Introduction
If you were looking for a laptop that’s slim, light and built around the latest components and yet is
keenly priced, look no further than the ASUS VivoBook E402.
ASUS has taken the latest Intel processors in this class, added them to 4GB of RAM and a choice of
hard drive options and packed them into a lightweight yet smart chassis that’s perfect for everyday
computing.
That’s thanks to the thoughtful combination of great design, careful choice of components and
Windows 10, Microsoft’s latest operating system.
All the family will love this latest addition to ASUS’s series of affordable notebooks, whether they’re
using it for homework, for connecting with friends and loved ones, catching up on some work or
watching a movie, and they’ll love it even more for its portability. It’s a great companion to take to
work, to school, to the coffee shop or on a trip.
First impressions
The first thing you’ll notice when you take the E402 out of its box is its fantastic good looks. The
edges of the lid are gently curved, which gives the laptop a slim, elegant profile. And whichever
colour you’ve chosen, the E402 is bound to turn heads.
Shadow Blue is a smart, matte-surfaced notebook that offers understated elegance and which is
perfect for work thanks to its discreet colour.

Elegant White is the perfect choice for someone who wants an understated device that adds a dash
of style, while Urban Red is great for the student who likes their notebook to stand out from the
crowd.
As you pick it up, you’ll also notice its light weight – it’s just 1.68kg – and its slim profile. The E402 is
just 2.19cm thick and the size of an A4 sheet of paper, which means it will fit into your bag and can
easily be carried with you all day..
Great performance
The E402 might be priced for great affordability, but ASUS hasn’t skimped on components. At the
heart of your laptop is one of Intel’s latest processors: the Braswell family of CPUs. The E402 comes
with a choice of three processors:
Intel® Pentium® N3700
Intel® Celeron® N3150
Intel® Celeron® N3050

These processors offer a performance boost on the previous generation of CPUs, and their smaller
size – manufactured using Intel’s 14nm process – is one reason ASUS’s engineers have been able to
make the E402 so thin and light.
All three offer a base clock speed of 1.6GHz, while Turbo mode offers a top speed of, respectively,
2.4GHz, 2.08GHz and 2.16GHz.
These processors are known as “system on a chip” CPUs, meaning that just one small component
handles the main processing, the graphics and the sound in an efficient way. This also helps with
how your notebook draws power, contributing to its great battery life, as well as offering a great
balance between affordability and computing power.
These are teamed with 4GB of 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM. This is the short-term memory that allows
data – your files, music and photographs – to be accessed quickly so that the operating system
doesn’t have to keep accessing the hard drive. 4GB is a sweet spot between value for money and
speed, and means that your E402 can multitask efficiently: having more than a couple of applications
open won’t slow you down.
Plenty of space
The E402 comes with two choices of storage: for those who want a roomy hard drive on which to
store movies, pictures, music and documents, there’s the option of a 1TB hard disk, while for those
who prefer the speed boost of a solid state drive, ASUS offers the option of a 64GB eMMC drive.
But that’s not all: unlike many other laptops, both in this class and higher-spec devices, ASUS
engineers have added an SD card slot so that you can add to the onboard storage. Additionally, ASUS
includes 16GB of free storage for one year in the cloud with ASUS WebStorage.
This means that all your movies and files are available at your fingertips, which makes this a great
choice for someone who is constantly on the move and doesn’t want to have to remember to load
up their bag with external hard drives or USB keys. Want to watch that boxset on a flight? It’s there
on your E402.
While notebooks from other manufacturers often can’t be upgraded, it’s easy to install a bigger or
faster hard drive on the E402 thanks to the easy-access panel on the bottom. The eManual included
with the E402 provides clear and simple instructions.

