1 General
1.1 Information about these operating instructions
These operating instructions allow safe and efficient handling of the instrument.
These operating instructions form part of the instrument and must be kept near
the instrument and accessible to personnel at all times.
The local occupational health and safety and general safety regulations are also
valid for the workplace where the instrument is to be used.
Illustrations in these operating instructions are intended for basic understanding
and may deviate from the actual version.
1.2 Explanation of symbols
The safety instructions provided in this manual are marked by symbols. The
safety instructions are introduced by keywords used to express the extent of the
danger.
Strictly adhere to all safety instructions and use caution to prevent accidents,
personal injury and material damage.

This combination of symbol and signal word indicates dan-
gers posed by electric power. If the safety instructions are
not observed, there is a danger of serious or fatal injuries.

1.3 Limitation of liability
All specifications and instructions in this manual have been compiled taking
account of applicable standards and regulations, the current state of technology
and the experience and insights we have gained over the years.

Safety
2 Safety
This section provides an overview of all the main safety aspects involved in
ensuring optimal personnel protection and safe and smooth operation.
Non-compliance with the action guidelines and safety instructions contained
in this manual may result in serious hazards.
2.1 Intended use
The instrument is designed and constructed exclusively for the intended use as
described here.
NOTICE! NOTICE!
The manual grinding wheel is only intended to be used for
grinding ophthalmic lenses (silicate lenses, CR39, poly-
carbonate and Trivex).
Compliance with all instructions given in these operating instructions forms part
of the intended use.
Any use deviating or varying from the intended use is considered incorrect use.
WARNNG WARNING!
Danger resulting from incorrect use!
Incorrect use of the manual grinding wheel may result in
hazardous situations.
• The instrument must not be used for materials other
than the ophthalmic lenses listed above.
• The instrument must only be used under constant
supervision.
• Keep untrained persons away from the instrument.
• Do not set up the instrument near optical measuring
instruments.
Any claims due to damage arising from incorrect use are excluded.
2.2 Responsibility of the healthcare establishment
The instrument is used in the commercial sector. The healthcare establishment
where the device is to be used is therefore subject to any legal obligations
including occupational health and safety (e.g., the regulations for accident pre-
vention valid in Germany).
The healthcare establishment is also obliged remain infor-
med of all relevant, local laws valid at the time the device is
being used and any standards and guidelines associated
with these laws and to adhere to these.
• The healthcare establishment must ensure that a damaged or non-functional
is never used.
• The healthcare establishment must be informed of all valid occupational
health and safety regulations and implement these in the form of an instruc-
tion manual for the operation of the instrument.
• The healthcare establishment must verify that this instruction manual
conforms to the current regulations for the entire time the instrument is in use
and must update the manual if necessary.

• The healthcare establishment must clearly regulate and specify the
responsibilities for setup, operation, resolution of faults and cleaning.
• The healthcare establishment must ensure that all employees who
use the device have read and understood these operating instructions. All
personnel must also be trained and informed of any hazards by the healthcare
establishment at regular intervals.
• The healthcare establishment must ensure that only approved accessories
are used together with the instrument.
2.3 Personnel requirements
WARNING WARNING!
Risk of injury if personnel are not adequately qualified!
If unqualified personnel use the instrument, there is the risk
of injury and damage to property.
• Only allow tasks to be carried out by appropriately
qualified personnel.
• Keep unqualified personnel away from the instrument.
In these operating instructions qualifications of personnel for the various
areas of responsibility are described as follows:
Specialized personnel
Specialised personnel are personnel, who due to their specialized training, skills,
and experience, as well as knowledge of the applicable standards and regula-
tions, are capable of executing the tasks assigned to them, and of recognizing
possible hazards and avoiding them on their own.
Only skilled personnel are approved as personnel who can be expected to carry
out their work reliably. Persons whose ability to react is impaired by drugs, alco-
hol or medication, for example, are not approved.
When selecting personnel any valid regulations regarding age and occupation
must be adhered to.
2.4 Fundamental hazards
In the following section residual risks are listed that may originate from
the instrument.
To reduce health risks and to avoid dangerous situations, the safety information
presented here and the safety information in subsequent chapters of these ope-
rating instructions must be complied with.
DANGER DANGER!
Life-threatening hazard due to electrical current!
There is an imminent threat to life due to electric shock if
contact is made with live parts. Damage to insulation or to
individual components can be life threatening.
• Only allow qualified electricians to work on electrical
systems.
• The instrument must only be connected to an earthed
wall socket.
• If the power supply cord is damaged, immediately
disconnect the power supply by removing the power
plug from the wall socket and initiate repairs.

• Protect the instrument from heat.
• Never pull on or clamp the power supply cord and
never keep it under permanent tension.
• The power supply cord must always be laid out with no
tension or kinks and must not be driven over.
• For all maintenance, cleaning and fault resolution work,
disconnect the instrument from the power plug.

Trapping hazard due to rotating grinding wheel!
Long hair, loose clothing or jewellery may be trapped in
the rotating grinding wheel thus causing serious injuries.
• When working with the instrument always wear
clothing that tears easily and never wear ties, bandan-
nas or scarves.
• Always remove jewellery when working with the
instrument and tie long hair back.

Risk of injury due to rotating grinding wheel!!
The rotating grinding wheel may cause grazes on the skin
and the lens may cause cuts and burns.
• All work must be done with extreme caution.
• All work must only be done by skilled personnel.

