Chapter 1: Product introduction
1.3 Special features
1.3.1 Product highlights
Latest processor technology
The P4B533-E motherboard supports the latest Intel
®
Pentium
®
4 Processor
via a 478-pin surface mount ZIF socket. The Pentium 4 processor with 512KB
L2 cache on 0.13 micron process features the Intel
®
NetBurst™micro-
architecture that includes hyper-pipelined technology, a rapid execution
engine, a 533MHz system bus, and an execution trace cache to offer a
significant increase in performance. See page 2-4 for more information.
DDR memory support
Employing the Double Data Rate (DDR) memory technology, the
P4B533-E motherboard supports up to 2GB of system memory using
PC2100/1600 DDR DIMMs. The ultra-fast 266MHz memory bus doubles
the speed of the PC133 SDRAM to deliver the required bandwidth for the
latest 3D graphics, multimedia, and Internet applications. See page 2-10.
USB 2.0 technology
The motherboard implements the new Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0
specification, extending the connection speed from 12 Mbps on USB 1.1
to a fast 480 Mbps on USB 2.0. The higher bandwidth of USB 2.0 allows
connection of devices such as high resolution video conferencing
cameras, next generation scanners and printers, and fast storage units.
USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.1. See page 2-31.
Digital audio interface
(on audio models only)
A digital audio connector is onboard to accommodate the bundled Sony/
Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) In/Out module, which supports coaxial
interfaces. Experience 5.1-channel surround sound and enhanced 3D
audio while playing DVDs and computer games. See page 2-34.
RAID 0/RAID 1 support
(on RAID models only)
The motherboard includes the Promise
®
chip PDC20276 and two ATA133
interfaces to support Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)
configuration. This feature supports UltraATA/133 drives, and is backward
compatible with Ultra ATA/100/66/33 drives. The RAID controller onboard
supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 configurations. See pages 2-27 and 5-26.

ASUS P4B533-E motherboard user guide
1-3
RAID 0 (called
data striping
) optimizes two identical hard disk drives to
read and write data in parallel, interleaved stacks. Two hard disks perform
the same work as a single drive but at a sustained data transfer rate,
double that of a single disk alone, thus improving data access and
storage. RAID 1 (called
data mirroring
) copies and maintains an identical
image of data from one drive to a second drive. If one drive fails, the disk
array management software directs all applications to the surviving drive
as it contains a complete copy of the data in the other drive. This RAID
configuration provides data protection and increases fault tolerance to the
entire system.
Onboard IEEE-1394
(on 1394 models only)
The NEC 1394 controller PD72874GC and two IEEE 1394 interfaces are
onboard to support 400Mbps data transfers through the bundled 1394
module. See page 2-35.
Onboard LAN
(on LAN models only)
The Intel 82562ET LAN PHY onboard works with the integrated MAC in
the South Bridge (ICH4) to fully support 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet
networking.
ASUS EZ Plug™
This patented ASUS technology lets you use your existing power supply
rather than buying a new ATX 12V power supply. The ASUS EZ Plug™is
a 4-pin auxiliary +12V connector mounted on the motherboard that
connects a regular 4-pin device power connector from the power supply.
This connector is necessary to provide the additional power required by
the P4 CPU. See page 2-29.

1-4
Chapter 1: Product introduction
ASUS POST Reporter™
P4B533-E offers a new exciting feature called the ASUS POST Reporter™
to provide friendly voice messages and alerts during the Power-On Self-
Tests (POST). Through the system’s internal speaker, or an added
external speaker, you will hear the messages informing you of the system
boot status and causes of boot errors, if any. The bundled Winbond Voice
Editor software allows you to customize the voice messages, and provides
multi-language support. See details on pages 3-2 and 5-20.
ASUS MyLogo2™
This new feature present in the P4B533-E motherboard allows you to
personalize and add style to your system with customizable boot logos.
See details on page 5-10.
ASUS Multi-language BIOS
The multi-language BIOS allows you to select the language of your choice
from the available options. The localized BIOS menus allow you to
configure easier and faster. Visit the ASUS website for the supported
languages. See page 4-11 on how to select a language.
ASUS EZ Flash BIOS
With the ASUS EZ Flash, you can easily update the system BIOS even
before loading the operating system. No need to use a DOS-based utility
or boot from a floppy disk. See details on page 4-1.
ASUS Q-Fan feature
The ASUS Q-Fan technology smartly adjusts the fan speeds according to
the system loading to ensure quiet, cool, and efficient operation. See
details on page 4-32.

1.3.2 Value-added solutions
Overclocking
•adjustable CPU frequency multiple in BIOS using the ASUS
JumperFree™solution
•adjustable FSB/DDR ratio
•fixed AGP/PCI frequencies
•adjustable CPU, DDR, and AGP voltages
•Stepless Frequency Selection (SFS) for fine-tuning system bus
frequency from 100MHz up to 200MHz at 1MHz increments
•optimized system performance through BIOS built-in Turbo mode
Concurrent PCI
This feature allows multiple PCI transfers from PCI master buses to the
memory and processor.
Temperature, fan, and voltage monitoring
The CPU temperature is monitored by the ASUS ASIC through the CPU’s
internal diode to prevent overheating and damage. The system fan
rotations per minute (RPM) is monitored for timely failure detection. The
system voltage levels are monitored to ensure stable supply of current for
critical components.
Dual function power switch
While the system is ON, pressing the power switch for less than 4 seconds
puts the system to sleep mode or to soft-off mode, depending on the BIOS
setting. Pressing the power switch for more than 4 seconds lets the
system enter the soft-off mode regardless of the BIOS setting.
ACPI ready
The Advanced Configuration power Interface (ACPI) provides more energy
saving features for operating systems that support OS Direct Power
Management (OSPM).
Auto fan off
The system fans power off automatically when the system is in sleep
mode. This feature reduces both power consumption and system noise.
Chassis intrusion detection
The motherboard supports chassis intrusion monitoring through the ASUS
ASIC. A chassis intrusion event is retained in the system memory for more
protection.
