MUST BE STRICTLY OBSERVED WHEN HANDLING
AND USING A TEST INSTRUMENT.

1.RESET BUTTON: Red momentary contact switch used to reset the
instrument in case of a failure or to proceed to the next test. Also
serves as an abort signal to stop any test in progress.
2.TEST BUTTON: Green momentary contact switch used to start tests.
3.GRAPHIC LCD: 240 x 64 monographic LCD.
4.NUMERIC DATA ENTRY: Keys used to enter numeric data.
5.CONTINUITY OUTPUT TERMINAL: Connection for the low current return
lead used for continuity testing.
6.RETURN OUTPUT TERMINAL: Connector used to attach the black return
test lead to the instrument. This connection provides the return
current path for the high voltage.
7.POWER SWITCH: Rocker style power switch with International
ON ( I ) and OFF (O) markings.
8.SOFT KEYS: Multi-function parameter selection keys used to select
screens and change parameters.
9.EXIT KEY: Key used to escape from parameter editing and returning to
prior screens.
10.ENTER KEY: Key used to finalize parameter entries. The ENTER key
may also be used to scroll the highlighted area to different
parameters in the parameter setting screens.
11.HIGH VOLTAGE ON INDICATOR: Flashing indicator to warn the
operator high voltage is present.
12.HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT TERMINAL: Connector used to attach the red
high voltage test lead or adapter box high voltage lead to the
instrument.

BACKPANELCONTROLS
1.BUS INTERFACE: Standard connector for interconnection to the USB/RS-232
Bus interface. Optional IEEE–4 interface or Ethernet Interface may be
substituted for the USB/RS-232.
2.CALIBRATION BUTTON: Used to put the instrument into calibration mode.
3.REMOTE SIGNAL INPUT: 9-Pin D sub-miniature male connector for remote
control of test, reset, and interlock functions, as well as remote program
memory selection.
4.REMOTE SIGNAL OUTPUT: 9-Pin D sub-miniature female connector for
monitoring pass, fail, processing and reset out output relay signals.
5.SCANNER CONNECTOR: For connection of optional External Scanning
Matrix.
6.HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT TERMINAL: Connector used to attach the high
voltage test lead, adapter box high voltage lead, or test fixture high
voltage lead to the instrument. The connector is recessed for safety.
7.RETURN OUTPUT TERMINAL: Connector used to attach the return test lead or
test fixture return lead to the instrument. This connection provides the
return current path for the high voltage and continuity tests.
8.CONTINUITY OUTPUT TERMINAL: Connection for the low current return lead
or three-prong receptacle adapter box used for continuity testing.
9.FUSE RECEPTACLE: Socket for the input power fuse. See operation and
service manual for ratings and replacement instructions.
10.SCANNER OUTPUTS: Optional scanner matrix that provides HV,
Continuity, or Return connections. Please refer to the options section of the
product manual for additional connection information.
11.INPUT POWER RECEPTACLE: Standard IEC 320 connector for connection
to a standard NEMA style line power (mains) cord.
12.CHASSIS GROUND (EARTH) TERMINAL: This terminal should be
connected to a good earth ground before operation.

INSTRUMENTSETUP
The HypotULTRA III is automatically set to run an AC Hipot test at factory default
parameters. However, you may choose to perform an AC Hipot, DC Hipot, Insulation
Resistance or Continuity test. Each test type has its own set of default parameters.

CHANGINGTHETYPEOFTEST
1. Connect the line cord into the rear of the instrument and plug the male end of the
cord into a grounded power source.
2. Plug the interlock connector into the Signal Input connector on the rear panel of the
instrument. HypotULTRA III is equipped with a Remote Interlock feature, which utilizes
a set of closed contacts to enable the instrument’s output. In order to perform a test,
the interlock connector must be plugged into the Signal Input connection on the rear
panel of the instrument.
3. Turn the POWER switch to ON.
The initialization screen will appear. After three seconds the Perform Test
screen will appear. (See Figure 1.)
WARNING: LOCATE A SUITABLE TESTING AREA WITH A THREE-
PRONG, GROUNDED OUTLET. BE SURE THAT YOUR THREE-PRONG OUTLET HAS
BEEN TESTED FOR PROPER WIRING. ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU READ THE SAFETY
CHECKLIST OF THIS GUIDE BEFORE STARTING TO TEST.

EDITING TEST PARAMETERS FROM EDIT BUTTON
You can edit the test parameters by pressing the “Edit” soft key from the Perform Test
screen.
On the Test Parameters screen the test type will be highlighted.(See Figure 2.) Press
the “Edit” soft key to edit the type of test.
A second Edit Menu screen will appear. Press the “Change” soft key to toggle to the
desired test.
Once you have reached the desired test, press the ENTER k ey to save.
You may continue to toggle through the test parameters in the Edit Menu screens by
pressing the ENTER key.
Press EXIT to go back to the Test Parameter screen and press EXIT again to go back to
the Perform Test screen.

