para los que no les gusta la placa
desnivelada. Solo sujete la placa lisa sobre la placa
táctil. Para quitarla, agarre los bordes de la placa lisa
con una mano, gírela un poco y levántela a la vez.
Muchas opciones táctiles se pueden adherir a la placa
lisa utilizando Velcro®u otros adhesivos temporarios
o permanentes.
Seguridad
1. Lea las instrucciones para cada aparato, juguete,
y dispositivo antes de usarlos con el Interruptor
Selecto.
2. Cuando se pone cualquier aparato cerca de un
usuario, hágalo con cuidado (especialmente los
aparatos que tengan partes que se mueven).
3. Mantenga el Interruptor Selecto y todos los

Localización y Solución de Problemas
Si el equipo le falla y no funciona después de que usted
haya seguido las instrucciones de instalación, use las
sugerencias de localizar y solucionar los problemas que
hemos listado más abajo. Si el problema continúa, llame
al Soporte Técnico de APH a 1-800-223-1839 (EEUU) o a
1-502-895-2405.
1. Mueva el interruptor de Polaridad al otro lado.
2. Revise todas las conexiones del enchufe mono y
otras conexiones de recepción para asegurar que
estén bien conectados.
3. Asegure de que el interruptor de PRENDER/
APAGAR del aparato Esté PRENDIDO. Si el aparato
tiene un interruptor que es sensible a la presión,
oprímele con cinta para que esté PRENDIDO.
4. Revise si la perilla del temporizador y la perilla
de modo demuestren la cantidad de tiempo que
usted quiere, y el tipo de control.
Si usted ha conectado un aparato y no se prende,
intente lo siguiente:
1. Revise el interruptor por conectarlo a otro aparato
o juguete que se impulsa por pilas.
2. Revise el aparato por enchufarlo en
otro interruptor.

Instalando
1. Introduzca las pilas requeridas en el
Interruptor Selecto y en el aparato, juguete o
dispositivo también.
2. Introduzca el enchufe mono en el punto de
conexión de recepción del aparato, juguete,
o dispositivo.
3. Prenda el aparato o oprima donde indica ON
(prender) o PLAY (tocar). Para un aparato que
tiene un control de prender/apagar que es
sensible a la presión, como un molinillo de café,
oprima y mantenga el control oprimido con cinta
para que se quede prendido.
4. Seleccione un Modo de Control en su
Interruptor Selecto.
5. Active el interruptor.
6. Cuando usted termine, siempre gire la perilla de
Prendido/Apagado/Modo en sentido horario hasta
que se pare. Así se puede extender la duración de
las pilas.
Nunca conecte aparatos que emiten
calor al Interruptor Selecto.

Si no quiere esperar que el tiempo
predeterminado se acabe, gire la
perilla de Modo a cualquier otro Modo
de Control y el aparato se apagará.
Cierre
La primera vez que usted active el interruptor SE
PRENDE el aparato; la segunda vez, SE APAGA. El modo
de Cierre se puede usar cuando una persona quiere
escuchar música en un tocador de discos compactos
impulsado por pilas por una cantidad más larga
de tiempo.
Para usar, gire la perilla inferior a la posición de Cierre.
La perilla del temporizador no se usa en este modo. El
aparato se prenderá cuando se activa el interruptor, y se
apagará cuando se activa otra vez.

Minutos Temporizados
El modo de Minutos Temporizados le permite al aparato
que funcione por una cantidad predeterminada de
tiempo, de 1 hasta 60 minutos, con una sola activación.
Este modo se usa para rutinas auto-activadas que toman
más tiempo. Por ejemplo, cuando se usa un aparato de
masajes que se impulsa por pilas, una placa que vibra
que es impulsado por pilas, o una maquina que hace
burbujas que se impulsa por pilas.
Para usar, gire la perilla de modo hacia la posición
de Minutos Temporizados (M), y la perilla del
temporizador hacia la cantidad de minutos que usted
quiere que el aparato se mantenga prendido. Cuando
se acaban los minutos, el Interruptor Selecto apagará
el aparato automáticamente, aunque el usuario sigue
oprimiendo el interruptor.

Segundos Temporizados
El modo de Segundos Temporizados le permite al
aparato que funcione por una cantidad predeterminada
de tiempo, de 1 hasta 60 segundos, con una sola
activación. Por ejemplo, congure un juguete que hace
ruidos como un gallo por una cantidad de segundos.
Cuando se detiene, observe que el usuario le señale
activar el interruptor de nuevo. Enseñe al usuario que
active el interruptor. Este modo también se puede usar
para enseñar habilidades profesionales y cotidianas
como cortando papeles con tijeras adaptadas e
impulsadas con pilas.
Para seleccionar, gire la perilla hacia la posición de
modo Segundos Temporizados (S), y la perilla del
temporizador hacia la cantidad de segundos que usted
quiere que el aparato se mantenga prendido. Cuando se
acaban los segundos, el Interruptor Selecto le apagará
al aparato automáticamente, aunque el usuario sigue
oprimiéndole al interruptor.
