General Precautions
A) Elevated Operating Ambient - If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating
ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consid-
eration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum
ambient temperature (Tma) specified by the manufacturer.
B) Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air
flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
C) Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous
condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.
D) Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the
supply circuit and the effect that overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and
supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when ad-
dressing this concern.
E) Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular
attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit
(e.g. use of power strips).
Slots and openings on the WorldCast Equinox are provided for ventilation that is needed to ensure
reliable operation. To avoid overheating and ensure that the ventilation slots are not blocked, place
the WorldCast Equinox on a smooth, hard surface that has at least five cm (two inches) of clearance
around the unit and adequate air circulation. If the equipment is placed in a closed area, such as a
rack or a case, ensure that proper ventilation is provided and that the internal rack operating temper-
ature does not exceed the maximum rated temperature at the location of the WorldCast Equinox.
F) Radio Interference –Class A ITE Warning - This is a class A product. In a domestic environment
this product may cause radio interference in which case the user may be required to take adequate
measures.

3. WORLDCAST EQUINOX AT A GLANCE
This section provides an overview of the WorldCast Equinox and outlines how you can start using the World-
Cast Equinox to send audio. Section 3 contains more detailed information on the operation of the front panel
menu system and how WorldCast Equinox can be controlled by the WorldCast Codec Management System.
3.1. Introduction
The WorldCast Equinox is a full duplex, multi-algorithm audio codec offering conventional analog left and right
audio connections and AES/EBU digital audio connections operating through both fixed line X.21/V.35, dial up
ISDN, IP and SIP data interfaces. The WorldCast Equinox incorporates the enhanced versions of the apt-X®
algorithm (reducing data transmission on the network by a factor of 4 to 1), and MPEG 3 for connectivity com-
patibility.
The unit is capable of delivering high quality audio used for inter-studio networking, remote/outside broadcasts
and STL/TSL applications. It is suitable for use in either AM, FM, DAB and many other broadcast and profes-
sional audio environments. Enhanced apt-X®offers 16 and 24 bit operation as an improvement over the per-
formance of the original standard 16 bit apt-x®algorithm. This has advantages for users involved in audio track
mastering applications requiring increased bandwidth and dynamic range.
Audio modes and bandwidths are dependent on the network bit rate, the algorithm, mode and frequency re-
sponse selected and the bit resolution of the desired audio. Bandwidths will range from 3.81kHz to 22.86kHz in
stereo mode and 7.62kHz to 24.38kHz when set for mono operation, the minimum usable bandwidth 24 bit en-
hanced apt-X® is 15kHz mono at 168kbit/s.
In an application where program continuity and integrity is required then the WorldCast Equinox can be config-
ured with one interface port (X.21 or IP) as the primary port and the another interface port as the secondary
port. If the connection to the primary port fails then the WorldCast Equinox will automatically switch to use the
secondary port.
The WorldCast Equinox is fully software driven, being menu controlled, configured and monitored through the
optional front panel keyboard and LCD display or via APT's WorldCast Codec Management System which runs
on a PC connected via LAN or WAN. A headphone socket provides for additional monitoring of the audio input
or output. The rear panel audio I/O's can be switched to accept either analog or digital signals and if required
the digital output can be synchronized with an external digital reference signal.
Additional interfaces allow for the connection of auxiliary data, alarms and opto-coupled control inputs.
3.2. Options
The following hardware options are available:
Dual IP port: dedicate one port to transport and one to monitoring.
Redundant PSU: increase the reliability of your codec.
Full Front Panel: directly set and control your codec. (Not available on Astral)
Partial Front Panel: Visual Monitoring of your codec
Algorithm packages will be available with future releases.

3.3. Getting Connected
* With front panel option only.
The remainder of this chapter outlines how you can quickly connect your WorldCast Equinox and start sending
audio. The following chapter describes all of the interfaces, and in more detail. In this chapter we simply cover
the basics of getting started.
Begin by connecting mains power to the unit. Switch on the power switch located next to the power connector
and the unit will start its power up self test (you will hear the cooling fan start and the Power LED on the front
panel will be lit).
After a short time the LCD display on the front panel will display the idle screen for the mode that the World-
Cast Equinox is operating in (X.21, ISDN, IP or SIP).

To make a connection and send audio you must
set the WorldCast Equinox for analog or digital audio
select interface type
set the audio profile
connect audio and network interfaces
3.4. Using the front panel keypad
* With front panel option only.
The front panel display and keypad are used to manually control the
WorldCast Equinox. To switch to the configuration menus press the Menu
key –the Main Setup User menu will be displayed.
Pressing Menu again will switch to the Main Setup Network menu and
again to the Main Setup Audio menu. When you arrive at the menu you want use the or keys to move to
and highlight the option you want to change and press Ent. Sub-menus will allow you to change individual pa-
rameters. To go back a step in the menu structure press the Esc key.

3.5. Selecting analog or digital audio
* With front panel option only.
Move to the Main Setup Audio menu by pressing Menu until the following screen appears: -
Audio configuration screen
Press the key to move to the Audio I/O option and press Ent. You are then presented with a choice of ei-
ther analog or digital audio –select the appropriate entry and press Ent.
Audio connectors on rear panel
The audio connections are made on the rear panel using XLR-3 connectors. The XLR-3 connector for left ana-
log audio in is also used for digital audio in.
Note: The WorldCast Equinox will still provide analog audio output when switched to digital audio.
This has the added benefit in that you can use simultaneous analog monitoring of the digital outputs.
Now press Esc to get back to the Idle screen.
3.6. Selecting an audio profile
* With front panel option only.
The following instructions allow you to select the codec algorithm, bit rate and network interface type.
Caution: These instructions will work only if you are in administrator mode –this is the default setting
when the WorldCast Equinox units are shipped from the factory. If you are not in administrator mode
then the codec algorithm and bit rate can only be selected from a predefined profile.
Move to the Main Menu AUDIO screen by pressing the Menu key until the following screen appears: -

3.7. Setting loopback
* With front panel option only.
Using loopback is a good way to perform a quick check on the functionality of the unit and that your cabling is
correct. To put the WorldCast Equinox unit into loopback press the Menu key until the following screen is dis-
played: -

Use the and keys to highlight Loopback Mode and press Ent. The Loopback Mode Setup menu will
now be displayed.
Loopback setup screen
Use the and keys to highlight Local Loop and press Ent. This will enable the local loopback –audio
present on the audio inputs (i.e. local XLR connectors) will be routed through the internal encoder and then
looped back into the decoder and then to the audio outputs (i.e. local XLR connectors).
Note: If you are using digital audio analog audio output will also still be available - as will the audio
monitoring headset on the front panel.
Whenever you want to cancel the loopback repeat the above instructions but choose Loop Off and press Ent.
