triumphant reign of the ARTG2.
Curtain callfor the third generation of CDplayer: the new ARTG3
(Generation 3)isnothing less than Audionet’sfinal statement for repro-
ducing the classical compact disc. At the same time, italsorepresentsa
thoroughbred high-endD/A converter. Itssound quality canbe used via
further digital systems,especiallycomputers.Thisispossible via optical
and electrical digital inputs.

1.1 Included

1.2 Transport
Important
·Please transport the ARTG3 only in the included package.
·Never leaveCD or the stabilizerinside the ARTG3 during transport.
The sensitive mechanicsof the drive could suffer damage.
·Alwaysuse the plastic bag to prevent scratcheson the housing.
·Pleaseallow the ARTG3 to adapt to the climatic conditionsin your
listening room after transport. Asknown for every optical device, low
temperaturesand humidity may causethelaser unitto becovered
with condensation. Leave thedrawer of theARTG3 open for several
hoursbefore switchingon the first time after transport.

4 Installation and powersupply
Important
·During connecting orremoving the ART G3 to/from apre ampli-
fier both unitsand the corresponding power amplifiershave to be
switched off to prevent damage of the ART G3 or any ofthe
other connected units.
·Pleasemakesure that all cablesare in absolute bestconditions!
Broken shieldsor short-cut cablescould damagethe ARTG3
and/or anyother connected unit.
4.1Placement
Important
·It isrecommended to place the ARTG3 into ahigh quality rack or
onto a stable table.
·Do not expose the unitto direct sunlight.
·Do not place the ART G3 in closerange toheat sourceslike radia-
tors.
·Do not place the ART G3 on top of other units,especially not on top
of power amplifiers,pre amplifiersor similarthat produce heat. Both
unitscould suffer damage from thermal overload.
·Do not usethe unit in a place where it isexposed to vibrations.
·Do not place theunitcloseto loudspeakersor into the corner of a
room where it isexposed to highlevelsof sonic energy, which might
reduce the sound quality of the unit.
4.2Mains connection
The mainsinput 12 *ison the back panel ofthe ARTG3. Toconnect the
unit to mainsusethe included mainscord. If you prefer to useadifferent
power cord make sure that it meetsthe specificationsfor your home
country.

Important
·The electrical specificationsof your home country mustmeet the
electrical specificationsprinted onto the backpanel.
·The ARTG3 isaClass I unit and mustbe earthed. Pleaseensurea
stable earthconnection. 'Phase'('hot'pin)ismarked on the back panel
('PHASE')13 .
·Never pull the mainsplug while the ARTG3isswitched on! Always
power down the unit to stand-by mode first, before you pullthe
mainscord from the mainsinput 12 on theback panel of the unit.
Wait at least 3 minutesbefore you re-plug the unit to mains.
Only in caseof extended absence(like vacations)or if massivetrouble on
the mainspower isto be expected you should disconnect the unit from
mains.Todisconnect the ARTG3 completely frommainspull themains
plug.
4.3Orientation of mains plug
The correctpolarizationof mainsisimportant for reasonsof audioclarity
and stability. Pleaseconnect the mainscord that the hot pin of the wall
outlet isconnected to the pin of mainsinput 12 marked 'PHASE'13 on
the back panel of theunit. Your Audionet ARTG3 isable to detect a
wrong polarization of the mainsplug during start-up. If the message

appearsin the display, switch off the unit and flip the mainsplug in the
wall outlet (refer to section 'Mainsphase detection'on page 24).
4.4Connecting the external power supply EPS
Tousethe optional external power supply EPS (External Power Supply)
with your ARTG3 follow thesesteps:
1. Makesure both ART G3 and EPSare switched off and discon-
nected from the mains.
2. Connect the EPSwith the included cableto input jack8 onthe
backpanelof the ART G3. The shape ofthe plug preventsany
wrong polarity. Thesmall 'nose' inside the plug hasto faceup-
wards. Now screw the ring of the plug onto the input jack8 .