The instrument may be damaged by incorrect use!
Improper use may damage the instrument.
• Do not drop the instrument.
• Do not subject the instrument to strong vibrations.
• Always protect the instrument from sunlight.
• Always protect the instrument from heat.
2.5 Personal protective equipment
Personal protective equipment serves to protect people against hazards to their
safety and health while working.
The personnel must wear the personal protective equipment while working on
and with the device which is referred specially to in the individual sections of
these instructions.
The personal protective equipment is explained below:
Safety goggles
The protective goggles protect the eyes from flying parts
and liquid splashes.
Safety cap
The safety cap prevents hair being drawn into the
instrument due to rotating and moving parts during grin-
ding, for example.
It is obligatory to wear the safety cap with hair longer than
10 cm.

2.6 Labelling
Warning symbol for injury on the grinding
wheel and the display of direction of rotati-
on form a unit.
Indicates that the instrument must not be
disposed of in household rubbish. The
obsolete instrument can be sent to waste
management for electronics and metal
recycling. The manufacturer also accepts
old instruments for disposal.

4.2 Power switch
The [power switch] is used to switch the
power supply of the manual
grinding wheel. The following switch posi-
tions are possible:
• Switch position on - 0 - means the
power supply is switched off.
• Switch position on - I - means the
power supply is switched on (Fig. 3).

grinding wheel turns upwards.
• Switch position on - REV - means the
grinding wheel turns downwards (Fig.

The power supply cord is used to connect
the manual grinding wheel to the power
supply of the healthcare establishment.
4.6 Water collection container

The water tank (Fig. 8/1) is used to
cool during grinding and is operated
using the water valve (Fig. 8/2).

Transporting, packaging and storage
5 Transporting, packaging and storage
5.1 Transport inspection
On receipt, immediately inspect the delivery for completeness and transport
damage.
Proceed as follows in the event of externally apparent transport damage:
• Do not accept the delivery, or only accept it subject to reservation.
• Note the extent of the damage on the transport documentation or the
shipper‘s delivery note.
• Initiate complaint procedures.
Issue a complaint in respect of each defect immediately
following detection. Damage compensation claims can
only be asserted within the applicable complaint dead-
lines.
5.2 Packaging
The individual packages have been packed in a carton in accordance with the
expected transport conditions. Environmentally friendly materials are used as
much as possible for the packaging.
The carton should protect the individual components from transport damage,
corrosion and other damage prior to assembly. Therefore, do not destroy the
carton and unpack the items shortly before assembly.
Dispose of packaging material in accordance with the relevant applicable legal
requirements and local regulations.

Danger to the environment due to incorrect disposal
Packaging materials are valuable raw materials and in
many cases can continue to be used or can be properly
processed and recycled. Incorrect disposal of packaging
materials may pose risks to the environment.
• Dispose of packaging materials in accordance with
the environmental regulations.
• Observe locally applicable waste disposal regulations.
If necessary, outsource the disposal to a specialist
company.
5.3 Symbols on the packaging
The following symbols are printed on the packaging. The symbols must always
be heeded during transport.
The arrow tips on the sign mark the top of the package.
They must always point upwards; otherwise the content
could be damaged.

Marks packages with fragile or sensitive contents.
Handle the package with care; do not allow to fall and do
not expose to impacts.
Protect packages against moisture and keep dry.
5.4 Storage
Store the packages under the following conditions:
• Do not store outside.
• Store in a dry and dust-free place.
• Do not expose to aggressive media.
• Protect from sunlight.
• Avoid mechanical shocks.
• Storage temperature: 15 to 35°C.
• Relative air humidity: max. 60%
• If storing for longer than 3 months, regularly check the general condition of
all parts and the packaging. If necessary, replenish or replace the protective
material.
In some circumstances there may be storage instructions
on the packages that exceed the requirements listed
here. Adhere to these instructions.

6 Assembly and setting up
6.1 Requirements for the assembly site
• The assembly surface must be level and horizontal.
• The instrument must not be exposed to flowing water or other fluids.
• The instrument must not be exposed to heat or direct sunlight.
• The instrument must not be able to fall from the workbench..
6.2 Setting up the device
NOTICE! NOTICE!
Damage to optical measuring instruments!
Grinding dust and water spray may damage measuring
instruments.
• Do not set up the manual grinding wheel near optical
measuring instruments.

Set up the instrument (Fig. 9) on the intended assembly site.

6.3 Insert water collection container
Personnel: Specialized personnel
Slightly lift the instrument on the side nearest to the operator (Fig. 10/1) to slide
the water collection container (Fig. 10/2) beneath it.

Before inserting the water collection container attach the
plug or the overflow hose.
If the water collection container has an overflow hose at-
tached, the operator must place it so that it is free of kinks.
6.4 Attach water tank
Personnel: Specialized personnell
Place the water tank (Fig. 11/1) with the water valve (Fig. 11/4) above the
sponge (Fig. 11/3) on the attachment surface(Fig. 11/2).

6.5 Connect the unit to the power supply
NOTICE! NOTICE!
The instrument may be damaged by incorrect power supply!
Incorrect power supply can result in damage to the
instrument.
• Only connect the instrument to an earthed wall socket
that conforms to the technical data.
Personnel: Specialized personnel
1. Insert the power plug of the instrument into the earthed wall socket.
2. Insert the inlet connector into the inlet receptacle on the instrument.
3. Ensure that the power cord is positioned so that it is not a trip hazard.

7.2 Grinding lenses
7.2.1 Check water collection container
NOTICE! NOTICE!
Damage to property due to overflowing water!
Overflowing water may damage instruments near the
manual grinding wheel and cause damage to property.
• Check the water collection container regularly.
• For equipment with an overflow hose, the operator
must check the attached hose.
Personnel: n Specialized personnel
1. Slightly lift the instrument (Fig. 12/1) with one hand.
2. Pull the water collection container (Fig. 12/2) out from under the instrument
with the other hand and check it. Empty the container if necessary.