Great display
Opening the lid gives you even more of a sense of how thoughtfully designed the E402 is. It sports a
14” screen, bigger than the display is on other notebooks this size, and boasting a smart narrow
bezel

The TN (Twisted Nematic) display was chosen by ASUS’s engineers to hit the sweet spot between
performance and battery power. A nematic liquid crystal is a translucent liquid crystal that is
confined between two plates of polarised glass, and a display built in this way has great response
times with decent colour reproduction. It’s a good choice for anyone who likes to play games, and
has a brightness level of 200 nits, and as an added bonus, a TN display also draws less power than
other display technologies. This means that the E402’s screen is a great choice as it contributes to its
battery life of up to 250 minutes.
TN displays are the choice of gamers, too, thanks to their fast response times. This means that there
is little or no blurring or smearing on the screen as the notebook processes what you’re doing in the
game and returns the image to the screen.
The Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 with a 16:9 resolution is the choice of gamers, as it offers a
great balance between image quality and performance from the notebook.
ASUS Tru2Life technology also makes watching movies a pleasure, too, thanks to the boost it gives to
sharpness and contrast. This makes the E402 a great choice if you want to enjoy the latest boxset or
Netflix offerings while you’re travelling – and with the roomy 1TB hard drive offered as an option,
you’ll have plenty of space onboard for your favourite films and TV shows, too.
Great graphics
ASUS engineers have chosen to install Intel’s latest Braswell processors, which handle the graphics
via their “system on a chip” construction. These offer significantly improved performance on their
predecessors, so that you’ll be able to experience smooth video if you’re watching a movie, and
faster encoding if you’re working with your own video.
And because the E402 comes with a full-sized HDMI port, you’ll also be able to expect great
performance if you hook it up to an external display, whether that’s to make a presentation at work
or to plug it in to the TV so that you can watch movies with your friends and family.

You’re in control
It’s your notebook, and thanks to the ASUS Splendid utility, you’re in control of just how the screen
looks. The Splendid utility offers four presets suitable for applications from work to watching the
latest Hollywood blockbuster, or you can fine-tune the software so that the screen is perfect for you.
There are three presets and a manual mode to choose from:

•Normal is perfect for everyday computing tasks such as browsing the web or working with
documents. It is the factory pre-set, which has been through ASUS’s careful calibration to
offer clear, accurate colours whatever you’re doing.
•Vivid is great for working with pictures or when you want the colours on your E402 to be
brighter and more saturated. Vivid Mode instead of simply boosting overall saturation,
checks the screen pixel by pixel and converts the colour with an advanced colour table.
While other manufacturers will simply increase the saturation, ASUS technology creates a
richer and more natural image.

•Manual lets you adjust the colour temperature to your preferences, so that you’re always
in control
•EyeCare mode looks after your eyes: instead of just adding a layer of yellow to warm up the
colour temperature, EyeCare checks each pixel on the screen and only reduces blue light
where it actually appears, providing a much more accurate way of reducing the glare. As
with the other modes, it’s just a simple click away.
How does EyeCare work?
Now that we’ve explained how that works, it’s time to show you. The picture below shows a
photograph both with and without EyeCare switched on.

The image on the left shows the photograph without EyeCare, while the right-hand side of the
photograph shows what it’s like with EyeCare enabled. You can immediately see that with EyeCare,
the blue light is greatly reduced while the image itself remains as vivid as possible. That’s because
EyeCare works at the pixel level, reducing the blue light only where necessary.
Music to your ears
A great experience isn’t just about how your notebooks looks: it’s got to sound great, too. ASUS
engineers have installed a thoughtful combination of hardware and software to make your sound
come to life whether you’re watching a movie, Skyping the family or listening to music.
The hardware and software have been carefully optimised by the ASUS Golden Ear team, a group of
professional sound experts who are responsible for the entire audio system of your device. The
Golden Ear team works with world-renowned audio technology companies such as ICEPower to
customise and fine-tune the audio hardware and software on every device to ensure that your
sound experience is not only thrilling and immersive but also unforgettable.
ASUS has included high-quality dual speakers with bigger 9cc speaker chambers, which are situated
under the palm rest so that the sound is front and centre. The sound is directed towards you so that
it’s truly immersive.
To complement the great hardware, ASUS has added its intuitive AudioWizard app, which lets you
choose just the right sound for what you’re doing. There are five presets;
•Music Mode balances the treble and bass to provide the best experience for listening to
your favourite tunes. This mode brings you a true-to-life sound experience with minimal
enhancements, so that what you hear is exactly what the original producer intended you to
hear.