3. Connect both (!!) units(ART G3 and EPS) to mains.
4. Switch on the EPS atthe backpanel first.
5. Usekey power at the front panel or thekeys PowerOn or
PowerToggle *) of the Audionet System Remote Control
Harmony One to switch on theART G3.The ART G3 isnow
ready to useand getsitspowerfrom the external power supply
EPS.
6. To switch off the ART G3 into stand-by mode, usethe key power
on the front panel orkeys PowerOff or PowerToggle *) of
the Audionet System Remote Control Harmony One.
Important
·Never switch on or offthe EPS on itsbackpanel while the ARTG3
isswitchedon or during playback.
·For furtherinformationreferring to the external powersupply EPS
pleaseconsult itsuser'smanual.
Tip
·Useahighquality cable (for example theAudionet P10) to connect
the EPS to mains. The sound will improve.

5 Outputs and inputs
Important

The digitalaudio signal isavailable at the output OUT 1 in the
SPDIFformat depending on thesetting of option Set Digital
Output Mode (refer to sections'Digital output format'on page 14
and 'Set Digital Output Mode'on page 52).
10 Digital output OUT 2 (SPDIF)
The digitalaudio signal isavailable at the output OUT 2 in the
SPDIFformat depending on thesetting of option Set Digital
Output Mode (refer to sections'Digital output format'on page 14
and 'Set Digital Output Mode'on page 52).
11 Digital output OUT 3 (AES/EBU)
The digitalaudio signal isavailable at the output OUT 3 in the
AES/EBU format depending on the setting of option Set Digital
Output Mode (refer to sections'Digital output format'on page 14
and 'Set Digital Output Mode'on page 52).
14 Digital output OUT 4 (optical/TOSLink)
Usean optical (TOSLink) cable toconnect the optical digital output
OUT4 of the ARTG3to any unit with an optical digital input. The
output signal dependson the setting of option Set Digital Out-
put Mode (refer tosections'Digital outputformat'onpage 14 and
'Set DigitalOutput Mode'on page52).
15 Digital input IN 1(USB/SPDIF)
Digital audio input to connect acomputer tothe ARTG3 for play-
back of music andsound filesusing the sophisticated D/A-converter
of the ARTG3. The ARTG3 isrecognizedas'USB Audio Device'
by the operating system of your computer, e.g. Windows7*1.Usea
standard audio player (e.g. WindowsMedia Player*1)to playback
your music through the ARTG3.
Via an optional adapter cable the USB input can be used asSPDIF
*1 'MicrosoftWindows'and 'Windows MediaPlayer'are registered trademarksofMicrosoftCor-
poration and were only used for information purposes.

16 Digital input IN 2 (optical/TOSLink)
Audio input to connect digital devices(CD-Players, DATrecorders
etc) via optical fibre cable. Thisinput isalsoavailable for the usage
of the D/A-converter.
5.3Digital output formats
Important
·In order to usedigitaloutputs OUT 1 to 4of your ARTG3, the op-
tion Set Digital Output Mode hastobe set to either LowBit
Mode or HighBit Mode.If youselected setting disabled all digi-
tal outputsof the ARTG3 are switched off (refer to section 'Set Digi-
tal Output Mode'on page 52).
Pleasereferto the following table to determine whichdigital format at
which sample rate and resolution isavailable at the digital audio outputs.
The decision whetherto usethe HighBit or the LowBit mode dependson
the kind of digital receiver unit your ARTG3 isconnected to.

5.3.1LowBit mode
Usethe LowBit mode to connectthe ARTG3 with acomponent (digital
receiver) that has no Audionet HighBit-Interface. Referring to the table
below all digital outputs OUT 1 9 to OUT 4 14 transmit astereo PCM
signal at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and with a resolution of 16 bit.