CHANGING SYSTEM SETTINGS
From the Perform Test screen press the “More” soft key. A second set of selections
will now be displayed.
Press the “System” soft key.
At the Setup System Menu you may highlight the parameter you wish to edit by
using the “Arrow” soft keys ( ,,,).
When you have highlighted the parameter you wish to edit, press the “Edit” soft
key to enter the System Parameter Edit screen. To edit numeric parameters simply
use the numeric key pad on the front panel. Time or date parameters require the
“Edit” soft key to be pressed and settings that require a selection of choices need
the “Change” soft key to be pressed. Press the ENTER key to save.
The next editable parameter will now be displayed. Continue to press the ENTER
key to toggle through each editable parameter.
You may press EXIT at any time to go back to the Setup System Menu. Press EXIT
again to go back to the Perform Test screen.

SELECTINGATESTMEMORY
From the Perform Test screen press the “Memory” soft key. The Memory Recall screen
will now be displayed.
There are two methods to select a memory: Enter a Number or List and Scroll.
ENTER A NUMBER
Enter the number with the numeric key pad that you would like to use.
Press the ENTER key to accept the new number or the EXIT key to escape from the
edit and return to the original memory location.
Once you press the ENTER key, the memory location and all of its steps will be
loaded into the instrument’s active memory and the Perform Test screen will be
displayed.
LIST AND SCROLL
Press the “List” soft key and scroll to the desired memory by pressing the “Arrow” soft
keys ( , , Page , Page ). When you have reached the desired memory,
press the ENTER key to accept the new number or the EXIT key to escape from the
edit and return to the original memory location.
Once you press the ENTER key, the memory location and all of its steps will be
loaded into the instrument’s active memory and the Perform Test screen will be
displayed.

From the Perform Test screen, press the “Memory” soft key. The Memory Recall
screen will now be displayed.
At the Memory Recall screen, press the “Name” soft key. The character map will
now be displayed.
Use the “Arrow” soft keys ( ,,), to select the desired character.
Press the “Select” soft key to choose the character.
Press ENTER after the memory name is complete.
The current test parameters will now be saved to this location and the Memory Recall
screen will now be displayed.

ADAPTER BOX CONNECTION
The adapter box provides an easy way to connect the HypotULTRA III to a device
under test (DUT) terminated in a two- or three-prong line cord. The following diagram
shows how to connect the adapter box to the HypotULTRA III and to the DUT.

Plug the black cord from the adapter box into the Continuity Check terminal and the
cord with a white connector from the adapter box into the High Voltage terminal
located on the front panel.
Plug one of the black ground return leads into the Return terminal also on the front
panel of the instrument.
Connect the ground return clip to dead metal on the chassis of the DUT. Always check
to make sure a good connection is made between the DUT and the return clip.
Plug the line cord of the DUT into the adapter box receptacle.
The rear output connections may also be used for connecting the adapter box.

TEST LEAD CONNECTION
If there is no ground circuit on your DUT, you may use the test leads to connect the
HypotULTRA III to your DUT. The Continuity function must be turned OFF for this
connection. (See Figure 4.)
Plug one of the black ground return leads into the Return terminal on the front panel
of the instrument. Then connect the high voltage lead terminated in a red clip into
the High Voltage terminal on the front panel of the instrument.
Attach the clip-terminated end of the return lead to the dead metal on the chassis of
the DUT. Always check to make sure a good connection is made between the DUT
and the return clip.
Attach the high voltage lead to the current-carrying conductors of the DUT.
After the proper connections have been made, you can initiate a test through the
front panel of the HypotULTRA III by pressing the green TEST button. The red RESET
button will abort a test in process.

RESULTS
VIEWING TEST RESULTS
From the Perform Test screen, press the “More” soft key. A second set of selections
will now be displayed. Press the “Result” soft key to view results. (See Figure 5.)
SELECTING THE RESULTS SETTING
From the Perform Test screen, press the “More” soft key. A second set of selections
will now be displayed.
Press the “System” soft key.
Using the “Arrow” soft keys ( ,,,), scroll to the results parameter and
press the “Edit” soft key.
Use the “Change” soft key to select how the results will be displayed.
Press the ENTER key to save.
The available selections are: All, P/F and Last.
When All is selected, a Results Summary screen will be displayed.
When P/F is selected, a Pass or Fail screen will be displayed.
When Last is selected, the results from the last step performed will be displayed.