•Movie Mode delivers an immersive experience, enhancing the bass and high frequencies to
give you the full benefit of all the sound effects – just as if you were in the cinema.
•Gaming Mode is just what you need to be able to hear the sound effects, music and voices in
your favourite games. It enhances every sound detail in the game, whether it’s the sound of
the engine in a racing game or the realistic explosions in a battle zone. The added spatial
detail available in Gaming Mode means that you’ll be able to enjoy worlds beyond your
imagination.

•Speech Mode optimises the settings so that if you’re speaking to loved ones online their
voices come through loud and clear. This mode compensates for the poor speech quality
that often accompanies the highly compressed videos streamed online to give a better
listening experience.
•Record Mode turns on the microphone so that you can record what’s being said around you
for later reference. This mode ensures that all your recordings are clear and well-balanced,

avoiding the problems of poor bass and distorted high frequencies that are often a
characteristic of badly compressed recordings.
•Off returns the settings to their default for when you’re doing everyday computing tasks
Each mode has been fine-tuned by ASUS’s Golden Ear team to provide the best option for whatever
you’re doing.
It’s good to talk
Microsoft’s Windows 10 is great if you use speech recognition, which many applications deploy. And
one of the coolest things about Windows 10 is Cortana*, your personal assistant. Once you’ve set it
up, say “Hey, Cortana!” and she will spring into action. You can ask her questions that range from
the quotidian – such as “which stores near me are open now?” – asking her to tell you a joke.
To make using speech recognition a great experience on your E402, ASUS engineers have made it
easy to get started using the built-in microphone. Setting it up is a breeze, so you’ll be ready to make
the most of voice recognition right away.
That’s great for older members of the family who might have trouble with their hands, and it’s also
great for everyone else, too: Cortana can also launch programs simply from the sound of your voice.
Why type when you can speak?
*Cortana is not yet available in all territories
Face to face
We all love video-chatting: even if friends and family are far away, being able to chat face to face
with loved ones brings us closer together. ASUS Tru2Life technology will help here, too, as it boosts
the sharpness and contrast of playback, meaning that the E402 is particularly great for students or
young professionals away from home. All you need to do is fire up the new Messaging app that
comes as standard with Windows 10 and you’ll be sharing your news with your far-flung family
within moments.
Your E402 comes with a 0.3MP VGA front camera, offering a resolution of 640 x 840 with a focal
length equivalent of 50cm, which gives you a great balance between video quality and connectivity
over VOIP connections.
Great software
Great hardware is one thing, but it needs great software, too.
To make sure that your computing experience is the best it can be, ASUS ships several programs to
help you get the best out of your E402.
You’ll see this from the moment you boot the notebook: the ASUS Install utility will help you make
sure you’ve got the most up-to-date versions of drivers, multimedia software and all the network,
system, backup and business tools that are already installed.

Next, ASUS Live Update will check to make sure that your E402 is running the most up-to-date
versions of Windows 10.
Then you’re all set to explore the software that ASUS includes with your E402. As well as the ASUS
Splendid Utility and AudioWizard, ASUS includes its WebStorage app, offering you 16GB of free
space for one year. That also links up any other ASUS devices you have, and provides a central,
online space where you can store your pictures, music and other files.
You’ll also find the ASUS GiftBox app on your notebook. This is a marketplace of apps curated by
ASUS to help you get the most out of your laptop, and includes such great apps as TripAdvisor, to
help you plan the travels you’ll want to take your E402 on, and Flipboard, which collates stories from
topics that matter to you.

Your E402 ships with Windows 10 Pro, which is the most up to date version of Microsoft’s operating
system. Windows 10 includes new, elegant and highly intuitive versions of productivity apps
including Mail, Calendar and People, plus Xbox, so that you can share your gaming content with your
Microsoft console; Groove Music for both managing and playing your online and offline music, and
Health, News, Money and Sport, allowing you to keep tabs on your own health while keeping up to
date with everything that matters in your world.
Microsoft’s Cortana is there to help you with searching, and can also help you manage your life.
Cortana can set alarms and reminders for you as well as keep an eye on your email and remind you
of details about your upcoming flights.