5.3.2HighBit mode
Usethe HighBit mode only if you want to transmit digital audio data
from the ARTG3 to anAudionet pre amplifier compatible to the Audio-
net HighBit-Interface, e.g. the Audionet MAP V2 or Audionet MAP 1.
Additionally, in theHighBit mode digital output OUT 3 11 transmitsa
stereo PCMsignal atasampling rate of 96 kHz (downsampledfrom the
Audionet HighBit 192 kHz signal) with aresolution of 24 bitin the
AES/EBUformat. Digital output OUT4 14 transmitsevenin the
HighBit mode astereoPCMsignal at asampling rate of 44.1 kHz and a
resolution of 16 bit.
Important
·With other devicesbutHighBit-compatible Audionet pre amplifiersa
correct decoding of digital audio data is not possible andcanleadto
high-level noisefrom the speakers,whichmight damage your ear
and/or equipment.
In order to transmit digital audio data from your ARTG3 to an Audionet
pre amplifier, you have toconnect digitaloutput OUT1 9of the
ARTG3 to the digital audio input 'Digital In 2'of the MAP V2 or 'Digital
Audio IN 1'of the MAP 1.
Additionally, connect digital output OUT2 10 of the ARTG3 to digital
audio input 'DigitalIn3'ofthe MAP V2 or 'DigitalAudioIN 2'ofthe
MAP 1.
Important
·Only if both connectionsarein place and the option Set Digital
Output Mode isset to HighBit Mode,you cantransmit and re-
ceive digital audio data in HighBit mode (refer to section 'Set Digital
Output Mode'on page52)!
Important
·If you do not need anyof the digital outputsdo not useany jumpers
to short-circuit the digital outputs.Instead,select disabled for op-
tion Set Digital Output Mode to switch off all digital outputs.
(refer to section 'Set Digital Output Mode'on page 52).

5.4USB/SPDIF digital audio input
5.4.1 Connecting thecomputer to theUSB audio input
With the USB Audio interfaceyou canplayback music andsound files
from yourcomputer (PC) using the sophisticated digital-to-analog con-
vertersof the ARTG3 instead of the soundcard of the PC. The ARTG3
isintegratedinto your computer system asUSB Audio device. The instal-
lation isdone (mostly) automatically via Plug'n'Play, provided acorrectly
installed operating system.
Note
·Tousethe USB Audio function of the ARTG3, yourcomputer re-
quireshaving Microsoft™Windows™ XP™or newer, Apple OS X
10.1 or higher or an current Linuxversion asoperating system, with
the latestUSB Audio driversinstalled. For further informationabout
the minimum systemrequirementspleaserefer to the documentation
of your installed operating system.
1. Connect digital inputIN 1 15 with asuitable USB cable (plug
type Ato plug type B) to afree USB port at your computer that
iscompatible with USB 1.1 or above and supportsthe Full Speed
USB protocol.
2. Start yourcomputer, then switch on the ART G3.
The ARTG3 isrecognized asnewly added hardwareby your computer.
Dependingon the operating system installed on yourcomputer, it might
occur that at the firstconnection of the ARTG3, the operating system
promptsyou to install a driver for the new hardware.
·If necessary, Windowsmay prompt you to insert itsinstallation
CD/DVD. Pease have the disc ready.
·For furtherinformation about automatic hardwarerecognition,
searching for and installing hardware drivers,pleaserefer to the
documentation of your operating system.
·USB Audio isan integral part ofup to date operating systems,sono
further software installation isnecessary. After installing the neces-
sary hardware driversthe ARTG3 will be automatically integrated
into your computer system from now on and isready to useafter
plugging in the USB cable.
Dependingon the installed operating systemthe ARTG3 will be auto-
matically setup up asstandard device for sound playback. In casethisis
not done automatically due toyour current systemconfiguration,please
set the corresponding option manually:

a) Microsoft™ Windows™
Open up the 'Soundsand Audio Devices'dialog of your WindowsSet-
tingsmenu.Click on the tab 'Audio'and select 'Audionet ARTG3'from
the list of standard devices(see the following example):
b) Mac OS X
Open the 'System Preferences'and select the preference pane 'Sound'.
Click on the tab 'Output', and select 'Audionet ARTG3'asoutput device.