Using the keyboard and touchpad
Your E402 might be a budget notebook, but there’s nothing cheap about two key components: the
keyboard and the touchpad.
The E402 sports a full-sized chiclet keyboard that is a pleasure to type on and will make those work
documents or university essays a breeze to get through.
The keys have a satisfying 1.6mm travel, and in a thoughtful design touch, the keyboard is slightly
recessed into the chassis of the notebook. That means they won’t suffer from additional wear and
tear when you open and close the notebook from the lid pressing on the keys.
The ASUS Smart Gesture app lets you configure the touchpad to suit your way of working. It guides
you through setting your preferences for tapping, scrolling and using gestures such as pinch-to-zoom.
The touchpad itself is a good size and silky-smooth to the touch, while clicking is a satisfyingly
definite movement that means you won’t accidentally click on something you didn’t want to.
Use ASUS Smart Gesture to activate tap-to-click, so that you don’t have to stop to click manually
when you’re selecting a file or folder. A simple tap on the keyboard does the job instead, meaning
you can get on with what you’re doing that much faster.

You can also choose which direction you prefer to scroll in: set it either to follow the direction of the
screen, or to scroll in the opposite direction.
Two-fingered gestures give you even more control over the touchpad. Set it to show pop-up menus
when you tap with two fingers, saving the need to stop and right-click, and activate pinch-to-zoom
and rotate, which is much faster than pausing to use the keyboard or mouse.
With three and four-finger gestures, you can activate Cortana, launch Windows 10’s Notifications
Center and browse smoothly through websites and documents.
The Mouse Detection option allows you to choose to disable the touchpad if you plug in an external
mouse, which means that if you rest your palm on the touchpad you won’t accidentally trigger a
gesture.
Using the ASUS Smart Gesture utility, you can even set up your E402 to be controlled by your
smartphone.
ASUS Smart Gesture means that all your computing tasks are at your fingertips, and are fingertip-
natural.

ASUS IceCool Technology
One of the thoughtful touches to the E402 is that it will never get too hot under your hand. That’s
thanks to ASUS IceCool Technology, which reshapes the internal design of notebook to keep the
warmer components away from the palm rest. This means that the internal temperature of the E402
is always between 28C and 35C – that’s lower than your body temperature, so that the laptop
always feels cool to the touch, keeping you comfortable for hours on end.

Get connected
Some budget notebooks make compromises on the connectivity options, as do some lightweight
devices. That’s not the case with the E402, which offers plenty of ports to help you make the most of
it.
Despite its slim profile and light weight, the E402 has two USB ports, one of which is the new, faster
USB 3.0 standard, which is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0, offering data transfer rates of up to
5Gbps when connected to another USB 3.0 device such as an external hard drive.
This is great if you want to load up your E402 with movies before you go away: you’ll be able to
transfer a film (typically around 2GB) in under a second. Or if you’re backing up a large number of
files such as photographs, copying them across to a USB 3.0 back-up drive will be a breeze. There’s
no need to use clumsy workarounds such as emailing documents back and forth to yourself, or
transferring a bigger file such as a movie via cloud storage between devices.
The USB 2.0 port is just the ticket if you want to plug in external peripherals such as a mouse or
keyboard rather than rely on a battery-powered Bluetooth connection.
However, if you do prefer to use Bluetooth, the short-range ad-hoc networking protocol that creates
peer-to-peer connections between devices such as speakers, cellphones, keyboards and mice, that’s
a breeze, too, as the E402 ships with Bluetooth 4.0. This is the most power-efficient version of
Bluetooth, so using that won’t drain your battery.
Wi-Fi comes as standard, of course: the E402 ships with support for 802.11b/g/n wireless networks.
That connects to all routers, using the 2.4Ghz band, which offers the greatest range and fast transfer
speeds of up to 300Mbps. That means you’ll be able to connect not only to hotspots when you’re