c) Linux
Open the 'System Settings'and select 'Sound &Multimedia'.Now open
the item 'Music'in the 'Audio Output'dialog, and select 'IDEKTRON
GmbH &Co. KG. Germany Audionet ART G3 (USB Audio)'as'Output
Device Preference for the Music Category'.
Now all music and sound files,that you playback on your computer are
played backusing thesophisticated analog-to-digital convertersofyour
ARTG3.
Note
·All volumeand balance settingsof your operating system or your
sound application will be still active. In case you hear nosound at all
or the sound haslowvolume while playing back sound and music
fileswith your ARTG3, pleasemake sure that your volume settings
of your operating system or sound application are not muted or set to
a low level.
Important
·The USB Audio function of theARTG3 can only be used if the
loaded discisstopped,or no disc isloaded atall.
·During playback of any discwiththe ARTG3 you willhear only the
audio from the disc.There will be no signalfrom the USB Audio in-
terface.
·Option Set Auto Off in the Global Setup menu hasto be setto
never off,if you would like tousethe USB Audio function of the
ARTG3, otherwisethe unit willshut downautomatically after 30
minutes(refer to section 'Set AutoOff'on page 54).

Noteson Microsoft™ Windows™
·Microsoft Windowswill setup the ARTG3automatically asstandard
device for sound playback. In casethisisnot done automatically due
to your current system configuration, please set the corresponding op-
tion manual.
·Microsoft Windowsconvertsevery input format automatically into a
stereo PCMsignal with 44.1 or 48 kHz samplingfrequencyand
16 bitsresolution. Which audio formatsare played back dependson
the capabilitiesof your Microsoft Windowssystemand/or your
sound application only!
In caseyou like tocheck,ifMicrosoftWindowsrecognizedyour
ARTG3 correctly, pleaseopen up the Device Manager of your Windows
system. Youwill find the ARTG3 in the following 3placesin the listof
devices:
1. Sound, video and game controller USB Audio Device
2. Human Interface Devices USB Human Interface Device
3. UniversalSerialBus controllers USB Composite Device

5.4.2Using the SPDIF inputs
You can use Digital Audio IN 2 16 or the USB/SPDIFDigital Audio
Input IN 1 15 (with aspecial adaptor cable, availablefrom Audionet)
asSPDIF digital audio input. Therefore, you can usethe sophisticated
digital-to-analog converter of the ARTG3 for other digital sourceslike
CD transports, DATrecorder, too.
1. Connect the USB/SPDIFAudio input 15 to the SPDIF output of
the sourcedevice using an adapter cable.Alternatively you canuse
an opticalfiber cable to connect the source deviceto the Digi-
tal Input IN 2 16 .
2. Switch on the ARTG3, and select in the main menu the digital input
of you choice (refer to section 'SetSPDIFDigital Input'on page 52).
3. Switch on the source device, andstart the playback onthe source
device.
The music of the source device isnow played back using the sophisti-
cated digital-to-analog convertersof the ARTG3.
Note
·The ARTG3 supportsthe following formats:PCMStereo, sample
rate 32 kHz up to 96kHz, 16 bit and 24 bit resolution.
Important
·The SPDIFAudio function of the ARTG3 can only be used ifthe
loaded discisstopped,or no disc isloaded atall.
·During playback of any discwiththe ARTG3 you willhear only the
audio fromthe disc. There will be no signal from the SPDIF Audio
interface.
·Option Set Auto Off in the Global Setup menu hasto be setto
never off,if you would like to usethe SPDIF Audio function of
the ARTG3, otherwisethe unit will shut down automatically after 30
minutes(refer to section 'Set AutoOff'on page 54).
